我國傳統的清明節大約始于周代，已有二千五百多年的歷史。清明最開始是一個很重要的節氣，清明一到，氣溫升高，正是春耕春種的大好時節，故有“清明前后，種瓜種豆”。“植樹造林，莫過清明”的農諺。后來，由于清明與寒食的日子接近，而寒食是民間禁火掃墓的日子，漸漸的，寒食與清明就合二為一了，而寒食既成為清明的別稱，也變成為清明時節的一個習俗，清明之日不動煙火，只吃涼的食品。

關于寒食，有這樣一個傳說：

相傳春秋戰國時代，晉獻公的妃子驪姬為了讓自己的兒子奚齊繼位，就設毒計謀害太子申生，申生被逼自殺。申生的弟弟重耳，為了躲避禍害，流亡出走。在流亡期間，重耳受盡了屈辱。原來跟著他一道出奔的臣子，大多陸陸續續地各奔出路去了。只剩下少數幾個忠心耿耿的人，一直追隨著他。其中一人叫介子推。有一次，重耳餓暈了過去。介子推為了救重耳，從自己腿上割下了一塊肉，用火烤熟了就送給重耳吃。十九年后，重耳回國做了君主，就是著名春秋五霸之一晉文公。

晉文公執政后，對那些和他同甘共苦的臣子大加封賞，唯獨忘了介子推。有人在晉文公面前為介子推叫屈。晉文公猛然憶起舊事，心中有愧，馬上差人去請介子推上朝受賞封官。可是，差人去了幾趟，介子推不來。晉文公只好親去請?？墒?，當晉文公來到介子推家時，只見大門緊閉。介子推不愿見他，已經背著老母躲進了綿山（今山西介休縣東南）。晉文公便讓他的御林軍上綿山搜索，沒有找到。于是，有人出了個主意說，不如放火燒山，三面點火，留下一方，大火起時介子推會自己走出來的。晉文公乃下令舉火燒山，孰料大火燒了三天三夜，大火熄滅后，終究不見介子推出來。上山一看，介子推母子倆抱著一棵燒焦的大柳樹已經死了。晉文公望著介子推的尸體哭拜一陣，然后安葬遺體，發現介子推脊梁堵著個柳樹樹洞，洞里好象有什么東西。掏出一看，原來是片衣襟，上面題了一首血詩：

清明祭祖是中華文明禮儀的優良傳統。中國是一個有五千年宗法文明傳承史的國家。古人認為人死之后，靈魂和軀殼相分離，軀殼可以腐爛消失，而靈魂卻會永生不朽。為了得到自小哺育、養育和教育自己已經去世的父母、祖輩、歷代列祖的保佑，故人們往往用供品，十分虔誠地去向神主行禮，這種社會活動就是祭祀。祭祀作為人類一種最重要的文化活動，不僅源遠流長，而且被看作是頭等重要的大事。我們知道，國史和國家文明史的傳承，是靠個人和家庭的傳續來完成的，無個人和家庭的傳續，歷史將是蒼白的、抽象的，且是無人情味的。逢年過節特別是清明的祭奠儀式是個體與歷史連接的精神臍帶，才使今人的身份清晰而神圣。清明時節對祖先“祭之以禮”的優良傳統，是中華民族生生不息、續展開新的有機構成。

清明祭祖是中華民族尋根謁祖的心愿滿足。人們之所以緬懷先人，祭祀祖先，是因為他們是自己的來源，他們的辛勞和奮斗是我們繼續前行的起點，這是尊重生命與敬畏歷史的不絕之流。天下之人皆有本源，公民各有祖先，民族亦似同理。個體之祖先賴于血緣所系，民族之祖先顯于象征血緣。雖在當今全球一體化的交融時代，“我是誰”的心靈追問的尋根意識仍不可避免，或招之聚于華夏，或去之散于五洲，公祭人文初祖或回家掃墓上墳謁祖，這種祭祀禮儀正好滿足了海內外華夏赤子的心愿。
