在多數(shù)英語國家，人們在生日聚會上唱祝你生日快樂歌，祝福過生日的人。一般是在生日Party上有人捧出點燃生日蠟燭的生日蛋糕時大家齊聲歌唱（一般要關燈，保持房間黑暗）。生日蛋糕一般是一種裝飾的非常漂亮的蛋糕，而且在端上來的時候上面要插上與壽星年齡一樣多的蠟燭。壽星要默默的許個愿望，然后吹滅蠟燭。如果是一口氣就吹滅了所有的蠟燭，那么愿望就可能實現(xiàn)。有種迷信說法認為如果把愿望說出來就不靈了。壽星一般要切蛋糕的第一刀，除非是太小父母才可以代勞。

如果生日聚會在一家餐館舉行，那么也會唱生日歌。餐廳的服務生可能還會領唱接著就會送上餐后甜點(可能是也可能不是蛋糕，可能免費也可能不免費)。這個餐后甜點可能用一些發(fā)光的東西代替蠟燭。餐廳的其他顧客一般會加入進來一起祝福，唱歌。在一些餐廳還會有特別的非傳統(tǒng)生日歌去和舞蹈表演。
