食物的消化是從口腔開始的,食物在口腔內以機械性消化(食物被磨碎)為主,因為食物在口腔內停留時間很短,故口腔內的消化作用不大。

食物從食道進入胃后,即受到胃壁肌肉的機械性消化和胃液的化學性消化作用,此時,食物中的蛋白質被胃液中的胃蛋白酶(在胃酸參與下)初步分解,胃內容物變成粥樣的食糜狀態,小量地多次通過幽門向十二指腸推送。食糜由胃進入十二指腸后,開始了小腸內的消化。

小腸是消化、吸收的主要場所。食物在小腸內受到胰液、膽汁和小腸液的化學性消化以及小腸的機械性消化,各種營養成分逐漸被分解為簡單的可吸收的小分子物質在小腸內吸收。因此,食物通過小腸后,消化過程已基本完成,只留下難于消化的食物殘渣,從小腸進入大腸。

大腸內無消化作用,僅具一定的吸收功能。
