Some researchers think they have the answer, and it comes down to the structure of the food, not its chemical composition—a finding that could help rid some processed foods of chemical preservatives.Cream and butter contain pretty much the same substances, so why cream should sour much faster has been a mystery. Both are emulsions—tiny globules(小球體)of one liquid evenly distributed throughout another. The difference lies in what’s in the globules and what’s in the surrounding liquid, says Brocklehurst, who led the investigation. In cream, fatty globules drift about in a sea of water. In butter, globules of a watery solution are locked away in a sea of fat.The bacteria which make the food go bad prefer to live in the watery regions of the mixture.“This means that in cream, the bacteria are free to grow throughout the mixture,” he says. When the situation is reversed, the bacteria are locked away in compartments(隔倉室)buried deep in the sea of fat.Trapped in this way, individual colonies cannot spread and rapidly run out of nutrients(養(yǎng)料).They also slowly poison themselves with their waste products.“In butter, you get a self-limiting system which stops the bacteria growing,” says Brocklehurst. The researchers are already working with food companies keen to see if their products can be made resistant to bacterial attack through alterations to the food’s structure.Brocklehurst believes it will be possible to make the emulsions used in salad cream, for instance, more like that in butter. The key will be to do this while keeping the salad cream liquid and not turning it into a solid lump.1.The significance of Brocklehurst’s research is that ____________.A it suggested a way to keep some foods fresh without preservatives B it discovered tiny globules in both cream and butter C it revealed the secret of how bacteria multiply in cream and butter D it found that cream and butter share the same chemical composition 正確答案:A
2.According to the researchers, cream sours fast than butter because bacteria _________.A are more evenly distributed in cream B multiply more easily in cream than in butter C live on less fat in cream than in butter D produce less waste in cream than in butter 正確答案:B
3.According to Brocklehurst, we can keep cream fresh by ___________.A removing its fat B killing the bacteria C reducing its water content D altering its structure 正確答案:D
4.The word “colonies”(Line 2, Para.4)refers to __________.A tiny globules B watery regions C bacteria communities D little compartments 正確答案:C
5.Commercial application of the research finding will be possible if salad cream can be made resistant to bacterial attack _____________.A by varying its chemical composition B by turning it into a solid lump C while keeping its structure unchanged D while retaining its liquid form 正確答案:D

Material cu
Material culture refers to what can be seen, held, felt, used—what a culture produces.Examining a culture’s tools and technology can tell us about the group’s history and way of life.Similarly, research into the material culture of music can help us to understand the music culture. The most vivid body of material culture in it, of course, is musical instruments. We cannot hear for ourselves the actual sound of any musical performance before the 1870s when the phonograph was invented, so we rely on instruments for important information about music cultures in the remote past and their development. Here we have two kinds of evidence: instruments well preserved and instruments pictured in art.Through the study of instruments, as well as paintings, written documents, and so on, we can explore the movement of music from the Near East to China over a thousand years ago, or we can outline the spread of Near Eastern influence to Europe that resulted in the development of most of the instruments in the symphony orchestra.Sheet music or printed music, too, is material culture.Scholars once defined folk music cultures as those in which people learn and sing music by ear rather than from print, but research shows mutual influence among oral and written sources during the past few centuries in Europe, Britain, and America.Printed versions limit variety because they tend to standardize any song, yet they stimulate people to create new and different songs.Besides, the ability to read music notation has a far-reaching effect on music and, when it becomes widespread, on the music culture as a whole. One more important part of music’s material culture should be singled out: the influence of the electronic media—radio, record player, tape recorder, television, and videocassette, with the future promising talking and singing computers and other developments. This is all part of the “information revolution”, a twentieth-century phenomenon as important as the industrial revolution was in the nineteenth. These electronic media are not just limited to modern nations;they have affected music cultures all over the globe.1.Research into the material culture of a nation is of great importance because ________.A it helps produce new cultural tools and technology B it can reflect the development of the nation C it helps understand the nation’s past and present D it can demonstrate the nation’s civilization 正確答案:C
2.It can be learned from this passage that ________.A the existence of the symphony was attributed to the spread of Near Eastern and Chinese music B Near Eastern music had an influence on the development of the instruments in the symphony orchestra C the development of the symphony shows the mutual influence of Eastern and Western music D the musical instruments in the symphony orchestra were developed on the basis of Near Eastern music B 3.According to the author, music notation is important because ________.A it has a great effect on the music culture as more and more people are able to read it B it tends to standardize folk songs when it is used by folk musicians C it is the printed version of standardized folk music D it encourages people to popularize printed versions of songs 正確答案:A
4.It can be concluded from the passage that the introduction of electronic media into the world of music ________.A has brought about an information revolution B has speeded up the appearance of a new generation of computers C has given rise to new forms of music culture D has led to the transformation of traditional musical instruments 正確答案:C
5.Which of the following best summarizes the main idea of the passage?
A Musical instruments developed through the years will sooner or later be replaced by computers.B Music cannot be passed on to future generations unless it is recorded.C Folk songs cannot be spread far unless they are printed on music sheets.D The development of music culture is highly dependent on its material aspect.

You’re b
You’re busy filling out the application form for a position you really need.Let’s assume you once actually completed a couple of years of college work or even that you completed your degree.Isn’t it tempting to lie just a little, to claim on the form that your diploma represents a Harvard degree? Or that you finished an extra couple of years back at State University? More and more people are turning to utter deception like this to land their job or to move ahead in their careers, for personnel officers, like most Americans, value degrees from famous schools.A job applicant may have a good education anyway, but he or she assumes that chances of being hired are better with a diploma from a well-known university.Registrars at most well-known colleges say they deal with deceitful claims like these at the rate of about one per week.Personnel officers do check up on degrees listed on application forms, then.If it turns out that an applicant is lying, most colleges are reluctant to accuse the applicant directly. One Ivy League school calls them “impostors(騙子)”;another refers to them as “special cases”.One well-known West Coast school, in perhaps the most delicate phrase of all, says that these claims are made by “no such people”.To avoid outright(徹底的)lies, some job-seekers claim that they “attending” means being dismissed after one semester. It may be that “being associated with” a college means that the job-seeker visited his younger brother for a football weekend. One school that keeps records of false claims says that the practice dates back at least to the turn of the century—that’s when they began keeping records, anyhow. If you don’t want to lie or even stretch the truth, there are companies that will sell you a phony diploma. One company, with offices in New York and on the West Coast, will put your name on a diploma from any number of nonexistent colleges. The price begins at around twenty dollars for a diploma from “Smoot State University”.The prices increase rapidly for a degree from the “University of Purdue”.As there is no Smoot State and the real school in Indiana is properly called Purdue University, the prices seem rather high for one sheet of paper.1.The main idea of this passage is that ________.A employers are checking more closely on applicants now B lying about college degrees has become a widespread problem C college degrees can now be purchased easily D employers are no longer interested in college degrees 正確答案:B
2.According to the passage, “special cases” refers to cases that ________.A students attend a school only part-time B students never attended a school they listed on their application C students purchase false degrees from commercial firms D students attended a famous school 正確答案:B
3.We can infer from the passage that ________.A performance is a better judge of ability than a college degree B experience is the best teacher C past work histories influence personnel officers more than degrees do D a degree from a famous school enables an applicant to gain advantage over others in job competition 正確答案:D
4.This passage implies that ________.A buying a false degree is not moral B personnel officers only consider applicants from famous schools C most people lie on applications because they were dismissed from school D society should be greatly responsible for lying on applications 正確答案:D
5.The word “phony”(Line 7, Para.2)means ________.A thorough B ultimate C false D decisive 正確答案:C
The appeal of
The appeal of advertising to buying motives can have both negative and positive effects.Consumers may be convinced to buy a product of poor quality or high price because of an advertisement. For example, some advertisers have appealed to people’s desire for better fuel economy for their cars by advertising automotive products that improve gasoline mileage. Some of the products work.Others are worthless and a waste of consumers’ money.Sometimes advertising is intentionally misleading.A few years ago a brand of bread was offer to dieters(節(jié)食者)with the message that there were fewer calories(熱量單位,大卡)in every slice. It turned out that the bread was not dietetic(適合于節(jié)食的), but just regular bread. There were fewer calories because it was sliced very thin, but there were the same number of calories in every loaf.On the positive side, emotional appeals may respond to a consumer’s real concerns.Consider fire insurance.Fire insurance may be sold by appealing to fear of loss. But fear of loss is the real reason for fire insurance. The security of knowing that property is protected by insurance makes the purchase of fire insurance a worthwhile investment for most people. If consumers consider the quality of the insurance plans as well as the message in the ads, they will benefit from the advertising. Each consumer must evaluate her or his own situation. Are the benefits of the product important enough to justify buying it? Advertising is intended to appeal to consumers, but it does not force them to buy the product.Consumers still control the final buying decision.1.Advertising can persuade the consumer to buy worthless products by _________.A stressing their high quality B convincing him of their low price C maintaining a balance between quality and price D appealing to his buying motives 正確答案:D
2.The reason why the bread advertisement is misleading is that ________.A thin slices of bread could contain more calories B the loaf was cut into regular slices C the bread was not genuine bread D the total number of calories in the loaf remained the same 正確答案:D
3.The passage tells us that _______.A sometimes advertisements really sell what the consumer needs B advertisements occasionally force consumers into buying things they don’t need C the buying motives of consumers are controlled by advertisements D fire insurance is seldom a worthwhile investment 正確答案:A
4.It can be inferred from the passage that a smart consumer should _________.A think carefully about the benefits described in the advertisements B guard against the deceiving nature of advertisements C be familiar with various advertising strategies D avoid buying products that have strong emotional appeal 正確答案:A
5.The passage is mainly about ________.A how to make a wise buying decision B ways to protect the interests of the consumer C the positive and negative aspects of advertising D the function of advertisements in promoting sales 正確答案:C 寫作題(總分15分,1題)Directions:

C More students than ever before are taking a gap year(間隔年)before going to university. It used to be the “year off” between school and university. The gap-year phenomenon originated(起源)with the months left over to Oxbridge applicants between entrance exams in November and the start of the next academic year. This year, 25,310 students who have accepted places in higher education institutions have put off their entry until next year, according to statistics on university entrance provided by the University and College Admissions Service(UCAS).That is a record 14.7% increase in the number of students taking a gap year.Tony Higgins from UCAS said that the statistics are good news for everyone in higher education.“Students who take a well-planned year out are more likely to be satisfied with, and complete, their chosen course.Students who take a gap year are often more mature and responsible,” he said. But not everyone is happy.Owain James, the president of the National Union of Students(NUS), argued that the increase is evidence of student hardship – young people are being forced into earning money before finishing their education.“New students are now aware that they are likely to leave university up to£15,000 in debt.It is not surprising that more and more students are taking a gap year to earn money to support their study for the degree.NUS statistics show that over 40% of students are forced to work during term time and the figure increases to 90% during vacating periods,” he said.29.What do we learn about the gap year from the text?
As is vividly described in the left part of the drawing, thirty years ago, there stood a delicate mother, holding the tiny hand of a lovely girl, who wore a red scarf. On the contrary, the right part of the picture illustrates that with time flying quickly, the little girl, who has already grown up as a gorgeous lady, is supporting her old mother. We are informed: accompanying. It is without saying that the old and the young are two indispensable parts in society. On the one hand, what we have and enjoy now was created by our parents in the early days, as the old Chinese saying goes, “One generation plants tress under whose shade another generation rests”.On the other hand, all of us are supposed to take good care of the youngsters, too.It is children who make us see the future of our state, for they are the future builders of our country. The young should consider it a moral obligation respecting and taking care of old parents.Meanwhile, it is also the duty of the parents to protect, educate and look after the youths.Let's bear this in mind and cultivate that virtue together, because only by doing so, can we feel as if we were living in a happy and harmonious family.2013年考研英語作文及范文

In the above picture, we can see an interesting scene: a bottle is knocked over with the liquid inside splitting out, and two men respond to it in totally different ways. One is expressing his disappointment for the loss of half of the liquid while the other feels thankful for the remaining half with a smile on his face.Obviously, the drawer wants to tell us that different people may have different outlooks on various difficulties in life. When faced with obstacles in life, the pessimistic person always focuses on the negative side and exaggerates the worst situation, while the optimistic one always look on the bright side of life. The pessimistic person chooses to give up quickly and then broods over their loss or failure, which in turn will throw their life in the vicious circle. On the contrary, the optimistic person, who always bears hope in mind, will never flinch and will summon up courage to find the way to conquer the obstacles. Therefore, the way people perceive difficulties will determine their way to cope with them. From the above discussion, we come to know that if people want to succeed in this highly competitive society, they should try to develop an optimistic perception toward life. Moreover, the government, mass media and schools should take the responsibly to awaken people to the significance of optimism.Only in these ways can people achieve more rapid progress and greater success in their life.2011年考研英語作文及范文

Vividly depicted in the cartoon is a race of humans on a social network that are isolated in their own little cubicles. They are all sitting in front of their computers, connected to each other through the Internet and their devoted looks and postures showed their addiction to the Internet. This cartoon, I believe, intends to draw our attentions to the negative effects the Internet has brought to our daily life as it brings in some benefits, such as easy access to information, instant communication with people from afar and cheap cost of communication. The more people are hooked to the Net, the more isolated they are from the real world.Since people can easily pretend their identities on the Internet, everything online becomes illusive and untrustworthy. The Internet, which was intended to bring people closer to each other, in effect prevents people from making real acquaintances that one can make with a casual exchange of greetings and eye-contact in a face-to-face communication.Serious consequences, such as fear of real-time interactions, online cheating or blackmailing, may follow if the use of the Internet is not brought under systematic control.I strongly suggest that people only use the Internet for necessary business transactions and personal contacts with those they have already known face to face.2008年考研英語作文及范文

What an impressive cartoon it is in describing one of the most wide-spread social phenomena concerning cooperation and communication. As is symbolically illustrated in the cartoon, supporting each other with their powerful hands, two handicapped adolescents are continuing their new journey on the ground.Crutches left behind, they have successfully cracked the hard nut of lameness which might have confused the majority of the disabled. The caption indicates, “You have merely one leg and so do I.Helping each other, we can travel extensively.”
Undoubtedly, we can deduce from the portrayal that the cartoonist is trying to attract our attention to the issue cooperation makes success.According to a survey conducted among a group of people who were in the same college class 10 years ago, those who are ready to give their cooperation to others all become rich or managers of all field, while not a single young man having difficulty in getting along with their classmates becomes an executive or boss. Why those who are excellent in team work tend to be managers or own their own enterprise in their later life? The answer seems self-evident.On the one hand, if you are competent in profession, but have difficulty in getting along with your colleagues and even your boss, you can hardly survive the corporation. On the other hand, your chances of success are much higher with wide circle of friends who are willing to cooperate with you to provide information and resources. It is my view that, first of all, we can frequently use the drawings to enlighten the juvenile to learn to cooperate successfully with each other. On the other hand, whatever difficulty or situation we are confronted with, those who have the spirit of cooperation and team work are nearer to success.Just as John Adams, the second U.S.president quoted from the ancient Greek Aesop’s Fables, “United we stand, divided we fall.”

Dear Sir or Madam,I’m a student in the university and a loyal reader of this library.I’m writing to tell some of my ideas, which I hope to be helpful for you.I notice that many magazines in our library are out of date.It would be beneficial to us students if they could be updated in time. And I suggest introducing some new journals so as to bring new fresh air to the library.Furthermore, since we have a huge number of books, it is not easy to find the right one easily. However, if we can introduce some new searching means, such as implementing new information management system that would be useful.Thank you for taking time reading this letter and I’m looking forward to seeing some new changes soon.Sincerely Yours,Li Ming

As can be seen from the cartoon, different ideas may come from the same thing. In the picture, while trying to catch the upcoming soccer, the goal-keeper says to himself why it is so big. And, the striker simply thinks in a different way, that is why it is so small?
What makes such a big contrary on the same tournament at the same moment? It is no doubt that they are facing the very same goal and experiencing the very same moment. However, the subjective views result in different impression on the same object. Many of us may still remember the story of a pony crossing the river, which we learned from the textbook in primary school. The squirrel tells him, the river is deep;and the cow tells him, the river is not deep at all. However, in the end, he tells himself a third answer. Therefore, it is not exaggerating to say that most of us are looking into the world with personal ideas.Subjective mental status may result in a really big difference in personal views, just like the goal-keeper and the striker in the drawing.A possible solution might be to face any situation as objectively as possible. If we realize this in an objective way, it would be good for us to deal with what we encounter in life, especially when we are in setbacks or facing difficulties.
