1.The Road Not Taken(未走過的路)

by(USA)Robert Frost Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth.Then to the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear, Though as for that, the passing there Had worn them really about the same.And both that morning equally lay, In leaves no step had trod black.Oh, I kept the first for another day!Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back.I shall be telling this with a sigh, Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged i a woo, and I----I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.2.Freedom and Love(自由與愛情)by(Ireland)Thomas Campbell How delicious is the winning Of a kiss at loves beginning, When two mutual hearts are sighing For the knot there's no untying.Yet remember, 'mist your wooing, Love is bliss, but love has ruining;Other smiles may make you fickle, Tears for charm may tickle.3.The Silver Swan by Anonymous The silver swan, who living had no note, When death approached, unlocked her silent throat;Leaning her breast against the reedy shore, Thus sung her first and last, and sung no more: Farewell, all joys;O death, come close mine eyes;More geese than swans now live, more fools than wise.4.A Damsel at Vassar by Anonymous A damsel at Vassar named Breeze, Weighed down with B.Litt's and D.D's, Collapsed from the strain.Said her doctor, “It's plain You are killing yourself----by degrees.”

5.Love's Secret(愛情的秘密)by(UK)William Blake Never seek to tell thy love, Love that never told shall be;For the gentle wind does move Silently, invisibly.I told my love, I told my love, I told her all my heart, Trembling, cold, in ghastly fears.Ah!she did depart!Soon after she was gone from me, A traveller came by, Silently, invisibly: He took her with a sigh.6.A Red, Red Rose(紅紅的玫瑰)by(UK)Robert Burns O, my Luve's like a red, red rose, That's newly sprung in June.O, my Luve's like the melodie, That's sweetly play'd in tune.As fair art thou, my bonnie lass, So deep in Luve am I, And I will love thee still, my dear, Till a' the seas gang dry!Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear, And the rocks melt wi' the sun!I will love thee still, my dear, While the sands o' life shall run.And fare thee weel, my only Luve!And fare thee weel, a while!And I will come again, my Luve, Tho' it were ten thousand mile!

7.On Death(死亡)

by(KU)Walter Savager Landor Death stands above me, whispering low I know not what into my ear: Of his strange language all I know Is, there is not a word of fear.

the president: at his trial in 1964, nelson mandela closed his statement from the dock saying, i have fought against white domination, and i have fought against black domination.i have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities.it is an ideal which i hope to live for and to achieve.but if needs be, it is an ideal for which i am prepared to die.

and nelson mandela lived for that ideal, and he made it real.he achieved more than could be expected of any man.today, he has gone home.and we have lost one of the most influential, courageous, and profoundly good human beings that any of us will share time with on this earth.he no longer belongs to us--he belongs to the ages.

i am one of the countless millions who drew inspiration from nelson mandelas life.my very first political action, the first thing i ever did that involved an issue or a policy or politics, was a protest against apartheid.i studied his words and his writings.the day that he was released from prison gave me a sense of what human beings can do when theyre guided by their hopes and not by their fears.and like so many around the globe, i cannot fully imagine my own life without the example that nelson mandela set, and so long as i live i will do what i can to learn from him.

to the people of south africa, we draw strength from the example of renewal, and reconciliation, and resilience that you made real.a free south africa at peace with itself--thats an example to the world, and thats madibas legacy to the nation he loved.

we will not likely see the likes of nelson mandela again.so it falls to us as best we can to forward the example that he set: to make decisions guided not by hate, but by love;to never discount the difference that one person can make;to strive for a future that is worthy of his sacrifice.

for now, let us pause and give thanks for the fact that nelson mandela lived--a man who took history in his hands, and bent the arc of the moral universe toward justice.may god bless his memory and keep him in peace.

i have ordered that all flags of the republic of south africa be lowered to half-mast from tomorrow, 6 december, and to remain at half-mast until after the funeral.

as we gather to pay our last respects, let us conduct ourselves with the dignity and respect that madiba personified.我們聚在一起向曼德拉表示最后的敬意,讓我們向這位崇高而又受人尊敬的人告別吧!let us be mindful of his wishes and the wishes of his family.

as we gather, wherever we are in the country and wherever we are in the world, let us recall the values for which madiba fought.

let us reaffirm his vision of a society in which none is exploited, oppressed or dispossessed by another.

let us express, each in our own way, the deep gratitude we feel for a life spent in service of the people of this country and in the cause of humanity. this is indeed the moment of our deepest sorrow.

yet it must also be the moment of our greatest determination.

a determination to live as madiba has lived, to strive as madiba has strived and to not rest until we have realised his vision of a truly united south africa, a peaceful and prosperous africa, and a better world.

we will always love you madiba!may your soul rest in peace. god bless africa.nkosi sikelel’ iafrika.

man’s dearest possession is life.it is given to him but once, and he must live it so as to feel no torturing regrets for wasted years, never know the burning shame of a mean and petty past;so live that, dying, he might say: all my life, all my strength were given to the finest cause in all the world—the fight for the liberation of mankind.

torturing : adj.

grievous: adj.

i have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed-we hold theses truths to be self-oevident, that all men are created equal.i have a dream that one day on the red hills of georgia, sons of former slaves and sons of former slave owners will be able to sit together at the table of brotherhood.i have a dream my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.i have a dream today!when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and hamlet, from every state and city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of god’s children-black men and white men , jews and gentiles, catholics and protestants-will be able to join hands and to sing in the words of the old negro spiritual, “free at least ,free at last.thank god almighty, we are free at last.”

happiness lies not in the mere possession of money, it lies in the joy of achievement, in the thrill of creative efforts, the joy and moral stimulation of work no longer must be forgotten in the mad chase of evanescent profits.these dark days, my friends, will be worth all they cost us, if they teach us that our true destiny is not to be ministered on to , but to minister to ourselves, to our fellow men. help: stimulation: n.

evanescent: adj.

有資格的六.my fellow americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.my fellow citizens of the world, ask not what america will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of men.finally whether you are citizens of america, or citizens of the world, ask of us here, the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you.with a good conscience of our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking his blessing and his help, but knowing that here on earth, gods work must truly be our own.--by john f.kennedy 譯文:

citizen: n.

ueasoning: adj.

in this symposium:此刻at this timegoal: n.

insignificant: adj.

democracy: n.民主政治、民主主義篇三:經典英語演講99篇 i have a dream---martin luther king i am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.five score years ago, a great american, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the emancipation proclamation.this momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of negro slaves, who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice.it came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity.it would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment.this sweltering summer of the negros legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality.nineteen sixty-three is not an end but a beginning.those who hope that the negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual.there will be neither rest nor tranquility in america until the negro is granted his citizenship rights.the whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.but there is something that i must say to my people who stand on the warm threshold, which leads into the palace of justice.in the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds.let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.we must ever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline.we must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence.again and again we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force.i have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: we hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal.i have a dream that one day on the red hills of georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.i have a dream that one day even the state of mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.i have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.i have a dream today!i have a dream that one day, down in alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of interposition and nullification;one day right down in alabama little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.i have a dream today!i have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, and every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together.and so let freedom ring--from the prodigious hilltops of new hampshire.let freedom ring--from the mighty mountains of new york.let freedom ring--from the heightening alleghenies of pennsylvania.let freedom ring--from the snow-capped rockies of colorado.let freedom ring--from the curvaceous slopes of california.but not only that.let freedom ring--from stone mountain of georgia.let freedom ring--from lookout mountain of tennessee.let freedom ring--from every hill and molehill of mississippi, from every mountainside, let freedom ring!and when this happens, when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of gods children, black men and white men, jews and gentiles, protestants and catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old negro spiritual, free at last, free at last.thank god almighty, we are free at last.inaugural address------john f.kennedy we observe today not a victory of party but a celebration of freedom, symbolizing an end as well as a beginning, signifying renewal as well as change.for i have sworn before you and almighty god the same solemn oath our forebears prescribed nearly a century and three-quarters ago.let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty.this much we pledge--and more.to those old allies whose cultural and spiritual origins we share, we pledge the loyalty of faithful friends.united there is little we cannot do in a host of cooperative ventures.divided there is little we can do, for we dare not meet a powerful challenge at odds and split asunder.if a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich.finally, to those nations who would make themselves our adversary, we offer not a pledge but a request: that both sides begin anew the quest for peace--before the dark powers of destruction unleashed by science engulf all humanity in planned or accidental self-destruction.let us never negotiate out of fear.but let us never fear to negotiate.let both sides explore what problems unite us instead of belaboring those problems which divide us.let both sides, for the first time, formulate serious and precise proposals for the inspection and control of arms, and bring the absolute power to destroy other nations under the absolute control of all nations.and if a beachhead of cooperation may push back the jungle of suspicion, let both sides join in creating a new endeavor--not a new balance of power, but a new world of law--where the strong are just, and the weak secure, and the peace preserved.all this will not be finished in the first one hundred days.nor will it be finished in the first one thousand days;nor in the life of this administration;nor even perhaps in our lifetime on this planet.but let us begin.in your hands, my fellow citizens, more than mine, will rest the final success or failure of our course.since this country was founded, each generation of americans has been summoned to give testimony to its national loyalty.the graves of young americans who answered the call to service surround the globe.can we forge against these enemies a grand and global alliance, north and south, east and west, that can assure a more fruitful life for all mankind? will you join in that historic effort? and so, my fellow americans, ask not what your country can do for you;ask what you can do for your country.my fellow citizens of the world, ask not what america will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man.finally, whether you are citizens of america or citizens of the world, ask of us here the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you.with a good conscience our only sure reward, withhistory the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking his blessing and his help, but knowing that here on earth gods work must truly be our own.mr.chief justice and friends: this is a day of national consecration.and i am certain that on this day my fellow americans expect that on my induction into the presidency i will address them with a candor and a decision which the present situation of our people impels.this is preeminently the time to speak the truth, the whole truth, frankly and boldly.nor need we shrink from honestly facing conditions in our country today.this great nation will endure as it has endured, will revive and will prosper.so, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself--nameless, ueasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.in every dark hour of our national life, a leadership of frankness and a vigor has met with that understanding and support of the people themselves which is essential to victory.and i am convinced that you will again give that support to leadership in these critical days.true, they have tried.but their efforts have been cast in the pattern of an outworn tradition.faced by failure of credit, they have proposed only the lending of more money.stripped of the lure of profit by which to induce our people to follow their false leadership, they have resorted to exhortations, pleading tearfully for restored confidence.they only know the rules of a generation of self-seekers.they have no vision, and when there is no vision the people perish.yes, the money changers have fled from their high seats in the temple of our civilization.we may now restore that temple to the ancient truths.the measure of that restoration lies in the extent to which we apply social values more noble than mere monetary profit.happiness lies not in the mere possession of money;it lies in the joy of achievement, in the thrill of creative effort.the joy, the moral stimulation of work no longer must be forgotten in the mad chase of evanescent profits.these dark days, my friends, will be worth all they cost us if they teach us that our true destiny is not to be ministered unto but to minister to ourselves, to our fellow men.recognition of that falsity of material wealth as the standard of success goes hand in hand with the abandonment of the false belief that public office and high political position are to be valued only by the standards of pride of place and personal profit;and there must be an end to a conduct in banking and in business which too often has given to a sacred trust the likeness of callous and selfish wrongdoing.small

The Sea

(1)The Sea!the Sea!the open Sea!

The blue, the fresh, the ever free!

碧藍,清新,永遠地自由自在!Without a mark, without a bound,沒有標志,沒有境界,It runneth the earth's wide regions 'round;

It plays with the clouds;it mocks the skies;與云彩嬉戲,向蒼穹嘲弄; Or like a cradled creature lies.

(2)I'm on the Sea!I'm on the Sea!

我在海上!我在海上!I am where I would ever be;

這兒是我永遠愿待的地方; With the blue above, and the blue below, 上有藍藍的天,下有藍藍的海,And silence wheresoe'er I go;

If a storm should come and awake the deep, What matter? I shall ride and sleep.

(3)I love(oh!how I love)to ride

On the fierce foaming bursting tide,在泡沫兇惡而崩裂的潮水上,When every mad wave drowns the moon,此時狂浪吞沒了月影,Or whistles aloft his tempest tune,嘯聲高奏著風暴曲,And tells how goes the world below,傾訴底下的世界是何等模樣,And why the south-west blasts do blow.

(4)I never was on the dull tame shore

我從不留戀單調溫馴的海岸,but I lov'd the GREat Sea more and more, 只是愈來愈沉迷于海上,And backwards flew to her billowy breast, 像鳥兒尋找母巢一般,Like a bird that seeketh its mother's nest;忽忙地飛回那濤濤巨浪的懷抱;

And mother she was, and is to me;

For I was born on the open Sea!

THE PRESIDENT: At his trial in 1964, Nelson Mandela closed his statement from the dock saying, “I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination.I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities.It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve.But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”

Through his fierce dignity and unbending will to sacrifice his own freedom for the freedom of others, Madiba transformed South Africa--and moved all of us.His journey from a prisoner to a President embodied the promise that human beings--and countries--can change for the better.His commitment to transfer power and reconcile with those who jailed him set an example that all humanity should aspire to, whether in the lives of nations or our own personal lives.And the fact that he did it all with grace and good humor, and an ability to acknowledge his own imperfections, only makes the man that much more remarkable.As he once said, “I am not a saint, unless you think of a saint as a sinner who keeps on trying.”

I am one of the countless millions who drew inspiration from Nelson Mandela's life.My very first political action, the first thing I ever did that involved an issue or a policy or politics, was a protest against apartheid.I studied his words and his writings.The day that he was released from prison gave me a sense of what human beings can do when they're guided by their hopes and not by their fears.And like so many around the globe, I cannot fully imagine my own life without the example that Nelson Mandela set, and so long as I live I will do what I can to learn from him.

To Gra?a Machel and his family, Michelle and I extend our deepest sympathy and gratitude for

sharing this extraordinary man with us.His life's work meant long days away from those who loved him the most.And I only hope that the time spent with him these last few weeks brought peace and comfort to his family.

To the people of South Africa, we draw strength from the example of renewal, and reconciliation, and resilience that you made real.A free South Africa at peace with itself--that's an example to the world, and that's Madiba's legacy to the nation he loved.

Our thoughts are with the millions of people across the world who embraced Madiba as their own, and who saw his cause as their cause. This is the moment of our deepest sorrow.

Our nation has lost its greatest son.

Yet, what made Nelson Mandela great was precisely what made him human.We saw in him what we seek in ourselves. And in him we saw so much of ourselves.

Fellow South Africans,

Nelson Mandela brought us together, and it is together that we will bid him farewell.

Our beloved Madiba will be accorded a State Funeral.

I have ordered that all flags of the Republic of South Africa be lowered to half-mast from tomorrow, 6 December, and to remain at half-mast until after the funeral.

As we gather to pay our last respects, let us conduct ourselves with the dignity and respect that Madiba personified. Let us be mindful of his wishes and the wishes of his family.

As we gather, wherever we are in the country and wherever we are in the world, let us recall the values for which Madiba fought.

Let us reaffirm his vision of a society in which none is exploited, oppressed or dispossessed by another.

Let us commit ourselves to strive together – sparing neither strength nor courage – to build a united, non-racial, non-sexist, democratic and prosperous South Africa.
