用英語表達各種“笑” FROM “SMILE” TO “LAUGHTER”

十六世紀的英國詩人、政治家F.Greville(1554-1624)曾經說過，“Man is the only creature endowed with the power of laughter.”（人是唯一與生具有笑的能力的動物）。因此，在這里就英文里在各種不同情況之下不同層次的「笑」作一簡單的介紹。在本文里，所談的「笑」則將限于當做動詞使用的「笑」。「笑」大致可以分成兩大類：第一類是「不出聲」地笑，第二類則為「出聲」地笑。一般說來，「既不出聲又不開口地笑」以“to smile”為最常用的字眼，而「又出聲，也開口地笑」則以“to laugh”為最普遍使用的字匯。首先來談談「不出聲」的笑。

(A)不出聲的笑：「不出聲的笑」又可以再分為二：一種是「既不出聲又不開口（閉嘴）地」笑，另一種是「開口但不出聲地」笑。

第一種的「既不出聲又不開口地笑」最常用的動詞是“to smile”（微笑）。“To smile”是指一個人壓抑不住心底涌上來的喜悅而笑逐顏開，莞爾而笑者。通常“smile”是表示開心、友善、親切、慈祥等的情感：如，She smiled tenderly.“（她和藹地微笑。）Look, that charming girl smiles at you!（你瞧，那位迷人的女孩向您微笑！）。

雖然”smile“也有表示「痛苦、憐憫、輕視、諷刺」等意的笑：如，He smiled bitterly.（他苦笑了）⊿he smiled coldly.（她冷笑了）等等。也有職業性的「皮笑肉不笑」的smile，如影、歌星登臺表演時所現出的嫣然一笑。”To smile“用做不及物動詞時，一般譯為「微笑，莞爾、現出笑容」等；用做及物動詞時，則常翻成「以微笑表示??」。

To simper/to smirk：這兩個字，常被認為是同義字而翻成「傻笑，假笑」等。根據Webster, Random House, American Heritage等辭典的解釋”simper“的字義都很相近，是指”to smile in a silly or self-conscious manner;to smirk“（傻笑，癡笑；不自然地微笑）。對于”to smirk“所下的定義則分別是”to smile in a conceited, knowing or annoying, complacent way/to smile in an affected or offensively familiar way/to smile in a self-conscious, knowing or simpering way“（假笑、尷尬地微笑；得意地微笑）。To sneer : ”to sneer“則指”to smile scornfully curl the lip in contempt“（嘲笑：或翹起嘴唇以表輕蔑）。然而，”simper“的傻笑，卻也常帶著「得意忘形」或「沾沾自喜」而微笑之意；”smirk“則有「嘲笑」或「懷著敵意地笑」，甚至有「獰笑」的意味。這三個動詞都有不及物動詞與及物動詞的兩種用法。當做及物動詞使用時，”simper“是常譯為「帶著傻笑（癡笑）說??，或表示??」，”smirk“是「以假笑表示??」，”sneer“則可翻成「以嘲笑的態度說??」。第三種是「不出聲，但開口地」笑是—”to grin“。

”To grin“是比”to smile“要把嘴稍為向上拉開，并且露出牙齒而不出聲地，開朗地笑。一般來說，”grin“是用來表示高興或滿足的心情。美國第三十四任總統艾森豪將軍，生前在群眾面前，總是笑口常開，笑容可掬。他那副爽朗而看起來誠懇無邪的笑容就是”grin“的典型笑法。如果”to grin“是心情開朗而又是出自內心笑出來的話，常常極富吸引力的。艾森豪總統曾受美國國民，尤其美國婦女愛戴，其原因也可能在此。然而，”grin“如果笑得不妥當，且不是出自真心的話，會給人愚蠢、調皮或不認真的印象的。

”To grin“可用做不及物動詞，也可用做及物動詞。當做不及物動詞使用時，通常翻成「露齒而笑；咧嘴而笑」；用做及物動詞時，則譯為「露齒（咧嘴）而笑以示??」。這個翻譯或許不是很高雅，但通常為求字義上的準確性，辭典編輯者多不太敢自作主張自由發揮。

”To chortle“一詞是Lewis Carroll（英國數學家，兒童讀物作家，1832-1898)在他所著”Through the Looking Glass“一書里，把”chuckle“與”snort“二字合并而造出來的新字—指「閉嘴低聲咯咯輕笑」，也就是在喉嚨里發出來的笑聲”to chuckle throatly“)。如：”He chortled in his joy.“（他高興地咯咯輕笑）。這三個動詞只用做不及物動詞。

最后，我們來談談「捧腹大笑」。這種笑法當然是屬于第一種的「開口而出聲地」笑。一個人是「捧腹大笑」，多數人在一起「捧腹大笑」就變成「哄堂大笑」。這個笑可用”to guffaw“一詞。因為從前婦女們以及高雅的紳士們是不大開嘴巴而笑的。”To guffaw“因而用以指男人在一起時，帶有粗野味道的「哈哈大笑」，「捧腹大笑」或「哄堂大笑」。”To guffaw"也只有不及物動詞的用法而已。至于表達「哈哈大笑，捧腹大笑」，有許多其他說法；下面試舉幾個例句做為本文的結束：
