For generations, the Nganyi people of western Kenya have served as rainmakers, helping local communities decide when best to prepare their land and sow their seeds.By observing subtle changes in nature that would be unnoticeable to most people-in air currents, the flowering and shedding of leaves of certain trees, the behaviour of ants, bird songs, etc-they have been able to interpret weather patterns and provide valuable advice. What difficulty do local rainmakers face in making weather predictions?

But the irregular weather patterns brought by climate change mean the rainmakers can no longer use those sighs to make their predictions. And they don’t have access to the technologies available to meteorologists(氣象學(xué)家).?Climate change has come on so fast.People don’t know how to adapt or what to plant,?says Obedi Osoce, a traditional weatherman.?Our traditional crops are disappearing because they cannot handle the new conditions. We need new strategies to handle climate change.”

Now a British-Canadian project is doing just that, linking the rainmakers with government meteorologists. The two groups get together each season and produce an agreed forecast to be spread using a variety of methods suited to communities where many cannot read or write-through ceremonies, public meetings and person-to person comma-kation.Both parties are pleased with the collaboration.? I think the two sciences equally valid. We are marrying our energies to help people better,? says Mr.Onunga, a Nganyi community elder involved in the project.‘The results have been surprisingly good-the community agreed that the forecast was accurate,? says Gilbert Ouma, a lecturer at the University of Nairobi.?Through this project we hope to learn what it is that we can share together to live today and to adapt to tomorrow,?says Professor Laban Ogallo, leader of the Nganyi project.36.Which of the following has been used by traditional Nganyi rainmakers in weather prediction?

A.Plant seeds B.Dog harks C.Bird songs D.Ocean currents

37.What difficulty do local rainmakers face in making weather predictions? they don’t have access to the technologies available to meteorologists

A.They cannot find an effective way to deliver messages.B.They lack modern technologies to cope with climate change.C.They cannot get financial support from the local government.D.They lack the facilities to stop traditional crops from disappearing.38.How do people involved in the British-Canadian project feel about their cooperation?

A.Satisfied B.Confused C.Hopeful D.Regretful

39.Which statement best expresses the main idea of the passage?

A.A British-Canadian project has been carried out to solve farming problems.B.The Nganyi people have made weather forecasts by observing changes in nature.C.New technologies have replaced traditional methods in weather prediction in Kenya.D.Scientists and Kenyan rainmakers work together in a joint weather prediction project.Passage Two

?No matter how quiet the baby is, it’s an obvious distraction(分心的事),?says Tory Johnson, the chief executive of Women for Hire, a New York City-based recruiting film.No one has complained yet.Even if somebody did, it wouldn’t matter to Mickey McManus, Maya’s CEO and president, who argues that the policy builds loyalty and helps parents shift back into work mode.As part of its balancing act, Maya shares up to 20% of quarterly profits with its employees. However, the size of those checks might be up in the air at the moment. The firm once laid off five workers and it is now considering 4-day weeks to avoid more layoffs.40.Which of the following is true about Maya Design?

Harry Potter fans will instantly recognize the snowy owl as Harry’s famous companies, Hedwig, but these beautiful owls are easily recognizable not for their magical associations, but for their large size and striking while feathers.Snowy owls are, in fact, the only white owl, and they are a highly sought after species for many birdwatchers to add to their life lists.Foods: Small mammals, birds, fish.Habitat and Migration: Snowy owls are found in far northern latitudes including tundra, a vast treeless frozen region in the Arctic.Their breeding grounds(繁殖地)are in the Arctic tundra, and they migrate south throughout Canada during the winter. In exceptionally server winters or when food supplies are searce, these owls can appear much further south than their normal range. While principally a North American bird, they can also migrate to the northern areas of Europe an Asia.Behaviour: Snowy owls, like all owls, are powerful animal bunters that are active mostly at night but can bunt and feed during the day, especially when food supplies are low. These owls will rest on the ground or on rocks, stumps and other low favorable points.Males can be fierce when defending the nest, and both genders will also perform an “injured bird” act to tempt animal invaders to go away from the nest.Reproduction: Snowy owls may incubate(孵卵)3-10 eggs for 30-34 days, or the incubation may be done primarily by the freak. The baby owls remain in the nest for 14-21 days and will attempt their first flight when they are 42-58 days old.Mated pairs will raise one group of young birds per year unless food supplies are inadequate and then no eggs may be produced.44、What have you learned from Paragraph 1?

We lost two superstars in 1977.Neither man’s admirers have been able to understand the success of the other one.And this tells us something of the difference between the generations that the two singers represent. There were similarities between Bing Crosby and Elvis Presley. Both reached fame while young and became very rich.Although neither one had any musical education, both developed their own musical styles, which were first criticized by the critics and later studied as new forms in the art of popular song. Both men had successful movie careers despite a total lack of acting ability. Both were creations of the microphone, which made it possible for singers with weak voices to be heard beyond the third now. With Bing the microphone was usually hidden;but Elvis brought it to the stage. The difference between the two men reflects the changing values in American life Crosby’s music was soothing(令人舒暢的), Presley’s was disturbing.Crosby was singing to wartime America. His audiences had all the disturbance they could handle in their private lives, they did not want to buy more at the record shop and the movie theater.Crosby’s admires always said how ?relaxed? and ?natural? he was. When Presley began his career, the whole country had become relaxed and easygoing. Its young people, who had no memory of trouble times, found it boring. They were hungry for excitement. They welcomed Elvis, who was certainly not the kind of young man their parents would admire.Presley was load and vulgar(粗俗的)—— and be was bringing something new and exciting. It is probably too simple to explain each man in terms of changes in the economic and political situation.Something in the culture was also changing.48、Which of the following could be inferred about Crosby and Presley?

A.They died in the same year.B.They became popular in 1977 C.They influenced each other in music D.They represented the postwar generation

51、What is most Presley to be discussed if the passage continues?

A.The political situation that the two singers faced

B.The cultural changes that the two singers experienced

C.The economic influence on the music of the two singers

D.The message that the two singers expressed in their music

Passage Five

There are millions of left-handed people in the world.A number of them got together in 1975 to form an association called Left-handers International. The purpose of the organization is to fight discrimination(particularly to jobs)and to inform the public. They want everybody to understand the left-handers are neither “strange” nor sick nor dangerous. Many studies have been made recently about hand preference in humans. They have brought interesting results. It has been found, for instance, that many more men than women are left-handed;that all children use both hands about equally until they are three years old;and that hand preference is not clearly marked until age six.Above that age, most people not only favour one particular hand but also have a favourite eye, a favourite ear and foot.We know that the left side of the body is controlled by the right side of the brain, which seems that this particular half is the seat of emotions, imagination, and of the sense of space. And, indeed, lefties in seem to be more creative than the right-handers;they also seem to be more athletic and to do better in some professions which---like sports----require a good sense of space. In a large school of architecture , it was found in 1977 that 29% of the professes and 23% of the graduating students were left-handed---while lefties represent less than 10% of the general population. Finally, left-handers may be more stubborn and impulsive(沖動的)than right-handers.And they are more likely to suffer from problems such as stuttering(口吃)and a difficulty in reading called dyslexia. The problems are more serious in left-handed persons who have been forced to favour their right hand.Doctors insist that one should never try to change a child’s hand preference.52、What does Left-handers International aim to do for left-handers?

A.To create new jobs B.To promote equality

C.To show discrimination D.To study hand preference

53、According to recent studies, when is hand preference formed?

A.Before birth B.At birth

C.At age three D.At age six

54、Compared with right-handers, left-handers______

A.are less creative B.are more easygoing

C.have a better sense of space D.do better in most professions

55、Left-handers are advised to stick to their hand preference because_____

A.it is fun and comfortable to be left-handers B.the left hand is just as good as the right hand C.it is difficult for them to switch to the right hand D.changing hand preference may cause serious problems V.Daily Conversation(15 points)

VI.Writing(25 points)

6、一網(wǎng)解析:其實(shí)此題目考察我們兩個短語的區(qū)別:can not help + doing sth忍不住做某事; can not help(to)do sth不能幫助做某事。

情態(tài)動詞+ have done?

的推測,排除A與B;should是?

所以答案是A,take。

沒有工作才去find,運(yùn)氣好的話,叫做find out;search與search for的區(qū)別,search后面家的是? We searched the whole forest(地點(diǎn))for the girl.(search的目標(biāo))。He searched his

pockets(地點(diǎn)), but found nothing。

空格處前面的this time

Change into 的change sth into

The

weather_______never been so bad in October。 C,has been so bad。

答案是A。 ;moreover(同樣不是一連詞,而且、此外);furthermore(同樣不是一連詞,此外、而且)

get it go again

Bbe able to do sth? 答案是A。

搭配:able后面接to do,而capable接of介詞。例如:she is an able teacher.(能干,但是不知道是不是專業(yè)方面)。she is an capable teacher.(專業(yè)勝任)。

parents shift back into work mode。

答案是A。

答案是A。

preference?

Passage One Perhaps the most important defining characteristic of a human being is culture. The term culture as used here is not limited to operas, paintings, and other artistic endeavors. These are seen by anthropologists(人類學(xué)家)as examples of culture: culture itself is the customary manner in which human groups learn to organize their behavior and thought in relation to their environment.Defined in this manner, culture has three principal aspects: behavioral, perceptual and material. The behavioral component refers to how people act, especially how they interact with each other. In child rearing(養(yǎng)育), for example, parents and children tend to interact in a relatively patterned fashion. Then there is the manner of perception, the ways people perceive the world. For example, parents have a limited range of ideas about how they should act, and what significance parenthood carries in the scheme of things. Finally, there is the material component of culture — the physical objects that we produce. Most of what goes into making up culture is a result of learning — modifying behavior in response to experience within an environment.Learning is practically universal among organisms. But no other organism has a greater capacity for learning than a human, or depends as much on learned behavior for its survival. While the survival of most other organisms is to some extent safeguarded by instincts, humans rely heavily on culture for their survival.People must learn how to live in a particular social and physical setting, biology playing but a minimal(最小限度的)role. The ideas and modes of behavior that constitute culture are transmitted largely by a complex system of symbols that includes language.Humans have evolved an extremely complex system of communication that is unique to our species.Without it the creation of human culture as we know it would be impossible.B 1.What is the definition of culture by anthropologists? A)Operas, paintings and may other artistic activities as a whole.B)Customary manners of behavior and thought related to the environment.C)Behavioral, perceptual and material components interacting with each other.D)The different ways people perceive the physical world.C 2.According to the passage, the behavior of making tools for producing material objects B)perceptual

The best kept secret in San Diego is waiting to offer you a delightful getaway — without leaving town.Less than three years ago, the Parisi Hotel was just an office building above the shops on the corner of Prospect Street. Now, that valuable space is an intimate luxury hotel — with several rooms overlooking the ocean. You’ll be amazed when you enter from the corner and ascend the curving staircase to the second-floor lobby. It will take you into a different world. What will you find when you enter the large contemporary lobby is a handsome and peaceful space that was designed with a hint of Tuscany in its modern Mediterranean(地中海式的)style. The lobby has a large fireplace with comfortable sofas in warm neutral colors surrounding it.You’ll feel relaxed just sitting there — with its skylight overhead letting in the morning sun.All the rooms are more like suites(套房), with large comfortable beds, beautiful baths and stylish custom-designed furnishings and art throughout. The Parisi Hotel is the perfect place for seniors because it’s quiet and restful — with only 20 rooms. You won’t find many hotels like this in the center of a tourist town. The shops are all around you.Likewise for some of the city’s best restaurants, you will never have to take your car out of the garage during your stay. And, by the way, the underground parking lot at the Parisi Hotel is free for hotel guests.Once you stay at this little gem(珍品), you’ll want to return again and again.I know we do.It’s a perfect place for seniors.Rates for standard suites begin at $275.You can call the hotel for reservation at(858)454-1513.The Parisi Hotel is located at 1111 Prospect St.right across from La Valencia.C 6.The Parisi Hotel is described as _________.A)a luxury hotel with comfortable facilities B)a large hotel famous for its rooms facing the ocean C)a good place for escaping away from the noisy city D)a tourist attraction full of amazing corners D 7.When you enter the lobby, you will find that ________.A)it is decorated with Mediterranean furniture B)the walls are painted in warm neutral bright colors C)there is a large fireplace burning all the time D)sunlight comes through the window in the sloping roof D 8.Why is the Parisi Hotel suitable for old people? Sample Test Part I Reading Comprehension(35 minutes,40 points)Directions: There are four reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A),B),C)and D).After you read a passage you should decide on the best choice and then mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage One Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage.A fire drill is, to put it mildly, an inconvenient exercise at the best of times.A fire drill at 2:00 in the morning in terrible weather conditions, like the one we had on Thursday night and Friday morning last, is incomparably more inconvenient. This is why writing this note to thank you all most sincerely for your excellent co-operation and the spirit with which you endured the inconvenience.A fire drill is not an idle exercise. It is an extremely serious one and can, in fact, save lives in the long run.Last week’ fire drill has already reyealed a number of important things regarding fire precautions in the Hall. For instance, there seem to exit a number of “deaf spots” in the Hall, namely, the two rooms in Purser House and some rooms in the Bottom corridor.I have no reason to doubt that residents from these areas could not hear the alarm.I shall request an immediate examination of this problem.I should, also, remind you that it is a requirement that fire drills should be regularly carried out(at least two in every one year)and each resident should be made fully aware of this and obliged to take part. All residents must take fire precautions with the seriousness they deserve.Failure to do so can result bin fines and expulsion(驅(qū)逐)from the Hall.Thank you again for your co-operation.1.The last fire drill caused much more inconvenience because_________.A)it was in bad weather B)there were “deaf spots” C)a big fire started D)it was at the weekend 2.The phrase “in the long run”(L.2,Part.2)means_________.A)effectively B)endlessly C)eventually D)efficiently 3.Some people did not make their appearance at the last drill because_______.A)they were deaf B)they could not hear the alarm C)nobody waked them up D)they refused to leave their rooms 4.Afire drill is extremely important according to the writer for_________.A)it is a good physical exercise B)it cultivates people’s endurance C)it is a legal requirement D)it can save lives in case of a fire 5.Which of the following was NOT stated by the author? A)A fire drill is very important and useful.B)The last fire drill received inactive co-operation from the residents.C)Those who do not take fire precautions will be fined and driven out.D)It has been made a rule that fire drills will be performed regularly.Passage Two Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage Accidents are caused;they don’t just happen. The reason may be easy to see: a shelf out of reach, a patch of ice on the misfortune—frustration, tiredness or just bad temper—that show what the accident really is, a sort of attack on oneself.Road accidents, for example, happen frequently after a family quarrel, and we all know people who are accident-prone, so often at odds with themselves and the world that they seem to cause accidents for themselves and others.By definition, an accident is something you can not predict or avoid, and the idea which used to be current, that the majority of road accidents are caused by a minority of criminally careless drivers, is not supported by insurance statistics. These show that most accidents involve ordinary motorists in a moments of carelessness or thoughtlessness. It is not always clear, either, what sort of conditions make people more likely to have an accident. For instance, the law requires all factories to take safety precautions and most companies have safety committees to make sure the regulations are observed, but still, every day in Britain, some fifty thousand men and women are injured from work due to accidents. These accidents are largely the result of human error or misjudgment—noise and fatigue, boredom or worry are possible factors which contribute to this.Doctors who work in factories have found that those who drink too much, usually people who have a high anxiety level, run three times the normal risk of accidents at work.6.The passage suggests that________.A)Accidents are usually caused by psychological factors.B)Accidents mostly result from slippery roads.C)Drinkers run three times the normal risk of accidents in factories.D)About 50 000people lose their lives at work in Britain every day.7.Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a factor of accidents? A)Mood.B)Tiredness.C)Carelessness D)Weather 8.The word “accidents-prone”(L.2 Para.2)means________.A)likely to have accidentsB)injured in accidents C)possible to die in accidents D)responsible for road accidents 9.What can we infer about the author’ opinion of accidents? A)Safety precautions are of little use in accidents.B)Many accidents can and should be avoided.C)Factory accidents , unlike road accidents, are inevitable.D)Most road accidents are caused by just a few careless drivers.10.The best title for the passage would be __________.A)Accidents and Anxiety B)How to Deal with Accidents on Road and in Factories C)Human Factors in Accidents D)How to Prevent Accidents on Road and in Factories Passage Three Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage. Is language, like food, a basic human need? Judging from the result of the violent experiment by a German King, Frederick II, in the 13th century, it may be.Hoping to discover what language a child would speak if he heard no mother tongue, he told the nurses to keep silent. All the infants died before the first year. But clearly there was more than language deprivation here. What was missing was good mothering.Without good mothering, in the first year of life especially, the capacity to survive is seriously affected.Today no much violent deprivation exists as that by Frederick II.Nevertheless, some children are still backward in speaking. Most often the reason for this is that the mother is insensitive to the signals of the infant, whose brain is programmed to map up language rapidly. There are critical times, it seems, when children learn more readily. If these sensitive periods are neglected, the ideal time for acquiring language skills passes and they might never be learned so easily again.Linguists(語言學(xué)家)suggest that speech stages are reached in a fixed sequence and at a constant age, but there are cases where speech has started late in a child who eventually turns out to be of high IQ.Recent evidence suggests that an infant is born with the capacity to speak. What is special about Man’s brain compared with that of the monkey, is the complex system which enables a child to connect the sight and feel of , say, a teddy-bear(玩具熊)with the sound pattern “teddy-bear”.But speech has to be stimulated, and this depends on interaction between the mother and the child, where the mother recognizes the signals in the child’s babbling(牙牙學(xué)語), grasping, crying, smiling, and responds to them.Insensitivity of the mother to these signals dulls the interaction because the child gets discouraged and sends out only the obvious signals.Sensitivity to the child’s non-verbal signals is essential to the growth and development language.11.Frederick II’s experiment was violent because_________.A)he wanted to prove children are born with ability to speak B)he ignored the importance of mothering to the infant C)he was unkind to the nurse D)he wanted his nurses to say no mother tongue 12.The reason some children are backward in speaking today that_________.A)their mothers do not respond to their attempts to speak B)their mothers are not intelligent enough to help them C)they do not listen carefully to their mothers D)their brains have to absorb too much language at once.13.By “critical times” in Paragraph 3 the author means__________.A)difficult periods in the child’s life

B)moments when the child becomes critical to its mother C)important stages in the child’s development D)times when mothers often neglect their children 14.Which of the following in NOT implied in the passage? A)Ability to learn to speak a language is inborn in man B)Children do not need to be encouraged to learn to speak C)Early language starters are not necessarily highly intelligent D)Most children learn their language in definite stages 15.If the mother does not respond to her child’s signals_________.A)the child will never be able to speak properly B)the child will stop giving out signals C)the child will invent a language of his own D)the child will make little effort to speak Passage Four Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage.Americans who remember “the good old days” are not alone in complaining about the educational system in this country.Immigrants(移民)complain ,too.Lately a German friend was filled with anger when he learned that the mathematics test given to his son on his first day as a college freshman included multiplication and division.Japanese businessmen in Los Angeles send their children to private schools staffed by teachers imported from Japan to learn mathematics at Japanese levels, generally considered at least a year more advanced than the level here. But I wonder: If American education is so poor, why is it that this is still the country of innovation(創(chuàng)新)? When I was 12 in Indonesia, I had to memorize the name of all the world’s major cities, from Kabul to Karachi. At the same age, my son, who was brought up by a Californian, thought that Buenos Aires was Spanish for good food. However, unlike children of his age in Asia and Europe, my son had studied creative geography. When he was only 6, he drew a map of the route that he traveled to get to school, including the streets, the traffic signs and the houses that he passed.Dissatisfied American parents forget that in this country their children are able to experiment freely with ideas;without this they will not really be able to think or to believe in themselves.Critics of American education cannot grasp one thing: freedom.America, I think, is the only country that extends even to children the license to freely speak, write and be creative. Our public education certainly is not perfect, but it is a great deal better than any other.I think I have found the answer to my question.16.From the text we learn that_________.A)both Americans and immigrants are dissatisfied with the quality of American education B)the author shares the general idea that American education is worse than education in many other countries C)Japanese schools in America require their American teachers to teach mathematics at Japanese levels D)the author’s German friend was a little displeased because the mathematics test for his son was too easy.17.Which of the following is NOT true? A)The author most probably was an immigrant from Asia and received some school education there.B)Buenos Aires must be the name of a city, as are Kabul and Karachi.C)Children in other countries are not likely to learn creative geography.D)The knowledge of geography of the author’s son shows that American education is poor.18.Which of the following can be inferred from the passage? A)If children are not allowed to experiment freely with ideas they won’t grow up independent and creative.B)Most Americans think the present American educational system is not as good as it used to be.C)Private schools run by Japanese businessmen maintain a higher level than American public schools.D)Americans are more innovative than other people in the world.19.In the last paragraph the author says, “I have found the answer to my question.” What is the question?

A)Is Japanese education better than American education? B)Why do Japanese businessmen send their children to Japanese-staffed schools? C)Why was my son not taught enough geographic knowledge? How can he have enough energy to overcome all the difficulties on his way towards success? Only with a sound body may one get a chance to enjoy the better life provided by his wealth because health ensure wealth but not vice versa. Therefore, health is the basis for attaining wealth.Even if one is born into a rich family, wealth alone cannot make him happiness.Imagine a rich man who can do nothing but stay in bed.How can he enjoy his life? What can his money do for him? So long as one is healthy, there are always chances for him to attain everything including wealth.

Passage Two

In the past, people who graduated from college felt proud of their academic achievements and confident that their degree would help them to find a good job. However, in the past four years the job market has changed dramatically. This year’s college graduates are facing one of the worst job markets. For example, Ryan Stewart, a graduate of san Jose State University, got a degree in religious studies, but he has not gotten any job offers. He points out that many people already working are getting laid off and don’t have jobs, so it’s even harder for new college graduates to find jobs.Four years ago, the future looked bright for his class of 2006.There were many high-tech(“dotcom”)job opportunities, graduates received many job offers, and they were able to get jobs with high salaries and benefits such as health insurance and paid vacations. However, “Times have changed. It’s a new market.” according to an officer of the university. The officer says students who do find jobs started preparing two years ago. They worked during summer vacations, they have had several short-time jobs, and they majored in fields that are still paying well, such as accounting or nursing.Even teaching is not a secure profession now.Ryan Stewart wanted to be a teacher, but instead he will probably go back to school in order to become a college teacher. He thinks college teaching could be a good career even in a bad economy. In conclusion, these days a college degree does not automatically lead to a good job with a high salary. Some students can only hope that the value of their degree will increase in the future.1.What did a college degree mean to people in the past?

Passage Four

It is still sometimes difficult to understand why those between ages 10 and 18 would endanger their lives by joining armed forces or rebel groups and become fighting soldiers. The recently published book, Young Soldier, Why They Choose to Fight By Rachel Brett and Irma Specht, tries to find an answer. There is no doubt that children fight in most armed conflicts today. While international attention focuses largely on those who are forced into battles, thousands more enlist(應(yīng)征入伍)voluntarily. In an attempt to to understand the young who take up arms, Brett and Specht interviewed 53 boy and girl soldiers and ex-soldiers from around the world, Afghanistan , Colombia, the Republic of the Congo for example. All interviewees were involved with armed forces or armed groups before the age of 18 and all classified themselves as volunteers. What these two field officers heard is “I joined involuntarily-if you have nothing, you volunteer for the army”.Other reasons young people gave are self-defense, revenge, poverty, and unemployment. But while it is common knowledge that most child soldiers come from poor and disadvantaged backgrounds, Young Soldiers shows that the issue is far more complex. Many poor children do not join the army. The environmental, educational, social, cultural, and highly personal factors determine whether someone decide to join up or not.The battlefield is not a place for children. One young soldier described being there as “too sad an experience”.The authors hope that by understanding why teenagers join up, those child soldiers should know how to discourage others from the same tragedy.1.Young Soldiers, Why They Choose to Fight is ______.A.a book B.a magazine C.a news report D.a TV program

Passage Five

It’s interesting that technology often works as a servant for us, yet frequently we become a servant to it.E-mail is a useful tool but many feel controlled by this new vehicle. The average businessperson is getting about 80-e-mails per day and many feel that about 80% of the messages in their “In Box” are of little or no value. So, I have four suggestions to help you to become better at “Easing E-mail”.1.Get off the lists. The best way to deal with a problem is to never have it.If you are receiving a lot of unwanted e-mails, ask to be removed from the various lists. This would include your inclusion in unwanted “cc” lists.2.“Unlisted address”.Just like getting an “unlisted” telephone number that you share only with those whom you want to give direct access, you might want to get a separate e-mail address only for the important communications you wish to receive.3.Check it once or twice per day. Many I speak with are becoming chained to their email server, monitoring incoming email on a continuous basis.Maybe this is because e-mail creates its own sense of urgency, but most of the communications are not all that urgent.I respond to them a couple of times per day.4.Deal with it.As you open each e-mail do one of the following:

a.If it requires a quick response, respond to it and delete it.b.If it requires a response but is not the best use of your time, try to find someone else to do it.c.If it is going to take any serious amount of time to respond, schedule it for action in your Day Planner and then download the message, save it, or print it out for future action.I personally receive approximately 250 e-mails per day and by practicing the suggestions above, I can handle that volume in about an hour, taking advantage of this fantastic tool but not being controlled by it to the distraction of more important tasks in my day.1.The passage is about ______.A.how to check e-mails

B.how to collect e-mails

C.how to deal with your daily e-mails

D.how to deal with 80% valueless e-mails

2.If you get unwanted e-mails, the best you can do is to______.A.make a list of them

B.put them into “cc” lists

C.send them to a special address

D.delete them from different lists

3.For the important communications, the writer suggests that you______.A.have a direct access for them

B.have several e-mail servers for them

C.get an unlisted phone number for them

D.get a special e-mail address for them

4.To avoid being chained by the coming e-mails, what you can do is to ______.A.respond urgent ones only

Passage Six

During the Christmas shopping rush in London, the interesting story was reported of a tramp who, apparently though no fault of his own, found himself locked in a well-known chain store late on Christmas Eve.No doubt the store was crowded with last-minute Christmas shoppers and the staff were dead beat and longing to get home.Probably all the proper security checks were made before the store was locked and they left to enjoy the three-day holiday untroubled by customers desperate to get last-minute Christmas presents. However ridiculous that may be, our tramp found himself alone in the store and decided to make the best of it.There was food, drink, bedding and camping equipment, of which he made good use. There must also have been television sets and radios.Though it was not reported if he took advantages of these facilities, when the shop reopened he was discovered in bed with a large number of empty bottles beside him.He seem to have been a man of good humor as indeed tramps very commonly are.Everyone else was enjoying Christmas, so he saw no good reason why he should not do the same.He yielded himself cheerfully, and was taken by the police.Perhaps he had had a better Christmas than usual. He was sent to prison for seven days. The judge awarded no compensation to the chain store for the food and drink our tramp had consumed. They had, in his opinion, already received valuable free publicity from the story revealed in the newspaper and on television.Perhaps the judge had had a good Christmas, too.1.The tramp was locked in the store ______.A.for 7 days B.on purpose C.by accident D.for security reasons

Passage Seven

If you want to stay young, sit down and have a good think. This is the research result of professor Faulkner, who says that most of our brains are not getting enough exercise and as a result, we are ageing unnecessarily soon.Professor Faulkner wanted to find out why healthy farmers in northern Japan appeared to be losing their ability to think and to reason at a relatively early age, and how the process of ageing could be slow down.He set about measuring brain volumes of a thousand people of different ages and occupations.Computer technology enabled him to obtain precise measurements of the volume of the front and side sections of the brain, which relate to intelligence and emotion, and determine the human character.Contraction of front and side partswas observed in some subjects in their thirties, but it was still not evident in some sixty-and seventy-year-olds.Faulkner concluded from his tests that there is a simple way to slow the contractionand after that I don’t remember any more.”

Passage Nine

Long after the 1998 World Cup was won, disappointed fans were still cursing the disputed refereeing(裁判)decisions that denied victory to their team.A researcher was appointed to study the performance of some top referees. The researcher organized an experimental tournament(錦標(biāo)賽)involving four youth teams. Each match lasted an hour divided into three periods of 20 minutes during which different referees were in charge.Observers noted down the referees’ errors, of which there were 61 over the tournament.Converted to a standard match of 90 minutes, each referee made almost 23 mistakes, a remarkable high number. The researcher then studied the videotapes to analyse the matches in detail.Surprisingly, he found that errors were more likely when the referees were close to the incident. When the officials got it right, they were, on average, 17 meters away from the action. The average distance in the case of errors was 12 meters. The research shows the optimum(最佳的)distance is about 20 meters. There also seemed to be an optimum speed.Correct decisions came when the referees were moving at a speed of about 2 meters per second. The average speed for errors was 4 meters per second. If FIFA, football’s international ruling body, wants to improve the standard of refereeing at the next World Cup, it should encourage referees to keep their eyes on the action from a distance, rather than rushing to keep up with the ball, the researcher argues. He also says that FIFA’ s insistence that referees should retire at age 45 may be misguided. If keeping up with the action is not so important, their physical condition is less critical.1.The experiment conducted by the researcher was meant to ______.A.set a standard for football refereeing

B.reexamine the rules for football refereeing

C.analyse the causes of errors made by football referees

D.review the decisions of referees at the 1998 World Cup

B.the more slowly the referee runs the more likely will errors occur

C.the farther the referees is from the incident the fewer the errors

D.errors are more likely when a referee keeps close to the ball

4.The word “official”(Line2,Para.4)most probably refers to ______.A.the researchers involved in the experiment

B.the referees of the football tournament

C.the observers at the site of the experiment

“I love you, Bob.” “I love you, too, Nancy.” It was 2 a.m.and I was hearing my parents’ voices through the thin wall separating my bedroom from theirs.Their loving words were sweet, touching-and surprising. My parents married on September 14, 1940, after a brief dating. She was nearing 30 and knew it was time to start a family. The handsome, well-educated man who came by the office where she worked looked like a good bet.He was attracted by her figure, her blue eyes. The romance didn’t last long.Seeds of difference grew almost immediately. She liked to travel;he hated the thought. He loved golf;she did not.He was a Republican, she a loyal Democrat. They fought at the bridge table, at the dinner table, over money, over the perceived shortcomings of their respective in-laws.There was a hope that they would change once they retired, and the angry winds did calm somewhat, but what remained changed itself into bright, hard bitterness.“I always thought we’d ?” my mother would begin, before launching into a precise listing of my father’s faults. The complaints were recited so often, I can repeat them by heart today. As he listened, my father would say angry threats and curses in a low voice. It wasn’t the happiest marriage, but as their 60th anniversary approached, my sister and I decided to throw a party.Sixty years was a long time, after all;why not try to make the best of things? Passage Twelve

What can you do to recall your dreams more often and interpret them more clearly? The experts offer these suggestions:

Develop an idea. Before you go to sleep, consciously think about a topic or a person you’d like to dream about.Raise a question that’s troubling you and see how your dream responds to it.Keep track.Next to your bed, place a pen and some paper, or a tape recorder or laptop, to record your dreams as soon as you wake up.Try to wake up naturally, without the help of an alarm clock or barking dog that can interrupt

your dream cycle. If your schedule doesn’t allow you to sleep in during the week, begin your dream journey on a weekend or during a vacation.Wake up slowly. For the first moment after you wake up, lie still and keep your eyes closed, because your dream may be connected to your body position while you slept.Try to recall the dream and then store it in your memory by giving it a name like “Late for an exam” or “My Date with Ashley Judd”.When you rise, immediately write down as many images, feelings and impressions as you can.Connect the dots.To better interpret your dreams, try to make connections between you recalled dreams and recent events.Do you recognize people from the present or past? Can you detect any themes from the dream? Look for patterns over several dreams that might help explain an individual dream.Change the outcome. If you have nightmares happening again and again that make it difficult to sleep, try to change the endings.Once you wake up from a bad dream, imagine a change in the action to create a more positive outcome. If you are trapped, try to fly.In your dream, you can do what you want!
