Economic Growth Ahead and Home Education Behind
Resulted in More Chinese Students Choose Studying Overseas
Class 6Candy
Since 2008 China surpassed India with most students studying abroad, “oversea study”has become a significant topic, known by young Chinese students heading Australia, U.K.U.S.A.Canada, Singapore and more to pursuit “better” education. The first Chinese student to go overseas was businessman Yung Wing back in 1847 who studied in Yale University and believed that it was important to understand western science and technical knowledge to strengthen his country.Later a group of naval students were sent to Europe by Chinese government to learn shipbuilding, and after Meiji Restoration another group to Japan, because governors hoped that knowledge those students brought back would help modernize China. In early 20th century there was a constant stream of young Chinese heading overseas and the most famous one was Sun Yat-sen, first president and founding father of the Republic of China. After the Cultural Revolution which discontinued oversea study programs, in a speech in 1978, Deng Xiaoping encouraged Chinese students to learn abroad, and since then oversea study programs expanded dramatically. In 2011 three hundred and forty thousand Chinese went overseas to study and number is expected to continue rising this year(“Chinese students become more interested in studying abroad”).Current study-overseas fever generated from China’s booming economic growth, convenience and attraction of
oversea study, and from the unsatisfying quality of home education.Originally just children of political elites could study overseas, but now with thriving economy and rising global statue followed, China makes it easier for its ordinary families to send their children abroad.Economy of China is the world’s second largest by nominal GDP and by purchasing power parity after the United States. It is also the world's fastest-growing major economy, with 10% average growth rate over the past 30 years therefore Chinese households live better-off than ever before.According to a recent report released by Mycos on oversea study programs in China, an education data research firm, nearly 90 percent of 2009 Chinese graduates who studied overseas are financially dependent on their parents or relatives(“Number of overseas Chinese students increases”).In aspect of region, richer districts send more students overseas, and nearly 2 percent of graduates from the Yangtze River Delta region went overseas to study, which is the highest proportion in China.Economic growth not only enables Chinese students and their families to pay for oversea study tuition, but also broaden their view to choose oversea study. With more frequent communication around the world on economy, polity, science, technology, art and literature, a global village is also forming with help of convenient traffic transportation and worldwide Internet. This international village makes Chinese government more aware of that China needs to be part of the world by joining international education programme(Roberta and Alma, 179).As one of the oldest and most wide-ranging organizations, the United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO)has been actively influencing education policy making in Asia, particularly in China. In 1980, China began to work with the United Nations Development Program in education which provided China with much needed technology and financial assistance in schools and universities.Graduates from these international universities and colleges are highly appreciated and much favored by employers both in China and world because it is known that international colleges provide better and more satisfying education quality. Therefore for some students, they plan to gain impressive degrees that will advantage them in Chinese job market, and there are some hoping to stay long enough to gain citizenship.More convenience and advantages of oversea study attract more Chinese student to leave their home education. The quality of China’s education system, or its shortcomings to be specific, is also a factor that increase the quantity of students heading overseas.Although China develops prosperously in economy, its education system does not follow well, and many Chinese people complain that China’sstrict rote learning system neglects the importance of creativity, innovation and critical thinking, therefore hinders China’s development as a leader of inventions and breakthroughs. The dreaded Gaokao examination which is China’s university entrance examination that all Chinese high school students must take if they want to get into a university in China force teenagers to do little else but study, pressure and competition is so intense that students will chain themselves to
their desks, or sleep for only six hours a night. What’s more, since the huge expansion of Chinese higher education enrollment started in 1999, concerns over and criticism of deteriorating quality in teaching and learning of Chinese schools and colleges have risen. This process was also fueled by the famous question raised by influential scientist Qian Xuesen: why have Chinese universities failed to engender innovative minds? Another phenomenon is that the age of Chinese students who choose to study abroad is becoming younger and now a rising proportion of them choose oversea programs in high schools. While oversea study attracts Chinese students, their dissatisfying home education drive them away.China has a long history of oversea study dated back from mid 19 century, and the current number of students studying overseas increases so rapidly to become a fever worth focusing. For one reason, China has a booming and thriving growth in economy which enables and encourages students and their families to choose oversea study programs.A forming global village also makes it more convenient and competitive for Chinese students to get an international diploma which does good to their future career and life. However above all, dissatisfying home education quality is the underlying reason why more Chinese students heading overseas to receive higher education. In a word, explaining the reason why more Chinese students study abroad, economic growth and global village do the pull, while home education system does the push.Works Cited

A:Hello everyone Welcome to today’s English salon.I’m---.B:I’m---.hospitality's B: ok, I just want to know about it.A: that’s great! Now, let me ask you some question? If An American friend has invited you to visit his family. You've never been to an American's home before, and you're not sure what to do.Should you take a gift? How should you dress? What time should you arrive? What should you do when you get there? B: Actually, I know it.When you're the guest, you should just make yourself at home. A: yeah, you are knowledgeable! That's what hospitality is all about: making people feel at home when they're not. B: I am flatted, and I know that The question of whether or not to bring a gift often makes guests squirm.Giving your host a gift is not just a social nicety in some cultures-it's expected. But in American culture, a guest is not obligated to bring a present.Of course, some people do bring a small token of appreciation to their host.Appropriate gifts for general occasions might be flowers, candy or-if the family has small children-toys.If you choose not to bring a gift, don't worry. No one will even notice. A :yes ,it is necessary to take a gift , and the other thing is the food, American hospitality begins at home-especially when it involves food. Most Americans agree that good home cooking beats restaurant food any day. When invited for a meal, you might ask, “Can I bring anything?” Unless it's a potluck, where everyone brings a dish, the host will probably respond, “No, just yourself.” For most informal dinners, you should wear comfortable, casual clothes.Plan to arrive on time, or else call to inform your hosts of the delay.During the dinner conversation, it's customary to compliment the hostess on the wonderful meal.Of course, the biggest compliment is to eat lots of food! 當然,最大的贊美是多吃!A: XXX today, we are going to introduce the way of the American B :this is a basic etiquette, When you've had plenty, you might offer to clear the table or wash the dishes. But since you're the guest, your hosts may not let you.Instead, they may invite everyone to move to the living room for dessert with tea or coffee. After an hour or so of general chit-chat, it's probably time to head for the door. You don't want to wear out your welcome. And above all, don't go snooping around the house. It's more polite to wait for the host to offer you a guided tour. But except for housewarmings, guests often don't get past the living room. A:andAmericans usually like to have advance notice when people come to see them.Only very close friends drop by unannounced. This is especially true if the guests want to stay for a few days. Here's a good rule of thumb for house guests: Short stays are best.As one 19th century French writer put it, “The first day a man is a guest, the second a burden, the third a pest.” Even relatives don't usually stay for several weeks at a time. While you're staying with an American family, try to keep your living area neat and tidy.Your host family will appreciate your consideration. And they may even invite you back! B:everyonecould want to be the men that be invited the next time,Most Americans consider themselves hospitable people.Folks in the southern United States, in particular, take pride in entertaining guests. In fact, “southern hospitality” has become legendary. But in all parts of America, people welcome their guests with open arms.So don't be surprised to find the welcome mat out for you.Just don't forget to wipe your feet. A:Come to the point that cleanliness and hygiene Grooming and personal hygiene have been around for ages.No matter where they started, grooming and personal hygiene have become an important part of everyone's daily routine. B:yeah, You might think that all modern societies would have the same grooming and personal hygiene practices.while most modern people agree that these things are important, people in different cultures take care of themselves in different ways. A : By the way I remind of a joke! There used to be an old joke in America that people should take a bath once a week, whether they need one or not.In fact, though, Americans generally take a bath-or more commonly, a shower-every day.But in contrast to some cultures, most Americans get their shower in the morning, so they can start the day fresh. And instead of going to a beauty parlor for a shampoo, many Americans prefer to wash and style their own hair.So if Americans have a “bad hair day,” they have no one to blame but themselves. But most people in America do head for the beauty parlor or barber shop occasionally for a haircut, a perm or just some friendly conversation. B: in addition to this,Americans are known for having very sensitive noses. In America, “B.O.”(body odor)is socially unacceptable. For that reason, Americans consider the use of deodorant or anti-perspirant a must.Ladies often add a touch of perfume for an extra fresh scent.Men may splash on after-shave lotion or manly-smelling cologne.Another cultural no-no in America is bad breath.Americans don't like to smell what other people ate for lunch-especially onions or garlic.Their solution? Mouthwash, breath mints and even brushing their teeth after meals. A:From these appears we can come to a conclusion that Americans put great value on both grooming and personal hygiene. For some people, taking care of themselves has become almost a religion. As the old saying goes, “Cleanliness is next to godliness.” Whether or not being clean and well-groomed brings one closer to God, it certainly brings one closer to others.Americans look down on people who don't take care of themselves, or who “let themselves go.” B : To Americans, even if we don't have much to work with, we have to make the best of what we've got.My friends , if you haveAmerican friends , should take more attention to it. A:today,we know more about entertain guests, grooming and personal hygiene of American culture.and let us hope Next program, good-bye B : see you Good afternoon ,faculty students parents and friends.I am truly honored and grateful to speak at the commencement for the University of Maryland, Class of 2017.People often ask me: Why did you come to the University of Maryland? I always answer: Fresh air.Five years ago, as I step off the plane from China, and left the terminal at Dallas Airport.I was ready to put on one of my five face masks, but when I took my first breath of American air.I put my mask away. The air was so sweet and fresh, and oddly luxurious.(顯得格外的奢侈)I was surprised by this.I grew up in a city in China, where I had to wear a face mask every time I went outside, otherwise, I might get sick. However, the moment I inhaled and exhaled outside the airport, I felt free.No more fog on my glasses, no more difficult breathing, no more suppression.Every breath was a delight. As I stand here today, I cannot help, but recall that feeling of freedom. At the University of Maryland, I assume feel another kind of fresh air for which I will be forever grateful — the fresh air of free speech. Before I came to United States, I learned in history class about the Declaration of Independence, but these words had no meaning to me— Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of happiness.I was merely memorizing the words to get good grades. These words sounded so strange, so abstract and so foreign to me, until I came to University of Maryland.I have leaned the right to freely express oneself is sacred in American. Each day in Maryland, I was encouraged to express my opinions on controversial issues.I could challenge a statement made by my instructor.I could even rate my professors online. But nothing prepared me for the culture shock I experienced when I watched a university production of the play— Twilight: Los Angeles.《暮光:洛杉磯》 Twilight is a play by Anna Deavere Smith about the 1992 Los Angeles Riots. The riots followed acquittal of four Los Angeles police officers in the videotaped arrest and beating of Rodney King. For six days, the city was in chaos as citizens took to the streets. In Twilight, the student actors were openly talking about racism, sexism and politics.I was shocked, I never saw such topic could be discussed openly. The play was my first taste of political storytelling, one that makes the audience think critically. I have always had a burning desire to tell these kinds of stories, but I was convinced that only authorities on the narrative, only authorities could define the truth. However, the opportunity to immerse myself in the diverse community at the University of Maryland exposed me to various, many different perspectives on truth.I soon realized that here I have the opportunity to speak freely. My voice matters.Your voice matters. Our voices matter.Civil engagement is not a task just for politicians.I have witnessed this when I saw my fellow students marching in Washington DC, voting in the presidential election and raising money for support various causes. I have seen that everyone has a right to participate and advocate for change. I used to believe that one individual’s participation could not make a difference, but here we are, United Terps. Together, we can push our society to be more just open and peaceful.Class of 2017, we are graduating from a university that embraces a liberal arts education that nurtures us to think critically, and also to care and feel for humanity.2017屆的同學們,我們正從一個通過人文教育鼓勵我們批判性思考又不忘感受人性的大學畢業。 We are equipped with the knowledge of various disciplines and we are ready to face to the challenges of our society. Some of us may go to graduate school, some us may step into professions and some of us may begin a journey of exploration. But no matter what we do, remember, democracy and free speech should not be taken for granted.Democracy and freedom are the fresh air that is worth fighting for.Freedom is oxygen.Freedom is passion.Freedom is love. And as a French philosopher Jean Paul Sartre once said: freedom is a choice, our future is dependent on the choices we make today and tomorrow. We are all playwrights of the next chapters of our lives.Together, we right the human history. My friends, enjoy the fresh air and never let it go.Thank you.
