This year marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China--and I would like to send my personal best wishes to the Chinese people and government and to the large Chinese community here in Britain.今年是中華人民共和國建國六十周年，我在此謹向中國人民、中國政府以及英國的華人華僑獻上我個人的衷心祝賀。

Since the 1970s, China’s reforms have brought more people out of poverty in a shorter time than in any other country in history – with profound effects not just for the one fifth of the world’s population who are Chinese but for us all.自上世紀七十年代以來，中國的改革讓更多人在短時間內脫離了貧困，比歷史上任何其他國家所用的時間都要短。這一結果深刻影響到的不僅僅是占世界1/5比例的中國人，也包括我們所有人。
