3.X-Sports

Rick Stevenson, 16 years old, spends every minute he can on the mountain. He and his friends go snow-boarding every weekend.“It's incredible,” he says.“The winds are so strong, the boards go 50 miles an hour.” His friend Laura Fields agrees.“No one goes skiing anymore,” she says.“That’s for the old folks.”

Rick and Laura are part of a new trend in sports. It has its own language, words such as “rage,” “juice,” and “energy.” It has its own clothing, such as skin-tight bicycle suits in rainbow colors or baggy tops and pants. And it’s not for the old or the easily frightened. Its philosophy is to get as close to the edge as possible. And more and more young athletes are taking part in these risky, daredevil activities called “extreme sports,” or “X-sports.”In the past, young athletes would play hockey or baseball.Today, they want risk and

excitement—the closer to the edge the better. They snowboard over cliffs and mountain-bike down steep mountains. They wind-surf near hurricanes, go white-water rafting through rapids, and bungy-jump from towers.Extreme sports started as an alternative to more expensive sports.A city kid who didn’t have the money to buy expensive sports equipment could get a

skateboard and have fun.But now it has become a whole new area of sports, with specialized equipment and high levels of skill. There’s even a special Olympics for extreme sports, called the Winter X-Games, which includes snow mountain biking and ice climbing. An Extreme Games competition is held each summer in Rhode Island. It features sports such as sky surfing, where people jump from airplanes with surfboards attached to their feet. What makes extreme sports so popular?

“People love the thrill,” says Murray Nussbaum, who sells sports equipment."City people want to be outdoors on the weekend and do something challenging. The new equipment is so much better that people can take more risks without getting hurt.” An athlete adds, “Sure there’s a risk, but that’s part of the appeal.Once you go mountain biking or snowboarding, it’s impossible to go back to bike riding or skiing. It’s just too boring.”

Extreme sports are certainly not for everyone. Most people still prefer to play baseball or basketball or watch sports on TV.But extreme sports are definitely gaining in popularity.“These sports are fresh and exciting. It’s the wave of the future. The potential is huge,” says Nussbaum.

Best Way to Know a Strange City

I was in a strange city and I didn't know the city at all. What is more, I could not speak a word of the language. After having spent my first day in the duanwenw.com center, I decided to lose my way on the second day, since I believed that this was the nearest way of getting to know the strange city.

I got on first bus that passed, rode on it for several stops. Then got off it and walked on.The first two hours passed pleasantly enough. Then I decided to turn back to my hotel for lunch. After walking about for some time, I decided I had better ask the way.The trouble was that the only word I know of the language was the name of the street in which I lived and even that I pronounced badly.

I stopped to ask a friendly-looking newspaper-seller.He smiled and handed me a paper.I shook my head and repeated the name of the street and he put the paper into my hands.I gave him some money and went on my way.The next person I asked was a policeman. The policeman listened to me carefully, smiled and gently took me by the arm. There was a strange look in his eyes as he pointed left and right and duanwenw.com left again.I nodded politely and began walking in the point.

About an hour passed and I noticed that the houses were getting fewer And green fields were appearing in either side of me.I had come all the way into countryside. The only thing left for me to do was to find the nearest railway station.

The photo album worn and old is sitting on the pile. She flips the cover open just to reminisce awhile. On the first page there she is, a baby in her lap, her son when he was one year old;she smiles as she thinks back. That was taken in the park where she took him to play.Funny how it sometimes seems like only yesterday. But other times it seems those days are distant memories. And all we have reminding us are pictures such as these.

She sees a picture of him with his second birthday cake, duanwenw.com and smiles as she remembers of the face that he would make. When trying to blow out the candles he would have a fit.He tried so hard to blow them out but they would all stay lit.So Mom came to the rescue with a waving of her hand. The same time that he blew on it she waved a little fan.She smiles as she thinks back at all the things when he first tried, when she would lend a helping hand and then just step aside.

She sees a picture of him standing holding his first bike, and smiles when thinking how he said, “It’s harder than a trick.’’ But she would run behind him holding on while he would ride, until he got his balance and then she would step aside.
