如何寫出一篇合格的 PS（個人陳述）

在申請美國或歐洲的大部分大學（本科 / 研究生1）時，一般都會要求提交一篇個人陳述，英文是 Personal Statement，也就是我們常說的 PS。2要撰寫一篇合格的個人陳述，我們首先需要知道我們所申請的大學希望在我們的個人陳述上看到什么，其實也就是大學對我們個人陳述的要求。這一點幾乎所有的大學都沒有太大區別，一般來說一篇合格的個人陳述要包含以下幾點：

1.為什么要申請這個大學及這個項目（專業）？（動機）2.你有哪些經歷和材料可以證明你能夠勝任這個項目未來的學習和研究？（現在的水平）

3.你期待未來在這個項目中獲得什么，有什么計劃？（未來展望）

4.一般要求篇幅不超過兩頁 A4 紙或更少。（字數限制）

我建議在申請任何一所大學之前，一定要先去閱讀該大學對申請材料的要求，自然也包含對 PS 的要求。但就我看到的絕大多數大學的要求而言，如果你的 PS 能夠準確覆蓋到上面的四項基本要求，然后再針對具體大學的要求做一些細節調整和修改的話，基本上可以算是一篇合格的 PS。在本文剩下的部分我將分別針對這四點——動機、現在的水平、未來展望、字數限制——給出撰寫的方法和建議。

1.動機

既然已經決定要申請一所大學的某個項目，那么一定有你的理由和動機。說到理由和動機，每個人不盡相同，只要不違背常理，你只需要放心大膽地把你自己為什么要上這個學校寫出來即可。當然如果你說你也不知道為什么要申請這個學校，那么我覺得放棄是一個很不錯的選擇。

但也有一些朋友會說，我有一些模模糊糊的想法，不知道該如何清晰地抓住它。對于這部分朋友我倒是可以給出幾點思考的建議，從以下幾個角度入手，也許你能夠明白自己為什么要上這個大學和這個專業：

想想自己的理想。

你想成為什么樣的人？

這個項目的學習是否有助于實現我的理想？

如果有，具體能實現到哪一步？

想想自己的職業規劃。

未來你想從事什么樣的職業？為什么？

這個項目的學習是否對你未來想要從事的職業有幫助？

如果有，具體是什么？

如果你正在學習或學習過相同或相關專業，想想學習過程中是否有過觸動你的經歷。

如果有，是什么樣的觸動？ 這樣的觸動是否能夠讓你作出接下來的幾年從事該專業學習或研究的理由？

如果你沒有學習過相關專業（無論申請本科還是研究生），想想為什么要選擇這個專業。

從上面這幾點建議，你也可以看出，個人陳述是一個整體，動機部分和下面的第 2 部分（現在的水平）和第 3 部分（未來展望）內容密切相關。事實正是如此，個人陳述的其他部分主要作用就是用來證明你自己有能力追隨你現在內心的動機，并且有決心堅持下去。說白了，其實就是說明在這個項目學習或研究是你真正內心所向，而不是一時沖動：

? 如果你真正想學這個專業，那么你肯定會花很長時間準備，所以你應該證明你準備過了，準備好了，這正是下面第 2 部分（現在的水平）要證明的事情。

? 如果你真正想學這個專業，那么你肯定對未來的學習或研究有自己的計劃或想法，這正是下面第 3 部分（未來展望）要證明的事情。

2.現在的水平就對申請的作用而言，這部分其實才是 PS 最重要的部分。所謂「現在的水平」，并不是一句「我水平很高」就可以解決的，除了對自己現在水平簡單的描述之外，至少要做到以下兩點：

? 你需要用具體的經歷和事實證明自己水平很高；

? 你需要證明你如此高的水平對未來的學習或研究有幫助。

對于第一點而言我們要做的是收集整理自己過去幾年所做的事情。這絕非易事，不信的話你可以試著回憶一下半個月之前你做了什么，試著說出昨天你瀏覽的網頁中的五條消息。相信很多人要費一番力氣，甚至有些人根本無法給出答案。那我們應該怎么辦呢？

如果你準備在幾年之后申請，出于種種原因看到了這篇文章，那不妨聽聽我的一些建議：

? 使用一些時間管理軟件。如果你一直有使用時間管理軟件的習慣，并且這些軟件可以在云端存儲你放到任務列表的每一件事情的話，你想回顧這幾年所做的事情，無非就是把任務列表按照項目分類梳理一遍而已。有很多時間管理方法能讓你很方便得做到這一點。從今天起開始使用，幾年后你想看你做了什么就會變得無比容易。

? 寫日記或周記。同樣道理，如果你今天開始寫日記，幾年后翻翻日記本或者日記軟件就知道這些年做了什么。

? 制作一份隨時更新的簡歷。假設自己現在就要去求職或申請，那么我的簡歷應該是什么樣子，然后每個月更新一個版本。這個簡歷最終可以用到你的申請中，通過歷史版本的對照，你也可以知道自己究竟做了哪些事情。

如果你現在打算申請，并且湊巧沒有我上面說的這些好習慣的話，也不用太擔心，只需要做好心理準備：一些事情如果沒有提前準備的話，之后處理起來肯定會稍微麻煩一點。作為生活在互聯網時代的人，我們幾乎處在一種每天連線的狀態，因此我們肯定會有一些蹤跡留在互聯網上，這些蹤跡首先就是我們回憶的重要線索，以下一些網站的信息也許會有幫助：

? LinkedIn 領英。如果你有在這個網站上更新信息的習慣，那就太好了。他的作用無異于一份隨時更新的簡歷，而且你一般不會刪除上面的信息，你所做的事情基本上可以一目了然地呈現出來。? 豆瓣網。如果你是一個豆瓣網的忠實用戶，上面應該會有你看過的書、電影、聽過的唱片的信息，甚至會有你用過哪些東西、參加過哪些同城活動的記錄。這些信息的記錄也是你過去幾年經歷的重要線索。比如我知道一本書對我選擇這個專業有很重要的影響，同時看這本書的時候還正在和某老師從事一些其他工作，也對申請有幫助，這些信息也許可以通過你讀這本書的時間串聯起來。

? Facebook / 校內網（人人網）。很多校內活動可能會在這些平臺發布，對于你大學四年參加了哪些活動應該會有記錄。

? 微博 / 微信朋友圈及其他社交網絡。上面分享的信息因人而異，如果你正好是個社交網絡話癆的話，一定也能從中憶起自己的似水年華。

如果你以上這些網站都不常去，并且不使用任何社交網絡，那么我們只能慢慢依靠自己的記憶了。你不妨在自己的手機上新建個文檔，隨時記錄自己想到的過去幾年的事情，差不多一兩個月以后，你應該可以找回足夠的記憶。除非，真的沒什么記憶。

等你收集好了自己的經歷之后，你需要簡單地分類整理，比如你可以按學習、實習、課外活動這樣的角度分類，也可以按照時間去劃分。我們把自己過去扒了個底朝天之后，發現自己水平確實很高（如果沒有這感覺，請把申請學校的排名往后調整 10 位，如果還不行，再調整 10 位，以此類推），那么接下來要做的事情就是，證明自己如此之高的水平對于之后的學習和研究有幫助。

要做到這一點，其實也并不復雜。在自己這些經歷中按照與自己所申請的專業的相關度進行排名，排在前面的基本上都可以證明你有能力學習該項目或專業。但如果你發現排在第一的竟然也無法證明自己的能力，那么我會慎重的建議你換一個專業，同時也希望你慎重考慮一下自己是否真正喜歡現在所申請的專業。不妨問問自己：

你追求的是一種浪漫感覺，還是那不必負責任的熱情？～《別怕我傷心》（詞：李宗盛）

3.未來展望

在證明自己了自己確實有實力完成未來的學業或研究工作之后，接下來要做的是證明自己確實也想這么干——如果你真想了，不會沒有什么計劃吧？ 未來展望這部分可以結合自己的動機進行書寫。如果你明確了為什么要申請這個項目，那么在未來展望部分你需要提供一個計劃，這個計劃完成之后，可以實現你的目標，或者至少離你的目標更近。撰寫時需要注意：

? 確保你的計劃在這個項目中是可行的。比如，如果申請的是偏應用型的碩士，而你未來的計劃是在項目中鍛煉自己的學術能力，為之后申請博士打基礎，那么你的計劃在可行性方面就會打折扣。這種情況下顯然一個研究型碩士更適合你。

? 確保你的計劃可以給該項目或學校作出貢獻。申請本科的朋友可以不用考慮這一點，但如果你申請的是碩士或博士，你能給這個項目帶來什么，可能就非常重要了。尤其是博士，你的科研成果本身也是項目榮譽的一部分，而如果你技能出眾，可以解決項目原本解決不了的一些問題，很有可能就成為你申請成功的理由。

4.字數限制

最后要注意的一點是，絕大多數個人陳述都有字數限制，而且一般要求不超過兩頁。即使沒有特別字數要求，我們通常建議的篇幅也是一頁半到兩頁之間。如果你能夠按照前面的要求認真收集材料，那么我相信寫到這個篇幅應該沒有任何問題。事實上，我們經常碰到的一個問題其實是材料過多，以至于 PS 的篇幅過長，這個時候我們就需要對材料進行一些刪減。這著實是個難題。

作為人類的一分子，我們總是有自戀虛榮的一面，看到自己這么多閃閃發亮的事跡，總是想每一件都講給人聽，所以當我們要刪減材料的時候，每刪掉一個字都像剜掉一塊肉一般。如果你實在不知道改如何下手，下面是一些可行的建議：

? 刪掉與你申請的專業或項目無關的信息。在第二部分我建議你按照相關性對自己的材料排序，其實有一個很重要得目的就是幫你刪減材料，但一定要注意在搜集資料的時候先不要管相關性的問題，否則容易限制思路，而且有些相關性并不是一下子能想到的。

? 刪掉其他申請材料中已經明確體現出來的信息。比如如果你已經提交了成績單，學習成績方面的內容似乎就可以刪掉，除非你的學習成績是一個獨一無二的特點。

? 優先保留和其他材料相互印證的信息。這一點和上一點并不矛盾，由于學校的公信力，你的成績單可以直接證明你的學術能力。但要證明你在其他方面的能力，尤其是和他人合作的一些故事，就不能只聽你一面之詞了。比如你和學校某老師一起合作完成了某個項目，關于這個項目的故事如果既能出現在 PS 中，又能出現在這位老師的推薦信里的話，那么故事的說服力就會增強，除非這位老師寫的內容和你寫的有出入。

? 優先保留體現自己獨特性的信息。這一點很重要，想要在人群中脫穎而出，一定要講明白我和別人哪里不一樣，而這種不一樣如果對未來的學習和研究有幫助，那么你就變成了不可替代的選擇。

如果你能夠聽取上面的建議，那么我相信你能夠寫出一篇合格的 PS，但注意這只是一篇「合格」的 PS，它只滿足了對 PS 的最基本的要求。不過有一點可以放心，當你做到「合格」的時候，你已經比大多數人強了。

When occasionally reading the master piece Letter to a Young Lawyer by Alan Dershowitz, I was deeply attracted by words such as Lawyer, Justice, Practice Mentality, and Creed of Life.These words led to my further meditation on the qualities of a lawyer---critical thinking, efficient methods to defend one’s opinions, logical mentality.Living in a society in desperate need of justice and rightness, I had determined to devote myself to the cause of law resolutely.And the first thing is to be equipped with professional knowledge and practice skills.Thus, after graduation next year from Chongqing University, which is listed in 211/985 project, I intend to further my study at your university due to your prestigious reputation in this area

2、內容上需包括6個why

即你為什么有興趣在這個行業？哪些事情促使你對這個專業的興趣不斷增加加深? 為什么覺得此專業在未來很重要？為什么會選擇這所學校？有哪些具體的研究經歷和研究項目吸引你？你認為自己對該研究領域有沒有價值？

3、主線上需緊扣主題

PS寫作時須緊扣所要申請的專業的主題，主線要清楚明確，不能盲目的追求個性化。許多申請者都認為PS需要“獨特”和“煽情”，因此想盡辦法地挖掘自己的“獨特”點和亂“煽情”，結果往往事半功倍，如果一篇PS中使用了大段篇幅寫一些摸不著主題的個性，那么在招生者眼中，這根本是在做無用功。必須明確，PS這樣一篇短短數百字的文章是沒有地方去說不相干的廢話的。

三、留學生的心得體驗

1、看你是什么專業，如果理工科的學生需要突出對于科研經歷和收獲的描述，如果是文科和商科就要突出自己的特色跟能力，如果你有精彩的故事可以講，對方錄取的人也會喜歡，畢竟他們天天申材料，已經煩的不能再煩了。

2、一定要突出自己的優勢，如果是博士，專業性會很強，讓導師覺得你能幫上忙。

3、個人陳述可以包括：你為什么有興趣在這個行業，你想學任何東西，從這個學校，你的個人性格優勢，獲得獎勵，曾參加在工作中你計劃的未來。

I found my faithful love for finance quite early as my uncle, a financial accountant, began to teach me some simple financial knowledge when he provided me with additional coaching of mathematics since I was young.Then as I learned more academic knowledge in finance, E-Finance for example, in college, I gradually made up my mind to develop it as my future career.Thus I’m now applying to your programme of Accounting and Finance MSc to enrich me with more in-depth knowledge in finance.During undergraduate study, I’ve got a systematic learning in Microeconomics, E-Finance, E-Commerce, E-Marketing and Logistics Management of E-Commerce.In particular, I performed excellent in E-Finance as I scored 91, the highest mark in my class, and I became much more familiar with e-banking, online securities trading and the working processes of call center.In the final year of undergraduate study, I’m now learning Principle of Management, Case Study of the Security of E-Commerce, The Criteria and Law in E-Commerce, Customer Behavior and International Trade Affairs.In terms of quantitative courses, I have learned Advanced Mathematics, Linear Algebra and Probability Theory & Mathematical Statistics and in the last course I’ve mainly studied central limit theorem, the principal distributions, testing of statistical hypotheses, parameter estimation, linearity regression and equal analysis, and stochastic differential equations.With my great efforts, I got 85.66 for current overall average and 87.64 for the average of E-Commerce major specializations and ranked of 5/53 and 4/53 respectively in my class.In addition, I was awarded B-class scholarship and won the title of ‘Excellent Student’ as well in 2008.Besides focusing on professional study, I also pay a great attention to improving leadership.Shortly after I entered into the college, I joined in the Literature & Art Unit of the Student Union.In a year, I perfectly accomplished my work, such as field arranging and programme planning, etc., in holding the award ceremony of the Webpage Design Competition and the English Culture Festival.For my excellent leadership and organizing ability showed in the above activities, I was elected as the president of the Unit in September 2007.Thereafter, I successfully organized many ceremonies and festivals which were widely appreciated by students and teachers.When being active in extra-curriculum activities, I also grasped chances to develop my English capacity.I once participated in the shows of English Culture Festival---the English dramas Beauty and the Beast, and Titanic---in which my oral English was well practiced.Meanwhile, I also focused on cross-culture communication as I made friends with several oversea students from England, Finland, and France.I was quite fascinated with the European culture they introduced to me which impelled me to get my postgraduate study in UK.Through the above preparation, I’m sure that I’ve got ready to study in Manchester.I believe with a hard work I can have a deep insight in the accounting and financial courses you provide and what I would learn can greatly contribute to my career development---after graduation, I will work as a financial analyst in a key investment firm in China, and when being experienced with practical financial investment operations, I then plan to be a senior financial advisor in a world famous investment bank.
