我們再來看一下四六級考試中的段落結構問題。四六級作文一般要求寫三段，并且要求超過100詞，因此每一段有三五句話就可以了。雖然字數少，但是段落總體的質量取決于一定的構思和組織能力，必須要在每一段落里有條理地、有依據地表達一個中心思想。段落的結構應當符合一定的模式和具有某些基本特征，并遵循一定的發展方向。段落的條理關鍵在于掌握主題句和擴展句的關系，這樣的條理對議論文尤其重要。一個段落在結構上有三個主要的組成部分：主題句(topic sentence)、擴展句(supporting sentence)和結尾句(conclusion)，其中結尾句并不是絕對要求的。這幾個句子時相互關聯的，其中主題句是表達段落主題的句子，它闡明一個段落的中心思想，是段落的核心，段落中的其他各句子都與它緊密相連并圍繞它展開。英語寫作中每一個段落只能有一個中心思想，并且要由一個主題句提出。中心思想提出后，作者接下來的任務就是解釋或者說明這個中心思想，擴展句起的就是這個作用。這幾個句子包括證據（evidence）、事例(examples)或者是邏輯論證（further arguments）。

主題句要由概括性，擴展句要具體。主題句是起提示作用的，因此它要具備一定的概括性，不能太具體。而擴展句的功能是詳細解釋和論證，因此必須要具體。例如：Each program will focus on a particular friend who can be either a celebrity or an everyday person.這句話是說一個電視節目的特點：每次專注于一個人物，而這個人可能有名氣，也可能知識一般人。這句話很具體，適合做擴展句。“Friend” is a very interesting talk show.這句話就可以當主題句。這句話的意思很完整，但它沒有說訪談節目為什么有意思。具體的原因應該用擴展句去說明。
