In 2009, when everyone in China was saving money for real estate investments, I was putting money away so that I could come to the United States and study.This was not a popular decision among my family and friends.Why would I give up a great job and life to travel half way across the earth and become a poor college student again? （一）詳讀學(xué)校的寫作說明并了解問題的重點(diǎn),不贅言,不遺漏,且在要求的字?jǐn)?shù)內(nèi)完成。例如學(xué)校要求五百字內(nèi)完成(In 500 words or less discuss...),則全文最好不要超過五百字。如果學(xué)

校要求以問答方式來敘述(Responses to essay questions, Please limit your response to on page.),即依其要求回答不長過一頁。

（二）寫作時(shí)應(yīng)清楚明確。例如：

1.“I am interested in English literature” 這句話表達(dá)不夠清楚,而I was concentrated on Milton and Shakespeare in college“ 就明白的說出了申請(qǐng)人的志趣及研究范圍。

2．”I received extensive training in physics“ 這句話不夠詳細(xì),”My training was in the area of particle physics“就具體多了。

3.”I was very active as a student representative“ 最好說明曾經(jīng)做什么:組織活動(dòng),主辦演講,溝通學(xué)生與校方意見等。

4．”I am attracted to your department by its brilliant faculty.“應(yīng)說明對(duì)於教授的認(rèn)知是從何而來,如在何處讀到某教授的文章而愿受教于他,或某位教授正在從事一項(xiàng)重要研究,與自己欲攻讀的研究領(lǐng)域相同等。表達(dá)對(duì)所申請(qǐng)之系的課程、教師和特性有些了解,依學(xué)校之不同而提及某位任教於該校的教授、新課程或該校的某個(gè)學(xué)位有興趣。

（三）不要用語意模糊的句子,如 ”Your esteemed school“應(yīng)代以學(xué)校的名字。”I will return to serve my country“應(yīng)明確的說出所要從事的到底是什麼工作等。

（四）避免用深?yuàn)W的字匯,盡量以簡單容易的字來表達(dá)。

（五）不要離題,談?wù)撘恍┎幌喔傻氖隆?/p>

（六）態(tài)度誠懇認(rèn)真,不卑不亢。不用為自己的弱點(diǎn)道歉,比如托福成績不高等；也不要表現(xiàn)得過份自信。重要的是給學(xué)校一個(gè)專業(yè),認(rèn)真的印象。

（七）不要抄襲,改寫書上的樣本文章。應(yīng)詳讀學(xué)校的介紹,了解其要求,再對(duì)自己的學(xué)業(yè)背景、計(jì)劃加以考慮,寫出自己的風(fēng)格。

（八）檢查英文的時(shí)態(tài)、性別及單多數(shù)等方面的錯(cuò)誤。

3.Don't write an autobiography, itinerary, or resume in prose.4.Don't try to be a clown(but gentle humor is ok).5.Don't be afraid to start over if the essay just isn't working or doesn't answer the essay question.6.Don't try to impress your reader with your vocabulary.7.Don't rely exclusively on your computer to check your spelling.8.Don't provide a collection of generic statements and platitudes.9.Don't give mealy-mouthed, weak excuses for your GPA or test scores.10.Don't make things up.自述，即Personal Statement，是所有出國文件中最重要的部分，它是申請(qǐng)者最主要的自我包裝。申請(qǐng)的過程就是要把自己推銷給評(píng)審者的過程。你的任務(wù)是讓這一文件反映你的個(gè)性和才智。寫自述即使對(duì)以英語為母語的北美、英聯(lián)邦國家學(xué)生也是頗費(fèi)心力的事情。對(duì)中國申請(qǐng)者來說，用英語寫作本來就是困難的事，更何況自述是為了表現(xiàn)和包裝自己，有違我們的文化習(xí)俗，所以寫起來往往倍感吃力。中國申請(qǐng)者往往沒有面談的機(jī)會(huì)，因而這份文件愈發(fā)顯得重要。

需要忠告所有的申請(qǐng)者：必須抓住機(jī)會(huì)，充分且恰如其分地表現(xiàn)你的人格魅力、智慧和已取得的成就。制作自述要花大量的精力，決不能草率從事。你已經(jīng)花費(fèi)了多年的心血，完成了大學(xué)甚至是研究生的學(xué)習(xí)，你也可能又在隨后的工作崗位上積累了寶貴的經(jīng)驗(yàn)，現(xiàn)在又通過艱苦卓絕的努力成功地考過了IELTS、TOEFL和GRE。然而，你的任務(wù)并沒有結(jié)束。你必須靜下心來，有條不紊地處理多種文件，這其中自述是重中之重。

怎樣真正地把此項(xiàng)工作當(dāng)作重中之重呢?并不是讓你趕緊去買一本所謂范例然后照著抄，而是要借此機(jī)會(huì)嚴(yán)肅、認(rèn)真和全面地審視自己的才能、潛能以及出國留學(xué)的目的。這種對(duì)自己的能力、向往和追求的透徹了解是寫作自述的基礎(chǔ)。根據(jù)筆者在國外求學(xué)、工作的經(jīng)驗(yàn)，可以這么說，在寫好自述這件事上，中國留學(xué)生可以說是遇上了一個(gè)深層次而且是重大的文化差異。其中所謂“深層次”就是說這個(gè)差異不是西方人喝咖啡中國人喝茶、西方人稱“Darling”而中國人稱“孩子他媽”那樣簡單。

國外許多“雇主”和大學(xué)的錄取評(píng)審者非常重視求職者、求學(xué)者對(duì)自身是否了解以及對(duì)自己的前途和目標(biāo)是否明確。在他們的文化中，這樣的自我了解被視為是人的素質(zhì)中很重要的一部分。同時(shí)，他們也十分重視對(duì)此作出個(gè)性化表達(dá)的能力。我并不是要討論文化問題，而是力求以最短的篇幅給申請(qǐng)人以最大的實(shí)用指導(dǎo)。切記不要把寫作自述一事當(dāng)作官樣文章而草率應(yīng)付。國外教育機(jī)構(gòu)的官僚主義常常更甚于我國，但要求寫自述，的確不是官樣文章，而是給申請(qǐng)者一次表現(xiàn)自己的機(jī)會(huì)。請(qǐng)各位申請(qǐng)人切記，這樣的表現(xiàn)一定要富有個(gè)性。怎樣判斷自述是否反映了個(gè)性呢?最簡單的辦法就是看第二個(gè)人是否能寫出一樣的或是差不多的內(nèi)容。真正富有個(gè)性的自我介紹是不可能與其他人的自我介紹雷同的。盡管有許多人有著看上去類似的求學(xué)、求職經(jīng)歷，但是每個(gè)人對(duì)學(xué)習(xí)、工作、事業(yè)和他人的感受應(yīng)該是獨(dú)特的。即使兩個(gè)人所有的學(xué)習(xí)和工作經(jīng)歷都相同，也都計(jì)劃去同一個(gè)領(lǐng)域深造，但是引發(fā)他們對(duì)該學(xué)科感興趣的外部事物和內(nèi)心感受也必定是有區(qū)別的。所以，在我們談到寫作自述其他注意事項(xiàng)之前，首先要求申請(qǐng)者要獨(dú)具創(chuàng)意。在寫作時(shí)認(rèn)真而全面地審視自己的方法就是默默地自問如下問題：

1.對(duì)所要申請(qǐng)的學(xué)校和專業(yè)是否有了深入、細(xì)致的了解;能否做到在寫自述時(shí)緊扣學(xué)校和專業(yè)的要求及特點(diǎn)，突出自己的申請(qǐng)優(yōu)勢(shì)?

2.我的人生經(jīng)歷中有什么獨(dú)特的、非同尋常的地方?在我的家庭生活和社會(huì)生活中有哪些人或事件影響了我的人生觀和事業(yè)追求?這些影響有什么與眾不同的地方?

3.我最初是如何對(duì)目前所選專業(yè)感興趣的?我在其后的歲月中又是如何加深了對(duì)這一學(xué)科領(lǐng)域的認(rèn)識(shí)的?我在這一領(lǐng)域已經(jīng)取得了什么樣的成績?是什么因素使我相信自己能夠在這一領(lǐng)域有所建樹?

4.在上學(xué)期我從事了哪些助教、助研、社會(huì)實(shí)踐或暑期工作?通過這些活動(dòng)在什么方面得到了提高(比如科研能力、組織能力和領(lǐng)導(dǎo)能力等)?在步入社會(huì)后的工作中完成過什么項(xiàng)目?取得了哪些成就?表現(xiàn)出何等才干?

5.我最終的事業(yè)目標(biāo)是什么?

6.我多年來的考試成績有沒有需要解釋的地方?比方：大學(xué)成績一直很優(yōu)異，但GRE成績卻不怎么理想;高年級(jí)的成績是否比低年級(jí)的成績有顯著提高?

7.在自我奮斗的過程中是否需要克服超常的困難，如家庭生活貧困、身體殘疾等?

8.我是否具備杰出的品格，比如誠實(shí)、可靠、善良、刻苦等等?對(duì)此我能否提供真憑實(shí)據(jù)來加以證明?我是否具備值得一提的優(yōu)秀的工作習(xí)慣和態(tài)度，以及品質(zhì)上的優(yōu)勢(shì)。

9.我具備什么樣的特殊才能，如分析能力、領(lǐng)導(dǎo)才能和交流才能?我為什么比別的申請(qǐng)者更具有在事業(yè)上成功的把握?

要回答這些問題的確不容易，但你必須在正式寫作自述之前全面準(zhǔn)備，認(rèn)真思考這些問題，因?yàn)槟愕淖允鲂枰卮鹚羞@些問題或其中的大部分。

對(duì)內(nèi)容有了把握后，就要注意寫作技巧了。這里說的寫作技巧不是英語水平的問題，而是寫作思路、取材和段落的安排。寫自述的最大忌諱就是寫得毫無特色、枯燥乏味。要知道每一個(gè)錄取評(píng)審委員需要閱讀成百上千份自述，其中大多數(shù)自述的內(nèi)容都是雷同的。他們不可能有時(shí)間和精力在平淡中尋找不尋常，努力發(fā)掘你的優(yōu)秀之處。要寫得醒目，抓住讀者的注意力，這個(gè)責(zé)任完全在你自己。

所以，自述的第一段或者是前兩段尤為重要——必須能夠引起讀者對(duì)你的興趣，且能體現(xiàn)出關(guān)于你個(gè)人的最重要的信息。如果你的這兩段內(nèi)容中有閃光之處，能夠給人留下深刻的印象，那么就達(dá)到了最佳效果。

鑒于絕大多數(shù)申請(qǐng)者的確有著類似的學(xué)歷和工作背景，而且現(xiàn)在又在追求一個(gè)共同的目標(biāo)，因此，寫作中的雷同很難避免。在這里，筆者要強(qiáng)調(diào)獲得獨(dú)特性的兩個(gè)重要方法：一是尋找獨(dú)特的思想方法或?qū)徱曌约旱莫?dú)特角度;二是在陳述過程中采用故事手法。

采取第一種方法時(shí)，我們要從多種角度確定文章的基調(diào)。在此，我們對(duì)三種較常見的類型進(jìn)行簡要論述：

1.克服生活中的逆境型：筆者曾看過一位外國申請(qǐng)者寫的自述。作者的家庭背景是貧苦的、不識(shí)英文的第一代亞裔移民。作者沒有回避自己多花了幾年時(shí)間才完成大學(xué)的教育并且成績較差這一慘痛的事實(shí)，而是就此問題展開了對(duì)自己的介紹。作為長子的他肩負(fù)幫助父母撫養(yǎng)年幼妹妹的重任。因此，完成大學(xué)教育對(duì)他來說需要艱苦卓絕的努力。通過他的敘述，一位意志堅(jiān)強(qiáng)、吃苦耐勞并具有高度責(zé)任感的年輕人的形象躍然紙上。

這位作者申請(qǐng)的是法學(xué)院，難度較大，但作者有力地陳述了他的理由：他的父母像許多亞裔移民一樣，不懂英文，更不懂在美國用法律的手段來保護(hù)自己的權(quán)益。他現(xiàn)在申請(qǐng)讀法學(xué)院，目的就是為了將來能夠使用法律的武器維護(hù)美國少數(shù)族裔的權(quán)益。

這樣的信讀起來感人至深，作者當(dāng)然也被錄取了。成功之處就在于作者能以獨(dú)特的角度來看待自己的經(jīng)歷和追求的目標(biāo)，并使兩者達(dá)到了高度統(tǒng)一。

在寫這種在逆境中奮起的自述時(shí)，應(yīng)通過事實(shí)來描述過去的經(jīng)歷及這段經(jīng)歷對(duì)自己的求學(xué)、事業(yè)和人生目標(biāo)的正面影響。切忌耽于自我憐憫，或以一種譴責(zé)評(píng)判的方式使文章顯得充滿怨氣。本章列舉的第7例Bi Niniu(真名隱)的自述改后稿可說是這種自述的經(jīng)典之作。

2.自我成長型：這種申請(qǐng)人在生活、學(xué)業(yè)和工作上雖不可避免地遇到了某些挫折，但相對(duì)來說，他們的生活比較一帆風(fēng)順。寫這種自述一定要用正面、肯定的語氣，清楚、精煉，同時(shí)又要充分、多方面地展示自己獨(dú)特的才智、事業(yè)和求學(xué)的追求方向。本章列舉的第31例Cai Tian先生的自述即屬于這一類型。

3.家庭影響型：這可以是好的家庭背景對(duì)申請(qǐng)者產(chǎn)生了正面的影響，也可以是艱難或不好的家庭環(huán)境作用于申請(qǐng)者，使之反思并發(fā)奮圖強(qiáng)。寫正面的影響時(shí)注意不要過分渲染家庭的幫助和督促向?qū)ё饔茫驗(yàn)檫@往往會(huì)使評(píng)審人認(rèn)為你缺乏主見和能動(dòng)力;同樣，寫不好的家庭背景時(shí)，也不要太多著墨于種種困難，重要的是突出自己不屈從命運(yùn)安排的精神和志向。

至此我們談到了全面和深刻地審視自己、尋找獨(dú)特的角度以及注重運(yùn)用細(xì)節(jié)等問題。下面提出一些關(guān)于材料取舍問題的建議供讀者參考：

首先，千萬不要遺漏掉那些有用的和中肯的成就、經(jīng)驗(yàn)等事實(shí)。

此外，最好不提的還有政治觀點(diǎn)、宗教信仰和其他一切容易引起爭議的話題。有個(gè)別申請(qǐng)者在文件中提到了“上帝”這樣的字眼，犯了西方社會(huì)宗教和學(xué)術(shù)分離的大忌。
