Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. The title of my speech today is “Crossing the Sea”.An Englishpoet by the name of Rudyard Kipling once wrote in this poem “We and They”:
All the people like us are We
and everyone else is They
We live over the sea
While They live over the way
We eat pork and beef with cow horn-handled knives
They who gobble their rice off a leaf
Are horrified out of their lives. When these lines first caught my eyes, I was shocked--how could two people remain so isolated and ignorant of each other in the past? Today′s society, of course, is an entirely different picture. Those people who used to eat with gobble their rice might be as well have taken to fish and chips.Indeed, just take China as example; Our modern life has been influenced by Western style of livingin so many ways that it′s no longer surprising to see teenagers going crazy about rock-and-roll, whole families dining out at McDonald′s and even rather elderly people dressed in Apple Jeans. However, these are only some expressions of the cultural changes taking place in our society today. What is really going on is a subtle but significant restructuring of the nation′s mentality.Just lookaround. How many college graduates are ready to compete aggressively for every job opportunity, whereasnot long ago they were asked just to sit idle and wait for whatever was to be assigned to them by thegovernment?
How many young people are now eager to seek for an independent life whereas only two decades agothey would rely totally on their parents to arrange for their future? Ask anyone who participates intoday′s speech contest.Who has not come with a will to fight and who has not come determined to achieve self-fulfillment in winning the game? And I′m quite certain that if Confucius had lived to see today′s China, he would have been horrified to see young lovers kissing each other in public places in an unreserved expression of their passion. It is therefore evident that we as descendants of an ancient Eastern civilization are alreadyliving under strong influence of the Western culture. But it is not only in China that we find theincorporation of the two cultures.Take the United States as an example: During the 1980s, in face of the overwhelming competition fromJapan, many American companies such as the Ford began to adopt a teamwork management from their rivals, the essence of which, lay at the very core of
Eastern culture.Take the Chinese acupuncture as another example: This traditional treatment of diseases is finallyfinding its way to the West and hence the underlying notion that illness is resulted from the imbalance between yin and yang within the body--an idea which would strike any Westerner asincredible in the past!
Ladies and Gentlemen, we live in a great epoch when the global integration of economy and theinformation revolution have brought cultures of the world closer than ever before. We live in a particular era when countries, East and West, find themselves in need of readjusting their traditionalvalues. We live, at the same time, at a critical juncture of our evolution because such problems asethnic conflicts and regional unrest are increasingly posing a threat to the peace and happiness of thewhole human race.To cope with such an era and to embrace an even brighter future, we need to learn to live more harmoniously in a world community which is becoming smaller and smaller. My dear fellow students, our command of the English language render sit possible for us to gain aninsight into Western culture while retaining our own cultural identity. Therefore, it is our sacred responsibility to promote the cultural exchanges and hence the mutual understanding between China and the rest of the world. It is my happiest dream that new generation of Chinese will not only grow up drinking Coca cola andwatching Hollywood, but also be blessed with the far-reaching benefits of multiple cultures;benefitsthat our forefathers had never, ever dreamed of.To end my speech, I would like to quote Rudyard Kipling again:
All the people like us are We
And everyone else is They
But once you cross over the sea
You will end by looking on We
As only a sort of They.Thank you!

have i ever collected waste paper or bottles for recycling? have i ever planted any trees or flowers in or near my neighborhood?” if your answers are “yes”, it means that you have already done something useful to improve the environment.moreover, we should also use public transportation as possible as we can.we should also save water and electricity and other resources for next generation.now i want to say: let’s do our best to make our world more beautiful!
yes, that's a memorable scene in one of my favorite movies, called gorillas in the mist, based on a true story of mrs.diana fossey, who spent most of her lifetime in rwanda to protect the ecoenvironment there until the very end of her life.
to me, the movie not only presents an unforgettable scene but also acts as a timeless reminder that we should not develop the tourist industry at the cost of our eco-environment.
today, we live in a world of prosperity but still threatened by so many new problems.on the one hand, tourism, as one of the most promising industries in the 21st century, provides people with the great opportunity to see everything there is to see and to go any place there is to go.it has bee a lifestyle for some people, and has turned out to be the driving force in gdp growth.it has the magic to turn a backward town into a wonderland of prosperity.but on the other hand, many problems can occurbig notes, small notes or even coins-from housewives, plumbers, ambulance drivers, salesmen, teachers, children and invalids.some of them cannot afford to send the money but they do.these are the ones who drive the cabs, who nurse in hospitals, who are suffering from ecological damage in their neighborhood.why? because they care.because they still want their mother nature back.because they know it still belongs to them.
this kind of feeling that i have, ladies and gentlemen, is when it feels like it, smells like it, and looks like it,it's all ing from a scene to be remembered, a scene to recall and to cherish.
the other night, as i saw the moon linger over the land and before it was sent into the invisible, my mind was filled with songs.i found myself humming softly, not to the music, but to something else, someplace else, a place remembered, a place untouched, a field of grass where no one seemed to have been except the deer.
and all those unforgettable scenes strengthened the feeling that it's time for us to do something, for our own and our ing generation.once again, i have e to think of mrs.diana fossey because it is with her spirit, passion, courage and strong sense of our ecoenvironment that we are taking our next step into the world.
and no matter who we are, what we do and where we go, in our minds, there's always a scene to remember, a scene worth our effort to protect it and fight for it. thank you very much.the rhythm of life most important lesson – we must place our mind in harmony with the natural order of things to be successful.let me tell you what happened.i decided to take part in an international marathon in my hometown last year.being an ambitious person, i hoped to finish it within 5 hours, acpanied by my friend with whom i had trained.the big day finally arrived.“ready...set...bang” and we were off.at first, we kept a rapid pace and ran nonstop.at this pace, we finished the first 20 kilometers in 2 hours and i thought running a marathon was a piece of cake.then my running mate began to slow down.i urged him to keep running at the same pace but he said no, he wanted to conserve his energy.i felt i had partnered with the wrong person;therefore, i sprinted on and left him behind in the dust.a few kilometers later, i began to understand his strategy as my pace slowed to a jog then a walk.after that i was incapable of moving another step.i was humiliated as more and more people ran passed me.more than once i thought “maybe i should quit.” i started to doubt my ability to finish this race.at this moment, my running mate caught up with me and slapped me on the back.“follow me,” he shouted.he had balanced his marathon pace and was encouraged me to do the same.for the rest of this grueling contest, we walked, jogged, ran a few miles, and walked again.slowly, painfully but hopefully this time, we established the most suitable pace
within the natural flow of our physical capabilities.eventually we acplished our first marathon of 42 kilometers in 4 and half hours.i asked myself, what did this marathon mean to me? my marathon experience became an influential metaphor for my life about how we must learn to pace ourselves in everything, by being in tune with the rhythm of life.like the tide that ebbs and flows, we must listen to advice but make our own decisions.like the show at dawn and dusk, we must learn to balance pride and modesty.and from the way the wind can both shout and whisper, we must learn when to be strong and when to be gentle, for everything moves in its own rhythm and its own yin and yang elements.it is the interaction of these plementary extremes that produces harmony, as laozi said, extremes meet.since the marathon, this notion of two opposite forces working together has been my running partner, so to speak.yin and yang exist everywhere, constantly interacting, and never existing in an absolute condition.ladies and gentlemen, life is like running a marathon, let us discover, define and develop a natural rhythm of life, in order to achieve both harmony and success.thank you for listening.
to me march 28th was a lucky day.it was on that particular evening that i found myself at central stage, in the spotlight.winning the “21st century〃ericsson cup” seventh national english speaking petition is a memory that i shall treasure and one that will surely stay.more important than winning the cup is the friendship that has been established and developed among the contestants, and the chance to municate offstage in addition to peting onstage.also the petition helps boost public speaking in china, a skill hitherto undervalued.for me, though, the petition is a more personal experience.habitually shy, i had been reluctant to take part in any such activities.encouraged by my friends, however, i made a last-minute decision to give it a try.in the course of preparation i somehow rediscovered myself, a truer me.i found that, after all, i like municating with other people;that exchanging views can be so much fun—and so much rewarding, both emotionally and intellectually;that public speaking is most effective when you are least guarded;and that it is essential to success in every walk of life.at a more practical level, i realized knowing what you are going to say and how you are going to say it are equally important.to take the original ideas out of your head and transplant them, so to speak, to that of others, you need to have an organized mind.this ability improves with training.yet there should not be any loss or addition or distortion in the process.those ideas that finally find their waysintosanother head need to be recognizably yours.language is a means
to transmit information, not a means to obstruct munication.it should be lucid to be penetrating.in china, certain public speaking skills have been unduly emphasized.will it really help, we are pelled to ask, to bang at the podium or yell at the top of your lungs, if you have e with a poorly organized speech, a muddled mind, and unwillingness to truly share your views? above all, the single most important thing i learnt was that as a public speaker, you need to pay attention, first and foremost, to the content of your speech.and second, the structure of your speech: how one idea relates and progresses to another.only after these e delivery and non-verbal munication: speed control, platform manner, and so on.pronunciation is important, yet of greater importance is this: is your language petent enough to express your ideas exactly the way you intend them to be understood? i was informed afterwards that i was chosen to be the winner for my “appropriately ed speech, excellent presence and quick-witted response”.in so remarking, the judges clearly showed their preference: they e to listen for meaningful ideas, not for loose judgments, nor easy laughters.some contestants failed to address their questions head on.some were able to, but did not knowswheresto stop—the dragging on betrayed their lack of confidence.the root cause was that they did not listen attentively to the questions.or they were thinking of what they had prepared.as i said in my speech, “it is vitally important that we young people do
more serious thinking...to take them [issues like globalization] on and give them honest thinking is the first step to be prepared for both opportunities and challenges ing our way”.we need to respond honestly.a petition like this draws talented students from all over the country.and of course, i learnt more things than just about public speaking.since in the final analysis, public speaking is all about effective munication.and this goes true for all munications, whatever their setting.and the following is the final version of my speech: globalization: opportunities and challenges for china's younger generation thirty years ago, american president richard nixon made an epoch-making visit to china, a country still isolated at that time.premier zhou enlai said to him, “your handshake came over the vastest ocean in the world—twenty-five years of no munication”.thirty years since, china and america have exchanged many handshakes.the fundamental implication of this exle is that the need to municate across differences in culture and ideology is not only felt by the two countries but by many other nations as well.as we can see today, environmentalists from different countries are making joint efforts to address the issue of global warming, economists are seeking solutions to financial crises that rage in a particular region but nonetheless cripple the world economy, and politicians and diplomats are
getting together to discuss the issue of bating terrorism.peace and prosperity has bee a mon goal that we are striving for all over the world.underlying this mighty trend of global munication is the echo of e.m.forster's s “only connect!” with the it revolution, traditional boundaries of human society fall away.our culture, politics, society and merce are being sloshedsintosone large melting pot of humanity.in this interlinked world, there are no outsiders, for a disturbance in one place is likely to impact other parts of the globe.we have begun to realize that a world divided cannot endure.china is now actively integratingsintosthe world.our recent entry to the wto is a good exle.for decades, we have taken pride in being self-reliant, but now we realize the importance of participating in and contributing to a broader economic order.from a precarious role in the world arena to our present wto membership, we have e a long way.but what does the way ahead look like? in some parts of the world people are demonstrating against globalization.are they justified, then, in criticizing the globalizing world? instead of narrowing the gap between the rich and the poor, they say, globalization enables the developed nations to swallow the developing nations' wealth in debts and interest.globalization, they argue, should be about a mon interest in every other nation's economic health.we are reminded by karl marx that capital goes beyond national

yes, that's a memorable scene in one of my favorite movies, called gorillas in the mist, based on a true story of mrs.dian fossey, who spent most of bet lifetime in rwanda to protect the ecoenvironment there until the very end of her life.to me, the movie not only presents an unforgettable scene but also acts as a 6)timeless(永恒的)reminder that we should not develop the tourist industry at the cost of our ecoenvironment.today, we live in a world of prosperity but still threatened by so many new problems.on the one hand, tourism, as one of the most promising industries in the 21st century, provides people with the great opportunity to see everything there is to see and to go any place there is to go.it has bee a lifestyle for some people, and has
turned out to be the driving force in gdp growth.it has the magic to turn a backward town into a wonderland of prosperity.but on the other hand, many problems can occur---natural scenes aren't natural anymore.deforestation to heat lodges is devastating nepal.oil spills from tourist boats are polluting antarctica.tribal people are forsaking their native music and dress to listen to u2 on walkman and wear nike and reeboks.all these 7)appalling(令人震驚的)facts have brought us to the realization that we can no longer stand by and do nothing, because the very thought of it has been 8)eroding(侵蝕)our resources.encouragingly, the explosive growth of global travel has put tourism again in the spotlight, which is why the united nations has made XX the year of ecotourism, for the first time to bring to the world's attention the benefits of tourism, but also its capacity to destroy our ecoenvironment.now every year, many local ecoenvironmental protection organizations an: receiving donations--big notes, small notes or even coins--from housewives, 9)plumbers(水管工人), ambulance drivers, salesmen, teachers, children and 10)invalids(殘疾人), some of them can not afford to send the money but they do.these are the ones who drive the cabs, who nurse in hospitals, who are suffering from ecological damage in their neighborhood.why? because they care.because they still want their mother nature back.because they know it still
belongs to them.this kind of feeling that i have, ladies and gentlemen, is when it feels like it, smells like it, and looks like it, it's all ing from a scene to remember, a scene to recall and to cherish.the other night, as l saw the moon linger over the land and before it was sent into the invisible, my mind was filled with songs.i found myself humming softly, not to the music, but to some-thing else, someplace else.a place remembered, a place untouched, a field of grass where no one seem to have been except the deer.and all those unforgettable scenes strengthened the feeling that it's lime for us to do something, for our own and our ing generation.once again, i have e to think of mrs.dian fossey be-cause it's with her spirit, passion, courage and strong sense of our ecoenvironment that we are taking our next step into the world.and no matter who we are, what we do and where we go, in our mind, there's always a scene to remember, a scene worth our effort to protect it and fight for it.

01】if i were a boy again
if i were a boy again, i would practice perseverance(毅力)more often, and never give up a thing because it was hard or inconvenient.if we want light, we must conquer darkness.perseverance can sometimes equal genius in its results.“there are only two creatures,” says a proverb, “who can surmount the pyramids—the eagle and the snail.”
if i were a boy again, i would school myself into a habit of attention;i would let nothing e between me and the subject in hand.i would remember that a good skater never tries to skate in two directions at once.the habit of attention bees part of our life, if we begin early enough.i often hear grown-up people say “i could not fix my attention on the lecture or book, although i wished to do so” , and the reason is, the habit was not formed in youth.if i were to live my life over again, i would pay more attention to the cultivation of the memory.i would strengthen that faculty by every possible means, and on every possible occasion.it takes a little hard work at first to remember things accurately;but memory soon helps itself, and gives very little trouble.it only needs early cultivation to bee a power.if i were a boy again, i would look on the cheerful side.life is very much like a mirror: if you smile upon it, i smile back upon you;but if you frown and look doubtful on it, you will get a similar look in return.inner sunshine warms not only the heart of the owner, but of all that e in contact with it.“who shuts love out ,in turn shall be shut out from love.”
finally, instead of trying hard to be happy, as if that were the sole purpose of life, i would, if i were a boy again, i would still try harder to make others happy.【譯文】假如我又回到了童年,我做事要更有毅力,決不因為事情艱難或者麻煩而撒手不干,我們要光明,就得征服黑暗。

在我們享受的時候懂得珍惜 cherish what we are enjoying it is a report about the new planet which holds possibility for life.
it shows that european astronomers have discovered a new planet, they name it gliese 581 c. it is about 20.5 light years from our earth.they estimated the planet's average temperature at between 0 and 40 degrees centigrade.it is orbiting the red dwarf star, gliese 581.
most important of all, it’s an earth-like planet.there might be mountin, sea and liquid water.
so the astronomers believe that it is potentially habitable.
however, gliese 581 c might be ”tidally locked" to it’s sun-the dwarf star the way our moon is to the earth.
it means that it must always show its same face to its sun, and that while one side would be too fiercely hot to support life, the other side would be too cold.
this report makes me to realize that how valuable our earth is.這使我認識到我們地球有多么珍貴!everyday, we can see sunrise and sunset.
the day and night keeps on exchanging.it’s not too hot in the daytime while not to cold at night.
everyday, i go to school cheerfully in the morning and skip along at the way home as the sun set.
we could experience changes through the four seasons of one year.
spring is the season sowing seeds.it is pregnant with life and green.
in the summer, colorful swimming suits frolick in the water happily.
autumn is the harvest season , the paddy fields and trees are covered with golden color.
in the winter,we can have snow battle, playing to our hearts' content in the world of silvery white. how fortunate we are because we can live on the earth!
we should cherish it, instead of polluting it, spoiling it or even destroying it.我們要珍惜它,千萬別污染它,別糟踐它,別破壞它!if one day, it is really angry and stop rotation, that will have be a disaster for us human being.
so, let us protect our earth with our love, making it better and more harmonious.
ladies and gentlemen, now let me show you a story about the monkey and the moon.
one day, a little monkey is playing by the well. he looks in the well and shouts :
“oh!my god!the moon has fallen into the well!”“噢! 月亮掉到井里頭啦!” an older monkeys runs over, takes a look, and says, 一只大猴子跑來一看,說,“goodness me!the moon is really in the water!” 月亮掉在井里頭啦!” and the oldest monkey es over.
he is very surprised as well and cries out: 他也非常驚奇,喊道: “the moon is in the well.” “糟了,月亮掉在井里頭了!” a group of monkeys run over to the well.
一群猴子跑到井邊來,they look at the moon in the well and shout: 他們看到井里的月亮,喊道:
“the moon did fall into the well!e on!let’s get it out!” 讓我們把它撈起來!” then, the oldest monkey hangs on the tree up side down ,with his feet on the branch.然后,老猴子倒掛在大樹上,and he pulls the next monkey’s feet with his hands.拉住大猴子的腳,all the other monkeys follow his suit, 其他的猴子一個個跟著,and they join each other one by one down to the moon in the well.
just before they reach the moon, the oldest monkey raises his head and happens to see the moon in the sky, 正好他們摸到月亮的時候,老猴子抬頭發現月亮掛在天上呢 he yells excitedly “don’t be so foolish!the moon is still in the sky!”
月亮還好好地掛在天上呢!” this is the end of the story.do you like it?
hope you all can remember me, wangqihang, a happy guy like the sunshine. wele you to visit my blog at http://blog.sina..cn/u/1274563887 歡迎大學到 訪問我的博客。thank you very much.
our every sensory nerve.so concerning that much sentiment music can express, i believe it is music that has gathered different parts of the world together, spanning both time and space gaps.furthermore, people nowadays don’t just use music simply for regulating the atmosphere or something like that.in psychology especially psychophysiology, music has been explored quite a lot for its effects on human’s brain, either for treatment or training skills.to sum up, i don’t think it’s improper to exaggerate a bit that life without music is just like a fish living without water.indeed, with respect to all the colorful feelings music brings as well as the instrumental influence that music exerts on us, music, is the that has changed the world.

比賽時間迫近了,他把學院參加第一屆“21世紀杯”并獲獎的師兄徐翌成找來,說,“Let’s put our heads together, and make a final effort at it.”
到演講比賽時,他又拿選題—摘自莎翁劇本的一句話“All the world is a stage”—借題發揮。他說,“All the world is a stage.Men and women are actors. There are comedies and tragedies. And the speech contest is a farce.”
我記得當年“21世紀杯”的演講題是“East and West, Can We Live in Two Cultures”,要把這樣大的一個題目在四分鐘之內說清楚,說精彩實非易事。

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen.Today I would like to begin with a story. There was once a physical 1)therapist(臨床醫學家)who traveled all the way from America to Africa to do a 2)census(調查)about
mountain 3)gorillas(大猩猩).These gorillas are a main attraction to tourists from all over the world;this put them severely under threat of 4)poaching(偷獵)and being put into the zoo.She went there out of curiosity, but what she saw strengthened her determination to devote her whole life to fighting for those beautiful creatures. She witnessed a scene, a scene taking us to a place we never imaged we've ever been, where in the very depth of the African rainforest, surrounded by trees, flowers and butterflies, the mother gorillas 5)cuddled(擁抱)their babies。
Yes, that's a memorable scene in one of my favorite movies, called Gorillas in the Mist, based on a true story of Mrs.Dian Fossey, who spent most of bet lifetime in Rwanda to protect the ecoenvironment there until the very end of her life.To me, the movie not only presents an unforgettable scene but also acts as a 6)timeless(永恒的)reminder that we should not develop the tourist industry at the cost of our ecoenvironment.Today, we live in a world of prosperity but still threatened by so many new problems. On the one hand, tourism, as one of the most promising industries in the 21st century, provides people with the great opportunity to see everything there is to see and to go any place there is to go.It has become a lifestyle for some people, and has
turned out to be the driving force in GDP growth. It has the magic to turn a backward town into a wonderland of prosperity. But on the other hand, many problems can occur---natural scenes aren't natural anymore.Deforestation to heat lodges is devastating Nepal.Oil spills from tourist boats are polluting Antarctica.Tribal people are
forsaking their native music and dress to listen to U2 on Walkman and wear Nike and Reeboks. All these 7)appalling(令人震驚的)facts have brought us to the realization that we can no longer stand by and do nothing, because the very thought of it has been 8)eroding(侵蝕)our resources.Encouragingly, the explosive growth of global travel has put tourism again in the spotlight, which is why the United Nations has made 2002 the year of ecotourism, for the first time to bring to the world's
attention the benefits of tourism, but also its capacity to destroy our ecoenvironment. Now every year, many local ecoenvironmental protection
organizations an: receiving donations--big notes, small notes or even coins--from housewives, 9)plumbers(水管工人), ambulance drivers, salesmen, teachers, children and 10)invalids(殘疾人), Some of them can not afford to send the money but they do.These are the ones who drive the cabs, who nurse in hospitals, who are suffering from
ecological damage in their neighborhood. Why? Because they care.Because they still want their Mother Nature back.Because they know it still belongs to them. This kind of feeling that I have, ladies and gentlemen, is when it feels like it, smells like it, and looks like it, it's all coming from a scene to remember, a scene to recall and to cherish. The other night, as l saw the moon linger over the land and before it was sent into the invisible, my mind was filled with songs.I found myself humming softly, not to the music, but to some-thing else, someplace else.a place remembered, a place untouched, a field of grass where no one seem to have been except the deer. And all those unforgettable scenes strengthened the feeling that it's lime for us to do something, for our own and our coming generation.Once again, I have come to think of Mrs.Dian Fossey be-cause it's with her spirit, passion, courage and strong sense of our
ecoenvironment that we are taking our next step into the world. And no matter who we are, what we do and where we go, in our mind, there's always a scene to remember, a scene worth our effort to protect it and fight for it.
