我們都知道，Essay在申請材料中的獨特性和重要性是不可忽視的。美國一所頂尖大學表示：“雖然申請人在大學的學習成績和標準化考試成績可以有力地幫助我們對他做出評估，但是有些無法用數據衡量的東西也是同樣重要的，甚至是更加重要的。”

Essay的寫作總原則是要圍繞著自己的特點來對過去的成就、經歷、挫折、技能、思想等進行總結以及對未來的規劃。一般來講，要寫出一篇優秀的文章要做到以下幾點：

表述要精確。任何時候都要盡可能詳盡而又具體的去表達你的想法。細節能讓你的作品更具真實性。對于要表述的內容，要表達的思想都要精確的表達出來，感染到讀者，讓讀者信服，從而體現文章的真實性。

言簡意賅，避免啰嗦。每一個句子都應該精簡到只保留它的基本部分。任何冗余或者不能增加新意的詞語都應該刪除。當你把文章精簡并刪掉不必要的詞和短語時，文章的質量就得到了提高。要知道，招生委員會在審核期間，要短時間內面對那么多Essay，他是沒有時間來看啰嗦，沒有主次的文章的。

保持同一風格和語調。在開始動筆之前，你就要決定好采用怎樣的風格和語調，并在整篇短文中保持一致。如果你在短文開頭部分的語調是輕松和幽默的，就不要突然在短文中間轉變為憂郁或者嚴厲的語調。如果你打算把自己的短文寫成是個人日記風格的，就不要突然開始向局外的讀者吹噓自己。
