我自己是從教授雅思開始轉向教授托福口語的,所謂的轉向并不是之后再也不教授雅思的口語課程而是同時教授雅思口語和托福口語,之所以交代這一點是因為絕大多數的雅思口語老師僅僅是教授一門雅思口語的話會有局限這個筆者會另有時間解釋,但是對于托福口語老師而言,絕大多數的托福口語老師都有教授雅思口語的經歷,我自己的這個經歷對于很多即將教授托福口語或者已經同事教授兩門口語課程的老師將是既具有價值的。
首先需要明白托福口語學生的問題是什么,絕大多數的老師因為是從大班轉型成為現在的老師的,除了新東方極個別學校還有很大的班級之外全國的教學機構現在早已經轉型成為小班教學為主,但是因為老師們是從大班教學的模式轉變過來,主要的問題就是教課的方式只要是個人展示型而不是問題解決型,也就是說老師只是在講自己認為對學生重要的東西而不是講對學生而言重要的東西。筆者認為托福的學生最主要的問題有兩個,一個是對于考試的題型不熟悉,第二就是不知道怎么說。
所謂的對于考試的題型不熟悉,乍一聽,感覺好像這個問題很簡單,實際上這是托福口語培訓教學里面的一個大問題,很多的老師在講解提醒的時候只是一味的解釋題型并不去認真的追究到底問什么ETS出這個題型,如果在講解提醒的時候告訴學生問什么出這個題型,學生會對考試的理解深刻很多,另外很多的老師在講解題型的時候感覺題型就是按照托福官方指南(Official Guide for TOEFL)里面題型的介紹的英文讀一遍或者簡單的翻譯一遍,殊不知這樣子做對于學生后來對于托福口語題型的理解造成很大的困惑。
那么怎樣才能夠避免這個問題?筆者多年的經驗告訴我們在講解題型的時候要放慢速度,比如說第一題和第二題在講解的時候要告訴學生第一題出題的思路是要求學生在15秒的準備之后可以用自己的語言在45秒鐘之內講清楚自己的一個觀點。第二題是讓學生在兩個選擇當中選擇一個出來之后在解釋清楚自己的觀點。(現在的托福口語實際上已經很大的變化,限于篇幅不能在這里繼續討論)如果只是這么講,這兩道題會讓學生丈二和尚摸不著頭腦,因為學生會問第一我該說什么?第二我怎么說?筆者自己的上百個一對一的托福口語學生(上大班的學生因為交流不夠多并沒有足夠多的信息去證明筆者的觀點,但是筆者每年教授近百位的一對一的學生因為每個人都建立有檔案可以跟蹤學生的學習進步情況,更可以讓筆者了解學生口語成績的提高,或者說因為什么提高,怎樣才是讓一個學生在最短時間最快速,最大程度的提高一個中國學生托福口語成績的方法,因為筆者的長期實踐,甚至會出現學生的口語和聽力倒掛的情況,就是說學生的聽力成績為個位數但是口語卻考到了20分的情況,這就說明口語教學方法的成功,或者說是找到了學生真正地問題)。這些學生在上課的時候最集中的問題就是上過了大班但是根本不知道托福口語一二題是什么,主要原因就是在班里面教師只是在講自己認為重要的東西,教師因為個人教學經驗不充足導致上課的速度無法掌握所以出現快速的推進12題,可是中國的學生恰恰是12題目最有可能拿到滿分。因此,教師一定要不斷地上課,不斷在上課當中學習怎么控制托福口語12題的講題速度。原則就是一個,一定要讓學生明白兩點。第一托福口語的答題思路。第二,托福口語中話題發展(topic development)的重要性。
關于答題思路,一定要讓學生理解給出觀點,之后是理由,之后是細節的答題思路。筆者是在上百位一對一的學生身上,不斷地在教學當中找到了怎么講授這一個題目的方法,非常的具有可操作性,希望對各位同仁有所幫助。重點就是,老師自己一定要認真備課,自己一定要可以找出學生的問題。因為觀點--理由--細節。乍一聽,好像是非常的簡單,隨便一

個人都可以講得很清楚觀點理由和細節,但是最簡單的事情也最難,往往一個班級里面不管班級的人數多少能夠真的在講解當中,在計時器的模式之下可以講一道題目就可以按照觀點理由細節講出來的學生幾乎沒有!是幾乎沒有!為什么幾乎沒有,是因為學生沒有經過充分的準備,腦子里面幾乎是一片空白的情況之下講的東西之間根本沒有任何的聯系,這種情況下錄音如果是在真是的考試里面,就只能停留在兩分水平,再也無法提高自己的成績,即使是一些學生可以考到三分,也是比較低的三分。在這種情況下如果一個老師不知道繼續進行下去,那么這個學生的口語成績一定不會高于23分,因為學生的并不知道怎么提高,正是因為筆者找到了怎么講解12題目的這個方法,所以筆者的很多托福口語學生可以成功跨越23分,一直向上達到24以上的成績。那么,重點就是一定要在講解的時候讓學生錄音,甚至讓學生把自己想說的話寫下來,之后教師一定要指出學生在邏輯上的錯誤(logic problems),也就是所說的話題的發展的問題,通常情況的問題是學生說的理由和他的觀點沒有任何的關系,或者說他說的細節不夠具體,或者是他說的細節并不是和理由相關的就是跑題了。這對老師的要求就極其高,但是如果這樣教學的話學生就可以自己意識到自己講的東西邏輯不夠清晰,在老師的帶領之下學生會漸漸的意識到自己應該怎么練習。如果一個老師可以在教學的時候用筆者剛才所提到的方法,他就可以很好的控制上課的速度,讓學生能夠在一個自己真實的節奏下面,由老師引導,一步步的了解托福口語12題所考察的方向,不僅僅提高了自己口語水平,也同時很快速的提高了學生的口語成績。
所以一定讓學生進一步明白第二點,就是托福的口語12題一定要在說的注意自己的邏輯,就是話題的發展(topic development)。這個可以通過不斷地讓學生交作業來完成。絕大多數的托福口語老師在教學之后學生的成績沒有明顯的提高,或者,一些水平特別高的學生其實困惑的12題,因為3456題到了某一個點之后僅僅是聽聽力和復述的問題,但是也懇請剛開始代課的托福口語老師不要就以為是這么簡單的問題,3456題還是有很高要求的復述,尤其是4,6題,任何一個學生想考出4,6題的滿分,都必須要有非常好的復述能力,有些題目甚至是老師都講不清楚。但是12題是一個學生的水平越高,越不知道怎么準備,因為在一個學生清楚的理解了觀點理由和細節的邏輯關系之后,真正痛苦的才剛剛開始,就是怎么樣在講的時候不跑題并且一定要是非常切題的細節。這個必須在非常嚴格的一篇篇寫答案并且老師必須非常認真的改正(通過讓學生提交寫的答案和錄音來完成)。筆者認為一個合格的鄭州托福口語培訓老師在上課的時候如果是以兩個小時為一個單位,那么在上大課的時候應該至少有4次也就是8個小時的時間來講解托福口語的12題,這個原則同樣適用于大班的教學,也同樣適用于一對一的教學,但是一對一的教學是分散的并不是連續性的上八個小時。
