There was a young man walking down a deserted beach just before dawn.In the distance he saw a frail old man.As he approached the old man, he saw him picking up stranded starfish and throwing them back into the sea.The young man gazed in wonder as the old man again and again threw the small starfish from the sand to the water.He asked, ”Old man, why do you spend so much energy doing what seems to be a waste of time?“ The old man explained that the stranded starfish would die if left in the morning sun.” But there must be thousands of beached and millions of starfish!“ exclaimed the young man.”How can you make any difference?“ The old man looked down at the small starfish in his hand and as he threw it into the safety of the sea, he said, ”I made a difference to this one.“ 有一個男人沿著茺涼的海灘欣賞日落時，望見遠遠的海岸邊有一個老人。當那男人靠近時，他才知道那老人是把海水沖刷上岸的海星，一次一個的逐一丟回水中。那男人感到十分疑惑，于是走到那個老人身邊問他：「你好!請問你在做什么呢?」那老人回答：「我把這些海星丟回海里。你看，現在已經退潮了。如果我不把它們丟回海里，它們就會缺氧而死在這里。」那男人當然能了解這種情形，但是他仍舊感到疑問：「但是海灘上有成千上萬的海星，而你不可能把它們全丟回海里啊!它們有如天上繁星，更何況在這么長的海岸線，這樣的情形很多，你這樣做并不能改變什么的。」那老人，仍是彎下腰再度拾起另一只海星。當他把海星丟進海中的時候，說：「這只海星的命運改變了」。有時候我們會覺得一己之力實在太小了，在整個大環境里或許是沒有改變，但或許這個小改變卻改變了小環境的整個生命。
