唐代高僧懷素自幼家貧，念不起書，父母就送他到一座寺廟當(dāng)和尚。剛開始時(shí)，他以練字消磨時(shí)光，漸漸地對(duì)書法產(chǎn)生了濃厚的興趣，若一天不練字，就悵然若失，渾身不舒服。但是，他哪里有錢去買紙？聽人家說，芭蕉葉子上可以寫字，而且寫的字可以抹掉，他高興極了，幾年間他就種了數(shù)百株芭蕉。他用毛筆在大葉子上認(rèn)真書寫，練習(xí)筆力、腕力，使其旋轉(zhuǎn)自如。日日寫，月月練，芭蕉葉子用完了，就做了一個(gè)漆盤和一個(gè)漆板，在上面一練就是幾個(gè)時(shí)辰，有時(shí)連飯也忘了吃。為了讓字體飛動(dòng)而不輕浮，蒼勁而又不顯干枯，他便仔細(xì)揣摩前輩書法家的碑帖，反復(fù)練習(xí)。當(dāng)對(duì)一個(gè)字有所領(lǐng)悟時(shí)，就高興得跳起來大喊大叫。天長日久，漆盤和漆板全都磨穿了，用禿的筆頭也有成千上萬。據(jù)說，唐代的毛筆頭可以更換，他就把換下來的筆頭埋在屋外的一個(gè)土坑里，久而久之，土坑逐漸填平增高，竟成了一個(gè)高高的土堆，叫“筆冢”。

《伊索寓言》中有一個(gè)小故事：在一個(gè)風(fēng)雨交加的夜晚，有一個(gè)窮人到富人家討飯。

“滾開！”富人家的仆人吼道，“不要來打攪我們。”

窮人說：“只要讓我進(jìn)去，在你們火爐上烤干衣服就行了。”仆人以為這不需要花費(fèi)什么，就讓他進(jìn)去了。

這個(gè)可憐人，這是請(qǐng)求廚娘給他一個(gè)小鍋，以便他“煮點(diǎn)石頭湯喝”。“石頭湯？”廚娘說，“我倒想看看你怎樣能用石頭做成湯”。于是她就答應(yīng)了。窮人于是到路上撿了塊石頭洗凈后放在鍋里煮。

“可是，你總得放點(diǎn)鹽吧”。廚娘說，給了他一些鹽，后來又給了他豌豆、薄荷、香菜。最后，又把能夠收拾到的碎肉末都放在湯里。
