halliday認為，語篇是在一定的情景語境中產生的，所以語篇受制于情景語境，情景語境的三個變項是：話語范圍（field）、話語基調（tenor）和話語方式（mode）。thompson指出語言的情景語境變項與語言的三大純理功能密切相關。語言的三大純理功能是指概念功能、人際功能和語篇功能，它們分別受到話語范圍、話語基調和話語方式的支配。因此，人們可以從情景語境出發對語篇的語義特征和語言形式作出有據可循的預測。本文將選取布什911演說中一些具有代表性的語句進行語言的純理功能分析。

1.1 概念功能分析。halliday和hasan認為：“概念功能是指語言對人們在現實世界中的各種經歷的表達，它體現在語法中的及物性系統和名詞。”

及物性系統包括六個不同的過程：“物質過程、心理過程、關系過程、行為過程、言語過程和存在過程，以及與各種過程有關的參與者和環境成分”。在布什的這篇演說中，最明顯的是物質過程和關系過程，這與該語篇的特點有關，下面將對這兩個過程進行分析。
