However, I do not want to overstate my case. There is enormous creativity to be found in Chinese scientific, technological and artistic innovations past and present. And there is a danger of exaggerating creative breakthroughs in the West. When any innovation is examined closely, its reliance on previous achievements is all too apparent(the “standing on the shoulders of giants” phenomenon). SEAN: If that sort of thing happened only once in a while, it wouldn't be so bad.Overall, I wouldn't want to trade my dad for anyone else's.He loves us kids and Mom too.But I think that's sometimes the problem. He wants to do things for us, things he thinks are good. But he needs to give them more thought because: SEAN, HEIDI and DIANE:(In unison)Father knows better!(燈光迅速暗下,片刻之后又亮起。 可他應該多想想才對,因為: 肖恩、海蒂、黛安:(齊聲)老爸英明!10 I'd never realized how important daily routine is: dressing for work, sleeping normal hours.I'd never thought I relied so much on co-workers for company.I began to understand why long-term unemployment can be so damaging, why life without an externally supported daily plan can lead to higher rates of drug abuse, crime, suicide. 2 The stands were still filled with about 20,000 people, even though the final race had ended an hour earlier. The pole vault is truly the highlight of any track and field competition. It combines the grace of a gymnast with the strength of a body builder. It also has the element of flying, and the thought of flying as high as a two-story building is a mere fantasy to anyone watching such an event.
18 I like that idea.Consider that the same cultural soil producing the English language also nourished the great principles of freedom and rights of man in the modern world. The first shoots sprang up in England, and they grew stronger in America. The English-speaking peoples have defeated all efforts to build fences around their language.
When I was younger, there was an exceptionally interesting person I dated. What was most important to her, she told me, was “what's on the inside.” I thought I had found someone special to share my life with. Then I took her to see my apartment. At the time, I lived in a basement efficiency with a few pieces of dated furniture. The only new, comfortable chair was the one at my desk.Shortly after her visit, our relationship went straight south.
At the end of my junior year of high school, I heard about a summer program designed to interest girls in engineering. The six-week program was free, and students were given college credit and a dorm room at the University of Maryland.I applied to the program, not because I wanted to be an engineer, but because I was craving independence and wanted to get out of my parents' house for six weeks.I was accepted to the program and I earned six engineering credits. The next year I entered the university as an engineering major.Five years later I had a degree and three decent job offers.
On the farms the hens brooded, but no chicks were hatched. The farmers complained that they were unable to raise any pigs — the litters were small and the young survived only a few days. The apple trees were coming into bloom but no bees droned among the blossoms, so there was no pollination and there would be no fruit.
Unit 1 I don’t put much stock in the idea of luck.I think that usually things go well or not so well for people based on their actions.I believe that for the most part you create your own luck by working hard, practicing self-discipline, remaining persistent, and making personal growth a daily priority. 2 Most careers involve other people. You can have great academic intelligence and still lack social intelligence---the ability to be a good listener, to be sensitive toward others, to give and take criticism well 3 If your circumstances constantly get you down, then maybe it’s time for a change---not in your situation, but in your attitude. If you can learn to make the best of any situation, you can remove a formidable obstacle that stands between you and your dreams 4 Anybody can make an honest mistake when things are hectic. But people lacking focus have trouble not because they’re too busy, but because their priorities are out of whack. And that wastes their time and resources. 5 If you resist change, you’re really resisting success.Learn flexibility, or learn to like living with your failures. 6 The greater your talent, the more likely you are to lean heavily on it and skip the hard day-to-day work of improving it.If you possess this negative tendency, put yourself on a growth plan so that you can make the most of your God-given talent. Unit 2 Today, many institutions seem to be ignoring the liberal arts in favor of a curriculum that leans more and more toward vocational careers in some trade or occupation.
1.Teachers and professors too often are portrayed as idealists living in an ivory tower who are out of touch with real world. They are accused of emphasizing academic skills or studies that do not relate directly to helping a person move closer to a prospective job or career.
The problem is that most students now view higher education as a particular means to a particular end.
2.The justification for a university is that it preserves the connection between knowledge and the zest of life, by uniting the young and the old in the imaginative consideration of learning.
.The student ―has four years to discover himself a space between the intellectual wasteland he has left behind and the inevitable dreary professional training that awaits him after the baccalaureate.
3.We must make each student begin to see his or her place as a small, but vital, link in a continuous chain of humanity that began thousands of years ago and stretches on well into the future.
4.Life does not consist of taking courses in small segments.A productive life consists of finding huge tasks and mastering them with whatever tools of intelligence and energy we have.We are going to turn you loose on some huge tasks.Let's see what you can do with them.
5.Let us create environments where our students can grow and emerge as creative and thinking persons – individuals who know history, philosophy, religion, literature, etc. After all, these are the “liberalizing arts, the studies that liberate the mind and send it questing on strange and alluring adventures.
6.If we accept what Upham says, and we are committed to preparing our students for the real world beyond graduation, then there can be a promising future for the liberal arts in this growing age of technology. Unit 3 1.Indeed, globalization became the ―grand strategy‖ of the Clinton administration, which envisioned the U.S.elite being the primus inter pares--first among equals---of a global coalition leading the way to the new, benign world order.
2.―Trade liberalization has stalled, aid is less coherent than it should be, and the next financial conflagration will be managed by an injured fireman.‖ “貿易自由化陷入停頓,援助也未按計劃貫穿始終,撲救下次金融大火的將是一位自身負傷的消防員。”
3.There has been too much dissonance between the promise of globalization and free trade and the actual results of neoliberal policies, which have been more poverty, inequality, and stagnation.
4.These agreements are in many ways more dangerous than the multilateral negotiations at the WTO since they often require greater concessions in terms of market access and tighter enforcement of intellectual property rights. 5.Fifteen years since it was trumpeted as the wave of the future, globalization seems to have been a ―brave new phase‖ of the capitalist adventure than a desperate effort by global capital to escape the stagnation and disequilibria overtaking the global economy in the 1970s and 1980s.The collapse of the centralized socialist regimes in Central and Eastern Europe deflected people’s attention from this reality in the early 1990s.
6.The urgent task is not to steer corporate-driven globalization in a ―social democratic‖ direction but to manage its retreat so that it does not bring about the same chaos and runaway conflicts that marked its demise in that earlier era.
Unit 4 THE long-run value of all paper currencies is zero.So why should the dollar be any different? Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Iran's president decried the dollar as a ―worthless piece of paper‖.
1.We should be concerned, but if the administration, the Federal Reserve and the Congress act responsibly, the dollar should be near its bottom and begin to rise against most foreign currencies.
2.Many believe—and some evidently hope—that the greenback might be on its way out as an international currency.Worrying parallels are seen between the dollar's recent fall and the decline of sterling as a reserve currency half a century ago.
That currencies rise and fall and test records is hardly unusual. What lends the dollar's decline an air of crisis is that the world's bloated currency reserves are crammed with depreciating dollar assets.
What lends the dollar's decline an air of crisis is that the world's bloated currency reserves are crammed with depreciating dollar assets.
3.The dollar has weathered these storms. But now it faces a nasty squall that combines both
cyclical and structural blasts. Its decline in the past five years has imposed a huge capital loss on foreign-exchange reserves. If this becomes too painful, central banks may be tempted to cut their losses and dump their dollars, causing a slump in the currency's value. 4.Reserves are held to buttress confidence in a country's own currency, not as a float for global trading. As a backstop, reserves need to be easily convertible(so they can be used as an emergency source of liquidity)and a good store of value.
5.Despite the anxiety and gloom, some straws in the wind suggest that the dollar's decline may soon slow.In the past few weeks it has regained ground against a handful of important currencies, including the pound and the Australian dollar.
6.On the eve of the first world war, when Britain was the greatest trading power, the pound's share in official currency reserves was all but matched by the combined share of the French franc and German mark. After the war a three-way split was maintained, with the dollar replacing the mark. Unit 7 1.There is today, quite rightly, a growing concern for our environment and a genuine fear that, if we do not change our ways right now, the damage we will inflict on our planet will render it incapable of sustaining-for future generations-the economy we have grown accustomed to over the better part of the past two centuries.
2.That the earth and its resources do not belong to us and are not ours to squander without thought for the future is not proving an easy lesson for us to learn, but we are gradually succeeding---or, at least, waking up to the enormity of the task that confronts us.
3.The pressure is mounting for every potential polluter, every user of energy and every conspicuous contributor to climate change and global warming to clean up their act and adopt greener practices. The transport industry is no exception to such scrutiny and pressure;indeed, it seems to attract more than its fair share of attention in this regard-certainly enough to ensure that environmental concerns are now high on the agenda in all of its sectors.
4.IMO’s environmental work in recent years has covered a remarkably broad canvas, embracing everything, from the quality of our atmosphere to the microscopic aquatic life-forms that can be transported around the world in ships’ ballast water and deposited in alien local ecosystems where, by disrupting their delicate balance, they can cause immense damage.
5.IMO’s work in this respect must be part of a broad-based effort in which everyone has a responsibility and everyone has a role to play, a concept precisely reflected in the well-known environmental call to action ―think globally — act locally‖.And in the long term, society will need to address its own priorities and understand that nothing comes for nothing and that there will be prices and sacrifices that we must be prepared to pay and make, for the greater good of all.
6.And in the long term, society will need to address its own priorities and understand that nothing comes for nothing and that there will be prices and sacrifices that we must be prepared to pay and make, for the greater good of all.
Unit 8 1.When dusk had fallen, I should experience the double delight of being able to see by artificial light which the genius of man has created to extend the power of his sight when Nature decrees darkness.
2.Hear the music of voices, the song of a bird, the mighty strains of a orchestra, as if you would be stricken deaf tomorrow.Touch each object you want to touch as if tomorrow your tactile sense would fail.Smell the perfume of flowers, taste with relish each morsel, as if tomorrow you could never smell and taste again.
Such an attitude would emphasize sharply the values of life.We should live each day with a gentleness, a vigor, and a keenness of appreciation which are often lost when time stretches before us in the constant panorama of more days and months and years to come.
It is the same old story of not being grateful for what we have until we lose it, of not being conscious of health until we are ill.
3.The first day I devote to my friends, animate and inanimate. The second revealed to me the history of man and Nature.Today I shall spend in the workday world of the present, amid the haunts of men going about the business of life.
4.It is human, perhaps, to appreciate little that which we have and to long for that which we have not, but it is a great pity that in the world of light the gift of sight is used only as a mere conveniences rather than as a means of adding fullness to life.
5.Court records reveal every day how inaccurately eyewitnesses see.A given event will be seen in several different ways by as many witnesses. Some see more than others, but few see everything that is within the range of their vision. 6.Some sights are pleasant, filling the heart with happiness;but some are miserably pathetic. To these latter I do not shut my eyes, for they, too, are part of life.To close the eye on them is to close the heart and mind.
Unit 9 1.Acquaintances recount his uncanny ability to calculate columns of numbers off the top of his head — a feat Warren still amazes business colleagues with today.
2.Warren Buffett approached graduate studies with the same resistance he displayed a few years earlier.
3.One of his best known calls was the Northern Pipe Line, an oil transportation company managed by the Rockefellers.
4.Shortly thereafter, he waged a proxy war and secured a spot on the Board of Directors.
5.Absolutely determined, Buffett offered to work for the Graham partnership for free.Ben turned him down.He preferred to hold his spots for Jews who were not hired at Gentile firms at the time.Warren was crushed.
Small, to say the least, but he had much bigger plans for that pool of money.
6.A somewhat-celebrity in his hometown, Warren never gave stock tips despite constant requests from friends and strangers alike. Warren said he ”must have been in the bathroom when the dividend was declared“.
Unit 10 1.She has an extremely tough job, which she happens to do very well.My wife's the one who, on occasion, has to bring the NASA chief back to Earth. She kind of shook her head. She told me that MIT's past commencement speakers have been some of the world's most powerful people.
2.”You know NASA is famous for fitting a square peg into a round hole.Well, at MIT those outstanding technologists somehow managed to precariously balance an eight-foot anvil weighing 48 units on top of the Great Dome.“ I said, ”Don't worry, honey. These are MY people."
3.Contrary to what many of you are thinking, I'm not wearing this because I lost some cruel bet.And I'm not wearing it because I'm the victim of the latest MIT hack.At least not yet.
4.More than that, I hope that each and every one of you remembers Galileo. Not necessarily his lectures, but his lessons and his life. For as grand as all of Galileo’s discoveries and contributions were, I think his example —what motivated him to live his life the way he did—was really quite simple. He was committed to lifelong learning.
.Because if you meet that challenge — and I know MIT grads can, and I know MIT grads will — you will be responsible for perhaps the most dramatic revolution in the history of humankind. It is a revolution that will surpass the one that started when Galileo himself first came to cast his gaze skyward.I believe that with all my heart.
Are these goals lofty, the dreams big, the missions risky? You bet.And the chances are you will meet your share of detractors. And no doubt, you will encounter some failure along the way.But remember that Galileo was put under house arrest for his beliefs.People thought he was a heretic.Certainly if you take risks and come up short, it won't compare to that.Don't be afraid, get up, dust yourself off and move on.
5.The real mark of your character comes from not how you react to your successes, of which I know there will be many. How you react to your failures, of which there will be, if you are bold, a number in your lifetime.
6.That somehow I could play, albeit a small role in attempting to solve one of the mysteries of life, literally gave my father more life. That's the power of truth and learning and excellence. The search for what it is that ignites the human spirit, overcoming the unexpected and discovering the unknown--that's what life is about.
Always take time out to love and to live. You're going to be busy, but never forget family and friends.
With the confidence that you will never, ever have to recant your discoveries, remain committed to learning.Settle for nothing less than excellence.Do not only seek truth. But believe in yourself. That way, you will find truth.
Unit 11 Ohmy's success has already had wide ramifications in South Korea's media industry.Although it has not killed off any South Korean newspapers or broadcasters, it has forced all of them to adjust by becoming more like Ohmy.
After a year or so of looking in vain for a good business model, Mr Gillmor has put the idea on ice.
that Andy Warhol's proverbial ―15 minutes of fame‖ have now become ―15 megs‖(megabytes)of fame for everybody on earth. ―journalism needs to become a community service rather than a profit centre,‖ and is working on making this happen. As The State of the News Media puts it, ―the worry is not the wondrous addition of citizen media, but the decline of full-time, professional monitoring of powerful institutions.‖

1“Very hesitantly I selected a tube of blue paint , and with infinite precaution made a mark about as big as a bean on the snow-white field. At that moment I heard the sound of a motorcar in the drive and threw down my brush in a panic.I was even more alarmed when I saw who stepped from the car: the wife of Sir John Lavery , the celebrated painter who lived nearby.“?Painting!?she declared,?What fun.But what are you waiting for? Let me have the brush---the big one.? She plunged into the paints and before I knew it , she had swept several fierce stokes and slashes of blue on the absolutely terrified canvas.Anyone could see it could not hit back.I hesitated no more.I seized the largest brush and fell upon my wretched victim with wild fury.I have never felt any fear of a canvas since.”
Unit
2This belief in hard work is the first of three main factors contributing to Asian students? outstanding performance. It springs from Asians? common heritage of Confucianism, the philosophy of the 5 th-century-BC Chinese sage whose teachings have had a profound influence on Chinese societh. One of Confucius?s primary teachings is that through effort, people can perfect themselves.Confucianism provides another important ingredient in the Asians? success as well.In Confucian philosophy, the family plays a central role—an orientation that leads people to work for the honor of the family, not just for themselves. One can never repay one?s parents, and there?s a sense of obligation or even guilt that is as strong a force among Asians as Protestant philosophy is among those in the West.

3The first cultural translator I ever met was an installation engineer, George by name, who worked for an American company where I was the director of international operations. The company had just started a joint venture with a Japanese firm, and the American management needed someone to train the Japanese employees in its unique technology.George?s solid understanding of the equipment, its installation and use made him the best-qualified employee for the job, so everyone was happy when George accepted a two-year contract for temporary transfer to Japan. From the start, George was well accepted by all the Japanese employees.Japanese managers often distrust anyone sent to represent US owners, but George was so naturally nonassertive that no one could see him as a threat to their careers. So they felt comfortable asking his advice on a wide range of matters, including the odd behavior of their partners across the ocean.Engineers throughout the company appreciated George?s expertise and his friendly and capable help, and they got into the habit of turning to him whenever they had a problem—any problem. And the secretaries in the office were eager to help this nice bachelor learn Japanese.
Unit
4Failure is never pleasant. It hurts adults and children alike. But it can make a positive contribution to your life once you learn to use it.Step one is to ask, “Why did I fail?” Resist the natural impulse to blame someone else.Ask yourself what you did wrong, how you can improve. If someone else can help, don?t be shy about inquring.Success, which encourages repetition of old behavior, is not nearly as good as a teacher as failure. You can learn from a disastrous party how to give a good one, from an ill-chosen first house what to look for in a second.Even a failure that seems total can prompt fresh thinking, a change of direction.
Uint
5Balancing work and school was difficult.“I was staying up late studying, and going to work early every morning.I was having a hard time concentrating in class, and a hard time on the job because I was so tired,” she says. But she ended up with two A's in her first semester anyway.Priscilla decided to pursue an archaeology major, and in the summer of 1992, she got her first opportunity to really test out her interest in the subject. The archaeological field school of Washington State University was sponsoring a summer research project at a site alongside the Snake River in Washington.Priscilla threw herself into the work, and the project supervisors were impressed. At the end of the summer, one of the professors offered her a job.“He said,?We just got a contract for a project in North Dakota. We want to hire you if you're willing to take a semester off from school.'” The offer was a diversion from Priscilla's pursuit of her BA.“But by then I no longer doubted that I would ultimately finish school, so I felt comfortable grabbing this opportunity,” she says.

He has been proclaimed “the finest mind alive”, “the greatest genius of the late 20th century”, and “Einstein's heir”.Known to millions, far and wide, for his book A Brief History of Time, Stephen Hawking is a star scientist in more ways than one.His gift for revealing the mysteries of the universe in a style that non-scientists can enjoy made Hawking an instant celebrity and his book a bestseller in both Britain and America. It has earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records for spending 184 weeks in The Sunday Times “top-ten” lists, and has sold more than five million copies worldwide — virtually unheard-of success for a science book. How did all this happen? How has a man who is almost completely paralysed and unable to speak except through a computer overcome these incredible obstacles and achieved far more than most people ever dream of?

But thinking is far different from laziness.Thinking is one of the most productive activities a human being can undertake.Every beautiful and useful thing we have created exists because somebody took the time and effort to think of it.And thinking does require time and effort. It's a common misconception that if a person is “gifted” or “bright” or “talented,” wonderful ideas will flash spontaneously into his mind.Unfortunately, the intellect doesn't work this way.Even Einstein had to study and think for months before he could formulate his theory of relativity. Those of us who are less intelligent find it a struggle to conceive even a moderately good idea, let alone a brilliant one.
Uint8
When you're eating among other people, you don't raise your voice;it's just one example of the unwritten rules we live by.When you consider it, you recognize that those rules probably govern our lives on a more absolute basis than the ones you could find if you looked in the law books. The customs that govern us are what make a civilization. There would be chaos without them, and yet it's not at all clear why — even in our disintegrating society — we obey them. How many times have you stopped at a red light late at night? You can see in all directions;there's no one else around — no headlights, no police cruiser idling behind you. You're tired and in a hurry. But you wait for the light to change. Is it for safety's sake? No;you can see that there would be no accident if you drove on.Is it to avoid getting arrested? No;you are alone;there's no one to catch you.Still, you sit and wait.
