UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s message for World Oceans Day 8 June, 2010
Oceans play a key role in our daily lives. They are integral to sustainable development and an important frontier for research. As scientists explore the oceans at greater depths than ever before, they continue to discover new forms of marine life. This research has great potential to advance human well-being.
But, if we are to fully benefit from what oceans have to offer, we must address the damaging impacts of human activities. The diversity of life in the oceans is under ever-increasing strain.Over-exploitation of marine living resources, climate change, and pollution from hazardous materials and activities all pose a grave threat to the marine environment. So does the growth of criminal activities, including piracy, which have serious implications for the security of navigation and the safety of seafarers.
Much action is already being taken within the framework of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea — our “constitution for the oceans”.More than 15 years after the Convention’s entry into force, it continues to act as our guide. But if we are to safeguard the capacity of the oceans to service society’s many and varied needs, we need to do much more.On this second annual commemoration of World Oceans Day, I urge Governments and citizens everywhere to acknowledge the enormous value of the world’s oceans — and do their part in ensuring their health and vitality.
World Oceans Day is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of oceans to humankind's sustainable development. It is also a time to recognize the many severe challenges related to oceans. These range from depleted fishery resources, the impacts of climate change and the deterioration of the marine environment to maritime safety and security, labour conditions for seafarers and the increasingly important issue of migration by sea.
Some of these concerns have arisen since the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.The progressive development of the law of the sea through the Convention and related instruments is meant to contribute to the sustainable development of the oceans and seas as well as to the strengthening of international peace and security, the equitable and efficient utilization of ocean resources, the protection and preservation of the marine environment and the realization of a just and equitable economic order. As such, the law of the sea provides a flexible and evolving framework for adapting to new challenges.
The ecosystem functions that oceans provide, and their importance to the global economy, deserve particular attention as we look ahead to next year's Rio +20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development. For that reason, the theme of this year's observance is “Our oceans: greening our future”.
All activities and policies related to oceans and the marine environment need to acknowledge and incorporate the three pillars of sustainable development: environmental, social and economic.Only then can we achieve the development objectives set by the international community. On this year's World Oceans Day, I urge governments and all sectors of society to embrace our individual and collective responsibility to protect the marine environment and manage its resources in a sustainable manner for present and future generations.

Water is the source of life and the link that binds all living beings on this planet. It is connected directly to all our United Nations goals: improved maternal and child health and life expectancy, women's empowerment, food security, sustainable development and climate change adaptation and mitigation.Recognition of these links led to the declaration of 2005-2015 as the International Decade for Action “Water for Life”.
1.Link
Linke
2.Living beings
4.Goal
5.Maternal:
6.Empowerment
7.Mitigation 減緩
Adaption mitigation
8.The declaration of 抽象名詞變動詞
9.Recognition of these links led to the
Our indispensable water resources have proven themselves to be greatly resilient, but they are increasingly vulnerable and threatened. Our growing population's need for water for food, raw materials and energy is increasingly competing with nature's own demands for water to sustain already imperiled ecosystems and the services on which we depend.Day after day, we pour millions of tons of untreated sewage and industrial and agricultural wastes into the world's water systems.Clean water has become scarce and will become even scarcer with the onset of climate change. And the poor continue to suffer first and most from pollution, water shortages and the lack of adequate sanitation.
1.Resilient
3.Have proven themselves to be greatly resilient
4.need for water for ??
5.A compete B A
6.and the services on which we depend 這里省略了water?
7.Onset 1.
8.First and most 首當其沖
9.Suffer
The theme of this year's World Water Day, “Clean Water for a Healthy World”, emphasizes that both the quality and the quantity of water resources are at risk.More people die from unsafe water than from all forms of violence, including war. These deaths are an affront to our common humanity, and undermine the efforts of many countries to achieve their development potential.
1.Clean Water for a Healthy World:保障清潔水源,創造健康世界(我永遠想不出來這么翻譯)
2.at risk
3.die from死于 柯林斯顯示后跟of和from是一樣的。
Die:
When someone dies as a result of a disease or injury, you can say that they die of the disease or injury or die from it.An old woman dying of cancer was taken into hospital. His first wife died from cancer in 1971.He died of a heart attack....a man who died from a suspected heart attack. Many of the injured sailors died of their wounds.Simon Martin died from brain injuries caused by blows to the head. You do not use any preposition except `of' or `from' after die in sentences like these.See also entry at dead.(c)HarperCollins Publishers.4.affrontn冒犯,侮辱affront to
5.humanity 人性
The world has the know-how to solve these challenges and become better stewards of our water resources.Water is central to all our development goals. As we mark the mid-point of the International Decade for Action, and look forward to this year's MDG Summit, let us protect and sustainably manage our waters for the poor, the vulnerable and for all life on Earth.
