THE PRESIDENT: This afternoon, I spoke with Governor 州長(zhǎng)Malloy and FBI Director Mueller.I offered Governor Malloy my condolences哀悼;慰問(wèn) on behalf of the nation, and made it clear he will have every single resource that he needs to investigate this heinousadj.可憎的;極兇惡的crime, care for the victims, counsel their families. We’ve endured vt.忍耐;容忍too many of these tragedies in the past few years. And each time I learn the news I react not as a President, but as anybody else would--as a parent. And that was especially true today.I know there’s not a parent in America who doesn’t feel the same overwhelming adj.壓倒性的;勢(shì)不可擋的grief that I do.The majority of those who died today were children--beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old. They had their entire lives ahead of them--birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own.Among the fallen 死去的were also teachers--men and women who devoted their lives to helping our children fulfill their dreams. So our hearts are broken today--for the parents and grandparents, sisters and brothers of these little children, and for the families of the adults who were lost. Our hearts are broken for the parents of the survivors as well, for as blessed as they are to have their children home tonight, they know that their children’s innocence has been torn away from them too early, and there are no words that will ease their pain.As a country, we have been through this too many times.Whether it’s an elementary school in Newtown, or a shopping mall in Oregon, or a temple in Wisconsin, or a movie theater in Aurora 奧羅拉(美國(guó)城市), or a street corner in Chicago--these neighborhoods are our neighborhoods, and these children are our children. And we're going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics. This evening, Michelle and I will do what I know every parent in America will do, which is hug our children a little tighter and we’ll tell them that we love them, and we’ll remind each other how deeply we love one another. But there are families in Connecticut who cannot do that tonight. And they need all of us right now.In the hard days to come, that community needs us to be at our best as Americans. And I will do everything in my power as President to help.Because while nothing can fill the space of a lost child or loved one, all of us can extend伸出;給予 a hand to those in need--to remind them that we are there for them, that we are praying for them, that the love they felt for those they lost endures持續(xù) not just in their memories but also in ours.May God bless the memory of the victims and, in the words of Scripture(大寫(xiě))圣經(jīng), heal the brokenhearted and bind up包扎 their wounds.

Remarks by the President After Two Planes Crash Into World Trade Center
Emma Booker Elementary School Sarasota, Florida
Ladies and gentlemen, this is a difficult moment for America.I, unfortunately, will be going back to Washington after my remarks.Secretary Rod Paige and the Lt.Governor will take the podium and discuss education.I do want to thank the folks here at Booker Elementary School for their hospitality.Today we've had a national tragedy. Two airplanes have crashed into the World Trade Center in an apparent terrorist attack on our country.I have spoken to the Vice President, to the Governor of New York, to the Director of the FBI, and have ordered that the full resources of the federal government go to help the victims and their families, and to conduct a full-scale investigation to hunt down and to find those folks who committed this act.Terrorism against our nation will not stand. And now if you would join me in a moment of silence.May God bless the victims, their families, and America.Thank you very much.

Today, our fellow citizens, our way of life, our very freedom came under attack in a series of deliberate and deadly terrorist acts. The victims were in airplanes or in their offices.Secretaries, business men and women, military and federal workers.Moms and dads.Friends and neighbors.Thousands of lives were suddenly ended by evil, despicable acts of terror. The pictures of airplanes flying into buildings, fires burning, huge structures collapsing, have filled us with disbelief, terrible sadness and a quiet, unyielding anger. These acts of mass murder were intended to frighten our nation into chaos and retreat. But they have failed. Our country is strong.A great people has been moved to defend a great nation.Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve.America was targeted for attack because we're the brightest beacon for freedom and opportunity in the world. And no one will keep that light from shining.Today, our nation saw evil, the very worst of human nature, and we responded with the best of America, with the daring of our rescue workers, with the caring for strangers and neighbors who came to give blood and help in any way they could.Immediately following the first attack, I implemented our government's emergency response plans. Our military is powerful, and it's prepared. Our emergency teams are working in New York City and Washington, D.C., to help with local rescue efforts. Our first priority is to get help to those who have been injured and to take every precaution to protect our citizens at home and around the world from further attacks. The functions of our government continue without interruption.Federal agencies in Washington, which had to be evacuated today, are reopening for essential personnel tonight and will be open for business tomorrow. Our financial institutions remain strong, and the American economy will be open for business as well. The search is under way for those who are behind these evil acts.I've directed the full resources for our intelligence and law enforcement communities to find those responsible and bring them to justice. We will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbor them.I appreciate so very much the members of Congress who have joined me in strongly condemning these attacks. And on behalf of the American people, I thank the many world leaders who have called to offer their condolences and assistance.America and our friends and allies join with all those who want peace and security in the world and we stand together to win the war against terrorism.Tonight I ask for your prayers for all those who grieve, for the children whose worlds have been shattered, for all whose sense of safety and security has been threatened. And I pray they will be comforted by a power greater than any of us spoken through the ages in Psalm 23: “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil for you are with me.”
This is a day when all Americans from every walk of life unite in our resolve for justice and peace.America has stood down enemies before, and we will do so this time.None of us will ever forget this day, yet we go forward to defend freedom and all that is good and just in our world.Thank you.Good night and God bless America.
