Two stylistic periods: Modernism and Postmodernism

2)Postmodernism—generally refers to literature after the WWII.It’s characterized by a high degree of experimentation.George Orwell’s 1984 begins “Postmodernism” in English literature.The horrors of the Second World War weakened ideas of human progress, and of meaning in life.One of the characteristics of Postmodernism is to give up the search for meaning in life.In the Postmodernist novel The French Lieutenant’s Woman by John Fowles, the reader is offered a choice of endings.后現代主義一般指二戰以后60至70年代出現的文學新流派。特點是試驗性極強。喬治·奧威爾于1948年寫的1984開啟了英國文學的后現代主義的先河。

You will marry the general right? Jasmine:I suppose so father.What else can I do? Sultan: Wonderful!A wise decision.There is nothing to cry about.You will have a magnificent ceremony, and we shall have a parade in the streets? a band? music? delicious foods?and?(Aladdin interrupts him)Aladdin:Excuse me Mr.Sultan, sir? Peddler:(Enters)Aladdin and the Genie went into the village later that night, and what did they see? a dragon, with long sharp teeth and evil green eyes.(We hear the roar of a dragon.The peddler jumps)Oh my god!

Oh excuse me? now where was I? Ah yes.The dragon was breathing fire and had a thick cloud of smoke coming from his nose.Aladdin and his magic Genie fought with that dragon.And whom do you think won?(Waits for audience response)

Hmm? well just watch and see.SCENE 5 Sultan:(Looking at his watch)Well, it seems as if Mr.Aladdin has disappeared.I guess that he must the end of your foolish friend.Probably dead?(Just then Aladdin enters)Aladdin:(He is carrying the head of a dragon)Father!I have passed your test sir.The dragon is dead.Sultan: You amaze me Aladdin.You killed the dragon.I underestimated you.You shall marry my daughter.Jasmine:Oh thank you father!(She runs to embrace him)Sultan: Come.We shall plan the wedding feast!My son!Aladdin:(Bows)Father.(Sultan exits)Oh I almost forgot.I have a present for you.(Aladdin pulls out the lamp.)Jasmine:It’s beautiful, but it’s much too valuable.Aladdin:A wedding present.(Jasmine takes the lamp and gives Aladdin a kiss.)

旁白: Many years ago lived an emperor.He thought so much of new clothes that he spent all his money in order to obtain them;his only ambition was to be always well dressed.the only thing, in fact, he thought anything of was to drive out and show a new suit of clothes.He had a coat for every hour of the day.很久以前有一個皇帝，他非常注重新衣服，因此他把他所有的錢都花在衣服上，他唯一的愿望就是每時每刻都能穿得很漂亮。實際上，他想的都是出去炫耀他的新衣服。他每天每個鐘頭都要換一套新的衣服。

One day, 有一天，The Emperor(to Soldiers): Are there any new things about clothes today?

皇帝（對士兵說）：今天有沒有有關新衣服的消息？

Soldier-A: Today two swindlers came to our city.They said they were the best weavers in the world.士兵A：今天有兩個人來到我們的城市，他們說他們是世界上最好的織工。

soldier-B: And they said they could produce the finest cloth, their were not only beautiful, but the clothes couldn’t be seen to any man who was unfit for his office or stupid.士兵B：他們還說他們能織出誰也想象不到的最美麗的布。這些布的顏色和款式不僅僅非常好看，他們說，而且它縫出來的衣服還有一個奇異的作用，那就是凡是不稱職的人或愚蠢的人都看不見這衣服。

The emperor(thought):“ The emperor(thought):”That must be wonderful cloth ,if I dresses a suit made of this cloth, I can find out which men is unfit for their places or stupid.I must ask them to weave for me right now.”

皇帝（想）：這一定是非常奇異的衣服，如果我能夠穿上這種布做成的衣服，我就能夠找出我的王國里哪些人是不稱職的，哪些人是聰明的，哪些人是愚蠢的。我要叫他們馬上織出這種布。因此

The emperor:(to soldier-A):Find they and ask they make cloth for me.皇帝（對士兵A說）：去叫他們給我織布。

soldier-A :yes, I go out and do this thing now.士兵A：是的，我立刻去。

The emperor:(to soldier-B): Set up two rooms for them.皇帝（對士兵B說）：準備兩間房子給他們。

soldier-B: yes, I do this thing now.士兵B：是的，我立刻去做。

旁白: two swindlers were asked to work in the two new rooms.They pretended to be very hard at work, but they did nothing whatever on the rooms.They asked for the finest silk and the most precious gold-cloth;all they got they did away with, and worked at the empty rooms till late at night.旁白：兩個騙子被叫到兩間新的房子里工作。他們假裝努力工作，實際上他們在房子里什么都沒有做。他們要求最好的絲綢和最貴的金線；他們把這些東西都裝進他們的腰包，卻假裝在那些空房間里工作到深夜。

Scene 2 〈地點:at the palace 人物：the Emperor，old minister and Courtier-A〉 Several days later: 幾天后：

The emperor(thought):”I should very much like to know how they are getting on with the cloth,“ But if I can not see it,I am a stupid man.I can’t do that.I must send somebody else first for see it.So，皇帝（想）：我很想知道他們的織布究竟織得怎樣了。但如果我看見見的話，那就說明我是愚蠢的人。我不能這樣做，我應該先派一個人去看看。因此，The emperor(to the old minister):you are honest and intelligent.So I want to know how about my new cloth.You go to the two new rooms and see about it.the old minister :yes, I do this thing now.皇帝（對一個老大臣說）：我要找個誠實和聰明的人去看看我的新布料，你去那兩間新房子看看。

Scene 3 〈地點:in the room 人物：old minister，swindler-A swindler-B〉

旁白:the old minister went to the two new rooms.這個老大臣去到那兩間新房子。

the old minister(thought): Heaven preserve us!I cannot see anything at all,”

這個老大臣（想）：我的天啊，我什么都看不見。

swindler-A :hello!Mr Minister, you can come near and see clearly.騙子A：你好，大臣先生，你可以走近點，看清楚一點。

swindler-B: oh.Mr Minister, Did you see these finest pattern and beautiful colours.How wonderful is it!

騙子B：啊，大臣先生，看見這些美麗的花紋和漂亮的顏色嗎？多么美啊！

旁白：The poor old minister tried his very best, but he could see nothing, for there was nothing to be seen.old minister thought, “Oh dear, can I be so stupid? I should never have thought so, and nobody must know it!Is it possible that I am not fit for my office? No, no, I cannot say that I was unable to see the cloth.”

這個可憐的大臣盡他最大的努力去看，可是他什么都看不到，以為那里根本就什么東西都沒有。

老大臣想：天啊，難道是我愚蠢的人？我從來都沒懷疑過自己，也不能讓任何人知道。難道是我不適合這個位置？不，不，我不可以說我沒有看到布的。

swindler-A :“Now, have you got nothing to say?”

騙子A：現在你有什么意見嗎？

旁白：while swindler-B pretended to be busily weaving.Old minister: “Oh, it is very pretty, exceedingly beautiful, What a beautiful pattern, what brilliant colors!I shall tell the emperor that I like the cloth very much.”

當騙子B假裝忙著編織，老大臣說：啊，多么美啊，美極了！多么漂亮的花紋啊，多么美麗的色彩啊！我會呈報皇帝我對于這布非常滿意。

swindler-A and swindler-B: “We are pleased to hear that,”

騙子A和騙子B：聽到你的話我們真高興。

旁白：swindlers described the cloth to him.The old minister listen carefully, so that he can relate to the emperor.Now the swindler asked for more money, silk and gold-colth.They kept everything for them selves, and pretended to working hard.騙子們向大臣描述這些布奇異的顏色和花紋，老大臣注意的聽著，以便回到皇帝那去，可以照樣背出來。事實上他也是這樣做的。現在這兩個騙子要求更多的錢，更多的絲和金子，他們說是為了織布的需要。他們把這些東西全裝進腰包里，連一根線也沒有放到織機上去。不過他們還是繼續在空空的機架上工作。

Scene 4 〈地點:at the palace 人物：the Emperor, Courtier-A〉 Several days later:

the Emperor: I always think you are more honest and more wise than the old minister.So you go and see how they were getting on, and if the cloth was nearly finished.Courtier-A: Thank you for you praise.I do this thing right now.皇帝：我一直都認為你比那個老大臣更誠實，更聰明，因此你去看看他們進行得怎樣，看看布是不是快編織好了。

官員A：謝謝你的夸張，我現在就去。

Scene 5〈地點:in the room 人物：Courtier-A，swindler-A swindler-B〉

旁白： Like the old minister, he looked and looked but could see nothing, as there was nothing to be seen.two swindlers :“Is it not a beautiful piece of cloth?”

象老大臣一樣，他看了又看，還是看不到一點東西，因為本來就沒有東西。

騙子們：這塊布漂亮嗎？

旁白：they are showing and explaining the magnificent pattern, which, however, did not exist.他們指著一些漂亮的花紋，并作了一些解釋，事實上什么都沒有。

Courtier-A(thought):“I am not stupid, It is there fore my good appointment for which I am not fit.It is very strange, but I must not let any one know it;”

官員A（想）：我并不愚蠢，這可能是我不適合擔當現在的官職，這真夠滑稽的，但是我不能讓其他人知道。

Courtier-A :“It is very excellent.”

官員A：這真是太美了。

two swindlers: thank you very much.you are a very clever man.And you can ask the king to see our product.”

兩個騙子：謝謝，你真是一位聰明的人，你可以回去請皇帝來看我們的杰作了。

Courtier-A: I will tell the king what you say.官員A：我會向皇帝皇帝你們的建議的。

旁白：swindlers described to him the colors and explained the curious pattern.The Courtier-A listened attentively, that he might relate to the emperor what they said;and so he did.Everybody in the whole town talked about the precious cloth.騙子們向他描述這些布奇異的顏色和花紋，官員A注意的聽著，以便回到皇帝那去，可以照樣背出來。事實上他也是這樣做的。

城市里所有的人都在談論這些奇異的布。

Scene 6〈地點:in the room 人物：the emperor，Courtier-A , Courtier-B, Courtier-C, swindler-A and swindler-B〉

旁白：At last the emperor wished to see it himself, while it was still on the room.最后，皇帝想親自去那間房子看看。

the emperor(thought): The emperor(thought):What is this? I don’t see anything at all..Am I stupid? Am I unfit to be emperor? How dreadful it is.皇帝（想）：什么？我什么都看不見，這真實荒唐。難道我愚蠢？還是我不適合當皇帝呢？這真是我從來沒有碰見的一件最可怕的事情。

the emperor :Really, your cloth has our most gracious approval;“

皇帝：啊，你們的布我非常贊賞。

旁白：All his attendants with him could see nothing at all.Courtier-A , Courtier-B and Courtier-C: ”It is very beautiful.“

Courtier-B: It is the most beautiful cloth what I have seen in my life.皇帝的隨從們盡管看了又看，可是他們誰都沒有看到任何東西。

Courtier-A: you can wear the new clothes at a great procession which was soon to take place.”

官員C：你可以穿著這塊布去將要舉行的游行大典。

the emperor(for two swindlers):I will appointed you“ Imperial Court weavers.”

皇帝（對兩個騙子說）：我將雇傭你們為御聘織師。

Scene 7〈地點:in the palace人物：the emperor，Courtier-A , Courtier-B, Courtier-C, swindler-A and swindler-B〉

旁白： The whole night before the procession, the swindlers pretended to work and burned more than sixteen candles.People should see that they were busy to finish the emperor's new suit.swindler-A and swindler-B: “The emperor's new suit is ready now.”

舉行游行大典的前一天晚上，兩個騙子假裝在工作，并且點起了16根以上的蠟燭。人們可以看出他們是在忙著趕制皇帝的新裝。他們假裝把布料從房子里拿出來，用大剪刀在空中裁剪，同時又用沒有穿線的針縫了一通。

騙子A和騙子B：皇帝的新裝弄好了。

旁白：the swindlers held their arms up as if they held something in their hands.騙子們把他們的手高高舉起，好象他們手里拿著什么東西。

swindler-A: “These are the trousers!”

騙子A：這是褲子。

swindler-B:“ This is the coat!”

騙子B：這是大衣。

swindler-A: “Here is the cloak!”

騙子A：這是斗篷。

swindler-B: “They are all as light as a cobweb, and one must feel as if one had nothing at all upon the body;but that is just the beauty of them.”

騙子B：他們輕得就象蜘蛛絲一樣，穿著他的人會覺得身上好象沒有什么東西似的，但這正是它們的妙處所在。

all the courtiers: “Indeed!”

所有的官員：是啊。

旁白：The emperor undressed, and the swindlers pretended to put the new suit upon him, one piece after another;and the emperor looked at himself in the glass from every side.皇帝脫下衣服，騙子們假裝為他穿上新的衣服，一件接著一件。皇帝在鏡子面前轉來轉去。

Courtier-A : How well they look!

官員A：這衣服真好看啊！

Courtier-B: How well they fit!

官員B：這衣服真合身啊。

Courtier-A: What a beautiful pattern!What fine colors!That is a magnificent suit of clothes!“

官員A：多好看的花紋啊！多么美的色彩啊！這真是一套華麗的衣服！

Scene 8〈地點:in the street人物：the emperor，Courtier-A , Courtier-B, Courtier-C, resident-A resident-B the father and a little child〉

旁白：The emperor marched in the procession under the beautiful Canopy.all who saw him in the street and out of the windows exclaimed.皇帝在那個富麗的華蓋下游行著，站在街上和窗戶的人都在驚叫著。

resident-A: ”Indeed, the emperor's new suit is incomparable!What a long train he has!How well it fits him!“

居民A：真的，皇帝的新裝真的無與倫比！他長袍多適合他啊！

resident-B: yes ,of course I saw it.it very wonderful.”

居民B：是啊，我當然看見，這真是奇妙啊。

旁白： Nobody wished to let others know he saw nothing, for then he would have been unfit for his office or too stupid.Never emperor's clothes were more admired.沒有人想讓別人知道他什么都看不見，因為這樣他會暴露自己的不稱職，或者是太愚蠢。皇帝所有的衣服從來沒有得到這樣普遍的稱贊

a little child :”But he has nothing on at all,“

一個小孩子：可是他什么都沒有穿啊。

the father, :”Good heavens!listen to the voice of an innocent child,“

他的爸爸：上帝啊，你聽聽這小孩子純真的聲音。

旁白：and one whispered to the other what the child had said.同時大家把這小孩子講的話私自低聲的傳播開來。

resident-A :”But he has nothing on at all,“

居民A：他并沒有穿什么衣服。

resident-B: But he has nothing on at all,”

居民B：他并沒有穿什么衣服。

旁白：At last all the people cried.The emperor thought that they may be right, but he must finish the parade

后來所有的人都在大叫。這使皇帝受到很大的影響，因為他也覺得老百姓說的話是對的。不過他對自己說：現在我必須把這個游行大典舉行完畢。

旁白：And the chamberlains walked with still greater dignity, as if they carried the train which did not exist.他的內臣們跟在他后面走，手中托著一個并不存在的后袍。

(一陣輕快的音樂由遠而近，Little Red Riding Hood挎著籃子蹦跳跳地跳到花草旁)Little Red Riding Hood： Wow！Flowers, how beautiful!（放下籃子采花）One flower ,two flowers, three flowers.Wolf：（隨著一陣低沉的音樂，Wolf大步地走上臺）I am wolf.I am hungry.(做找東西狀,東張西望)Here is a little red riding hood.Hi!Little Red Riding Hood.Where are you going?(做狡猾的樣子和Little Red Riding Hood打招呼)Little Red Riding Hood：(手摸辮子，天真地回答)To Grandma’s．Grandma is ill.Wolf：（自言自語）I' ll eat Grandma.But??（對Little Red Riding Hood說）Hey, look!6 little baby ducks.Little Red Riding Hood：(和6只鴨子隨著音樂翩翩起舞)Wolf：（悄悄地藏到大樹后）

Wolf：（從樹后出來，邊走邊說）I am very hungry now.(做找尋的樣子)Where is Grandma’ s house?(高興地對觀眾說)Aha , it’s here.(敲門)Bang, Bang, Bang． Grandma： Who is it？

Wolf：（裝出Little Red Riding Hood的聲音，一邊得意地搖動尾巴，一邊說）It’s me.Little Red Riding Hood.Grandma：(邊說邊起床)Come in, come in.Wolf：(得意洋洋地走到床邊)Grandma , I’ll eat you.Grandma：（驚慌失措地抓緊衣服，瞪著眼睛，邊叫迫從床上滾到地上）灰狼把外婆吞到了肚子里。

Wolf：（得意地拍拍肚子，翹起大拇指）Yummy！I’ll sleep.Little Red Riding Hood：(高興地敲門)Grandma．Grandma． Wolf：(裝扮成Grandma的聲音)Who is it？

Look!A door．(推門)The wolf is sleeping.Wolf：(發出呼呼的響聲)Hunter：(端起槍想打，又放下)What a big stomach!(摸摸Wolf的肚子)Grandma and Little Red Riding Hood are inside.I must be hurry．(從桌子上拿起剪刀，舉起)Look!Scissors.(做剪Wolf的肚子)Cut, cut, cut.Little Red Riding Hood/Grandma：Thank you．

Hunter： Grandma ,give me some needles and thread．

Little Riding Hood ,Give me some stones． Grandma：(從桌子上拿來針線)Little Red Riding Hood：(搬來幾個石頭)One, two, three.Hunter：(把小石頭裝進Wolf的衣服里)Grandma： I'll thread it.hunter：(拿起槍)Woke up!Wolf：(起床，兩手托著大肚子)My stomach is so heavy.Hunter： You big bad wolf, raise your arms!Wolf：(邊跑邊說)Help!Don’t shot me!Hunter：（開槍）Bang, bang!Wolf：(應聲倒下)Hunter： The bad wolf is dead．
