This year, World Habitat Day falls during the month when demographers predict our planet’s seven billionth inhabitant will be born. The future that this child and its generation will inherit depends to a great degree on how we handle the competing pressures of growing population growth, urbanization and climate change.
Experts predict that by the year 2050, the global population will have increased by 50 per cent from what it was in 1999.Also by that time, scientists say, global greenhouse gas emissions must decrease by 50 per cent compared to levels at the turn of the millennium.I call this the “50-50-50 challenge”.
Rising sea levels are a major impact of climate change — and an urgent concern.Sixty million people now live within one metre of sea level.By the end of the century, that number will jump to 130 million.Major coastal cities — such as Cairo, New York, Karachi, Kolkata, Belem, New Orleans, Shanghai, Tokyo, Lagos, Miami and Amsterdam — could face serious threats from storm surges.
The nexus between urbanization and climate change is real and potentially deadly.
Cities are centres of industrialization and sources of emissions, but they are also home to solutions.More and more municipalities are harnessing wind, solar and geothermal energy, contributing to green growth and improving environmental protection.
Local efforts are critical to success, but they must be supported by international initiatives. We have already seen progress, including the creation of the Climate Change Adaptation Fund and adoption of the action plan to Reduce Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, known as “REDD plus”.All countries agree on the goal of limiting global temperature rise to below 2° C.Developed and developing countries have committed to lower greenhouse gasses in a formal, accountable international agreement.
Now we need to build on these advances. The United Nations Climate Change Conference in Durban this December must achieve decisive progress.Urbanization will be on the agenda at next year’s “Rio+20” United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development.
On this observance of World Habitat Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to the important journey to a more sustainable future, and let us focus greater attention on addressing climate change in the world’s cities and beyond.

今天,值此歡慶xiexiebang.com60周年之際,我們必須看到,今天的同當初xiexiebang.com創建之時相比,已經發生了巨大的變化。
他們還決定對xiexiebang.com秘書處進行重要的改革。

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s message for World Oceans Day 8 June, 2010
Oceans play a key role in our daily lives. They are integral to sustainable development and an important frontier for research. As scientists explore the oceans at greater depths than ever before, they continue to discover new forms of marine life. This research has great potential to advance human well-being.
But, if we are to fully benefit from what oceans have to offer, we must address the damaging impacts of human activities. The diversity of life in the oceans is under ever-increasing strain.Over-exploitation of marine living resources, climate change, and pollution from hazardous materials and activities all pose a grave threat to the marine environment. So does the growth of criminal activities, including piracy, which have serious implications for the security of navigation and the safety of seafarers.
Much action is already being taken within the framework of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea — our “constitution for the oceans”.More than 15 years after the Convention’s entry into force, it continues to act as our guide. But if we are to safeguard the capacity of the oceans to service society’s many and varied needs, we need to do much more.On this second annual commemoration of World Oceans Day, I urge Governments and citizens everywhere to acknowledge the enormous value of the world’s oceans — and do their part in ensuring their health and vitality.

UN Secretary-General’s Message on World Tourism DaySeptember, 2011
The theme of this year’s World Tourism Day, ―Tourism – linking cultures‖, highlights the powerful role of tourism in building international understanding and mutual respect.
There is no better way to learn about a new culture than to experience it first-hand.Tourism offers a wonderful connecting thread between visitor and host community. It promotes dialogue and interaction.Such contact between people of different backgrounds is the very foundation for tolerance. In a world struggling for peaceful coexistence, tourism can build bridges and contribute to peace.
Tourism’s contributions to development also advance the cause of global solidarity. At a time of profound global economic uncertainty, tourism’s ability to generate socio-economic opportunities and help reduce the gap between rich and poor, is more important than ever.
I encourage all involved in tourism to embrace the ten principles of the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism. These guidelines for sustainable and responsible tourism development, approved by the UN General Assembly in 2001, are based on the proven interaction between tourism and peace, human rights and understanding. World Tourism Day is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of tourism to global well-being.As we travel, let us engage with other cultures and celebrate human diversity. On this observance, let us recognize tourism as a force for a more tolerant, open and united world.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s Message for World Population Day 2011July, 2011
This year’s World Population Day falls during a milestone year, when we anticipate the birth of the earth’s seven billionth inhabitant. This is an opportunity to celebrate our common humanity and our diversity. It is also a
reminder of our shared responsibility to care for each other and our planet. Reaching a global population of seven billion is a numerical landmark, but our focus should always be on people. That is why I am pleased that the United Nations Population Fund is giving meaning to the number by
launching its campaign for “7 Billion Actions” to contribute to a better world.
More than ever, individuals can make a difference by uniting together through social networks and working for change. We have seen many examples this year of the immense power of people to embrace hope over despair,to seek fair treatment where they are suffering discrimination, and to demand justice over tyranny.
They are aspiring to attain universal rights that the United Nations proudly upholds and relentlessly works to
realize.
When we act on our shared values, we contribute to our common future.Ending poverty and inequality unleashes vast human potential.Promoting the Millennium Development Goals fosters prosperity and peace. And
protecting our planet safeguards the natural resources that sustain us all.
Later this year, a seven billionth baby will be born into our world of complexity and contradiction. We have enough food for everyone, yet nearly a billion go hungry. We have the means to eradicate many diseases, yet they continue to spread. We have the gift of a rich natural environment, yet it remains subjected to daily assault and exploitation. All people of conscience dream of peace, yet too much of the world is in conflict and steeped in
armaments.
Overcoming challenges of this magnitude will demand the best in each of us.Let us use this World Population Day to take determined actions to create a better future for our world’s seven billionth inhabitant and
for generations to come.
