書信一般分為私人信函和正式信函,書信有以下幾種:邀請信、感謝信、道歉信、求職信、投訴信等,不同形式的書信對信的要求也不同。
㈠書信的格式
英文信件由七個部分組成:信頭(heading)收信人的姓名和地址(inside name and address)稱呼(Salutation)正文(Body of the Letter)結束語(Complimentary Closure)署名(signature)附言(Postscript)
⒈信頭
信頭是指發信人的地址和日期。一般情況下,發信人只需把自己的地址寫在信的右上角,離開信紙的頂頭一英寸處,占兩三行即可。其順序是先寫地址,地址由小到大,即門牌號——街名-------城市--------省份-------國名如:38West Road,Washington,D.C,USA;日期要寫在地址的下方如:4 May 2002/May 4 ,2002/May 4,2002
2.收信人的姓名和地址
一般事務性信件或較生疏的朋友之間的信件,要寫上是收信人的地址和姓名,而在極為熟悉的朋友之間可以略去。這一項要寫在日期的 下一行的左上角,收信人的姓名寫一行,收信人的地址占兩行或三行,上下對齊。在姓名前一定要加稱呼,對普通男子用Mr.,對未婚女子用Miss,對已婚女子用Mrs.,對婚姻狀況不明的女子用Ms.對教授用Prof.對博士、醫生用Dr
3.稱呼
稱呼是信文開頭的稱呼,其后一般加逗號。

正文是信的主體部分,也就是信的內容正文應在稱呼的下一行開始,征文的寫法也有一定規律,一般是:開頭帶有寒暄語;正文寫事情;收尾有寒暄客氣的套語
