一般來說，不同于研究生招生階段，招生的話語權多掌握在教授手里，哥倫比亞大學本科生階段，招生的決定權則更多地是落在負責招生的行政人員身上。同哥倫比亞大學一樣，大多數(shù)常春藤(Ivy League)學校本科生的招生都是由專門的行政人員來完成，而不會太多涉及負責教學的老師或者教授。下面我們就來看看哥倫比亞大學本科是如何進行招生的吧。哥倫比亞大學本科招生第一步，區(qū)域內(nèi)初選

首先，不同的招生辦人員，按照生源的區(qū)域region單獨進行第一輪篩選。由相同的招生辦人員進行第一輪初選，篩選標準主要分三個類別，分別是：NO.1 Social，NO.2 Academic，NO.3 Intellectual。三個類別同等重要。

social方面主要是指領導力，加入各種社團、興趣特長的情況。

academic主要是指SAT、TOFEL以及高中階段各科成績。當我問到中國高考成績是否也作為他們錄取的參考的時候，哥倫比亞大學本科生招生辦副主任給予了否定。

Intellectual方面，主要看重的是學生的閱讀能力，比如是否讀過一些公認的、有影響力的好書，課外會讀一些什么有趣的書，或者讀過專業(yè)領域內(nèi)哪些重要的書籍，是否了解專業(yè)領域內(nèi)發(fā)生的重大事件以及當前專業(yè)發(fā)展的趨勢等。重點看的就是你是否了解你想學的專業(yè)。用他的話說，intellectual方面可以衡量學生是否真的對該學科感興趣，一旦這個學生真的對該學科感興趣，他一定會自己去搜尋并試圖了解更多該領域相關的研究或者新聞。哥倫比亞大學本科招生第二步，小組討論

在進行完第一輪個人篩選后，負責不同區(qū)域招生的人員聚在一起，一般3-4人，進行小組討論，比如陳述同意招收這個學生的原因，或者不錄取的原因。小組討論后，招生名單最終確定。

一般來說，他們會按照9%的錄取率發(fā)放錄取通知書，因為部分收到錄取通知書的同學，會選擇就讀其他學校，這樣一來，通常最終入學率為5%，這也是他們預估的理想數(shù)值。值得一提的是，當與他談到很多高中畢業(yè)生，即便是美國本土高中畢業(yè)生未必真正知道自己想學什么，所以可能很難到達他們所期待的Intellectual的要求的時候，他的回答是：美國的大學很多，對于不了解自己喜好和興趣的申請者，他們完全可以去其他學校，不一定要選擇哥倫比亞大學。所以，了解自己的選擇，陳述自己的理由在申請名校的時候顯得尤為重要。而談到花在每個學生申請材料上的時間的問題，他的問答是：因材料而異。而有一點是可以肯定的，那就是不管這個學生的材料開始表現(xiàn)得有多強或者多弱，作為專業(yè)的招生人員，他們還是會go over學生的所有網(wǎng)上申請材料。
