The arrival of the year 1999 has brought with a near perfect opportunity to take a look back at the last one thousand years, assess man’s successes and failures, and look forward with our predictions of the third millennium.Already this afternoon you’ve heard many assessments and you’ve heard a variety of predictions.A variety so vast, ranging from Lewis Carol’s depiction of celebratory life, to the Irish celebration of death. So vast a variety that it’s difficult to find any common ground amongst the contestants here today.perhaps the only thing that we all share is that we are indeed discussing millennia, the old and the new and the turn of the millennium, and we’re all discussing it in the same language.A few hundred years ago to have held an event like this it would have been imperative that we were all fluent in a number of different tongues, for the approach of combating the language barrier was simply to learn many different languages.Of course people back then had an ulterior motive: that was to ensure that different languages held their different societies or positions, or as King Charles V of Spain put it, “ I speak Spanish to God, Italian to women, French to men and German to my horse.”
Today our approach is somewhat different.Instead of trying to vastly spread our verbal ability across the board, we’ve chosen rather to focus it, concentrating on our ability to master one particular language, the English language.Time magazine recently suggested that by the turn of the millennium, English will be the Lingua Franca for one quarter of the world’s population.Already today sixty percents of the world’s television and radio broadcasts are produced and delivered in English.Seventy percents of the world’s mail addressed in English. And it is the language of choice for almost every bite of computer data sent across the globe. But why English? There are no clear linguistic reasons for its suggested global dominance, certainly the grammar is complicated, the spelling peculiar and the pronunciation eccentric, to say the very least. One would need only look through the dictionary to find the vast list of amusing paradoxes in the English language?quicksand that works slowly, a boxing ring that is in fact square and a guinea pig that’s really neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.Doesn’t it seem odd that one can make amends but not one amend.Or go through the annals of history but not one annal. The reason, ladies and gentlemen, is simple.English is strange, but no where near as strange as some of our alternatives.perhaps I should give you a few idiomatic examples. In English we say “once in a blue moon”.The Italian choose instead “every death of a pope”.Irish doesn’t like our “drop dead”, replacing it rather with the slightly more obscure “you should lie in the earth.” And if you wanted to tell someone off in Spanish our relatively obvious “go fly a kite” would be better served by the phrase “go fry asparagus”.English’s primary advantage is that of flexibility. On the one hand it has the largest vocabulary of all modern languages, allowing us, as its users, to say exactly what we want in exactly the words we choose to use.On the other, globalization has insured the introduction of a business English, a sort of trimmed down variety of the language we’ve all come to know and love. It’s interesting to know that the simple list of just ten words, words like “a”, “and”, “have” and “the”, combined to form one quarter of all those ever used in modern communication.perhaps the real test is: will the global adoption of English as a master language insure the eradication of any misunderstandings that happen today? The answer is not as simple.Russell Hoven once asked: “How many people speak the same language even when they speak the same language?” But one can only hope that our only aim and our only chance of insuring that we communicate effectively with each other is to make sure that we do speak one universal language. In a thousand years time Western clocks will hopefully have ticked onto the year 2999 and we can be assured that scientists, academics and futurists will convene, much like we’ve done today to look back at the third millenium and offer their predictions for the successes of the forth. It’s impossible to imagine what they might say, impossible to imagine what technology they’ll have available or even which planet they’ll hold the meeting on.In fact, quite possibly the only thing we can say for sure is that they’ll be discussing the issues in one common universal language. And that will be the language of the third millennium. And that language without any doubt looks set to be English.Thank you.
I once heard a story about two workers. One day, a reporter went to the site.Ask what the first person doing. The worker grouchy replied that he was only a slave, a low income bricklayer. But the reporter asked second people the same question, the worker's answer is not the same.“I am the luckiest person in the world.” He said, “I am this huge and beautiful part of the building, I used my own efforts to turn the simple bricks into a beautiful masterpiece.”
Their answers are not the same, because they think of a different way of life.We want to see anything in life, we will see what.If you want to pick on others students, want to find fault in business, want to find defects in this world, you can find.Conversely, if you think of a good side, you can find the.If want to ordinary looking extraordinary, you also can find. The construction workers building blocks can be seen from the.Can we? We can see from the lives of ordinary extraordinary? We can see the movement of the perfection of the universe? We can see the natural beauty of rhyme? We can see the life of human beings is pregnant with the imagination of a miracle?
In my opinion, this is just a kind of attitude to life. The world has countless grateful things, there are many terrible things.Because of this, life is so precious and extraordinary ah!
So, if your attention to this fact, the little, ordinary things will take on a completely new extraordinary meaning
As you slowly open your eyes, look around , notice where the light comes into your room;listen carefully, see if there are new sounds you can recognize;feel
with your body and spirit, and see if you can sense the freshness in the air.Yes, yes, yes, it’s a new day, it’s a different day, and it’s a bright day!And most importantly, it is a new beginning for your life, a beginning where you are going to make new desicisions, take new actions, make new friends, and take your life to a totally unprecedented level! You know all this is real as long as you are
confident, passionate and committed! And you are confident, you are passionate, you are committed!
You will no longer fear making new sounds, showing new facial expressions, using your body in new ways, approaching new people, and asking new questions. You will live every single day of your life with absolute passion, and you will show your passion through the words you speak and the actions you take. You will focus all your time and effort on the most important goals of your life. You will never succumb to challenges of hardships. You will never waver in your pursuit of excellence. After all,you are the best, and you deserve the best!
As your coach and friend, I can assure you the door to all the best things in the world will open to you, but the key to that door is in your hand. You must do your part, you must faithfully follow the plans you make and take the actions you plan, you must never quit, you must never fear.I know you must do it, you can do it, you will do it, and you will succeed!
Now stand firm and tall, make a fist, get excited, and yell it out: I must do it!I can do it!I will do it!I will succeed!I must do it!I can do it!I will do it!I will succeed!I must do it!I can do it!I will do it!I will succeed!
How to balance study and part-time job?
How should you prepare for a job interview?
The impact of economic development on the environment. How to get along with people from different cultures?
The effect of TV advertising. The role of the Internet for college students. The effect of TV advertising
Today we cannot avoid see advertising everywhere.Marketing studies show an average person sees between 400 and 600 ads per day. These ads are targeted towards different groups and promote everything from baby food to luxury cars. For customers, advertising play an important role in making them aware of the worth of the product or service. It also helps consumers know how effective and valuable a product or service is to them.Besides, advertising is the most exciting, colourful and clever method of communication. The way information is presented can not only be memorable but also be thought-provoking and raise the standard of consumers’ aesthetic tastes. In that way, consumers won’t mind seeing a well produced ad many times.Apart from commercial ads, public service advertisement plays an important role in our society. It addresses or promotes a matter of social concern, like public health, animal rights and environmental protection. These ads contribute a lot to the overall progress of our society. However, ads can have a negative effect on consumers. It often happens that while you are watching a wonderful film on TV, endless ads interrupt you from time to time and make you rather annoyed.Besides, ads try to make people remember their brands and build brand loyalty. Most people who are loyal to one brand generally do not switch to other brands very easily. Also, children are most affected by ads because they lack consumer knowledge and judgement. As a result, they will try to persuade their parents to buy things like junk food even though they have no nutritional values. There is no doubt that ads can carry very powerful messages and images. Therefore every advertiser must take a greater social responsibility and not just push for more profits. Also, governments will have to look seriously into this matter.Consumers need to concentrate more on the products than on the ads.1.2.3.4.How to balance study and part-time job? It can be so hard to balance school and a part-time job! These days, with everyone's finances stretched, many students need to have a job.But it's essential to find a balance that lets you do your best at school and at work.First, decide if you really need to work during the school year ― or on school nights. If the money you earn is essential to help your family or save for college, let your supervisor know your situation and the work schedule you're currently keeping.Talk to your employer, too.Talking to Teachers. When it's time to talk, be direct and honest about your situation.Take responsibility.Explain what's holding you back, such as, “I know I need to put more time into schoolwork, but I have a part-time job and on the nights I work, I don't get off until 11 p.m.That leaves me no time for homework or studying.I need the job, but I also want to do well in school.” Your teachers might be able to give you extra time on project deadlines, provide study help, talk over strategies for prioritizing and managing schoolwork, or offer other suggestions to help you keep up.Talking to Your Boss.Talk to your manager about ways you can shift your schedule or cut back on hours so that you can get your schoolwork done.Explain your situation directly, calmly, and honestly. For example, “I need to talk to you about my hours and schedule.I like my job and I need the money, but I'm having trouble getting my schoolwork done on nights that I work until 11 p.m.” Then ask for what you'd like. For instance, “Can you change my schedule so I can get off earlier on school nights? Or give me fewer shifts on school nights?” If an unpredictable schedule is part of the problem, ask, “Can you give me the same schedule each week so I can plan my schoolwork better?” When you talk to teachers and employers, be sure to say thanks for their time and ideas.Hopefully, they will understand your situation better, realize how hard you're working, and find a way to help.Even though you're busy, be sure to leave a little time in your week to relax, do things you enjoy, and be with friends. These leisure activities help you refresh yourself so you can be at your best for both school and work responsibilities.1.2.3.4.How to prepare for a job interview
My topic is that How to prepare for a job interview? There is no doubt that every applicant will hope to be successful in the job interview. We must demonstrate certain personal qualities;we must create a good image in the limited time;we must let the interviewer remember us.Therefore, in order to defeat other applicants in a job Interview, we must prepare sufficiently.1.We should, firstly, make research about the company and the job ahead of time.Collect information about the company. For example, its motto, spirit and management, the position the company offers and its requirements. These information will help us get familiar with the company, and we really want to work for them!
2.Secondly, practice interviewing by having a friend or family member run through typical questions with you.And also come up with questions of your own, because
you will be asked if you have any at the end of the interview.Question can give the interviewer a signal that you are truly interested in the job.3.Thirdly, it's important to always have one good suit to wear.Take care to be dressed modestly and professionally.Try everything on ahead of time so you don't have any last minute fashion disasters. In addition, we’d better pay attention to the details-your hair, nails, shoes, should all look polished and professional.4.Appear fresh and well rested, interested and alert.Do remember to arrive on time for our appointment.Bring with us the original certificates and etc.5.Stay calm and know that you're ready to do your best. You've spent time practicing and preparing, so you’ll be ready to interview effectively. How to Build Friendships with People from Different Cultures
We come across people of different cultures in our workplace, neighborhoods, at school, church, at special events or even at our friends. Here are some suggestions in making friends with people from different countries and different culture.Be friendly and active.Express a genuine concern and care for the individuals and express a willingness to learn various things about their culture, such as any special greetings, their language, their traditions, religion, role of men and women in the family, education and foods, even tell them that you would love to try some of their foods. You will provide an atmosphere to make them feel welcome and open. However, do not ask too many questions all at the same time.Be patient. If you have difficulties understanding someone from a different culture or if they have problems understanding you, be patient with them.Say what you need to say slowly, repeat your message if you have to, until they fully understand what you are trying to communicate.Respect every culture.Understand and expect there will be differences with certain issues and the way they do things, they will carry different opinions and perspective based on their culture.Respect their differences and be at peace with them.Being proud of your culture is a great thing to live. But unnecessary pride can make you not interested in other people and not bring smile for each person. Therefore, getting along with people from different cultures are not so difficult if you accept other cultures, respect other cultures and swallow your pride a little bit.1.2.3.The impact of economic development on the environment. Our natural environment includes all living and non-living things like land, forests, minerals, water bodies, the atmosphere, etc. While some of these resources may be renewable others get ultimately exhausted with their continuous use.Even the renewable resources may get polluted.1.Economic development would involve greater consumption of resources such as land, forest, fuels etc, whose supply is essentially limited. Thus reckless and thoughtless use of these resources would cause their exhaustion and degradation, thereby reduce productivity and hinder economic growth. Also due to such consumption and
degradation our future generations will not get enough resources for their use.So environmental degradation not only affects us but will also have harmful effects on our future generations.2.Some argue that these environmental problems will be addressed more or less automatically in the process of economic growth. However the national income or the GNP(Gross National Product)which is the commonly accepted measure of economic development of a nation fails to reflect the true cost of development. In another word, it excludes the cost of consumption of natural resources and other environmental costs. For example when we cut down trees for commercial use, its value is added to the GNP but the loss in the form of natural resources is not accounted for anywhere. So the fact is that the more output we produce today by using greater amount of natural resources, the greater is the loss of our natural resources and consequently lower will be the output that the future generations will be able to produce.3.All economic activities either affect or are affected by the natural environment.Sustainable development therefore attempts to strike a balance between the demands of economic development and the need for protection of our natural environment. It is basically concerned with economic development in an environmentally responsible manner, keeping in mind the needs of the future generations.4.Environmental considerations and pollution control are a part of sustainable development and hence they are needed to be fully integrated in our economic policies. For this we must make efficient use of natural resources, use non renewable resources economically while continuously trying to develop and use renewable resources. It may also be remembered that sustainable development requires strong international commitment and cooperation because ecology and environment are beyond national boundaries. The role of the Internet for college students. The Internet has had a profound impact on education. They have streamlined the way students learn and provided access to huge amounts of information that were not as easily accessible before.Despite the benefits that technology and the Internet now confer upon students all over the world, they do have their shortcomings, too.It is important to understand that technology should act as a complement to traditional modes of learning and not simply a replacement.1.Access to Information. The Internet exponentially expand the average student's
access to information.Students can now access on Google or baidu, for instance, much of the information that was previously published in only one or a few sources.Furthermore, before the Internet, students primarily had to do research at libraries. Now, however, students can access pertinent information from anywhere there is an Internet connection.2.Social Networking Websites.Although the cell phone can have a similar purpose, social networking websites provide students with a means of instant contact with their friends. These websites also provide a means of advertising upcoming events and inviting friends to these events. These websites are also sometimes
used as a means of finding people with similar interests or as a method of making available personal information such as other contact details or personality profiles. The most famous of these websites are Facebook and renren.Besides, emails are also used by teachers for contacting their students with assignments, and it can be used by students if they wish to ask their teachers questions. For these reasons, many colleges give each student a personalized college e-mail address, meaning that college students are expected to be obtainable at almost any time. Finally, college students, similarly to all job applicants, sometimes must use email to apply for internships and jobs.3.Online Courses.Technology and the Internet have allowed many students to take
courses or supplemental courses online.Online courses generally do not require a student to be present at a specific location at a specific time. The effectiveness of online courses is debatable;however, there is no doubt that online courses are a viable alternative for many students.Online courses do alter the traditional dynamic between teacher and student, but the technology to send and receive information allows for a constant, open dialogue between teacher and student.4.Negative Effects. Some argue that the Internet have negative effects, too.It is
much easier to publish something on the Internet than it is to publish a book. The information that students find on the Internet, many educators believe, is suspicious and often unreliable.Furthermore, because the Internet make learning easier, students may not be developing important values such as hard work, the will to learn, and the ability to grapple with problems because technology and the Internet can just give them the answers.Plagiarism, copy and paste.

THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE 英語(yǔ)語(yǔ)言
Mr.Chairman, adjudicators, ladies and gentlemen,Good afternoon.

扒лd難逢”用英語(yǔ)我們說(shuō)“once in a blue moon”。在意大利語(yǔ)中則成了“every death of a pope”。愛(ài)爾蘭人不喜歡把“死亡”說(shuō)成 “drop dead”,而用 “you should lie in the earth”表達(dá)得更委婉。如果你想用西班牙語(yǔ)指責(zé)某人“放空頭支票”,那么最好是用 “go fry asparagus”,而不是相對(duì)較直白地說(shuō) “go fly a kite”。
有意思的是,簡(jiǎn)單的十個(gè)詞,如 “a”, “and”, “have” 和“the”,組合起來(lái)就是能形成現(xiàn)代交際中所用的詞匯的四分之一。
