Good morning.I can't begin to tell you how honored I am to be before such a distinguished group of entrepreneurs.早上好。諸位都是創業的杰出代表，我在此發表講話，首先感到榮幸之至。

On behalf of President Obama, I want to welcome you to the Presidential Summit on Entrepreneurship.我代表奧巴馬總統歡迎諸位出席總統倡導的創業峰會。

Last year, when President Obama detailed in Cairo his vision for this summit, he did so knowing that ties between America, Muslim-majority countries and Muslim communities around the world should be based on more than concerns about security or diplomatic issues – even though they are critical.去年，奧巴馬總統在開羅(Cairo)詳述他對這次會議的設想，他認為美國與全世界穆斯林占人口大多數的國家及穆斯林社區的關系應該有更廣泛的基礎，不應該僅限于安全或外交方面的問題，盡管這些問題十分重要。

As we look at the history of Islamic civilization, we see a rich tradition of invention and innovation.回顧伊斯蘭文明史，我們看到發明創造的悠久傳統。

There's a young woman here who built a thriving tailoring business in Taliban controlled Afghanistan;a young man who launched a nonprofit to promote entrepreneurship in the Palestinian territories, and a doctor from Nigeria working to advance health among that country's young people.你們中間有一位年輕的女性曾在塔利班控制下的阿富汗創辦生意興隆的縫紉企業。有一位青年男子發起了一個非營利組織，在巴勒斯坦領土倡導創業。還有一位來自尼日利亞的醫生為增進本國青年的健康而努力工作。

There are over one billion people living in Muslim-majority countries today.如今，有超過10億人在穆斯林占人口大多數的國家生活。

In the last several decades the Asia Pacific region has emerged as a key driver of international

The Asia Pacific is home to more than four billion people.Three of the world’s four largest

2011年9月9日 I.導言

陳校長，北京外國語大學的教職員工和同學們：

感謝你們今天邀請我來這里。非常榮幸來到這里，并祝賀你們慶祝你們70周年的校慶。

新學年的開始，對學生們來說標志著一個新的開端，而且也正適合我在這兒談談我自己的新開始。

我想說，我非常感謝中國人民對我家人和我的熱情歡迎。

正如你們所知，我的祖籍在廣東省臺山。從我們到這兒起，中國人民就讓我們全家人感覺，簡單地說，像在家里一樣--我們很感謝。

我知道人們對我作為大使的任期有著非常高的期望。

我知道為什么。我是第一個擔任此職的華裔美國人。

并且，我確實有著過硬的履歷：

?作為一名州長； ?作為商務部長；和

?作為一個掌握了自己購買咖啡和自己背包藝術的男人。

作為美國大使，我會盡我所能。

盡管還要做很多工作來加強和擴大美中合作，以及在我們互不正視時，管理我們的分歧，但我相信我們關系的整體狀態是強大的，我開始履任大使一職正是基于此信心。

不過，今天我想討論我相信在加強美中關系中我們所有人都必須采取的步驟。

II.美中關系的狀態

要了解中美關系的走向，回憶一下它已經走了多遠會有所幫助。

當我1968年第一次上大學時，這樣的聚會是不可能的利用多邊外交和制裁如電燈，電視，個人電腦，以及如此深刻地改變了我們生活方方面面的互聯網。

從火藥爆炸的閃光到電力帶來的光明，從印刷的紙頁的到網頁，從航行于世界各水域到瀏覽互聯網，我們兩個國家對今天的世界貢獻良多。試想一下，我們能結成伙伴做些什么來改善明天的世界。

IV.開放性和美國經驗

這就是為什么奧巴馬總統啟動了十萬強動議，把美國學生帶到中國生活和學習，為什么我們歡迎更多的中國學生到美國，體驗美國文化和美國社會。

當然，更多的數以百萬計的中國人已經以移民的身份體驗了美國，就像我的家庭一樣。

在19世紀90年代，我的祖父首先離開了在江門附近的祖籍村，來到美國。他到達了華盛頓奧林匹亞，以做仆人為交換，換取上英語課的機會。

一百年后，我被選為華盛頓州州長，成為美國大陸上第一位亞裔美國人州長。我搬進了州長官邸，它距離我祖父曾在里面刷盤子掃地的房子僅一公里之遙。我有時問我自己：
