The offensive had already lasted three days, but we had not gained much ground Our troops engaging the enemy at the front were faced with strong resistance. The division commander instructed our battalion to take a gamble. We started under cover of darkness and pressed on in spite of great difficulties.By a stroke of luck, the temperature at night suddenly dropped to 20 degrees celsiusand the marsh froze over. Thanks to the cold weather, we arrived at our destination before dawn and began attacking the enemy from the rear. This turned the tide of the battle. The enemy ,caught off guard, soon surrendered.Unit three
Well begun is half done, as the saying goes.It is extremely important for a job applicant to do his homework while seeking employment. From my standpoint, whether or not one has done his homework clearly makes a difference in his chance of success.I have a friend who is earning somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 thousand dollars a year in a large computer software prepared. Those who make no endeavor to learn as much about his prospective employer as possible don’t have much of chance of success.Unit four
Professor Huntington’s paper greatly inspired me.According to him, in a pluralistic society, this will inevitably be different opinions. The key is to deal with them in such a way that they can play a constructive rather than destructive role.He argues that in a plural society we must stress importance to interpersonal relationships, cooperation, and looking at issues from the perspective of other people. If some groups regard themselves as superior and treat other ethnic groups or religions with disrespect, the whole society may be paralyzed.I am convinced that if we put into practice the ideas mentioned above, then there is the possibility of creating a new civilization.Unit seven
A severe earthquake occurred all of a sudden at 10 a.m.yesterday in a rural area, about 200 kilometers east of the city.Initial reports coming out of the region indicate the earthquake has caused widespread damage and heavy casualties. Many adolescents were among those injured or killed.Yet it remains obscure exactly how many people were hurt and killed as the entire area has been enveloped in rubble. However , one thing is certain: many face years of pain and suffering.Local people were clearly shaken by this reminder of their mortality. Some religious ones have gathered to pray that it will never recur.

A young man finds thatalong the streets without an obvious purpose can lead to trouble with the law.One misunderstanding leads to another until eventually he ends up in...
Awith the Law
I have only once been in trouble with the law.The whole process of being arrested andwas a rather unpleasant experience at the time, but it makes a good story now. What makes it rather disturbing was theboth of my arrest and myin court.
It happened in February about twelve years ago..I was still living at home at the time.
One morning I was in , a suburb of London near where I lived.I was looking for ajob so that I couldsome money to go travelling. As it was a fine day and I was in no hurry, I was , looking in shop windows, strolling in the park, and sometimes just stopping and looking around me..
It was about half past eleven when it happened.I was just walking out of the local library, having unsuccessfully soughtthere, when I saw a man walking across the road with the obvious intention of talking to me.I thought he was going to ask me the time.Instead, he said he was aand he was arresting me.At first I thought it was some kind of joke. But then another policeman appeared, this time in , and I was left in no doubt.
“But what for?” I asked.“為什么要抓我?”
“ with intent to commit an,” he said.“到處游蕩,企圖作案,”他說。
“What offence?” I asked.“作什么案?”
“Theft,” he said.“偷竊,”他說。
“Theft of what?” I asked.“偷什么?”
“Milk bottles,” he said, and with a perfectlytoo!
“Oh,” I said.“噢,”我說。.
Then I made my big mistake. At the time I was nineteen, had long untidy hair, and regarded myself as part of the sixties' “".As a result, I
wanted to appear cool andwith the incident, so I said, ”How long have
you been following me?“ in the mostandtone I could manage.I
thus appeared to them to be quite familiar with this sort of situation, and it
them in theirthat I was acharacter.
A few minutes later a police car arrived.
”Get in the back,“ they said.”Put your hands on the back of the front seat and
don't move them.“
They got in on either side of me.It wasn't funny any more.
At the police station they questioned me for several hours.I continued to try to
lookandwith the situation. When they asked me what I had been
doing, I told them I'd been looking for a job.”,“ I could see them thinking,”.“
Eventually, I was officially charged and told to report to Richmond '
Court the following Monday. Then they let me go.
I wanted tomy own defence in court, but as soon as my father found out
what had happened, he hired a very good.We went along that Monday armed
with all kinds of , including my English teacher from school as a character
witness. But he was neverto give evidence. My ”“ didn't get that far.The magistratethe case after fifteen minutes.I was free. The poor police
had never.
And so I do not have a criminal record. But what was most shocking at the
time was the things my release from the charge so clearly depended on.I had the
”right“ ,parents in court, reliable witnesses, and
I could obviously afford a very good solicitor..While asking for costs to be awarded, my solicitor's case quite obviouslythe fact that I had a ” academic record“.
Meanwhile, just outside the , one of the policemen who had arrested
me wascomplaining to my mother that another youngster had beenthe police.”You could have been a bit more helpful when we arrested you,“ he
said to me.
What did he mean?that I should have lookedand said
something like, ”Look here, do you know who you're talking to? I am a highly
successful student with a brilliant academic record. How dare you arrest me!" Then
they, presumably, would have apologized, perhaps even taken off their caps, and let
me on my way.
