通過多方打探，他核實了唐格拉爾、費爾南和維爾福陷害自己的實情，并得知自己的未婚妻梅爾塞苔絲已經同費爾南結了婚，而自己的老父親在病中抑郁而死，他的仇恨之火越燃越旺，但他還要為復仇做許多準備工作！8年之后，唐泰斯回到了巴黎。他化名為基督山伯爵，身份是銀行家。此時，維爾福是巴黎法院檢察官，唐格拉爾成了銀行家，費爾南成了莫爾塞夫伯爵，三人都飛黃騰達，地位顯赫。[6]

在復仇之前，唐泰斯決定先要報恩。法老號的船主是一個忠厚、勇敢而且熱情的人。他曾在唐泰斯落難時為他四處奔波，還幫他照顧年邁的父親。后來莫雷爾先生破產了，絕望當中，他準備自殺。唐泰斯知道之后，替他還清了債務，送給他女兒一筆優厚的嫁妝，還送給他一艘新的法老號。然后，唐泰斯說：“我已經借天主之手報答了恩人；現在復仇之神授我以他的權力，命我去懲罰仇人！”在報答了曾在他危難之際給過他無私幫助的人之后，唐泰斯開始一步步準備自己的復仇計劃了。[7]

基督山伯爵的目標首先是費爾南。費爾南為了謀取一切之私利可以說是壞事做盡，此時他更名換姓，過著養尊處優的生活。基督山伯爵早就摸清了他的底細，伯爵借他人之手在報紙上披露了費爾南20年代在希臘出賣和殺害了阿里總督的事實，引起了議員們的質詢。在聽證會上，基督山伯爵收養的阿里總督的女兒海黛出席作證，揭發了費爾南在與土耳其人的無恥的交易的中，不但把城堡拱手相讓，而且把他的恩主殺害，并把恩主的妻子、女兒作為一部分戰利品，賣得40萬法郎的罪行。審查委員會斷定費爾南犯了判逆罪和暴行迫害罪，這使得費爾南名譽掃地，狼狽不堪。費爾南本來寄希望于兒子阿爾貝，希望他能夠同基督山伯爵決斗，以此雪“恥”，但他的妻子（唐泰斯的未婚妻梅爾塞苔絲）早就認出了基督山伯爵就是唐泰斯，她把真相告訴了阿爾貝。最后阿爾貝不顧自己的名聲，與基督山伯爵講和，并決定同母親一起拋棄沾滿了鮮血的家產，不辭而別。無奈之下，費爾南只有自己去找基督山伯爵決斗。決斗時，基督山伯爵用很冷淡的口吻嘲諷地說：“您不就是那個在滑鐵盧之戰前夕開小差逃走的小兵費爾南嗎？您不就是那個在西班牙當法軍向導和間諜的費爾南中尉嗎？您不就是那個背叛、出賣并謀害自己恩主的費爾南中將嗎？而這些個費爾南加起來，不就是現在身為法國貴族議員的您嗎？”最后，基督山伯爵說出了自己的真實身份。費爾南失魂落魄地回到家里，正遇上自己的妻子和兒子離家出走，一個去鄉下隱居，一個去投軍，極度害怕與絕望使得他開槍自殺了。[2]

基督山伯爵的第二個仇人就是唐格拉爾。唐格拉爾在法軍入侵西班牙時靠供應軍需品發了橫財，他的銀行可以支配幾百萬法郎的資產。基督山伯爵為了取得唐格拉爾的信任，拿出歐洲大銀行家的三封信。在唐泰斯那里開了三個可以“無限透支”的帳戶，懾服了唐格拉爾。之后他又收買了電報局的雇員，發了一份虛報軍情的電報，誘使唐格拉爾出售債卷，折損了一筆巨款。基督山伯爵于是將一個逃犯——維爾福和唐格拉爾夫人的私生子安德烈亞·卡瓦爾坎蒂打扮成意大利親王的兒子，并介紹給唐格拉爾。為了避免銀行的倒閉，唐格拉爾將女兒歐仁妮嫁給了“親王之子”。在婚禮上，憲兵逮捕了這個逃犯，讓唐格拉爾出了大丑。在無奈之下，唐格拉爾竊取了濟貧機構的500萬法郎逃往意大利。途中，他落在了基督山伯爵的強盜朋友路易吉·萬帕的手上。他們先把他餓得半死，然后以10萬法郎的高價向他出售一頓飯，直到把他的500萬法郎全部都榨光。唐格拉爾被迫為自己所犯的罪行懺悔，而此時基督山伯爵出現了，向他公開了身份，說：“我就是那個被你出賣和污蔑的人。我的未婚妻被迫改嫁，我的父親被你害得餓死。我本來也應該讓你死于饑餓，但我饒恕你！”唐格拉爾聽后大叫一聲，倒在地上縮成一團。隨后，基督山伯爵給了他5萬法郎讓他自謀生路。唐格拉爾飽受折磨和驚嚇，他的頭發全白了。[8]

基督山伯爵大仇已報，他深深地感謝上帝。在他看來，他所做的一切都是秉承上帝的旨意，假基督之手在人間揚善懲惡。他說：“現在我的工作完成了，我的使命也終止了。別了，巴黎！”于是，他同海黛遠走高飛了。

the people in darkness.He was remembered by people,by history.
