在英語中,表示對某件事物的確定程度,即表示推測的時候,我們通常會用到以下情態動詞:must, might, could, may, can't, couldn't.一.can和could的區別和用法

1.can表示體力和腦力方面的能力,或根據客觀條件能做某種動作的“能力”。例如: Can you speak English? What can I do for you? can用在否定句和疑問句中時有時表示說話人的“猜測”或 “不肯定”。例如: Where can he be?

Can the news be true?(在日常會話中,can可代替may表示“允許”,may比較正式)

2.could 是 can的過去式,表示過去有過的能力和可能性,還有懷疑和不肯定的意思(在否定和疑問句中)。例如: She couldn't skate when she was five years old.(能力)At that time we thought the story could be true.(可能性)

二.跟上組詞一樣, might也是may的過去式,其用法如下: 1.may的用法:

a.表示“允許”或“請求”。例May I come in?

在使用這一用法時需注意: may表示“允許”的否定形式是must not,意思是“不應該”“不許可”。

例如:-May I take this book out of the reading-room?-No,you mustn't.不行。

b.表示說話人的猜測,認為某一事情“或許”或“可能”發生。例如: He may know the answer.Tomorrow I may go shopping.2.might的用法:

a.might可以代替may,表示現在時間的動作,但語氣較為婉轉客氣或更加不肯定。例如: He might not come today.Might I take a suggestion?

b.might用來表示現在時間時,還可表示“規勸”。例如: You might pay more attention to spoken English.三.must與have to的區別

have to比較強調客觀需要,must著重說明主觀看法。另外have to能用于更多時態,比較下面的句子:

有時兩者都可以用,意思差別不大。

must在表示說話人對事物的推測時候要注意它比may肯定得多,相當于漢語的“一定”或“準是”。(只有在肯定句中能這樣用。)

1)can(could)表示能力 , 這時could 為can 的過去時;能夠(可能), 這時could 不是can 的過去時, 它表示比can 的可能性更小或語氣更委婉。例如: She can sing an English song.(他能唱英文歌。)Can(Could)you come here at six ?(你能六點中來這兒嗎?)

2)may(might)可以(表示許可,might 表示更委婉);may 的否定式謂:can't(不該)或mustn't(不許)例如:----May I come into the room to see Mr Green ?

----No, you can't.(mustn't)He needs to have a good rest.----我可以進來看看格林先生嗎?

-----不,你不要進來。它需要很好地休息。

3)must 必須;否定式 mustn't ,意思為:一定不要 ;回答 must 提問時,否定用needn't , 如:

4)shall(should)應該(表示勸告,建議)一般用于第二或第三人稱。例如:

You should keep your promise.你應該遵守諾言。

She would make mistakes in spelling when others hurried her.有人催時她就會犯拼寫錯誤。

(二)情態動詞表示推測

對目前狀態的推斷以及 對目前正在發生的動作的推斷

1)肯定的推斷:may,should,must 2)否定的推斷:can't,couldn't 3)疑問的推斷:can(could)例句: It may be Mary.那可能是瑪麗.They should be at home by now , I think.我想他們現在該到家了。

There must be a mistake.一定有錯誤。

It can't be Mr Li.He has gone home.那不可能是李先生。他已經回家了。

Where could(can)he be now ? 他現在可能會在哪呢?

Can the news be true ? 消息會是真的嗎?

They must be playing basketball on the playground.他們一定正在操場打籃球。

He can't be writing his composition.他不可能在寫作文。

對某個狀態或 過去發生的事情進行推測

在情態動詞后加上 have done 例如:

1)肯定的推斷:may have done , must have done

2)否定的推斷:can't have done,couldn't have done

3)疑問的推斷:can(could)have done

例句: They may have settled the problem.(他們可能已經解決了這個問題。)

I might have come to a wrong conclusion.(我可能得出了一個錯誤的結論。)The road idn't wet , It can't have rained last night.(路面沒濕,昨天夜里肯定每下雨。)

(三)幾個應注意的問題

1)情態動詞+have done 可以表示對過去所發生事情的一種責備語氣。如:

You needn't have told them that.(你本不必告訴他們那件事。needn't have done表示本不必做而做了的事情。)

2)情態動詞dare 和 need 還可以用作實義動詞。在肯定句中多用于實義動詞,在疑問句和否定句中多用情態動詞,用于實義動詞時有人稱和數的變化。例如:

He needn't worry about us now.(他不必為我們擔心。need 為情態動詞)
