動詞表示一種動態，新聞標題在濃縮新聞內容時，如能恰到好處地用上一個動詞，就能增色不少，給人以形象生動、躍然紙上的感覺。如earthquake Hits Osakakobe（地震重襲日本皈神地區）遠比 Earthouake Inosakakobe顯得具體而達意。標題中用了動詞，固然好處不少，但也給我們閱讀英語報刊增加了一個困難。

我們知道，英語中的動詞有時態變化，在英語新聞標題中也不例外。但由于新聞標題必須言簡意賅，不可能采用英語的所有時態形式來濃縮新聞事實。為此，新聞標題形成了自身獨有的時態特點，以達到使動詞既傳神達意又具時間感的目的。英語報刊的新聞標題中一般不用過去時態，當然更不用過去完成時等時態，而采用現在時態，使讀者閱報時一如置身于這條新聞事件中，這叫做“新聞現在時”(Journalistic Present Tense)，與文學寫作中的 “歷史現在時”，（Historical Present Tense）實際上完全一樣。所以，英語新聞標題中常用的動詞時態主要有三種：一般現在時、將來時和現在進行時。

現分述如下：

4.1一般現在時通常被用來表示過去發生的事

通常情況下，報刊所載消息多為己發生過的事，按日常英語語法，標題中的動詞應使用過去時態，但是這樣容易給人產生一種陳舊感，似有‘昨日黃花，之嫌，缺乏吸引力。為了彌補這一缺陷，英語新聞標題常用一般現在時從形式上來增強報道的新鮮感（Freshness）、現實感。Reality，和直接感（Immediacy）。此外，標題采用動詞的一般現在時還可省去動詞過去式構成中常見的“Ed”兩個字母，節省標題字數。正因一般現在時在英語新聞標題中的這一特殊。用法，初讀英語報紙的讀者應特別注意這一現象，不要把它誤以為是日常英語語法中的一般現在時，從而影響對全文內容的閱讀與理解。例如：

Comeback Gives China A Sensational Thomas Cup Win.(The Comeback Gave China A Sensational Thomas Cup Win.)中國隊反敗為勝榮獲湯姆斯杯。

Street Battle In Heavy Shelling As Peace Talks Proceed.(Street Battle In Heavy Shelling As Peace Talks Proceeded.)和平會談進行之際巷戰依然炮聲隆隆。

4.2動詞的將來時更多地直接采用動詞不定式來表達

英語新聞標題中動詞將來時的表達形式除一般將來時“Will+動詞原形”外，更多的還是采用“聯系動詞be+動詞不定式”結構，其中聯系動詞be通常省略，以節省標題字數。換言之，動詞不定式在英語新聞標題中可直接表示未來動作，這是因為不定式標志“To”只由兩個字母構成，比一般將來時中的“Will”來得少，故頻頻見諸英語報端。例如：

Last Two Beiruit Hostages 'To Go Free'.(The Last Two Hostages In Beiruit Are 'To Go Free'.)貝魯特最后兩名人質“獲釋在望”。

Florida Freeze To Increase Area Produce Prices.(The Freeze In Florida Is To Increase The Areas Produce Prices.)佛羅里達嚴寒將使該地區農產品漲價。

4.3現在分詞直接表示正在進行的動作或事件

對于正在發生的事態或動作,英語新聞標題也按日常英語語法規則處理，采用現在進行時"Be+現在分詞”這一形式，但其中“Be”又通常省略。因此，剩下的現在分詞便在新聞標題中直接表示正在進行的動作或正在發展的事態。例如：

Signs Of Rifts Appearing In Argentina's Junta.(The Signs Of Rifts Are Appearing In Argentina's Junta.)阿根廷軍人政府出現內訌跡象。

Deposits, Loans Rising In Shanghai.(Deposits And Loans Are Rising In Shanghai.)上海儲蓄與貸款額見升。

標題是新聞不可分割的組成部分。閱讀英語報紙的新聞標題是我們學習閱讀英語報刊的第一步。這么說絕無夸張之意，從語法角度來看，英語新聞標題有其一套獨特的語法體系，與人們平時常見的英語句子語法有所不同，新聞英語學者稱之為“標題語言”（headlines）。其中，標題中虛詞的省略就是它的重要特點之一。一般而言，標題中虛詞省略現象主要表現在以下幾個方面：

5.1冠詞基本省略。

例如：Tenth Of British Mackerel Catch Ground Into Feed.(A Tenth Of The British Mackeel Catch Ground Into Feed.)英國捕獲鰭魚一成碾為飼料。

Three G0rges Flooded By 'Farewell' Tourists.(The Three Gorges Flooded By 'Farewell' Tourists.)惜別之情難以擋游客蜂擁至三峽。

5.2聯系動詞通常省略。

例如：Three Dead After Inhaling Oven Gas.(Three Are Dead After Inhaling Oven Gas.吸入爐灶煤氣三人窒息身亡。

Clinton Inauguration Most Expensive Ever.(Clinton Inaugurati0n Is M0st Expensive Ever.)克氏就職典禮花費空前巨大。

5.3助動詞通常省略。

例如：Financier Killed By Burglars.(A Financier Is Killed By Burglars.)夜毛賊入室金融家遇害。

Pope To Visit Japan In February.(Pope Is To Visit Japan In February.)教皇擬于二月訪日。India Mending Fences.(India Is Mending Fences.)印度正在改善與鄰國的關系。

5.4連詞通常省略，并用逗號代替。

例如：Us，Vietnam Resume Talks.(Us And Vietnam Resume Talks.)美越恢復會談。

Nbc's President Robert Wright Seeks Big Acquisiti0ns, Ventures For The Network.(Nbc's President Robert Wright Seeks Big Acquistions And Ventures For The Network.)“強有力的伙伴”+“可觀的投資”――羅伯特董事長為nbc網絡擴展而奔走。此外，英語新聞標題還經常省去介詞、代詞等，這些詞的省略并不妨礙讀者的理解。

6欣賞與漢譯

6.1直譯或基本直譯

如果英語標題的含義明白、直接，譯成漢語以后中國讀者不至于產生理解上的困難，則可直譯或基本直譯。如：

Looking Back To Look Ahead.回首往昔展望未來。

America's Careening Foreign Policy.搖擺不定的美國對外政策。

Bill Clinton Assumes Office In White House As Us President.比爾，克林頓入主白宮，就任美國總統。（或譯：克林頓入主白宮，新總統始掌大權。）

Olympics Begin In Style;Swimmer Takes 1st Gold.奧運會隆重開幕 泳將奪首枚金牌。

6.2添加注釋性詞語

即使是明白易懂的新聞標題，我們在漢譯時也常需酌情加上邏輯主語，或新聞人物的國籍、消息的事發地點等等。總之，應兼顧中英語新聞標題之異同，適當增補有關介紹性、注釋性詞語以利讀者理解，避免產生誤會。例如：

Li Elected Cppcc Head.李（瑞環）當選為全國政協主席。

Lewis, Xie Voted World's Top Two.路（易斯）謝（軍）當選世界最佳男女（運動員）。Emperor's Visit A Milestone In Bilateral Ties.天皇訪華：（中日）雙邊關系的里程碑。Quake Death Toll Tops 5000.（日本限神地區）地震死亡人數己逾五千。

Young Wheelers, Big Dealers.青年摩托車手成了（保險公司）大主顧。

6.3體現原文修辭特點

如果英語標題寓意于某種修辭手段，如雙關、比喻、押韻等，譯成漢語以后中國讀者不至于產生理解上的困難，則應盡可能體現原標題的修辭特色。如：

押韻：After The Boom Everything Is Gloom.繁榮過后，盡是蕭條。（或譯：繁榮好景不再，蕭條接因而來。）

雙關：Soccer Kicks Off With Violence.足球開踢拳打腳踢。

借用典故：Liberty Mother Of Invention.自由是發明之母。

幽默：Accuser Accused.原告沒當成 反而成被告。

比喻：Middie East: A Cradle Of Terror.中東恐怖主義的搖籃。

6.4靈活處理修辭差異。

英語標題寓意于某種修辭手段，而這種修辭手段在語言轉換中如與漢語難以契合，則不妨意譯，即舍棄原來的英語標題，按內容概括出合適的譯文標題，切忌生搬硬套，譯成晦澀難懂的句子。同時適當照顧漢語新聞標題的特點，多用動詞、尾韻、對仗等修辭手段。如：押韻：Desperate Need, Desperate Deed.燃眉之急非常行動。

典故：1990: Year Of Marco Polo Chic.1990年：中國熱的一年。

夸張：A Vow To Zip His Lips.誓將守口如瓶。

雙關：'Silent' Office Workers Demand To Be Heard.“不聞不問”的辦公室員工 今后將不再不聞不問了。

比喻：Russian Reform Old Wine In New Bottle.俄羅斯改革新瓶裝陳酒。

可見，要譯好英語新聞標題，除了需要透徹地理解原文內涵，領悟其妙處外，還要善于比較研究英漢兩種語言新聞標題的特點，充分發揮漢語的優勢。

7.1逗號常被用來代替連詞“and”例如：

Belgium Supports Francs, Denies It Will Quit 'Snake'.(Belgium Supports The Francs And Denies It Will Quit The 'Snake'.)比利時支持法郎并否認將退出“蛇形浮動”。

Guangzhou Fair Closes, Trade Booms.(The Guangzhou Fair Closes And The Trade Booms.)廣交會閉幕交易興旺。

7.2冒號除了用在引語之前表示“說”外，還經常被用來代替聯系動詞“Be”。例如：

Yeltsin: Muslim Nati0ns Call For End To Tensi0n In Bosnia Hergezervena.(Yeltsin Says That Muslim Nations Call For An End To The Tensi0n In Bosnia Hergezervena.)葉利欽說：穆斯林國家呼吁盡早結束波黑緊張局勢。

7.3破折號常被放置在不用引號的引言前后，以引出說話者。例如：

Economy Grows Slowly As Unemployment, Inflation Rise-Economists.(Economists Say That The Economy Grows Slowly As The Unemployment And Inflation Rise.)經濟學家認為：失業率及通貨膨脹加劇使得經濟增長緩慢。

8語態

英語新聞標題中的動詞表示被動語態時，被動語態結構“be+過去分詞”形式中的助動詞“be”，通常被省略，也經常不用“by”來引出動作的執行者，剩下的過去分詞在標題里就可直接表示被動意義，讀者切忌將之誤解為該動詞的過去式。如：

Girl Of 18 Raped After Threat With Bread Knife.(A Girl Of 18 Raped After Threat With A Bread Knife.)餐刀威逼下，18歲少女遭強暴。

Van Goghs Recovered After Theft.(Van Goghs Are Recovered After The Theft.)梵高名畫竊而復得。

Father Jailed For Murder Of Daughter.(Father Is Jailed For The Murder Of His Daughter.)謀殺親生女兒父親鋃鐺入獄。

其實，讀者在廣泛接觸英語報刊時會發現，新聞標題使用動詞主動語態的頻率遠遠超過被動語態。因為從修辭學角度而言，主動語態比被動語態更加生動多彩且富有感染力，所表達的意義更為直接，或更具有說服力，使讀者感到真實可信，讀來朗朗上口，流利自然。英語新聞標題只有在事件或動作的接受者比執行者更重要時才使用被動語態，突出強調賓語部分，以引起讀者注意。這是因為讀者讀報時的心理狀態同看書或查閱資料時的情況不盡相同。人們往往是在就餐時或上班途中、候車、飯后用茶等較空閑時看報的，閱讀時思想往往不是完全集中的。只有當他們看到一條特別能引起他們興趣的標題時，才會把注意力全部集中起來，全神貫注的看下去。因此,英語新聞標題有時為突出動作的承受者通常采用被動語態，目的在于抓住讀者的注意力。

例如“500 Reported Killed In S.Korean Building Collapse”遠比“Collapse Claims 500 Lives In S.Korea”更為吸引人。兩條標題都起到了提示與濃縮韓國某百貨大樓倒塌致使五百人喪生這一新聞內容的作用，其中死亡人數是一個非常重要的內容。前旬雖為被動語態，卻以數詞開始，突出了這個重要內容，使它非常醒目，一下子吸引了讀者。
