可能是由于我對英語學(xué)習(xí)一直懷著巨大的熱情，同時成績也不錯的緣故吧，從中學(xué)起我就成了各種英語比賽的常客，尤其在大學(xué)階段，我有幸兩次參加全國性的英語賽事。如今，當(dāng)時比賽中扣人心弦的種種情形已漸漸被時間沖淡，只在偶然間會被重新記起。然而備戰(zhàn)的過程卻給我留下了許多值得回味的東西，它在潛移默化中影響甚至是改變著我的生活。

北外—青春的課堂

如果有人問我，大學(xué)時代感受最深、收獲最大的是什么？我會毫不猶豫的說，是有幸得到諸多良師的指點。他們賦予我的，不但是知識上的熏陶，更是把一種人文主義的精神長久的植入我的腦海。這些感受，許多來自課堂，也有許多來自數(shù)次為參加全國比賽而進行的集訓(xùn)。

楊宇光老師是我兩次比賽的指導(dǎo)老師，1997年辯論賽時他就是我們辯論隊的主教練。印象中他永遠的治學(xué)嚴謹，永遠的紳士風(fēng)度，永遠說用詞考究的British English，有著英國式的幽默。盡管當(dāng)時比賽的辯題并不是特別深刻的學(xué)術(shù)話題，但他依然要求我們深入破題，在底下做充分的research。為了給我們拓寬思路，他屢次召集系里的熱心老師，從老教授到年輕教員，與我們一同討論。用他的話來說，只有充分剖析，寫出來的東西才能有分量——這也是北外的學(xué)術(shù)傳統(tǒng)的體現(xiàn)。為了指導(dǎo)我們，他放棄了許多休息的時間。對我們的presentation，他逐字逐句進行修改；幾乎每天他都親自安排我們的訓(xùn)練并細心點評我們發(fā)揮中的優(yōu)缺點。

到了第二年演講賽的時候，他又成為我的指導(dǎo)老師。當(dāng)時我的演講稿寫得并不順。有的學(xué)校在這種大賽時采取老師替學(xué)生捉刀的方法，準備演講部分的寫作就由老師代勞。但楊老師始終認為，這一環(huán)節(jié)也是對學(xué)生極好的鍛煉。記得那一個講稿，我重寫了兩三遍，每一遍都對選題有了更深的理解，寫得也更好一些。比賽時間迫近了，他把學(xué)院參加第一屆“21世紀杯”并獲獎的師兄徐翌成找來，說，“Let’s put our heads together, and make a final effort at it.”那天晚上，我們改稿改到深夜，終于拿出了一個令人滿意的version，稿子比我自己的更大氣，更層層深入，也更有文采。這篇文章為我的比賽增色不少，而經(jīng)過賽前的充分準備，我在回答問題部分和即興演講部分也發(fā)揮得很好，正式宣布結(jié)果前，老師走過來微笑著拍拍我的肩，說“I think we made it this time.”And we did.在我們比賽的智囊團中，還有許多老師給我留下了深刻印象。楊立民老師就是其中的一位。他是一位充滿智慧，學(xué)識淵博，又帶一點cynical的教授。年逾花甲的他，常常還穿著牛仔褲出現(xiàn)在校園里，見了我們總是樂呵呵的，玩笑不斷，常常能出驚人之語。記得準備辯

論的時候，他把辯論精辟的歸結(jié)為“an exchange of ignorance” — 因為辯論往往使雙方囿于自己一方的觀點而不能心平氣和的聆聽對方的論證。到演講比賽時，他又拿選題—摘自莎翁劇本的一句話“All the world is a stage”—借題發(fā)揮。他說，“All the world is a stage.Men and women are actors.There are comedies and tragedies.And the speech contest is a farce.”暗喻演講比賽很難避免的showcase的因素，令人捧腹不已。這就是他的風(fēng)格——在漫不經(jīng)心的評說中透出耐人尋味的哲理。他雖然如此輕描淡寫，但在每次brain storming session上，卻又能智光四射的給我們提供許多思想的火花。對他的厚積薄發(fā)，我們時常感到由衷的折服。

演講，辯論賽的備戰(zhàn)，因其能夠得到學(xué)院的最強的師資陣容的點撥，而令所有過來人受益匪淺。記得1995年復(fù)旦大學(xué)奪得華語國際大專辯論賽冠軍后出版的《獅城舌戰(zhàn)》一書中，選手們把由多位資深教授給他們準備的系列講座稱為“濃縮的精神大餐”，把思辨的訓(xùn)練稱為“把神經(jīng)繃到極細的線”的生活。而我們當(dāng)時訓(xùn)練的規(guī)模雖小，卻也能讓我們深深體會到此中的滋味，這實為人生的幸事。

有人說，人們可以忘記年年歲歲，卻無法忘記片刻與瞬間，正是這些片刻與瞬間，讓短暫成為永恒。正是與老師朝夕相處的點點滴滴，讓我領(lǐng)悟到他們的治學(xué)和做人之道。我們深諳，比賽的勝負其實并不是最重要的，它只是我們鍛煉自身素質(zhì)的一種途徑，而更值得回味的，是過程中的所得，是領(lǐng)會那種踏踏實實的做學(xué)問的精神。

這對我來說是一筆永久的精神財富。

語言的錘煉和思維的游戲

備戰(zhàn)比賽的過程本身對于我是非常rewarding的經(jīng)歷。

演講稿，辯論詞的寫作是沉淀思想、錘煉語言的好機會。我記得當(dāng)年“21世紀杯”的演講題是“East and West, Can We Live in Two Cultures”，要把這樣大的一個題目在四分鐘之內(nèi)說清楚，說精彩實非易事。寫作的過程是一個painstaking process, 我從構(gòu)思到定稿大概花了三周多的時間，而且?guī)滓灼涓濉６q論賽中的presentation，更是要求寫得邏輯縝密，絲絲入扣，兼具文采。我們常常要在短時間內(nèi)同時就一個辯題寫正反兩方的辯詞，這種寫作的訓(xùn)練，在平時是很少見的。

口頭實戰(zhàn)訓(xùn)練則無疑是強化口語的最佳途徑。在講臺上或在辯場上，我們需要擁有一個清醒而敏捷的頭腦，并習(xí)慣用英語思維。有人說口才好是天生的，這也許有幾分道理，但我的經(jīng)驗告訴我，后天的訓(xùn)練也不可小覷。通過每天的強化訓(xùn)練，我們漸漸習(xí)慣于“think while we speak”，語言也變得越來越流利, 甚至能夠在即興的辯論中不時冒出精彩之語。現(xiàn)在想來，集訓(xùn)的那段時間，我的英語口語水平，寫作能力和口才可以說是達到了學(xué)生時代的一個高峰。

比賽給我語言上的幫助可能還在其次，更重要的是它是一種思維的游戲。即興演講和辯論賽對于選手心智的磨練都是非常taxing的。它們都要求我們就某一個controversial issue在短時間的思考后take sides, 然后在腦子里迅速羅列問題正反兩方的major arguments并抓住自己支持的一方進行有條不紊、清楚有力的闡述。

不過，演講因為缺乏與人針鋒相對的交鋒，還僅僅是一個人的思維的“直線式”的表達。相比之下，辯論則是在雙方劍拔弩張的緊張氣氛中對于參加者的語言和思想的更為嚴峻的考驗，可以說是口語交流中的最高境界。一個勢均力敵的選題，給雙方都有很大的辯論空間，辯手運用嚴密的邏輯論證和各種辯論技巧，可以形成很精彩的對話。即便看似uneven的選題中處于劣勢的一方，也常常可以打破慣性思維，從另一個角度或常識的相反面去思考，從中找到合理而有說服力的論證，“山窮水復(fù)疑無路，柳暗花明又一村”。我覺得這種充分激發(fā)思維的活力，從不同角度來思考問題的方式，對習(xí)慣了一言堂，習(xí)慣去尋找一個標準答案的中國學(xué)生而言，更值得提倡。當(dāng)然，由于辯論雙方都必須堅持己見，觀點有時難免偏頗，但不論怎樣，我覺得從純粹的intellectual exercise來看，辯論還是不可多得的訓(xùn)練方法。

國外許多知名大學(xué)都有speech club和debating club。而記得我作為“21世紀杯”演講賽的獲勝者參加英國English Speaking Union的workshop的時候，也親眼目睹許多外國朋友年紀小小就成為出色而老練的演講者、辯手，不由感嘆西方良好oral tradition對年輕人的熏陶。相比之下，我國的教育在這一塊就欠缺許多了。正因為這樣，當(dāng)年比賽時就有老師感慨，不應(yīng)只有參賽的一小部分同學(xué)得益于這一類的口語和思維訓(xùn)練，也不應(yīng)只為比賽而比賽，而應(yīng)當(dāng)將這種培訓(xùn)機制化、經(jīng)常化，使更多的同學(xué)感受此中的妙趣，得到鍛煉。推廣這一類的社團，從小處講，可以培養(yǎng)個人的口才和能力，從大處講，有助于推動民主空氣的形成。

學(xué)會挑戰(zhàn)自我任何一個比賽，都不僅是實力的比拼，也是心理素質(zhì)的較量。中國不像西方那樣有很好的oral tradition, 能夠在大庭廣眾之下對自己的觀點侃侃而談，這對許多在傳統(tǒng)教育模式下成長起來的擅長考試而訥于口語表達的中國學(xué)生來說是一個不小的挑戰(zhàn)。同時，比賽不僅是數(shù)十名選手展示個人風(fēng)采的舞臺，也是各高校之間暗自較量的地方，選手往往還肩負著學(xué)校榮譽的擔(dān)子。因此，如何很好的對待自身和外界的壓力，發(fā)揮自己的水平，是除了實力之外演講者要面對的另一大問題。

1998年我參加演講比賽時是頂著挺大的壓力的。這不僅由于比賽的規(guī)模和影響力之大，也由于此前一年，我代表學(xué)校參加“外研杯”英語辯論賽與冠軍失之交臂。因此再次參賽時我就有一種患得患失的心理，生怕這一次不能取得更好的成績，“無顏面對江東父老”。

壓力對每個選手來說都是存在的，如何排解它還要看自己。海明威有一句名言“重壓下的輕松”(grace under pressure)，是我很欣賞的，但要做到并不容易。我記得在備戰(zhàn)的過程中有一部名為“Listen to Me”的美國電影給了我很大的激勵。影片講述的是一支名不見經(jīng)傳的大學(xué)辯論隊克服重重困難，最終挫敗來自名校的對手，折桂全美大學(xué)辯論賽的故事。從他們的刻苦訓(xùn)練和慷慨陳詞中，我似乎感受到一種敢于挑戰(zhàn)自身極限的勇氣。可能是在這種心態(tài)下，我做到了把勝負暫且置之度外，經(jīng)過充分的準備，最終奪冠。

生活不總是賽場，但這種頂住壓力、自我超越的精神卻能夠指導(dǎo)我們的生活。研究生畢業(yè)后，我考入中央電視臺英語頻道成為一名記者。有的朋友對我的選擇頗感意外。因為我性格比較內(nèi)向，似乎與風(fēng)風(fēng)火火的記者形象不夠“match”。但對我來說，這恰是一個welcoming challenge.兩年多的記者生涯使我對生活有了新的感悟。如果說學(xué)生時代賦予你一個寬松的環(huán)境可以悠閑的做一點學(xué)問，你習(xí)慣了與老師同學(xué)，書本里的先哲和自己腦海中的假想人物對話，那么記者的生活則完全不同——整天跟時間賽跑，與形形色色的人交流，然后要求自己在極有限的時間內(nèi)寫稿，編片，讓新聞在第一時間播出去。適逢在外地報道，或是針對一個突發(fā)事件的報道，那么對記者的要求就更為苛刻。任何狀況都可能隨時出現(xiàn)— 聯(lián)系采訪困難重重；寫稿的時間特別緊張；做出鏡的時候，由于時間和場景所限，可能必須一遍過關(guān)，還不能是平鋪直敘；在傳送片子的時候隨時都可能出現(xiàn)意外。相比之下，當(dāng)年演講賽面對的那種壓力，可能就不算什么了。壓力雖然很大，但每每在完成各種看似的mission impossible的時候，我的成就感也是巨大的。記得在齊齊哈爾采訪日軍遺留化學(xué)武器造成重大傷亡的新聞的時候，我遇到了上述所有的困難。不過還是咬牙一個個克服了，我在一周的時間內(nèi)發(fā)回了系列報道，有的還是獨家采訪。其中有一條新聞后來獲得全國新聞彩虹獎二等獎。

六年過去了，北外的學(xué)生生活已成為我青春的背影，演講比賽的諸多細節(jié)隨時間的流轉(zhuǎn)成為逝去的記憶。在這六年里我的生活也發(fā)生了諸多變化，而當(dāng)年那些為比賽全身心投入過，期待過，哭過和笑過的日子則成為大學(xué)生活美好記憶的裝點。我想，在學(xué)生生活里有過這樣一段經(jīng)歷，是彌足珍貴的，而這種人生體驗還將在無形中影響我今后的人生旅程。

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen.The title of my speech today is 'Crossing the Sea'.女士們、先生們，晚上好。今天，我演講的題目是:《穿越海洋》。An English poet by the name of Rudyard Kipling once wrote in his poem 'We and They':英國詩人羅得雅德?吉卜林曾寫過一首詩，名叫《我們與他們》，其中寫道:'All the people like us are We像我們的人是我們And everyone else is They其余的人是他們We live over the sea我們生活在海這邊While They live over the way他們生活在路那邊We eat pork and beef with cowhorn-handled knives我們用牛角柄的刀叉吃豬牛肉They who gobble their rice off a leafAre horrified out of their lives.'吞吃粽葉包飯的他們嚇得要死。When these lines first caught my eyes, I was shocked-how could two peoples remain so isolated and ignorant of each other in the past? Facing this audience on the stage, I have the exciting feeling of participating in the march of history, for what we are facing today is more than a mere competition or contest.It is an assembly of some of China's most talented and motivated people, representatives of a younger generation that are preparing themselves for the coming of a new century.I'm grateful that I've been given this opportunity, at such a historic moment, to stand here as a spokesman of my generation and to take a serious look back at the past 15 years, a crucial period for every one of us and for this nation as well.Though it is only within my power to tell about my personal experience, and only a tiny fragment of it at that, it still represents, I believe, the root of a spirit which has been essential to me and to all the people bred by the past 15 years.In my elementary years, there was a little girl in the class who worked very hard but somehow could never do satisfactorily in her lessons.The teacher asked me to help her, and it was obvious that she expected a lot from me.but as a young boy, restless, thoughtless, I always tried to evade her so as to get more time to enjoy myself.One day before the final exam, she came up to me and said, “Could you please explain this to me? I want very much to do better this time.” I started explaining, and finished in a hurry.pretending not to notice her still confused eyes, I ran off quickly.Nat surprisingly, she again did very badly in the exam.And two months later, at the beginning of the new semester, word came of her death of blood cancer.No one ever knew about the little task I failed to fulfill, but I couldn't forgive myself.I simply couldn't forget her eyes, which seem to be asking, “Why didn't you do a little more to help me, when it was so easy for you? Why didn't you understand a little better the trust placed in you, so that I would not have to leave this world in such pain and regret?”

I was about eight or nine years old at that time, but in a way it was the very starting point of my life, for I began to understand the word “responsibility” and to learn to always do my duties faithfully and devotedly, for the implications of that sacred word has dawned on me: the mutual need and trust of people, the co-operation and inter-reliance which are the very foundation of human society.Later in my life, I continued to experience many failures.But never again did I feel that regret which struck me at the death of the girl, for it makes my heart satisfied to think that I have always done everything in my power to fulfill my responsibilities as best I can.As I grew up, changed and improved by this incident and many other similar ones, I began to perceive the changes taking place around me and to find that society, in a way, was in its formative years like myself.New buildings, new commodities and new fashions appear every day.New ideas, new information, new technologies.people can talk with each other from any corner of the earth in a matter of seconds.Society is becoming more competitive.Words like individuality and creativity are getting more emphasis and more people are rewarded for their hard work and efforts.Such is the era in which this generation ,grows and matures.Such is the era in which this generation will take over the nation from our fathers and learn to run it.Yet in the meantime, many problems still exist.We learn that crimes take place in broad daylight with crowds of people looking on and not assisting.We hear that there are still about 1 million children in this country who can't even afford to go to elementary schools while enormous sums of money are being squandered away on dinner parties and luxury cars.We buy shoddy medicines, or merely worthless junk in the name of medicines, that aggravate, rather than alleviate our diseases since money, many people believe, is the most important thing in the world that must be made, even at the expense of morality and responsibility.Such an era, therefore, determines that we are a generation with a keener sense of competition and efficiency and a greater readiness to think critically and act creatively.Such an era, furthermore, demands, that we are a generation with a clear perception of our historical responsibility and an aggressive will to take action and solve the problems.History has long been preparing these qualities in this generation and it is now calling us forward to give testimony to our patriotism and heroism towards this nation and all humanity.Standing here now, I think of the past 15 years of my life as an ordinary student.probably I'll be an ordinary man for the rest of my life.But this doesn't discourage me any, for I know that with my sense of responsibility and devoted efforts to always strive, for the best, it's going to be a meaningful and worthwhile life that I will be living.Standing here now, I think of the past 15 years of this nation, which has achieved greatness that inspired millions of people of my age, most of whom will not attain fame or prestige and only a few of whom will be remembered by posterity.But that doesn't discourage us any, because we know that the world watches, the world listens, the world is waiting to see where this nation will be heading in a time of rich opportunities and fierce competition.I can't ever forget that little girl in my class who couldn't had the same opportunities as any of us here to enjoy a wonderful life today and a hopeful world tomorrow.It is the sacred responsibility of this generation to face up to the challenges of the new century and to devote our sweat and blood, our wisdom and passion, to the historic cause of making this nation a greater and happier land for every one of us.We are not going to evade that responsibility.We are going to let people down.And people, far and near, will hear of us.Frost will be brought to their backbones and tears to their eyes when our stories are told and retold, So let us go forth, my fellow members of this luckily chosen generation, and meet the new century in victory and glory.
