Years ago, when I started looking for my first job, wise advisers urged, “Barbara, be enthusiastic!Enthusiasm will take you further than any amount of experience.”
How right they were.Enthusiastic people can turn a boring drive into an adventure, extra work into opportunity and strangers into friends.“Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm,” wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson.It is the paste that helps you hang in there when the going gets tough.It is the inner voice that whispers, “I can do it!” when others shout, “No, you can't.”
It took years and years for the early work of Barbara McClintock, a geneticist who won the 1983 Nobel Prize in medicine, to be generally accepted.Yet she didn't let up on her experiments.Work was such a deep pleasure for her that she never thought of stopping.We are all born with wide-eyed, enthusiastic wonder as anyone knows who has ever seen an infant's delight at the jingle of keys or the scurrying of a beetle.It is this childlike wonder that gives enthusiastic people such a youthful air, whatever their age.At 90, cellist Pablo Casals would start his day by playing Bach.As the music flowed through his fingers, his stooped shoulders would straighten and joy would reappear in his eyes.Music, for Casals, was an elixir that made life a never ending adventure.As author and poet Samuel Ullman once wrote, “Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.”
How do you rediscover the enthusiasm of your childhood? The answer, I believe, lies in the word itself.“Enthusiasm” comes from the Greek and means “God within.” And what is God within is but an abiding sense of love--proper love of self(self-acceptance)and, from that, love of others.Enthusiastic people also love what they do, regardless of money or title or power.If we cannot do what we love as a full-time career, we can as a part-time avocation, like the head of state who paints, the nun who runs marathons, the executive who handcrafts furniture.Elizabeth Layton of Wellsville, Kan, was 68 before she began to draw.This activity ended bouts of depression that had plagued her for at least 30 years, and the quality of her work led one critic to say, “I am tempted to call Layton a genius.” Elizabeth has rediscovered her enthusiasm.We can't afford to waste tears on “might-have-beens.” We need to turn the tears into sweat as we go after “what-can-be.”
We need to live each moment wholeheartedly, with all our senses--finding pleasure in the fragrance of a back-yard garden, the crayoned picture of a six-year-old, the enchanting beauty of a rainbow.It is such enthusiastic love of life that puts a sparkle in our eyes, a lilt in our steps and smooths the wrinkles from our souls。

To a large degree,the measure of our peace of mind is determined by how much we are able to live in the present moment.Irrespective of what happened yesterday or last year,and what may or may not happen tomorrow,the present moment is where you are-always.
Without question,many of us have mastered the neurotic1)art of spending much of our lives worrying about a variety of things -all at once.We allow past problems and future concerns to dominate our present moments,so much so that we end up anxious,frustrated,depressed,and hopeless.On the flip side,we also postpone our gratification,our stated priorities2),and our happiness,often convincing ourselves that ‘someday’ will be better than today.Unfortunately,the same mental dynamics3)that tell us to look toward the future will only repeat themselves so that ‘someday ’never actually arrives.John Lennon once said,‘Life is what’s happening while we’re busy making other plans.’When we’re busy making ‘other plans’,our children are busy growing up,the people we love are moving away and dying,our bodies are getting out of shape,and our dreams are slipping away.In short,we miss out4)on life.Many people live as if life were a dress rehearsal5)for some later date.It isn’t.In fact,no one has a guarantee that he or she will be here tomorrow.Now is the only time we have,and the only time that we have any control over.When our attention is in the present moment,we push fear from our minds.Fear is the concern over events that might happen in the future-we won’ t have enough money,our children will get into trouble,we will get old and die,whatever.To combat fear,the best strategy6)is to learn to bring your attention back to the present.Mark Twain said,‘I have been through some terrible things in my life,some of which actually happened.I don’t think I can say it any better.Practice keeping your attention on the here and now.Your efforts will pay great dividends7).

The Ebb and Flow of Life By Charlie Badenhop During my first year in Japan I took a hitchhiking trip and went to numerous fishing villages on the west coast of Japan.In one village I had the privilege of meeting a very special man.He was in his sixties and walked with a noticeable limp.He told me that as a youth he was very involved in karate, but that at the age of twenty five he was injured while working on his father's fishing boat, and he had been limping ever since.as he told me about his life.He said once he realized he would no longer be able to actively take part in karate, he made a firm commitment to use his life as a fisherman to further his martial arts studies.He read various martial arts books and then applied what he read to his work life.在日本的第一年,我曾搭便車旅行,到過西海岸的很多漁村。

作者本名為莫懷戚,為何語文課本中署名為莫懷成?為此,作者在1993年10月17日的《重慶日報》發表文章《關于一篇課文的署名》,寫道:
此文初作于1985年,發表在《中國青年報》上,后被一些雜志乃至中央電視
臺、電臺以不同形式轉發。
1988年,甘肅的雜志《讀者文摘》載了此文,作者始誤成“莫懷成”。我因此去信,談了“我的姓名之意,是不要帶著憂愁,而不是不要有所成就。戚,古漢語有憂傷之意,例:君子坦蕩蕩,外人常戚戚。”后《讀者文摘》以“來信照登”
登了,竊以為一切也就了了。
殊不知,謬種已經流傳。次年的初中語文的補充教材選用該文,就沿襲了“莫懷成”的署名,至現在,成了課文,情形未變。
為什么一直不去更正呢? 一、一個人的文章,被定成課文,全國法定學習,已是殊榮,不該苛求。
二、知我者,何須更正?不知我者,更正了何用?
三、國家審度,看文章的內容形式,不去查作者的祖宗三代,對于以前被“政審”怕了的我,歡欣鼓舞還來不及呢。所以歡喜國家的大迸步,不計個入小損失,并非什么淡泊名利,高風亮節,沒那么玄。①
背景
如作者自己所分析的:本文寫作契機是兩個。其一是一次全家三輩四口人的散步,的確如文中所說:初春,南方的原野,哄了一陣才將母親帶上路??當時我兒子正上幼兒園。他叫“前面也是媽媽和兒子,后面也是媽媽和兒子”也是真的。
第二個契機則是較有理性色彩。我與美國漢學家柯爾特先生相熟后,常就中西文化的異同進行淺層次交談。出我意料的是他對中國文化中的“孝悌”的看法——他反對“悌”(他說弟弟沒有必要高看兄長),而對“孝悌”卻大加贊賞,說中國人的敬老愛幼,是“文化的精髓”,又說英國哲學家培根說過,“哺育子女是動物也有的本能,贍養父母才是人類的文化之舉”,這個,全世界數中國人做得最
好,云云。
我們自己丟掉的,發達國度的人卻拾起來,如獲至寶,這使我感慨不已,開始
重新正視這份看起來很陳舊已無什么油水的民族遺產寫作的念頭就產生了。
選材時,我最終確定第一個契機為文章的外延,或曰思想感情之載體,是這樣
考慮的:
一、這是一次真實的散步,有真人真景及部分真事(細節),這樣,想象加工的部分便有了依托,較之純粹的虛構更有實感;
二、剛好三代人,主體“我”和“我的妻”,客體“兒子”“母親”齊全,便于
“導演”;
三、說“導演”,是因為近年的散文http://jiaoan.cnkjz.com/ws/Index.html>寫作傾向之一,是情節化(也有稱細節化的),總之寓理于事之風長,單純說理之風
消;可讀性越來越被強調。
切入角度:強化“生命”,淡化倫理,一是因為倫理說得已經太多,出新很難;二是“生命之說”不但本質,而且人性與動物性的參照也出來了——只有人類才不但保護幼小的生命,而且善待衰老的生命。②
體裁
散步》寫于1985年,因為是發一種“生命的感慨”,所以注定了它的抒情色彩。因我(作者——編者注)不善詩作,它就成了散文。所以說體裁這東西,往往非作者的刻意選取,實在只是一種自然結果。②
全篇只寫了“散步”一事,但讀來饒有興味,除了真情動人外,再一個原因就是敘事波瀾起伏,引人入勝。入題寫“我和母親走在前面,我的妻予和兒子走在后面”,“散步”已經起步,本該照直走下去,而文章在這里起了一個波瀾:“母親要走大路”,“兒子要走小路”。等到“我”出于愛母之心決定走大路時,事情偏偏又不照“我”的決定發展,母親要改走小路。真是一波末平,一波又起。這兩處波瀾不僅使記敘擺脫了平鋪直敘的弊病,而且展示了“我”對母親的摯愛,母親對孫子的親情。③

八百字短章,一曲溫馨雋永的親情之歌、倫理之歌、生命之歌。其思想內涵的三個層面清晰可辨,耐人尋味。
故事層面:親情。
文章的基本線條是:“我”勸母親散步→全家人一塊散步→走大路與走小路的分歧→“我”母親依從了“我”兒子的→在不好走的地方,“我”和妻子分別背起母親和兒子。從而寫出了一家人之間的互相愛護、尊重、體貼和理解。
寓意層面:使命感。
《散步》的第一人稱敘事視角,與其說為了真實親切,不如說為了強化主體意識,實現使命感。文章中的“我”,一個中年人,上有老,下有小,肩負著承前啟后的責任。當“我”背著母親,妻背著兒子,“慢慢地,穩穩地,走得很仔細”時,覺得“我背上的同她背上的加起來,就是整個世界”。這里通過定格描寫,強化了中間一代人的主體意識,強化了使命感。這種使命感,是親情向倫理道德的升華。
哲理層面:生生不息。
文學反映生活總折射著一定的文化心態,因而,常常閃耀出哲理的光芒。當我們從贍養與撫養的意義上來審視《散步》的三代人時,我們說文章字里行間“滲透著對生活的使命感”;當我們
從生命與時空的意義上來審視三代人的“散步”時,卻應該說,這里還隱含著“生生不息”的哲學道理。尤其是兒子的一個“偉大”發現:散步的三代四口人“前面也是媽媽和兒子,后面也是媽媽和兒子”,這世代的延續,是生命的強音,從而給了使命感以應有的神圣色彩。

“我決定委屈兒子”并非不愛兒子。只是拿母親和兒子比較來看,母親年事已高,在世時日已短,今后像這樣的“散步”很難說還有幾回了。“我”十分孝敬母親,想盡最大的努力滿足母親的愿望,這種孝心是難能可貴的。
二、“一霎時,我感到了責任的重大。”
