just defeated him for the presidency, Partisan feeling must yield to patriotism.I'm withyou, Mr.President, and God bless you.Well, in that same spirit, I say to President-elect Bush that what remains of partisanrancor must now be put aside, and may God bless his stewardship of this country.Neither he nor I anticipated this long and difficult road.Certainly neither of us wantedit to happen.Yet it came, and now it has ended, resolved, as it must be resolved, through the

honored institutions of our democracy.Over the library of one of our great law schools is inscribed the motto, Not under manbut under God and law.That's the ruling principle of American freedom, the source of our

democratic liberties.I've tried to make it my guide throughout this contest as it has guided

對于那些一直支持我和我們的競選的人們,我表示由衷的感謝。尤其要感謝我的夫人和利伯曼,感謝他們為我們的競選不斷注入活力和希望,不僅僅為了競選,更是為了我們整個國家。

事實上,歷史上有很多類似的激烈的競爭,它們也都在經歷了一段時間的爭論后得到最后的解決,而且每一次不管是勝方還是敗方,都平靜地接受最后的結果。讓和解精神永遠和我們在一起。

我知道,我的很多支持者會感到很失望,我本人也很失望,但是我們熱愛祖國的感情必定會克服這種失望。

同樣,我也要向國際社會上我們的伙伴們說,不要把這場競爭看做是美國脆弱的象征。美國民主的力量已經在它克服困難的過程中極為清楚的顯現出來了。

有些人或許會擔心這次競選極不尋常的性質將會妨礙狹義的總統履行職責,我認為這種擔心是沒有必要的。

本屆當選總統布什,接手了這樣一個國家:在他履行重大責任時,這個國家的公民將愿意給予協助。

我個人將聽從他的指令。我號召所有的美國人,特別是要力勸那些站在我方陣營的人們,聯合起來,站在當選的下屆總統身后。這就是美國,正像當兩方勢均力敵達到頂點的時候,我們猛烈地交戰,而當競賽結束以后,我們又靠近雙方的陣營走到一起來一樣。

我們將有充足的時間爭論我們持續存在的不足,然而,在現在這個時刻,我們應該承認,把我們聯合到一起的共同之處要比那些將我們分開的東西強大得多。雖然我們仍將緊握而不會放棄我們對立的信仰,但除了對政黨的忠誠之外,我們還有更大的責任。這就是美國,國家將被我們置于政黨之前來考慮。我們將一起站在我們的新總統身后。

晚上好:

我剛跟喬治〃W〃布什談過話,祝賀他成為合眾國第43位總統;我向他保證,這回絕不會再打電話給他追回原話了。

我提議盡快和他會面,盡快消除過去的競選運動和官司所帶來的分歧。

差不多一個半世紀前,參議員道格拉斯對總統選舉擊敗自己的林肯說:“黨派的門戶之見必須讓路給愛國主義。我支持你,總統先生,愿主保佑你。”

那么,在這樣的精神下,我對候任總統布什說,我們一定要將黨派之爭結下的仇恨拋諸腦后,愿主保佑他好好管治這個國家。

“這條路是那么崎嶇漫長”

他和我誰都料想不到這條路是那么崎嶇漫長。當然,我們誰也不希望這些事會發生。不過,事情到底來了,現在結束了,而且果然通過我們民主政體的機制解決了。

我國一所法律學院的圖書館上鐫刻著這樣的一句格言:“聽命于法與主,而非聽命于人”。這是美國自由的核心原則,也是民主自由之濫觴。在投票日之后的五個星期里,我以此為鑒,這也是美國獨立以來所有復雜事件的引鑒。

現在,美國最高法院終于做出了決定。讓我說得清楚一點,在我極為不同意的同時,我接受了最高法院的決定。我接受了最終的結果,下星期一,這個結果會在選舉人團會議上得到確認。今天晚上,為了國人的團結和美國民主,我認輸了。

我也負起責任,無條件支持新的候任總統,盡我所能幫助他團結美國人民,實現我國《獨立宣言》中所標舉的廣袤視野,實現憲法中允諾和保障的一切。

讓我向那些支持我和支持我們所捍衛的理念的人衷心致謝。蒂佩爾和我對利伯曼夫婦感悟中,他們為我倆的伙伴關系帶來懇切的熱誠和崇高的心志,不僅為競選活動開辟了新徑,也為我國開辟了新徑。

這次大選的確是非比尋常的一次大選。不過,在天意難料的崎嶇路途上,幾經蹉跎,竟然把我們帶到一個嶄新的境地。正是由于選舉結果如此接近,反而提醒了我們原來大家同是一個族群,有著一樣的歷史、一樣的命運。

“我們把國家放在政黨之上”

是的,那段歷史給了我們許多成敗浮沉的前車之鑒,在面對公眾意愿的兩難之下展開激烈的辯論、無情的抗爭。

有些爭論在纏訟幾個星期后才得以解決。每一次,勝方和被征服的一方都心平氣和地接受結局,帶著重歸于好精神接受結果。

因此,就讓這種精神永遠和我們一起吧。

我知道很多支持我的人都很失望。我也失望。但失望必須讓給我們對國家的熱愛。我也對世界各國說,不要把這次爭論看成是美國趨弱的癥狀。通過克服這一連串困難,畢竟彰顯了美國民主的力量。

也有人擔心,這次選舉凸顯的反常狀況,勢必影響新一任總統的施政舉措。我不相信那是勢所必然。

候任總統布什要管治的美國,是一個國民都愿意在他肩負的重任上幫一把的國家。我個人隨時候命,也呼吁所有美國人,尤其是那些曾經站在我這一邊的人,團結在新總統的領導下。這就是美國。愈是危急關頭,我們的斗志愈高昂;輸贏一定,我們捐棄嫌隙,攜手合作。

要辯論我們之間的歧異,那是來日方長了。現在要認清的是團結我們的力量比拆散我們的力量更大。

我們對本黨的信念雖然不離不棄,眼前到底還有比黨務更高遠的責任要負起。這就是美國,我們把國家放在政黨之上。我們會團結支持新總統。

我接著會做什么,我還不知道。像你們一樣,我希望和家人及老朋友度假。我也會在家鄉田納西州修補一下籬笆——真實和象征的籬笆。

失利跟勝利一樣

有人問我曾否遺憾,是的,我有一樁憾事:我沒有機會在未來4年為國人打拼,尤其是亟欲拋開負擔、排除困難的一群;尤其是感到沒有人聽到他們的聲音的一群。我聽到了你們的呼聲,我永不會忘記。

我看到了大選中的美國,我很喜歡看到的那一切。那是值得一拼的,我不會罷休。

至于今晚偃旗息鼓的一役,我堅信父親說過的一句話:不論敗得多慘,失利跟勝利一樣,滌蕩心靈,光耀千秋。

因此,對我而言,大選的結束和開始時一樣:照樣擁有妻子家人的愛;擁有對主的信念;擁有對這個我為它出征越南一直到做副總統的國家;擁有努力奔走的競選義工和工作人員,包括36天來在佛羅里達州奮力工作的人們。

如今,政治上的斗爭已成過去,我們轉過頭去為了美國人民的幸福而奮斗不懈,為全世界追求自由而對我們有所企望的人們而奮斗不懈。

Good evening.Just moments ago i spoke with george.w.bush and congratulated him on becoming the 43rd president of the united states and i promised him that i wouldn't call him back this time.i offered to meet with him as soon as possible so that we can start to heal the divisons of the campaign and the contest through which we just passed.almost a century and a half ago senator stephen douglas told abraham lincoln who had just defeated him for the presidency “partisan feeling must yield to patriotism i’m with you mr.president and god bless you.”

well in that same spirit i say to president-elect bush that what remains of partisan rancor must now be put aside and may god bless his stewardship of this country.neither he nor i anticipated this long and difficult road.Certainly neither of us wanted it to happen.Yet it came and now it has ended resolved as it must be resolved through the honored institutions of our democracy.over the library of one of our great law schools is inscribed the motto “not under man but under god and law.”that’s the ruling principle of american freedom the source of our democratic liberties.I’ve tried to make it my guide throughout this contest as it has guided america’s deliberations of all the complex issues of the past five weeks.now the u.s supreme court has spoken.Let there be no doubt while i strongly disagree with the court's decision i accept it.I accept the finality of this outcome which will be ratified next monday in the electoral college and tonight for the sake of our unity as a people and the strength of our democracy i offer my concession.i also accept my responsibility which i will discharge unconditionally to honor the new president-elect and do everything possible to help him bring americans together in fulfillment of the great vision that our declaration of independence defines and that our constitution affirms and defends.let me say how grateful i am to all those who supported me and supported the cause for which we have fought.tipper and i feel a deep gratitude to joe and hadassah lieberman who brought passion and high purpose to our partnership and opened new doors not just for our campaign but for our country.this has been an extraordinary election.But in one of god’s unforeseen paths this belatedly broken impasse can point us all to a new vietnam to the vice presidencyand with gratitude to our truly tireless campaign staff and volunteers including all those who worked so hard in florida for the last 36 days.now the political struggle
