When I think of people in this world who have really made a difference, I think of my parents. They were truly saints among ordinary people.I was one of the ten children my parents adopted. They rescued each of us from a life of poverty and loneliness. They were hardly able to restrain themselves from bringing home more children to care for.If they had had the resources they certainly would have. Most people do not realize how much they appreciated someone until they pass away.My sisters and brothers and I did not want this to happen before we uttered the words “Thank you” to our parents.Although we have all grown up and scattered about the country, we got back together to thank our parents. My brother Tom undertook the task of organizing the event.Every Friday night, Mom and Dad have had the ham dinner special at the same restaurant for the last twenty years. That is where we waited without their knowing. When we first caught a glimpse of them coming across the street, we all hid underneath a big table. When they entered, we leapt out and shouted, “Thank you, Mom and Dad.” My brother Tom presented them with a card and we all hugged. My Dad pretended that he had known we were under the table all along.

Women who exercise regularly need to be careful with what they eat.Researchers have found evidence that even moderate exercise can result in lose iron. They said that women, who exercise regularly, especially in endurance activities, typically lose iron.In order to prevent this from becoming a problem, it is important that those women consume more meat or take supplements to replace the iron lost. Those who do not bother to get plentiful amounts of iron may begin to feel weak and tired.“If you can get the recommended daily allowance of iron in your diet, you will probably perform better,” said one diet specialist.“One shortcoming of taking iron pills is that the pill form is not well absorbed and can sometimes make you sick.It is preferable that you try to remedy the deficiency by getting more iron-rich meats in your diet.”
There are ways to help your body store away the iron it takes in.By getting plenty of
Vitamin C, your body is able to process, or use, the iron better.Researchers acknowledged that everyone’s body is different and the problem will be less serious for some.Because it is impossible to decide whether or not this could be a problem for you, health specialists say it is advisable to check your iron levels.Even when you can't feel it, you may still have a problem.

While many private schools are focusing more on values, public schools are moving toward testing standards. The national government demands academic success and tests are taken as a key measurement for a school’s performance.Schools with low test scores face penalties(處罰)such as a reduction in money to run their schools. And, even individual teachers are being graded on how they’re preparing their students for these tests.“We have concentrated too much on teaching the kids how to take these tests,” commented one elementary school teacher, “We should be providing a more comprehensive curriculum to these kids.We should be cultivating leadership and curiosity.Unfortunately, there is never time.”
One school principal remarked, “It’s true that it would be beneficial to our kids if they were getting better scores on the subjects being tested. The trouble is that in poorer areas of the city like ours, kids start school less equipped to perform well.We have many obstacles to overcome before we can teach them basic subjects. All schools are not alike, so they should’t be tested that way.”
“The goal is to improve performance in schools that are not providing their students with tools for success,” said one government official. He admits, however, that he is having a hard time convincing faculty and teachers this plan will work。

For many, beauty and fashion are permanently linked. With regard to fashion, the Barbie doll has been consistently in style. From the first Barbie dolls, Mattel took care to dress them in detailed, fashionable clothes. Some observers note that the fashions of the Barbie doll trace fashion trends perfectly since 1959.While critics complain that the models do not represent “average” female bodies, they also complain about the Barbie doll’s size. Some have criticized the dimensions of the Barbie doll as an unattainable ideal of the female shape.Charlotte Johnson, the Barbie doll’s first dress designer, explained that the doll was not intended to reflect a female figure realistically, but rather to portray an exaggerated shape underneath fashionable clothes. However, the unrealistic dimensions of the doll have brought the strongest criticism regarding the doll’s encouragement of an obsession with weight and looks.Convinced of the negative effects of the Barbie doll on children, Cathy Meredig of High Self Esteem Toys developed a more realistically proportioned doll in 1991.Her doll did not sell well, however.Throughout the years, the Barbie doll has had several competitors, but none have been able to compete with the glamor offered by the Barbie doll.

As a surgeon, I have seen a lot of deaths.I am rarely astonished by anything. The other day, however, one humorous and slightly odd story I heard touched me.A doctor told me that a very old woman he was treating was lying motionless on her pillow face down.He thought she was dead, but when he approached, he noticed she was breathing. Her hospital gown exposed her back bare, so he put a cover over her.Just then she sat up slowly, startling the doctor. She seemed quite
alive.“I thought you were nearly gone,” the doctor said.“Your breathing was so shallow and you seemed lifeless.”
“Never mind that, doctor, I’ve been waiting for you,” the old woman said quite confidently as if she were his mother. She had been a good mother to four, but she had survived them all.She gracefully handed the doctor a jar of strawberry jam.“Take the lid off and try some,” she said.He sampled a little and told her it was delicious.“Good,” she said, handing him a piece of paper with writing.“This is how to make it.” He understood what a(n)privilege she had given him and took it with thanks and then left. The old woman lay back down and died soon after his departure.

Do you know February 2nd is Groundhog's Day(土撥鼠日)? Legend has it that on this morning, if a groundhog can see its shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. If it cannot see its shadow, spring is on the way. Some believe that the means of forecast is rather arbitrary and is often incorrect.Others argue that it is significant because it recognizes that the different parts of nature are connected in some way. Each part is dependent on the rest of the parts for a healthy system. Some farmers pay close attention to the behavior of ducks and geese when predicting the weather. It is sensible to guess an early winter is coming when you see ducks and geese moving south in October. Many dog owners can tell when winter or spring will come by stroking their pet.In preparation for winter, a dog's hair becomes thicker.Dogs lose hair as spring sets in.Information gathered from nature can help people to take precautions against a hard winter or bad storm. Some animals are even believed to be able to detect when an earthquake will occur.People holding this belief even go further to say that information gathered by computers is often worthless and nature is far more accurate: Isn't it time we started paying attention to what is around us?

Bill Gates is known around the world for the founding of Microsoft. And, most people are quite aware that his evolution from computer hacker to the world's richest man was due in large part to his partner Paul Allen. But, while Gates' fame has mushroomed since the beginning of Microsoft, Allen has remained less famous. Many around the world have followed the life of Gates, but are ignorant of what has happened to Allen. In fact, as most in the Northwest can tell you, Allen has made quite a(n)impact on the region and the world. In 2000, he retired from Microsoft, but the company retains him as a permanent advisor to top executives. Not all of Allen's interests involve commercial success.Allen has given four hundred million dollars in charity to the University of Washington for science and technology research. He created the Experience Music Project in Seattle, employing famous architect Frank Gehry to design the building. This is not his only contribution to the arts.Allen is very involved with modernizing Hollywood's movie technology. His film studio is the most advanced in the world. He has also built a sports empire, buying both a basketball and a football team as well as helping to support a local stadium, and he owns a sports magazine.Oh, and let's not forget, Allen is the seventh richest man in the entire world. Not bad.

You have probably heard of Dolly. She is the world's first cloned sheep and quite famous. You
would never know that she was such a famous animal just by looking at her, though.”She's about as unremarkable-looking as any sheep there ever was,“ commented one scientist who tends to the famous sheep. Now that Dolly has successfully been cloned, there are many scientists observing her every movement.Their hope is that they never detect anything remarkable with Dolly. One of the scientists humorously remarked, ”It's quite a(n)boring job always sitting around hoping nothing will actually happen.“ But that's what they have essentially done. They hope that any differences between Dolly and the sheep she was copied from are so minor that they go unnoticed.”We don't want Dolly to live longer or jump higher. Some say that we are deliberately trying to create animals with remarkable qualities. This is not true.We simply are showing that we can make a(n)identical copy of the original safely and that the sheep is normal.“ Despite the protests of the scientists working on the project, the debate over whether cloning is safe goes on.The US congress organized a national commission to study the legal and moral implications of cloning. Many would like to abolish all research on cloning. And while everyone argues, the scientists are simply continuing to watch Dolly. Tend to sb 照看某人

My friend, Anna, said to me before I married Mike, ”He's fine now, but wait until after you've married him.“ She thought that her own experience with marriage was applicable to mine.Without even being asked, she cited all of the problems she's had with her husband. The disputes ranged from him not sharing responsibility for household tasks to how often he went out at night. And every time, Anna complained, her husband would find justification for what he did.”If I were you,“ she advised, ”I'd get everything documented in writing.“If there is something desirable about him now, make sure you get an agreement from him that he will continue it after you are married.I tried to dispose of her advice saying that I thought Mike and I could handle it without such an agreement. She just dismissed what I had to say with laughter.”You can't believe him just because what he said.Once you marry him, he'll think he owns you, and everything will change,“ she said.I tried to ignore her advice, but the next day I changed my mind and talked to Mike.”Mike,“ I said,”I'm not going to marry you unless you promise to always stay the same.“ He replied, ”You've been talking to Anna again, haven't you.

You have seen a friend succeed. No doubt you feel joy at this. You love your friend, and maybe you even helped him accomplish his goal.still, there is another feeling, a dark feeling, within you.You begin to wish that it was you who was enjoying success, and you begin to even dislike your friend. At first this envious feeling starts off like a tiny seed. But then, like a seed, it grows. It threatens to overtake you.Of course you feel bad about your feelings, as they have become a(n)handicap to your friendship.Still, there doesn't seem to be anything that you can do.Facing your friend invariably leads to more tension between you.Avoiding him just seems to widen the gulf between you.Instead of feeling guilty about your envy or hating your friend, you should take a different approach.Use your friend's success as a challenge. He has succeeded. This means that you can succeed as well.By thinking this way, you are harnessing your feelings and redirecting them into a course of action that won't ruin your friendship.Remember that friendships can survive friendly competition. You cannot, however, maintain your friendship if you harbor envy.

第三篇:新視野大學英語讀寫教程第三冊Unit_6_Section_A教案
Unit 6 Section A How to Prepare for Earthquake
I.Background information 1.The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake
At 5:13 on the morning of April 18th, 1906, the city of San Francisco was shaken by a terrible earthquake.A large part of the city was destroyed and a large number of buildings were burnt. The number of people who lost homes reached as many as 250, 000.About 700 people died in the earthquake and the fires.Another earthquake shocked San Francisco on October 17th, 1989.It was the second strongest earthquake and about one hundred people were killed. It happened in the evening as people were traveling home.A wide and busy road fell onto the below.A lot of people were killed in their cars, but a few lucky ones were not hurt.Luckily the 1989 earthquake did not happen in the center of town but about 50 kilometers away.In one part of the town many buildings were destroyed. These buildings were over 50 years old, so they were not strong enough. There were a lot of fires all over the city. The electricity was cut off for several days too.Scientists explain that the outside of the earth is made of different plates. At San Francisco the Pacific plate meets the North American plate. When suddenly these two plates jump, an earthquake is felt. When the 1906 earthquake happened, the Pacific plate jumped 5-6 meters to the north. We cannot stop earthquake, but we can do things to make sure they do not destroy a whole city.First, it is not a good idea to build houses along the lines where two of the earth’s plates join together.Second, if you think there may be an earthquake, it is better to build houses on rock not on sand.Third, you must make the houses as strong as possible.Weak buildings will fall down in an earthquake, but strong ones may stay up.Scientists are afraid that one day an even bigger earthquake will hit the area around San Francisco. They call it “The Big One”.However, people today are still building more houses. The population in and around San Francisco is now ten times more than it was in 1906.This means that if there is another big earthquake, a great many houses and buildings will be destroyed.2.The 1976 Tangshan Earthquake
1)Which city earns the name “Brave City of China”?
Tangshan 2)The deadliest earthquake of the 20th century, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit the sleeping city of Tangshan at 3:42 a.m.on July 28, 1976.3)Which of the following gave some advance warnings of an impending earthquake?
A.Well water rose and fell with cracking or gas.B.Chickens refused to eat and ran around chirping.C.Mice and yellow weasels ran around to hide.D.A goldfish jumped wildly in its bowl.E.Strange lights(fireballs)as well as loud sounds were seen the night preceding the earthquake.4)The Tangshan earthquake lasted approximately 14-16 seconds. After the earthquake hit, 242419 people were dead or dying;164581 people severely injured. In 7218 households, all members of the family were killed by the earthquake.5)Over two million people died in the earthquake in the 20th century.About 0.6 billion people live in the strong earthquake zone throughout the world.6)93 percent of the residential buildings and 78 percent of the industrial buildings were completely destroyed.3.What’s your insight into earthquakes?
Because they have no warning and allow people no time to react to them in an effective way.As described in the video, one second you live in this big beautiful city and ten seconds later it is flat.So on any scale of instant destructivity, few natural disasters can come close to earthquakes. At 11:43 A.M.on June 7, 1692, for example, an earthquake struck Port Royal, Jamaica. In the space of less than fifty seconds, that thriving port sank into the Caribbean. An eyewitness described the scene.“ In many places the earth cracked, opened and shut, with a motion quick and fast.People were swallowed up;in others they were caught by the middle, and pressed to death.”
In the 17th and 18th centuries, it was believed in the Western world that because earthquakes normally occurred in non-Christian countries, they were signs of God’s anger with the inhabitants of these areas. In fact, every day the earth is shaken by hundreds of small earthquakes, most going unnoticed. They usually occur along the boundaries of thin plates that cover the earth like egg shells.Driven by the heat deep within the earth’s core, plates grind against each other along lines called faults. When plates find their motions blocked, stress builds up.Finally the fault gives way.Released energy races through the earth in a form of seismic waves(震波)and a quake occurs.4.How much do you know about other natural disasters?
In addition to the earthquake, the human society as a whole is also cursed with a long list of other natural disasters, among which are flood, mud-rock flow(泥石流), landslide(山體滑坡), typhoon, hurricane(颶風), tornado(龍卷風), snowstorm(暴風雪), hailstorm(冰雹), sand storm(沙塵暴), drought(干旱), plague of locusts(蝗災), the spread of desert, the spread of infectious diseases such as SARS(非典), and volcanic eruptions(火山噴發(fā)), the most famous example of which is the Great Pompeii, quickly covered with volcanic ashes. The contributors to these natural disasters are complex and varied. Some disasters such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions result from the movement of plates along the weaknesses in the Earth’s crust. Many others, like flood, sand storm, and the spread of desert, stem from human activities.Man’s mindless enthusiasm for unrestrained economic growth has led to a sharp decline of forestry, a rapid desertification of farming land, an irreparable depletion of ozone layer, a global worsening of greenhouse effect, and a swift extinction of species, all of which in turn bring about more disasters.II.Structure Analysis 1.How can we know about warning signs of earthquakes?

Education concerning how to survive an earthquake.1.What is the text mainly about?
The essay is centered around the main theme — How to predict, prevent, and prepare for earthquakes.2.How is the text organized?
The writer centers his writing on three aspects of the topic—earthquake prediction, earthquake prevention, and earthquake preparation. In the end, he concludes his writing with more emphasis placed on people’s preparation for earthquakes. So the text can fall structurally into four parts.Part I Prediction: People predicted a quake by wiring the earth and sea to detect movements, watch-ing animals and plants for warning signs;and seeing if the amount of radon(Rn)in the water under the surface of the Earth waxes before an earthquake.Devices for developing it: Exemplification:(Para.1)In Japan, scientists have wired the Earth and sea? The Chinese have traditionally watched animals and plants for? For example, ? Before the Hansin earthquake in Japan, ?
Part II Prevention: To prevent buildings from threatening our lives, new structures need to be built with an I-joint steel, with columns and horizontal beams of equal strength, and with light roofs;and pillars for highway bridges need to be enclosed in steel.Devices for developing it: Deduction:(Para.2)General Statement: People would also like to? prevent? Details: 1)Most people are killed by? 2)? with steel joint;3)? of equal strength 4)? enclosed in steel.Part III Preparation: To prepare for a great quake, you need to keep survival supplies at home and at work;have proper tools ready at hand;make sure what to do in case of a quake;and plan for family re-unity.Devices for developing it: Deduction:(Paras.4-6)General statement: People ? need to prepare themselves.Details: 1)? have supplies of water and food?;2)Have a fire extinguisher handy;3)Every family needs to have earthquake emergency plans.Part IV Conclusion: Even if prediction becomes possible, people still have to do their best to prevent disasters by improving building structures and by being personally prepared.Devices for developing it: Induction:(Para.7)Known facts: 1)? scientists learn much about how quakes work;2)It will be possible to predict quakes with accuracy;3)But people still have to prevent quakes. Conclusion: Education concerning ? should be a major emphasis for all ? projects.III.New words and expressions 1.to watch sth.for? / to watch for
