It is only a shiny, yellow metal, but it is one of the most valuable metals on earth.Since the beginning of time, men have looked for this extremely valuable item, gold.Gold is soft and easy to form into different objects. If it gets wet, it does not rust like iron or other metals.Acids do not change it.One important reason that gold is so valuable is that it is scarce.Due to its softness, gold must be combined with other metals to harden it and give it strength.By hardening gold, people can then make coins and jewelry with it.Metals commonly mixed with gold are nickel, platinum, and copper.Gold jewelry bears a number and the letter K.The K means karat(carat), which is a measure of the amount of pure gold in the jewelry.Pure gold is 24K.Therefore, a necklace which is 14K is fourteen parts gold and ten parts other metal. Many countries utilize gold for certain coins, but this practice is not as common now as it once was.The United States, for instance, stopped making gold coins in 1933.56.Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?

Passage 2 Questions 61—65 are based on the following passage
A sustainable transportation system is one that is safe? capable and friendly to the environment.Sustainable transportation is about combining economic, social and environmental factors into decisions that affect transportation activity. In economic aspect, we need a transportation system that is efficient. In social aspect, our transportation system must be safe and easy to be reached. In addition, we need a transportation system that respects the na
tural environment. It is not always easy to balance these three factors but there are also win-win-win opportunities.Sustainable transportation is important.Although transportation brings many economic and social benefits, the movement of people and goods can have important influences on the environment. These influences can in turn have social and economic consequences.Sustainable transportation calls for ensuring that the environment is considered along with economic and social considerations in transportation decision-making.Environmental influences of transportation include air and water pollution, greenhouse effects, and the use of land and other natural resources, A range of transportation activities contribute to these pressures, including the construction of roads> the production, operation, and throwing away of vehicles} and the supply of energy and fuel.A major challenge of sustainable transportation is to control or prevent air pollution and greenhouse effects.61.What is the main idea of the passage?

According to psychologists, an emotion is aroused when a man or animal views something as either bad or good. When a person feels like running away from something he thinks will hurt him? we call this emotion fear.If the person wants to remove the danger by attacking it< we call the emotion anger. The emotions of joy and love are aroused when we think something can help us.An emotion does not have to be created by something in the outside world. It can be created by a person’s thoughts.Everyone has emotions. Many psychologists believe that infants are born without emotions. They believe children learn emotions just as they learn to read and write.A growing child not only learns his emotions but learns how to act in certain situations because of an emotion.Psychologists think that there are two types of emotions: positive and negative
.Positive emotions include love, liking, joy, delight and hope. They are aroused by something that appeals to a person.Negative emotions make a person unhappy or dissatisfied. They include anger, fear, despair, sadness and disgust. In growing up, a person learns to cope with the negative emotions in order to be happy.Emotions may be weak or strong. Some strong emotions are so unpleasant that a person will try any means to escape from them.In order to feel happy, the person may choose unusual ways to avoid the emotion.Strong emotions can make it hard to think and to solve problems. They may prevent a person from learning or paying attention to what he is doing. For example, a student taking an examination may be so worried about failing that he cannot think properly. The worry drains valuable mental energy he needs for the examination.66.We learn from the passage that an emotion is created by something _____.A.one thinks bad or good

Passage 4 Questions 71—75 are based on the following passage
A gloomy afternoon saw me taking my routine path through that construction site. For the walker’s convenience, a set of stone steps had been built* which were fairly steep. That was the place I found myself behind a husband and wife climbing up the steps with each other’s support. The couple seemed to be farmers in their forties. The wife in a red coat was walking with a stick, an empty trouser leg swaying below. With one hand on his shoulder, she leaned almost entirely on her husband* who carefully kept balance with her and carried her other stick. They limped(6W)their way upward with great difficulty. My curiosity urged me to overtake them and look back over my shoulder secretly. The glance sent a shiver through me? which produced a sensation I had never experienced before. The husband himself was also disabled —blind in both eyes! What struck me even more was the smile they both wore on their faces, such a happy smile as could only be seen from brides and bridegrooms. With f
ew words between them, they smilingly helped each other struggle upwards. Then I noticed there were patches on their clothes, and their cloth shoes were homemade, worn-out but tidy. How could such sweet smiles reconcile with the patched clothing or the physical handicap? I got quite puzzled. When they advanced far ahead I still couldn’ t tear my eyes away from them, I was moved and my heart filled with admiration. At that moment I suddenly realized how superficial my idea of happiness had been!To me it had always been associated with wealth, fame and power, the poor and the lowly having no share of it.However, happiness can be found in very ordinary life.I witnessed it on the weather-beaten faces of the husband and wife who had shared happiness and misfortune together. There is always happiness when there is an unfailing mutual support between two persons in love.-

Traveling by Train
Traveling by train has a lot of advantages. For example, we can enjoy seeing beautiful scenery outside the window. We can enjoy talking with new friends on the train, sharing fresh ideas with each other and getting to know each other better. What’s more, traveling by train is comparatively cheap and convenient. On the other hand, there are disadvantages for traveling by train. In most cases the crowded train makes us uncomfortable.Sometimes it is rather difficult to get a train ticket. As far as I am concerned, I prefer to travel by train. The reason is that I can spend less money and get in close touch with ordinary people on the train

Passage Four
The energy which the
sun radiates goes in every direction ,and only a minute part of it falls on the
earth.Even so , it represents power of about 5,000,000 horsepower(馬力)per square mile per day;the sun gives us as much energy every minute as mankind utilizes in a year.At present , we use this energy indirectly , and it is our final
source of power.Coal represents the chemical action of the sun on green plants thousands of years ago.Water power results from the rain formed by vapor which comes from the evaporation of water under the sunshine.Even windmills operate because of air currents set in motion by the different heating effects of the sun in different places. Some day ,through chemistry or some type of solar engine , we shall harness this great source of energy more directly.Already a scientist has worked out an engine , surprisingly efficient , in which the sun’s rays are concentrated through mirrors on a rube of water to create steam.66.How much energy
given off by the sun reaches the earth? A.100% but indirectly B.5% C.50%
D.only a very tiny amount
67.The reason why all the solar energy falling on the earth can’t be utilized is that ____.A.only a
very small part is available B.the sun is too distant from the earth C.it takes thousands if
years for this energy to be stored up in coal and oil D.our scientific knowledge is not sufficient
68.Which of the following statements is NOT true ? A.Even windmill’s action depends on the sun
B.The sun produces enormous energy for man to make use of..C.Some day man will be able to utilize
100% of the solar energy that gets to the earth.D.The sun produces different heating effects in different places.69.In order to support this argument , the writer gives the example that____.A.a machine using
solar energy efficiently has already been developed
B.the sun is our final source of power C.man uses
only a tiny part of the sun’s energy D.the part of
the sun’s energy we use is used indirectly 70.This
