中國農村學子首登哈佛畢業演講

這位來自湖南農村的小伙何江是哈佛大學歷史上第一位享此殊榮的中國大陸學生。他從全校數萬名畢業生選拔中脫穎而出，在演講中講述了一個自己中學時代被毒蜘蛛咬傷的故事，進而推及到自己在哈佛大學所切身體會到的現金科技知識。他說：“作為一名科學家，積極地將我們所學會的知識傳遞給那些急需這些知識的人是多么的重要。”

美國東部時間2016年5月26日是哈佛的第365個畢業日，在這次的畢業典禮上，來自中國湖南的生物系博士生畢業生何江作為代表做了畢業典禮演講。每年哈佛畢業典禮都會有三位學生做演講，而今年，著名導演史蒂芬·斯皮爾伯格作為今年的特邀嘉賓登臺演講。

何江是中國大陸首位登上該演講臺的學生。作為一名從湖南農村長大的生物學博士生，何江用他的親身經歷——被蜘蛛咬傷的往事講起，說明知識傳播、知識分布資源平衡的重要性。在演講過程中，他面帶微笑、鎮定自若，向世界展示了中國學子的風采。

When I was in middle school, a poisonous spider bit my right hand.I ran to my mom for help—but instead of taking me to a doctor, my mom set my hand on fire.After wrapping my hand with several layers of cotton, then soaking it in wine, she put a chopstick into my mouth,and ignited the cotton.在我上中學的時候，一只有毒蜘蛛咬傷了我的右手，我去找母親幫忙，但是她沒有找醫生，卻把我的手放在火上面。她用酒浸過的棉紗繞著我的手纏了好幾層之后，在我的嘴里放了一根筷子，然后點燃了棉紗。

Heat quickly penetrated the cotton and began to roast my hand.The searing pain made me want to scream, but the chopstick prevented it.All I could do was watch my hand burnone minute, then two minutes –until mom put out the fire.棉紗上的溫度很快上來了，我的手也開始發燙。這股灼痛讓我想要大叫，不過我嘴里含著的筷子讓我叫不出來。我唯一能做的就是看著我的手骨，一分鐘過去了，兩分鐘過去了，直到母親熄滅火。

You see, the part of China I grew up in was a rural village, and at that time pre-industrial.When I was born, my village had no cars, no telephones, no electricity, not even running water.And we certainly didn’t have access to modern medical resources.所以你看到，我是在中國的一個小山村里成長的，在那個時候，并不發達。在我出生的那個年代，我們村沒車、沒電話、也沒電，甚至都沒有自來水！且理所當然地，我沒有接觸現代醫療資源的辦法。

There was no doctor my mother could bring me to see about my spider bite.For those who study biology, you may have grasped the science behind my mom’s cure: heat deactivates proteins, and a spider’s venom is simply a form of protein.It’s cool how that folk remedy actually incorporates basic biochemistry, isn’t it?

當我被蜘蛛咬傷時，并沒有醫生可以來治療我。對于學生物學的人來說，你也許能找到我母親治愈背后所包含的科學原理：熱量能夠讓蛋白質失活，而蜘蛛的毒液都是蛋白質組成的。將這個土方子和生物化學基礎聯系起來很神奇，不是嗎？

But I am a PhD student in biochemistry at Harvard, I now know that better, less painful and less risky treatments existed.So I can’t help but ask myself, why I didn’t receive one at the time? 不過我現在是一個在哈佛學習生物化學的博士生，我現在知道了一個更好的、不那么痛、危險系數更小的治療方法。所以，我忍不住問我自己，為什么那個時候我不能接受更好的治療嗎？

Fifteen years have passed since that incident.I am happy to report that my hand is fine.But this question lingers, and I continue to be troubled by the unequal distribution of scientific knowledge throughout the world.距離那個事故發生已經十五年了，我很高興地告訴你們：我的手現在恢復地很好。不過這個問題在我心里縈繞了很久，我也時常會被科學知識分布的不均衡問題所困擾。

We have learned to edit the human genome and unlock many secrets of how cancer progresses.We can manipulate neuronal activity literally with the switch of a light.Each year brings more advances in biomedical research-exciting, transformative accomplishments.我們曾學習過如何編輯人類基因譜，揭示了許多關于癌癥的秘密。我們能夠輕松地操控神經元的活動。生物醫藥研究每年都會有很多進步和令人振奮的變革、成就。

Yet, despite the knowledge we have amassed, we haven’t been so successful in deploying it to where it’s needed most.According to the World Bank, twelve percent of the world’s population lives on less than $2 a day.雖然我們取得了很多成就，但是我們卻不能將這些成就傳遞到最需要它的地方。據世界銀行統計數據表明，世界人口的12%一天的生活費不到2美元。

Malnutrition kills more than 3 million children annually.Three hundred million people are afflicted by malaria globally.All over the world, we constantly see these problems of poverty, illness, and lack of resources impeding the flow of scientific information.每年都有三百萬的兒童死于營養不良。全球有三億的人收到瘧疾的影響。在全世界，我們能看到無數的貧困問題，病痛問題以及資源匱乏導致科學信息不流通的問題。

Lifesaving knowledge we take for granted in the modern world is often unavailable in these underdeveloped regions.And in far too many places, people are still essentially trying to cure a spider bite with fire.救生知識在現代化的世界是理所當然的，不過在經濟欠發達地區卻是高不可及的。所以，在許許多多地方，人們還是用火來治療蜘蛛的咬傷。While studying at Harvard, I saw how scientific knowledge can help others in simple, yet profound ways.The bird flu pandemic in the 2000s looked to my village like a spell cast by demons.在哈佛學習期間，我知道了科學知識是如何用簡單的又深刻的方式幫助到其他人的。2000年的一次流感使我的家鄉像被惡魔下了詛咒一般。

Our folk medicine didn’t even have half-measures to offer.What’s more, farmers didn’t know the difference between common cold and flu;they didn’t understand that the flu was much more lethal than the common cold.Most people were also unaware that the virus could transmit across different species.我們的民間治療根本找不到解決辦法。更嚴重的是，農民們不知道普通的感冒和流感之間的區別。他們不明白流感比普通的感冒要致命地多。他們中的大多數人都對病毒在動物種類間的傳播沒有概念。

So when I realized that simple hygiene practices like separating different animal species could contain the spread of the disease, and that I could help make this knowledge available to my village.所以我意識到簡單的衛生治療方法例如將動物隔離可以治療這種病時，我可以用這種方式讓我的家鄉更快接受這種科學知識。That was my first “Aha” moment as a budding scientist.But it was more than that: it was also a vital inflection point in my own ethical development, my own self-understanding as a member of the global community.那是我作為生物科學家的第一次驚嘆。不過也不僅僅就此而已：這也是我自身理念提升的至關重要的一個轉折，也是關于我作為地球上一員的自我理解的轉折。

Harvard dares us to dream big, to aspire to change the world.Here on this Commencement Day, we are probably thinking of grand destinations and big adventures that await us.哈佛鼓勵我們有大夢想，去激勵我們改變這個世界。在這個畢業日，我們也可以想象等待我們的偉大宏圖。

As for me, I am also thinking of the farmers in my village.My experience here reminds me how important it is for researchers to communicate our knowledge to those who need it.Because by using the science we already have, we could probably bring my village and thousands like it into the world you and I take for granted every day.And that’s an impact every one of us can make!但是對于我來說，我還在想著我家鄉的農民們。我的經歷讓我意識到，將知識傳遞給需要的人是多么重要。因為，運用我們所知道的知識，我們可以將知識傳遞到我的家鄉和千萬個像我家鄉一樣的地方帶進這個我們在座每個人所習以為常的世界。

But the question is, will we make the effort , or not? 不過問題是，我們會不會盡力呢？

More than ever before,our society emphasizes science and innovation.But an equally important emphasis should be on distributing the knowledge we have to where it’s needed.很久之前，我們的社會就強調過科學和創新的重要性，但是同等重要的，我們應該強調將這些知識平等地傳遞給需要它的人的重要性。

Changing the world doesn’t mean that everyone has to find the next big thing.It can be as simple as becoming better communicators, and finding more creative ways to pass on the knowledge we have to people like my mom and the farmers in their local community.改變世界并不是說每個人都應該發現下一個偉大的東西。改變世界可以是簡單的方式，比如成為一個更好的傳播者，發現更多有創造力的傳播知識給像我的媽媽和農民這樣生活在未工業化地區的人的方式。Our society also needs to recognize that the equal distribution of knowledge is a pivotal step of human development, and work to bring this into reality.我們的社會也應當明白知識的平衡分布是人類進步不可或缺的一步，這需要我們的努力來實現。

And if we do that, then perhaps a teenager in rural China who is bitten by a spider will not have to burn his hand, but will know to seek a doctor instead.如果我們努力了，一個在中國農村的青少年被毒蜘蛛咬了的話，就不用再火療而是去見醫生了。

近日，一篇《哈佛大學畢業典禮學生演講代表將首現華人留學生》 的文章被國內外媒體廣泛報道。哈佛校方確認該校生物系博士畢業生何江是第一位享此殊榮的中國大陸學生。當天，與他同臺演講的特邀嘉賓將是著名導演史蒂芬·斯皮爾伯格。

何江在美國實驗室 長于湖南鄉村，中科大才子，哈佛全額獎學金碩博連讀，科學巨匠莊小威弟子，世界著名經濟史學家尼爾弗格森邀請寫書......關于何江的故事實在太多太多，對于這位身邊的老朋友，我一直想為他寫一篇文章來鼓勵更多寒門出生的學子。就像何江接受中國青年報采訪時說的一樣：“教育能夠改變一個人的生活軌跡，能夠把一個人從一個世界帶到另一個不同的世界。我希望我的成長經歷，能給那些還在路上的農村學生一點鼓勵，讓他們看到堅持的希望。”

生于鄉村，志存高遠

與何江相識是在2014年的冬季，那天他幫助同為中科大畢業的校友搬進我住的House.第一眼見到他就能感到他與我們平常印象中的博士有些不同。面帶微笑，神情爽朗，聊起天來思維縝密，頭頭是道。但最讓我意外的是馬上就博士畢業的他只有26歲。

何江出生在湖南長沙寧鄉，一個偏僻落后的鄉村。從小就立志要通過讀書來改變人生。憑借自己不懈地努力，高考考入了中科大，這也是他人生第一次離開農村進入大城市。大學期間，何江就樹立了自己的職業目標，那就是要向中科大最著名的校友之

一、華人科學巨匠、美國科學院雙料院士--莊小威學姐學習。因此，他異常努力地做科學研究，盼望能在生物領域有一番自己的成就！功夫不負有心人，憑借優異的成績，他獲得了郭沫若獎學金，這也是中科大學生的最高榮譽。

在大家印象里，學霸往往都是只學習，不與社會接觸，但與大部分的學霸不同的是，何江卻非常喜歡社交。按照他自己準確的說法應該是喜歡有針對性的社交，就是每次向別人提出問題前，一定要做好充分的調查，要不然就不去社交。在大學期間，香港理工大學校長潘宗光曾經來科大進行交流講座，何江聽完講座后，主動和潘校長交流，他的睿智和上進給潘校長留下了深刻印象。兩人從此結成了遠距離的師徒關系，一直保持著溝通交流。

圓夢哈佛，師承小威

雖然生于農村，長于農村，但何江卻一直懷揣著一個出國夢。這很大程度上受到了他的學姐莊小威的影響。憑借著優異的學習成績，加上學校導師和香港理工大學校長潘宗光的推薦信，何江順利地申請到了哈佛生物系的博士學位，并獲得了全額獎學金。大學畢業前，何江就立志要去哈佛找小威學姐。所以他主動地聯系了這位之前只是在報紙和新聞上頻繁出現的學姐。莊小威也非常器重和照顧 自己的中科大學弟，兩人從此建立了師徒關系，何江也有幸在曾出過4、5位諾貝爾獎，享譽世界的哈佛化學系莊小威實驗室做博士研究，而這一做就是5年。

導師莊小威與何江在一起(莊小威：中科大87年少年班學生，生于江蘇省如皋市，是一位華裔美籍生物物理學家，美國國家科學院院士，哈佛大學化學與化學生物、物理學教授，創辦有莊小威實驗室。2015年12月，當選為中國科學院外籍院士。獲獎無數的她，被譽為是中國科學界最接近諾貝爾獎的人。)問及在這位世界聞名的科學家身上學到最多的是什么時，何江毫不猶豫地說： “對科研的熱情與專業！” “她是我的role model，她能教會我最前沿的科學該怎么做！她也可以告訴我“What is the next big thing！”

博士生活多姿多彩

何江坦言，哈佛最吸引他的地方是文理結合，充滿創新的氛圍。在這里，你能接觸到世界上各行業最精英的人才。因此，在他入學的第一年，他就主動申請做本科生輔導員，因為他知道哈佛本科生是世界上最牛的本科生，他想去學習他們的領導力、創新力和表達能力并從中獲得鼓舞。他也想知道像扎克伯格這樣的人才是怎么去思考和學習的，同時這對他的英文能力也是一個提升的機會。他說這個工作讓他最大的收獲就是結交了很多思維開拓、充滿創新意識的年輕人。何江很早就意識到，只搞科研不注重實踐很難有出路，所以他經常去哈佛商學院聽關于經濟和商業的講座。像在中科大一樣，他還是一如既往地去拓展自己的人脈，向自己圈外的人學習。一次偶然的機會，他去參加了世界著名經濟史學家尼爾弗格森的一個關于《經濟全球化》的講座。聽完講座后，何江大膽地去和他分享了自己對于全球化以及中國農村發展的看法。尼爾弗格森對這位與自己完全不在一個領域，卻對經濟全球化如此熱情和有見地的學生產生了興趣。當場，這位世界級的大忙人就問：“你這周三有時間嗎？我想請你出來喝杯咖啡，我們好好聊聊這個話題?！?讓何江沒想到的是，吃飯當天，弗格森教授帶來了好幾位重量級教授，結果他們暢聊了4個小時。最后弗格森建議，你把你的故事寫成一本書吧：從中國農村的變化來反應中國近30年的發展變化，因為你自己就是一個鮮活的例子。何江聽完激動地答應了。

這一個承諾，讓他整整付出了兩年的努力，也幾乎奪走了他的沒有周末。何江坦言，寫這本書對他來說是一個很大的挑戰，因為畢竟英語不是自己的母語。但幸好他之前帶的許多本科學生都樂意幫他修改語法和語式問題。如今這本書已經寫完并在哈佛商學院教授的聯系下，已經與出版社達成共識，最快在今年就能出版。讓我們拭目以待。

創造歷史，華人驕傲

在哈佛臨近畢業季時，一位教授建議他可以嘗試去申請做畢業典禮研究生的發言代表，因為哈佛學生都知道這是哈佛學生的最高榮譽。但是何江一開始聽到這個建議完全沒有自信，因為第一，他覺得自己是一個理科生，不像肯尼迪學院的學生那么善于演講。第二，英語畢竟不是自己的母語，和眾多native speakers比起來，還是會有劣勢。但正如哈佛教育所倡導的，什么事情都要去嘗試，萬一實現了呢？

于是何江接受了教授的建議，從個人的經歷出發，花了兩個星期的時間寫好了初稿。初選競爭異常激烈，有幾百人的參選，在10幾位教授的篩選后，何江成功的入圍復賽。進入了復賽，讓何江看到了希望，聽說復賽只剩下4個人，而 4 且需要完全脫稿，他更加專注于演講的質量。他找到肯尼迪學員專門負責public speaking訓練的教授和許多之前認識的教授來幫他改稿子做訓練。

也許是因為何江個人的經歷剛好體現了哈佛教育改變人的理念，也許是哈佛還從來沒有過一位中國本土來的學生做過學生代表演講。何江最終從四位native speakers中成功突圍，成為今年5月26日上代表哈佛研究生演講的第一位華人代表。這是哈佛學生的最高榮譽，實在是值得我們驕傲。

MIT博后科研先鋒

如今何江依然奮斗在科研的第一線，從哈佛博士畢業后，何江順利進入了自己喜愛的MIT做博后工作。這也與他“科研一定要注重實踐”的理想相一致。他現在研究的課題是“人體的3D打印與應用”，方向是3D打印人體肝臟，進行疾病模擬，研究肝炎病毒、瘧疾以及癌癥早期檢測。這是一個屬于蓋茨基金會的項目，也是生物界最前沿的項目之一。目的是為了對抗危害人類的疾病研究。我真誠期待何江在科研界有更多的建樹，繼續創造屬于他的，也屬于我們的歷史。

會養豬的父母，會讀書的兒郎

“寧鄉人會喂豬，寧鄉人會讀書?！痹凇案x傳家”傳統文化影響深遠的年代，“會養豬，會讀書”無疑是對湖南寧鄉這一地域人文的極大褒獎。在“寒門再難出貴子”之說盛行的當下，何江從寧鄉農村走到了哈佛畢業典禮演講臺，用他的努力證明一個中國農村孩子到底能走多遠。

5月26日，寧鄉縣壩塘鎮停鐘新村，相比較鄰居的高墻大院，何江家沒有圍墻的粉色小樓很不起眼。早上9時，何江的媽媽曾獻華打開微信跟兒子視頻聊天：“江啊，不緊張吧？”

“還好咯，今天要早點休息，明天四五點鐘就要起來準備噠?！惫鸩┦康膶庎l話依舊很標準。此時的波士頓已是深夜了，何江在做最后的演講練習?！叭ッ绹笕诉€胖了。”曾獻華滿意地掛斷視頻。在父母眼里，何江沒有太多的變化，離開寧鄉求學11年，口音依舊。

何江是村里第一個考上重點大學的人，也是第一個念書念到美國去了的人，他的弟弟今年也碩士畢業了。

“村里就我屋里兩個研究生。我們鄉里土話講，養兒不讀書，不如養頭豬?！焙谓赣H何畢成說。

何畢成高中文化，算是農村知識分子，比一般農民要有見識。何畢成懷念上世紀90年代，那時大家都夸寧鄉人會讀書，人們并不那么羨慕當官發財的，卻特別羨慕會讀書能考上名校的。在鄉里，會讀書的孩子往往是一個村子的榜樣，有著莫大的榮耀。

到了新世紀，讀書漸漸不像過去那么“高貴”了，但何畢成依舊有“萬般皆下品、惟有讀書高”的執念。

何江小時候，何家每年都要種20畝水稻，喂三四頭母豬、十幾頭肉豬，兩兄弟從小跟著扯豬草、搞“雙搶”。何畢成喂豬很用心，那些年硬是靠著喂豬種田把孩子的學費都掙齊了。

“他們兄弟都曉得，爸爸媽媽尋錢（賺錢）不容易，他們不講究吃穿，有書讀就滿足了?！痹I華說。再怎么辛苦，何家也沒讓兄弟兩個成為“留守兒童”，一家人的生活清貧卻完整。

村里也有人說話不好聽的，說讀了研究生又怎樣，還不一定找個好工作呢，不一定賺到買房錢呢。其實，從何江大二開始，就不再需要家里給錢，他每年都可以拿到獎學金，并且在外勤工儉學，每個月還有錢寄回家里補貼家用。

小滿時節，雨霧繚繞，寧鄉縣一中，午休中的校園很安靜，離高考還有最后10天時間，“備戰”的氣氛已濃到極致。

高三633班，每個學生課桌邊都是大箱書籍資料。沒有午休的喻遙從復習資料中抬起頭，他說：“我們春暉班的學生都是農村出來的，讀書是我們的出路。”師兄何江，讓這些農村孩子看到了可以到達的高度。

高二學生的神情要輕松許多?！八Ａ?！” 648班的陳羽峰在走廊里說起何江。陳羽峰的高考目標是浙江大學，現在他有了更多想法：“也許我還可以像何江一樣走得更遠一點呢?！?/p>

2005年，何江從寧鄉一中345班畢業，考入中國科技大學。2009年，他以優異的成績入讀哈佛大學，碩博連讀，主攻生物技術領域?！拔覀兲枰@樣的人這樣的故事了，讓孩子們的偶像不僅僅是娛樂明星、體育明星?！睂庎l縣委宣傳部干部張進良說。

何江的英語老師謝芳，與何江關系很好，上大學的時候，何江每個假期都會回來看她，去美國以后，每年正月初一也都要打電話給她拜年。在謝芳看來，何江視野開闊、目標明確，他從進大學起就準備出國，進行托?？荚?，一個寒假9天背了9000個單詞。此外，何江很大膽，英語口語不好，卻敢上臺發言，善于表現自己。

“何江是那種頭腦清晰、有目標、有決斷的學生，從高二就立志學生物科學，”何江的生物老師周海英說，何江的學習非常高效，能主動參與到教學中來。在學校負責團委工作的黃燕老師，還記得何江是一次辯論賽上的最佳辯手，何江的口才一直讓她印象深刻，“他是學霸，但不是書呆子，綜合素質很突出，人很活躍?！?/p>

何江在學校還有一個外號叫“佛祖”，同窗盧絲雨解釋說：“因為他總是笑笑的，從來不會抱怨和生氣，有雙手合十的虔誠感恩。”有年初冬，天氣很冷了，何江還穿著一雙舊涼鞋，幾個同學就合計送了他一雙新球鞋。“何江當時很感動，有些不知所措，只想一下教會大家100道數學題來回饋就好。”

哈佛畢業典禮上的“湘音”

“哈佛的教育教會我們學生敢于擁有自己的夢想，勇于立志改變世界。在畢業典禮這樣一個特別的日子，我們在座的畢業生都會暢想我們未來的偉大征程和冒險。我在此刻不可避免地還會想到我的家鄉?！?/p>

波士頓時間5月26日上午10時，何江在哈佛大學的畢業典禮演講臺上，發出了一個中國學子的聲音，臺下掌聲雷動。

在畢業典禮上進行演講，這是哈佛給予畢業生的最高榮譽，當天與何江同臺演講的特邀嘉賓是著名導演史蒂芬·斯皮爾伯格。這次申請畢業典禮演講，歷經3輪選拔才正式入選?！肮鹜鶎卯厴I生代表大多是文科學生，我提出了一個不同的理科生視角，這可能是打動評委的關鍵原因?！焙谓t虛地說。

他的演講內容從個人故事講起，談到他在中國農村的成長經歷，談及他在哈佛大學做的生物醫學研究，以及如何將他的研究成果向世界更多的地方傳播。而更重要的是，他希望讓更多中國農村的學子看到：“教育能夠改變一個人的生活軌跡，能夠把一個人從一個世界帶到另一個不同的世界?！?/p>

在美國華人世界，何江也引起了不小的波瀾。

“競爭這個演講的機會很不容易，每年有幾千名研究生畢業，去申請的每個人都有一個很棒的故事，” 哈佛大學2011級基礎醫學博士生劉浩說，在美國有很多優秀的中國留學生，何江是其中的一員，他積極申請哈佛畢業典禮演講，也展現了中國學生的自信。

新澤西州醫藥代表梁山說，何江能在語言不通的陌生環境里站穩腳跟，在世界最頂尖的大學演講臺上發表演講，受到美國華人的很大關注。

定居德克薩斯州的楊揚，帶著家里兩個中學生觀看了何江的演講視頻：“這對孩子們很有教育意義?！?/p>

從哈佛大學分子細胞生物學系博士畢業，何江將進入麻省理工學院進行博士后研究，方向是3D打印人體肝臟。他還寫了一本介紹家鄉風土人情的新書，即將在美國出版。

未來，何江還將走得更遠。

蜘蛛咬傷軼事

在我讀初中的時候，有一次，一只毒蜘蛛咬傷了我的右手。我問我媽媽該怎么處理---我媽媽并沒有帶我去看醫生，她而是決定用火療的方法治療我的傷口。她在我的手上包了好幾層棉花，棉花上噴撒了白酒，在我的嘴里放了一雙筷子，然后打火點燃了棉花。熱量逐漸滲透過棉花，開始炙烤我的右手。灼燒的疼痛讓我忍不住想喊叫，可嘴里的筷子卻讓我發不出聲來。我只能看著我的手被火燒著，一分鐘，兩分鐘，直到媽媽熄滅了火苗。

你看，我在中國的農村長大，在那個時候，我的村莊還是一個類似前工業時代的傳統村落。在我出生的時候，我的村子里面沒有汽車，沒有電話，沒有電，甚至也沒有自來水。我們自然不能輕易的獲得先進的現代醫療資源。那個時候也沒有一個合適的醫生可以來幫我處理蜘蛛咬傷的傷口。

在座的如果有生物背景的人，你們或許已經理解到了我媽媽使用的這個簡單的治療手段的基本原理：高熱可以讓蛋白質變性，而蜘蛛的毒液也是一種蛋白質。這樣一種傳統的土方法實際上有它一定的理論依據，想來也是挺有意思的。但是，作為哈佛大學生物化學的博士，我現在知道在我初中那個時候，已經有更好的，沒有那么痛苦的，也沒有那么有風險的治療方法了。于是我便忍不住會問自己，為什么我在當時沒有能夠享用到這些更為先進的治療方法呢？

蜘蛛咬傷的事故已經過去大概十五年了。我非常高興的向在座的各位報告一下，我的手還是完好的。但是，我剛剛提到的這個問題這些年來一直停在我的腦海中，而我也時不時會因為先進科技知識在世界上不同地區的不平等分布而困擾?，F如今，我們人類已經學會怎么進行人類基因編輯了，也研究清楚了很多個癌癥發生發展的原因。我們甚至可以利用一束光來控制我們大腦內神經元的活動。每年生物醫學的研究都會給我們帶來不一樣突破和進步---其中有不少令人振奮，也極具革命顛覆性的成果。然而，盡管我們人類已經在科研上有了無數的建樹，在怎樣把這些最前沿的科學研究帶到世界最需要該技術的地區這件事情上，我們有時做的差強人意。世界銀行的數據顯示，世界上大約有12%的人口每天的生活水平仍然低于2美元。營養不良每年導致三百萬兒童死亡。將近3億人口仍然受到瘧疾的干擾。在世界各地，我們經?？吹筋愃频挠韶毟F，疾病和自然匱乏導致的科學知識傳播的受阻?，F代社會里習以為常的那些救生常識經常在這些欠發達或不發達地區未能普及。于是，在世界上仍有很多地區，人們只能依賴于用火療這一簡單粗暴的方式來治理蜘蛛咬傷事故。

在哈佛讀書期間，我有切身體會到先進的科技知識能夠既簡單又深遠的幫助到社會上很多的人。本世紀初的時候，禽流感在亞洲多個國家肆虐。那個時候，村莊里的農民聽到禽流感就像聽到惡魔施咒一樣，對其特別的恐懼。鄉村的土醫 療方法對這樣一個疾病也是束手無策。農民對于普通感冒和流感的區別并不是很清楚，他們并不懂得流感比普通感冒可能更加致命。而且，大部分人對于科學家所發現的流感病毒能夠跨不同物種傳播這一事實并不清楚。

于是，在我意識到這些知識背景，及簡單的將受感染的不同物種隔離開來以減緩疾病傳播，并決定將這些知識傳遞到我的村莊時，我的心里第一次有了一種作為未來科學家的使命感。但這種使命感不只停在知識層面，它也是我個人道德發展的重要轉折點，我自我理解的作為國際社會一員的責任感。

哈佛的教育教會我們學生敢于擁有自己的夢想，勇于立志改變世界。在畢業典禮這樣一個特別的日子，我們在座的畢業生都會暢想我們未來的偉大征程和冒險。對我而言，我在此刻不可避免的還會想到我的家鄉。我成長的經歷教會了我作為一個科學家，積極的將我們所會的知識傳遞給那些急需這些知識的人是多么的重要。因為利用那些我們已經擁有的科技知識，我們能夠輕而易舉的幫助我的家鄉，還有千千萬萬類似的村莊，讓他們生活的世界變成一個我們現代社會看起來習以為常的場所，而這樣一件事，是我們每一個畢業生都能夠做的，也力所能及能夠做到的。

比以往任何時候都多，我們的社會強調科學和創新。但我們社會同樣需要注意的一個重心是分配知識到那些真正需要的地方。改變世界并不意味著每個人都要做一個大突破。改變世界可以非常簡單。它可以簡單得變成作為世界不同地區的溝通者，并找出更多創造性的方法將知識傳遞給像我母親或農民這樣的群體。同時，改變世界也意味著我們的社會，作為一個整體，能夠更清醒的認識到科技知識的更加均衡的分布，是人類社會發展的一個關鍵環節，而我們也能夠一起奮斗將此目標變成現實。

如果我們能夠做到這些，或許，將來有一天，一個在農村被毒蜘蛛咬傷的少年或許不用火療這樣粗暴的方法來治療傷口，而是去看醫生得到更為先進的醫療護理。
