這是一部比那些大部頭小說顯得短小的多的長篇小說，但它同樣具有大部頭小說所具有的震撼人心的效果，以及高超的藝術造詣，堪稱經典名著中的典范作品。

這是一部關于靈魂的小說，每個人都有自己的靈魂，但有的人維護著靈魂，有的人損害著靈魂，有的人丟失了靈魂，于是這個世界充滿了千姿百態的人生和人的故事。

主人公海斯特·白蘭胸前佩戴著烙有靈魂恥辱的紅字——大大的一個A。在倍受折磨的道德鞭笞下，進行著靈魂的救贖。但她是一個不屈于命運的女人，在她的一生中充滿了對命運的蔑視。她懷疑這世俗道德的合理性，但同時又矛盾的意識到靈魂的邪-惡，人性的復雜可見一斑。這種宗教的感情糾葛，對于沒有宗教信仰的人來說很難理解，我就是這樣一個無法理解的人。宗教已經是西方人生活的一部分，離開宗教的生活，一定是很痛苦的。但我沒有宗教經驗，所以根本無法體會主人公的心理。這也是我理解小說的障礙，但我卻是沒辦法去克服。

《紅字》是納撒尼爾(1804~1864年)于19世紀中所創作的一部長篇小說。在這部小說中，霍桑除了對人性的脆弱與悲傷進行深入的探討，并且融入了影響他個人極為深遠的清教徒遺傳，深刻剖析罪的意識對身心靈的影響、尖銳地批判已經淪為形式主義的清教精神、探討個人在自由與權威中的矛盾掙扎。故事表面上看來只是在敘述一個簡單的浪漫愛情故事(這不難理解，因為《紅字在山的那邊讀后感》的副標題叫做“A Romance”)，但它的主題卻是學者們一直以來爭議的對象。當我在研究這本歷經那么多批評或贊賞的書，絕對領悟到一點就是不能僅僅停留于對《紅字》文本的闡釋上，要將霍桑的創作置于西方歷史性問題的大視域中來加以分析它的主題。這樣才能證明霍桑是19世紀美國文學界最杰出的文學家。

《紅字》一開始，作者就寫下這樣一段話: “新殖民地的締造者們，不論他們原先可能會規劃出什么人類美德和幸福的一個烏托邦，都一定會認識到，他們最初的實際需要之一，就是劃出一部分處女地作為墓地，再劃出另一部分作為監獄的地基。”作者以宏觀的視角透露出17世紀美國殖民統治時期的社會背景。我們從《紅字》里看到的卻是另一個景象。普林和羅杰才是得到社會道德法律規范的認可的。與自然相愛的人一起生活會被社會感恩老師讀后感所擯棄，而為一個名義上是丈夫的人守節，生活在孤獨中卻被社會承認，這正是不合理的社會規條所造成的不文明現象。普林無法掙脫命運的擺布，她根本就不可能靠自己的力量逃脫宗教精神牢籠的禁錮。如果說普林能自己選擇的話，她一定會追隨丁梅斯代爾，而不是羅杰。可惜沒有人會尊重這樣子的選擇，不管她是一開始就說出真相也好，生完了小珠兒才說也好，都不會得到肯定，甚至還要加以懲罰。可見當時的清教教規是多么的虛偽啊!假如神是充滿慈愛的，身為跟隨他的教徒也應該是以愛和寬容來拯救普林的靈魂，而不是將她推到千里之外，更不應該將她的罪行公告天下。作者在表達他對赫絲特& #8226;普林的同情時，給那象征恥辱的紅色的A字(Adultery:通奸女 犯)賦予了新的象征意義。紅色正是代表著赫絲特愛國的書,普林和丁梅斯代爾抑制不住青春的沖動和愛慕對方的心，紅色也象征了生命、力量和熱情。無情的教徒卻把青春的熱情之火給撲滅了。

雖然在世人的眼中普林是因為觸犯了清教法規的第七戒，被制定為通奸罪而須在胸前顯眼的位置縫上一個紅色大寫字母“A”。她的敢于承擔責任的形象跟牧師丁梅斯代爾懦弱、憂郁、整天神經兮兮的形象成了一個極大的對比。波士頓的人們為她胸前的“A”字起了另一個解釋---Able，說“紅字是她職業的象征”，“意味著‘能干’。作為一位女性，而且她背負著那么沉重”的負擔，她仍能靠著自己的力量得到別人的認同，這實在是一件了不起的事情。我認為珠兒是該小說的最高主題，珠兒的象征意義就是霍桑的整個愛情觀，亦即:愛情是神圣，寶貴，美好的，它遵循的只是自然法則，而不應用虛偽的社會法則來只有一個地球讀后感禁錮或扼殺愛情。

霍桑將海斯特追求自然人利益的思想表現得淋漓盡致。在海斯特看來，追求愛情這是個人的事，與社會、道德、宗教無關。所以她形式上雖然接受了懲罰胸前佩帶紅色ａ字，而在思想上卻“沒有接受懲罰她的那些社會道德規范”［２］。而且這一罪之罰的形式標志ａ字也被她繡得光彩奪目，并成為“她進入別的女人不敢涉足的領域的通行證”。為拯救行將失去生活勇氣的牧師，海斯特勸牧師離開小鎮，到自由美好的地方生活，過一家三口的正常生活這也是自然人最起碼的要求。

二、人的自然屬性與社會屬性的沖突集中表現在幾個人物身上

海斯特的自然屬性是真實的，她的社會屬性卻是虛偽的、虛假的。因而她不存在兩種屬性（兩個自我）的矛盾，她自始至終都只有一個自我。表面上看，海斯特“誠實”地“招認”了自己的罪行，并“順從”地接受社會、宗教、法律對她的懲罰。但她內心深入并沒有一刻順從過。在《紅字》第十九章中，她將ａ字摘掉仍在林間地上。這表明她憎恨這一切。她始終游離于社會之外，并伺機逃離社會。是社會拋棄了她還是她拋棄了社會？

人的自然屬性與社會屬性沖突的焦點體現在丁梅斯德身上。“他充當著牧師和情人的雙重角色，是宗教與自然，社會與人性之間沖突的一個焦點。［４］這里的宗教、社會正是人的社”會屬性的內容，而自然與人性則是人的自然屬性的內容。表面上丁梅斯德充當著眾人信服的、虔誠的牧師，置所應負的責任于不顧，內心雖也受著煎熬，但卻能若無其事地布道，這說明他的社會屬性一開始戰勝了自然屬性，并長達七年之久。然而追求正常人生活的渴望卻一刻也未停止過，在《紅字》第１９章中丁梅斯德談到，“你無法想象，我的心里多么害怕這次會面，又多么渴望它！”一語道破其矛盾的自我。

三、啟迪

個人組成了社會，個人的愿望形成了社會的規范。但社會利益與個人利益間又存在著差異，于是就產生了矛盾，因而也就有了人的自然屬性與社會屬性的矛盾。
