首先，不同的招生辦人員，按照生源的區(qū)域region單獨進行第一輪篩選。由相同的招生辦人員進行第一輪初選，篩選標準主要分三個類別，分別是：NO.1 Social，NO.2 Academic，NO.3 Intellectual。三個類別同等重要。

social方面主要是指領(lǐng)導(dǎo)力，加入各種社團、興趣特長的情況。

academic主要是指SAT、TOFEL以及高中階段各科成績。當我問到中國高考成績是否也作為他們錄取的參考的時候，哥倫比亞大學(xué)本科生招生辦副主任給予了否定。

Intellectual方面，主要看重的是學(xué)生的閱讀能力，比如是否讀過一些公認的、有影響力的好書，課外會讀一些什么有趣的書，或者讀過專業(yè)領(lǐng)域內(nèi)哪些重要的書籍，是否了解專業(yè)領(lǐng)域內(nèi)發(fā)生的重大事件以及當前專業(yè)發(fā)展的趨勢等。重點看的就是你是否了解你想學(xué)的專業(yè)。用他的話說，intellectual方面可以衡量學(xué)生是否真的對該學(xué)科感興趣，一旦這個學(xué)生真的對該學(xué)科感興趣，他一定會自己去搜尋并試圖了解更多該領(lǐng)域相關(guān)的研究或者新聞。哥倫比亞大學(xué)本科招生第二步，小組討論
