1.Like attracts(或 draws)like. (like 指 similar people)這與另一句謬語(yǔ) 「Birds of a feather flock together.」(相同羽毛的鳥(niǎo)在一起)意義相似。
2.(Too much)familiarity breeds contempt.意思是說(shuō):相處過(guò)於親密,就會(huì)產(chǎn)生侮慢之心(不尊重)(即 low opinion)(breed = create)這句話又與另一句俗語(yǔ)「Too thick does not stick.」(太稠或太濃反而黏不住)意思相近。 3.Once bitten(或 bit),twice shy. (shy = avoid)動(dòng)詞時(shí)態(tài):bite, bit, bitten(或 bit)這又與另一句俗語(yǔ)「A burnt child fears(或dreads)the fire.」(被灼傷的小孩怕火)相似。 When you have bad experience, you don’t want to have the same experience again.
4.A stitch in time save nine. 這句警語(yǔ)與「An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.」(一分的預(yù)防,勝於十分的治療)意義相近。此外,還有:「Don’t wait for a rainy day to fix the roof.(不要等到下雨時(shí)才去修補(bǔ)屋頂);或「Always prepare for a rainy day.」或「Prepare for the worst and hope for the best.」(做最壞的打算和最好的希望)這些警語(yǔ),說(shuō)的都是「未雨綢繆」。
5.Old habits die hard. 「It is difficult to break an old habit.」這與另一句諺語(yǔ):「You can not teach an old dog new tricks.」(你不能教老狗新把戲)。
6.Absence makes the heart grow fonder. 「When a person is absent, we may think of him/her more often.」
7.A penny saved is a penny earned. 後來(lái)有人改口說(shuō): Take care of your pennies(=pence)and the pounds(=dollars)will take care of themselves. If you save small amount of money, you will eventually have a large sum of money.
8.When in Rome, do as the Romans do. 所以有人也改口說(shuō): When in America, do as the Americans do.
9.What is done cannot be undone. 這與另一句諺語(yǔ) 「Don’t cry over spilt milk.」或「It is no use crying over spilt milk.」 也就是說(shuō):What is done is done或What has taken place, nothing can be done about it.(take place=happen)就是「覆水難收」、「往者已矣」。
10.Don’t(或Never)cross a bridge till(或until)you come to it. 也有人說(shuō):We have to go across the bridge when we come to it.(it 指橋;bridge也指問(wèn)題或困難),換句話說(shuō):不必為將來(lái)顧慮太多「Don’t worry too much in advance.」 「You have to face the problem or difficulty when the time comes.」
All good things must come to an end. (Road bumps in our life.) (There is light at the end of the tunnel.)12.Beauty is but(=only)skin-deep. 「Beauty is just as deep as skin.」這與其他兩句格言:「Don’t judge a book by its cover.」(評(píng)價(jià)一本書(shū)不是只看書(shū)的包裝)「Appearances are deceiving.」(外表是騙人的)意義相近,所以唯有內(nèi)在的品格才是永久的重要的,(Personality Counts),不可以貌取人,否則就成為所謂的「繡花枕頭」了。
13.What goes around comes around. 「What comes out of you will return to you.」 (注意:不是What comes around goes around.)
14.Money talks. 22.Champagne tastes on a beer budget. (Some people spend more money than they can afford.)或Some people live beyond their means.
23.It never rains, but it pours. (The bad thing come in succession.)
24.One picture is worth a thousand words. (Seeing is better than hearing a hundred times.)(注意:Words are worth a thousands pictures.,又是指一篇文章描寫(xiě)得十分生動(dòng))
25.A slip of tongue cannot be recalled. 或者說(shuō):One word once let go can not be recalled.
26.You cannot make filet mignon out of chopped liver. Something with good quality can not be made with cheap material. 27.a chip off(或 of)the old block. 這與另外兩句諺語(yǔ)相似:「Like father, like son.」(相貌性格等酷似父親的兒子)「As the old cock crows, so crow the young.」(老公雞在叫,小公雞也跟著叫)(動(dòng)詞時(shí)態(tài):crow, crowed(或crew), crowed)因?yàn)楹⒆佣喟胧悄7赂改傅模–hildren generally imitate their parents.)(多半指男性)這就是咱們所謂的「有其父必有其子」。
28.Make hay while the sun shines. 就是「行事要趁機(jī)會(huì)好」(make the most of an opportunity)。
29.Fools rush in where angels fear to tread. (Don’t jump without thinking.)30.Judge not lest you be judged. (Don’t criticize others.) (If you criticize others, you’ll expect others to criticize you!)
It(money)talks all languages.(它會(huì)說(shuō)多種語(yǔ)言),也就是說(shuō):money is power.或是說(shuō):Money makes the man.If you have money, even a fool is a master.(金錢(qián)改變一個(gè)人,假如你有錢(qián),即使是傻瓜,也會(huì)變成主人。) (現(xiàn)代許多人倒認(rèn)為「錢(qián)不是一切」)「money is not everything.」
15.Nice guys finish last. Nice(honest)people get short end of stick.(get short end of stick=not treated fairly);也有老外說(shuō):(You)never give a sucker an even break.(你從不給老實(shí)人公平待遇)(even break=fair dial;sucker是指老實(shí)或易受騙的人),就是「好人受欺」。
16.A small spark makes a great fire.這與另一句警語(yǔ):「It takes one small spark to start a forest fire.」 A trifle may, often cause great disaster.(小事也會(huì)引起大災(zāi)難)。
17.Out of sight, out of mind! If you don’t see it, you just forget about it.18.Treat others as you want to be treated. 或者說(shuō):Treat others as you want others to treat you,也可以說(shuō):Do unto others as you would have others(them)do unto you.(unto 是古體的介系詞=to)這與咱們所說(shuō)的「己所不欲,勿施於人」意思相似。
19.There is no place like home. 還有其他說(shuō)法:East, West, home is best或Home, sweet home!或是No place is as desirable as home.

英語(yǔ)中有趣的人名俗語(yǔ) 1.a cup of Joe 一杯咖啡.A cup of Joe也就是a cup of coffee。
An average Joe refers to someone who is just like everyone else;a normal person.'Average' means 'in the middle' or 'not extreme', and 'Joe' is a common male name.So 'average Joe' refers to a man who is not extremely different from everyone else.
I wonder why a handsome man like Jeff married such a plain Jane. not know a person from Adam不知(某人)模樣如何,與(某人)素不相識(shí). 因?yàn)閬啴?dāng)非女人所生,所以沒(méi)有肚臍,是最容易辨認(rèn)的人,“not know somebody from Adam”就表示“完全不認(rèn)識(shí)某人”。
Mrs.Smith is a friend of mine, but I don’t know her husband from Adam.
5.Jack of all trades萬(wàn)事通. Jack of all trades and master of none. .not know Jack about對(duì)某事一無(wú)所知.如: I don't know Jack about fishing意思就是 I don't know anything about fishing(我對(duì)釣魚(yú)一無(wú)所知)。而I don’t know Jack的意思就是“我什么也不知道”。 Do you know Jack shit?
For Pete's sake,stop making so much noise.(哎呀,天哪! 假設(shè)你向別人道了歉,他還沒(méi)完沒(méi)了,這時(shí)你可以說(shuō):I said I was sorry.What else do you want me to do, for Pete's sake?(我已經(jīng)說(shuō)對(duì)不起了,拜托,你還想叫我怎樣啊?)9.a doubting Thomas生性多疑的人. I need your John Hancock.
