本書的正文部分有二十四講，基本囊括所有的中國文化典籍，第一講上古神話，首先對神話進行概說，中國神話記載最早且最早見于戰國至出漢，著名的《盤古開天辟地》《盤古化生萬物》《夸父追日》等，選《女媧補天》作為例文翻譯，其中很多中國元素，翻譯的生動，女媧直譯為Nuwa，九州和四極須加以解釋，英文用the four corners of the sky and the world with its nine regions.第二講為先秦寓言，中國的寓言開始于先秦，但是社會動蕩，列國爭雄，諸子百家，各抒己見，或借傳說故事譏他人之迂腐，寓言大興。寓言的翻譯要點，不外乎以生動流暢的英文來表達其深刻的寓意（moral），然而有些寓言其意明了，或以片言明示之，有的則隱含較深，本例《畫蛇添足》，本文涉及朝代的翻譯，楚有祀者譯為 a native of chu ,after worshiping his ancestors.第三講詩經風雅，中國的第一部詩歌總集《詩經》（Books of Songs）記錄了周代到春秋中葉歷時五百多年流傳于中原等地的詩歌305首，這里選錄的為關雎和君子于役分別屬于周南和王風。前者通過自然界鳥類的求偶來表達人類對美好愛情和幸福婚姻的向往與贊美，后來演繹為對于后姬之德的歌頌；后者則寫農夫之妻在丈夫被迫久久不歸，時時借助家禽的歸來表達盼郎歸的情感，關雎譯成ospreys.第四講楚辭悲歌，楚辭的主要作者是戰國時代楚國沒落貴族出身的大詩人屈原。楚辭作為一種新的詩體，屈原并不是唯一的作者，這里選錄了楚辭離騷，并直譯LiSao何方圓之能周兮的疑問句改為直陳語氣，方圓暗示君子小人不能顯示，只取其意，A circle fits not with a square design.屈心譯為I check my heart.第五講 道德之宗，中國文化之大宗，由先秦諸子所創立儒 墨 道 法 名 農 雜 陰陽 縱橫九大流派，經長期的外界內和而歸之于儒釋道三家，而道家在其中起到了哲學奠基和一以貫之的作用，老子《道德經》（the way and its power）把其道字譯成 tao。寂兮繆兮譯 為without sound ,without substance.可以為天下母One may think of it as the mother of all beneath Heaven.第六講莊周論道，莊子繼承并發揮了老子道的思想《逍遙游》的英譯sources of Chinese Tradition ,compiled by W.Theodore de Bary , Wing—TSIT ,Burton Watson ,其譯文準確傳神，生動且有氣勢，借用西方神話典故形象，出神入化，而傳達出中國道教的思想精髓，英語中運用when the bird rouses itself and flies and when it moves itself in the sea 兩個時間狀語。天池則譯為celestial Lake.第七講孔丘論語一共二十七篇，是孔丘弟子和后學關于孔丘言行的記錄，內容包括政治主張，教育主張，倫理觀念和品德修養等方面。論語的標題翻譯，有音譯和譯意兩種lunyu 和analects 至于Confucius的英譯，本于孔夫子而不是孔子有加已改正并派生若干個單詞，如Confucian, Confucianism.古文中的子對學人的尊稱The master.君子轉成形容詞 gentlemanly.第八講人性的概說中國哲學關于人性的思考始于先秦，其中有豐富的思考和討論，孔子首先提到性相見，習相遠的簡潔，在蒙學課《三字經》中增廣為人之初，性本善。本文選了《孟子。公孫丑上》中關于‘人又四端的論述，人有四端譯成four beginnings of human nature ,孟子有專門的譯法，Mencius.人皆有不忍人之心采用了直譯的方法，all men have a mind which cannot bear to see the surfings of others.見孺子后用about to fall into a well 譯將入于井。第九講名家論壇，名家是中國戰國時期一個頗具特色的學派，它以名實關系問題的考察和論辯主題，為邏輯學，語言哲學，哲學認識論和方法論乃至本體論提供了新的角度和思路，公孫龍上乘鄧析，師承墨子，與惠施同時代，為中國古典邏輯學和語言分析學奠定了基礎。荀子 不僅對先秦諸子多有批判繼承而獨成大儒，而且對正名問題作出了系統總結并有獨到的創造。名實論譯為 discourse on name and actuality.語其所產譯作together with what they produce.以其所正正其所不正，前須加詞加意以去開首唐突之嫌。英譯前加主語，anything subject to rectification of location 后用條件句 when it is not properly located.第十講兵家謀略，兵書是春秋末年齊國人孫武所著十三篇孫子兵法（sunzi: the art of the war）其產生比西方國家經典克勞塞維茲的戰爭論（on war）要早兩千多年，國之大事譯意為與國家生死攸關的重大問題，英文中的vital已經有生死攸關之意，以索其情轉譯為 to assess the outcome of war 和經之以五事譯為 in terms of the following five fundamental factors.道;the way 加詞I mean moral influence ,意指道德影響力，天加詞the effects of 以連文意，陰陽（day and night）地 earth 分為distance ,the terrain ,the land ,the place 再仔細說明頗有次序，獨具匠心。法：rules and regulations 并不準確，即刻轉為principles,靠近原意，曰則譯成find out.兵者，詭道也。譯為，war is a game of deception.攻其不備，出其不意。頗有警句風格，attack where he is least prepared.take action when he least expects you.廟算：一詞乃是典故，又是全篇的歸結語詞，he who makes full assessment of the situation at the prepare council meeting in the temple.第十一講，史學絕唱，中國第一部不朽的紀傳體通史是司馬遷的史記，歷史在以文史哲為宗的中國文化思想有突出地位。最早的中國史書《尚書》，（book of history），《左傳》是我國第一部記事較詳細的編年史書。史記的龐大在客觀上增加了對翻譯的難度，列傳：records of the historian.吾嘗三仕三見逐于君譯為 I was three times in office and three times thrown out of it by my sovereign.召忽死之：shao hu committed suicide.其為政也；in the matter of government.第十二講 文學傳記 從歷史的真是性來看，似乎文學傳記的產生邏輯和歷史地位應在任務傳記之后，單說傳記，乃是一個民族的的自我意識的覺醒。東晉詩人陶淵明，自然受到竹林七賢嘯傲山林的處世方式與越名教而任自然的超然思想，以五柳先生傳為例，五柳先生采用直譯，the man of five-willows.先生不知何許人也，the gentleman’s place of birth is not known nor his name or surname.閑靜少言，不慕榮利：he is a quiet man ,being of little speech ,he pursues no glory ,nor material gains.家徒四壁his house is bare around.第十三講文心文論，先秦諸子百家爭鳴，兩漢時期文章勃發。此后的魏晉多事之秋，不僅是詩人的時代還是玄學的時代，而且作為兩者的結合，也是文論的大興時代，曹丕，陸機等一代才子，發奮成文，各成一家，不僅為文必秦漢做了理論說明，為盛唐的文以載道開了先河，而且繼承先秦諸子的哲學論文以后，開啟了文藝學論文的時代高峰。嚴格的字面翻譯以外，拆字法和和拼字法也是常用的翻譯方法，如身體，this body，良史 譯為 good historian 榮樂 glory and pleasure。在涉及中國文化專門的詞匯時，特別是人名地名和書名的時候，譯者不僅在注釋中有專門的補充說明，而且利用文本有限的空間，進行合理的增加和加注.盛唐詩歌，唐代是中國封建社會的鼎盛時期。國家統一，經濟繁榮，三教并用，文化昌盛，為唐代詩歌的昌盛創造了有利的條件，他們從詩經，楚辭，樂府，古詩，民歌中吸取營養，李唐三百年，留詩五萬首。盛唐詩仙李白，詩圣杜甫成就最高，詩的翻譯不徒譯意，還要譯味，好的詩譯，應是形象與音韻俱佳，譯詩的忌諱就是呆譯，硬湊韻腳，李白的月下獨酌，譯為Last words ,意在標新立意，而多一般為直譯;Drinking alone in the moonlight.首句譯詩花間和一壺酒：an arbor of flowers and a kettle of wine.我歌月徘徊，我舞影零亂。See the moon---how she glances to my song ,see my shadow –it dances so lightly alone.第十五講詩品詩歌，中國是一個詩文大國，有習慣吧人品和文心視為一體，形成獨特的詩文風貌，本文選錄詩大序，這里面要注意到的是志 being intent ,心 mind，言 language 情 affection 形 form，文 pattern 正 correct 得 achievement。第十六講 唐宋散文 散文詩一個廣闊的領域,是一種無可定界的文體。最早的散文是以作者個人為單位會為一集，并且因為沒有名稱而是用了作者的姓名，是有宴會是文人騷客游樂抒志之記錄，其序文常邀請當事名家，幾乎成一獨立的載體，本文選錄了春夜宴桃李園，首句中的inn以中文的逆旅，頗有古典風味，浮生若夢，為歡幾何？浮生則譯成the floating life 與中文在字面上相合。第十七講，書譜書論，書法史中華藝術園地的一朵奇葩，書法理論如同創作一樣。到了唐代，不進書法創作本身取得了驕人的成績，還涌現出一大批杰出的書法家，例文之中給出了翻譯，zhuanshu looks complaisant and mild.li comes in tight-fitted units.cao flows and goes on forever zhen is succinct and neat.第十八講 禪宗智慧 中國的傳統文化是封閉自足的發展過程中，遇到兩次外來文化的挑戰和接觸，一次是東漢以來佛教和平的傳入還有一次就是近世西方歐美民主科學精神隨著救亡圖存強行的傳入，佛教的傳入自翻譯開始，尤其是大乘般若學在譯經傳道中演為空中，禪分為南北宗，主張頓悟，與主張漸悟的北派禪宗相對立，大乘 Mahayana 法 dharmas 止 cessation 法門 method 真 genius 如 thusness 心性 the mind nature 一心 the single mind 生滅 production generation and destruction 相 appearance 因緣 causality 三世 three ages 等。善知識 good friends ,being outwardly separated from all forms , this is non-form.第十九講 兩宋詞章 中國封建文化的高峰唐朝之后北宋和南宋，國勢雖然衰落，但在文學上以詞為代表，在成就上逐漸達到了唐詩的高度并與齊名，這里選的是北宋文豪蘇軾的水調歌頭。作為豪放派的代表作，南宋女詩人李清照人婉約而超之，寫閨怨而出奇，今選其名作聲聲慢。我欲乘風歸去，riding the wind ,there I would fly 起舞弄清影，何似在人間？I rise and dance ,with my shadow play on high as on earth, would be as gay.第二十講 元曲雜劇 隋唐之后戰亂不斷，朝代更迭，少數民族政權相繼入主中原。元代的散曲和雜劇把中國傳統戲曲推向 嶄新的階段，或表現男女的愛情或表現熱愛大自然美景，或關心社會疾苦和社會問題，就來源而論，曲分南北，有北曲和南曲之分這里選錄了竇娥冤。

其他四講也是涉及了古代的文化典籍，所涉及到的中國元素，都巧妙的繪聲繪色的翻譯過來，如三國演義 等，注釋是翻譯必不可少的手段。

本書的附錄為中國歷代文化典籍篇目，說卦傳 treatise of remarks on the trigrams 說文解字 Explanation of script and Elucidation of characters.這里匯集了所有的中國要籍，可以借鑒翻譯方法和翻譯手段。
