The catcher in the Rye is a typical novel which reflects the confusion and rebel of the 1950s in America history.From year 1945-1955, the American society seemed to be blissful on the surface while the fear of uncertainty caused by the growing communist challenge was affecting the culture of society.People became paranoiac and youngsters of the time became rebel or even violent resulting from the lost of aim and belief.Holton, the main character of this novel, is portrayed by the author as a typical teenager of the time.Born in a wealthy middle class family, Holton was supposed to live a good life.However, he expelled from school four times, not dare to go home, wandering alone in York city one day and two nights, living in small inn, going to nightclubs, being alcoholism.He wanted to escape from the real world because he feel depressed, confused, filled with all sorts of unrealistic fantasies.This novel can be defined as both the tragedy of Holton's and the author Salinger, who is a young people of that generation.In 1950, the Korean War started, which was an extension of the Cold War which strengthened the hostilities and conflicts between America and the Soviet Union.It definitely leaded to the panic of normal people because they were uncertain about the result of the competition between the superpowers.Teenagers were emotionally confused of the changing society, doubting their life and their future.Salinger has also written other novels such as Nine Stories, a collection of short stories even more depressed than The catcher in the Rye, which at least have expressed some hope at the end of the novel.Actually, characters like Holton become popular at that time, not in
literature only.In the film Rebel Without a Cause describe a very similar situation, the tendency of rebel and violence among youngsters in American culture at that time.In the early 1950s, the accumulation of emotions and conflicts were bedding the transform a few years later, which had significant influence on American culture of that period.

在當代世界文學中,有一部書是被公認的現(xiàn)代經(jīng)典,那就是塞林格的《麥田里的守望者》,成人閱讀這本書,可以人增加對少年的理解。
作者生動細致地描繪了一個無產(chǎn)階級子弟的苦悶,彷徨的精神世界,真實地揭露了資本主義社會精神文明的實質,人活著除了物質生活之外,還需要有精神生活,而且在一個比較富裕的社會里,精神生活往往比物質生活更為重要,本書中的主人公霍爾頓〃考爾菲便是美國五十年代“垮掉分子”的代表,但垮得還不到吸毒,群居的地步。霍爾頓尚想探索和追求理想,因此他向往東方哲學,提出長大長人后想當一個“麥田里的守望者”。

也就認為無法好好念書。因此他的不用功實質上是對資產(chǎn)階級現(xiàn)行教育制度的一種反抗,另一方面,在他那樣的生活的環(huán)境里,他又能找到什么可貴的精神寄托或崇高的理想信念呢?學校里的老師大部分都是勢利的偽君子。連他所唯一敬佩的一位老師后來發(fā)現(xiàn)也可能是個搞同性戀的,而這位老師諄諄教導他的,也只是資產(chǎn)階級利已主義的信條“一個不成熟的男子的標志是他愿意為某種事業(yè)英勇地互去,一個成熟的男子的標志是他愿意為某種事業(yè)卑賤地活者。”
他是青春期的少年代表,從他的經(jīng)歷里可以清楚的看到與家長的代溝,家長總希望他像哥哥一樣可以成為出人頭地的人,可是他的理想也只是做一個麥田里的守望者,站在懸崖上,捉住不斷奔跑的孩子。大人總認為霍爾頓是一個敗家子,是一個不良少年。但他有自己的思想,在他那半成熟的心中還存留著點點夢想,即使它在那污濁的世道變得那樣的細微渺小。
他盡管看慣資本主義的世道,苦悶,彷徨,那那種不切實際的幻想安慰自己,自欺欺人,最后仍不免對現(xiàn)實社會妥協(xié),成不了真正的叛逆,這可以是說是作者塞林格和他筆下人物霍爾頓的悲劇所在,作者描繪了霍爾頓的精神世界的各個方面,既揭示了他受環(huán)境影響頹廢、沒落的一面,也寫出了他純樸敏感,善良的一面。霍爾頓是明智的,是聰明的,他看透了社會的本質。他的樸素和善良,是他所在的年代很少的,雖然他的有些思想還比較幼稚,雖然他有許許多多的缺點,但他反抗現(xiàn)實、向往美好世界的純潔的一面是不可忽視的。
作者借助筆下的霍爾頓,活靈活現(xiàn)的展現(xiàn)了自己的想法,用一個處于青春期的孩子的口吻講述了一個關于那所謂“叛逆”的想法,講述了成熟與不成熟之間的過渡,大人與青春期少年之間的代溝。霍爾頓的那個只想做一個麥田里的守望者的夢想,那個為了不讓小孩子掉下懸崖而站在懸崖邊救孩子的形象,那個純潔無私的想法,天真幼稚卻又些許成熟的心事,漸漸放大……

“無論如何,我總是在幻想,有那么一幫孩子在一片麥田里玩。成千上萬個孩子,身邊沒有一個人——沒有一個大人,我的意思是——我除外。而我,則在那混帳的懸崖邊站著。我的任務就是在那里守望,如果有哪個小孩向懸崖這邊狂奔過來,我便抓住他——我意思是孩子們都在奔跑,也不知道自己向什么地方跑,我要從什么地方出來,抓住他們。我每天就干這件事。我只是想當一個麥田里的守望者而已。”

有一天,剛參加完中考的女兒對我說:“爸爸,咱們學校圖書室里有沒有《麥田里的守望者》這本書?”我說:“你想看嗎?我給你找找看吧。” 拿到這本書后,女兒如饑似渴地把它讀完了,我問她:“你覺得這本書怎么樣?它的主題是什么?”
“不怎么樣”,女兒說。“咦?”我感到有點納悶,一本風靡世界的優(yōu)秀名著,在孩子的眼中第一感覺竟然是不怎么樣,真讓人不可思議!“怎么不怎么樣?”我問。女兒說:“就是臟話太多了,動不動就是‘他媽的’。” “那它又表達了什么主題呢?”我接著問。女兒說:“作者的理想就是要當一個麥田里的守望者。”
“是像稻草人一樣嗎?”妻插了一句。“哪兒啊!”女兒笑著,把書翻到折角的一頁遞給媽媽說:“看看這一段,他就是想要把在麥田里快樂的瘋跑向懸崖邊的孩子抓住,防止他們掉下去。”
又過了幾天,妻也把這本書讀完了。“看看人家美國,在那個時候教育就那么發(fā)達,中學生兩個人住一間宿舍,而且還有洗手間,有淋浴。咱們國家現(xiàn)在大學生有這個待遇嗎?”女兒插了一句:“對了爸爸,高中能洗澡嗎?”“能吧,”我說:“高中宿舍里有洗刷間,可以洗,但肯定不如在家里方便。”其實我們這里高中學校的條件雖然有了很大的改善,但學生在宿舍里洗澡還是有一定困難的,這也難怪妻的“崇洋媚外”。
斷斷續(xù)續(xù)地,我也把這本書讀完了。在這本書中我更多地看到了一個成長中的少年對現(xiàn)實生活的迷茫、矛盾,和對理想的探求歷程。
作為一名老師來說,小說的主人公霍爾頓的確不是一名合格的學生——在他身上有著那個時候很多學生都有的一些惡習——吸煙、喝酒、滿嘴臟話、與同學打架,對學習不感興趣以致四門功課有三門不及格而被學校開除(從書上看這已經(jīng)是第四次了),在回家途中還有一次“不成功的招妓”。但是,他的對老師的尊敬、對妹妹發(fā)自內(nèi)心的深切的喜愛、以及他內(nèi)心深處的那份善良的流露、因其對自由快樂的向往和對現(xiàn)實的無奈而渴望做一個“麥田里的守望者”的理想還是讓我對他、對這個世界的未來充滿希望。
從霍爾頓與他的同學身上,我們看到了當時美國中學教育的一個“特點”:學生在物質條件優(yōu)越的學習環(huán)境里并沒有感受到學習的快樂。而造成這種狀況的原因,我們在斯賓塞先生和安托尼利先生兩位老師和“最虛偽”的校長老哈斯身
上可以找到答案。
兩位老師的敬業(yè)精神和對學生在學業(yè)上的關心是非常值得我們學習的,但是他們的那種教育方式又是我們要努力改變的。小說中提到的第一位老師——老斯賓塞先生,也許是想為他的一個被開除的學生在即將離開學校的時候,給孩子指出他學習上的問題,給孩子一些忠告或幫助,所以讓霍爾頓到他家去一次,而當時這位老先生正臥病在床。結果,當真正面對霍爾頓的時候,老先生又提到了“狗屁球賽”(作者認為的)、“純粹是裝模裝樣”的“最善良”的父母、絲毫沒有自信的學習成績,“像拿著臭屎似的”選讀了“我”那張“混賬試卷”,而這些卻無一不是對作者無情的“嘲諷”,以至于讓“我開始有點兒痛恨他了”。特別是老先生“將那封短信高聲讀出來”,讓“我永遠都無法原諒他”。很難想象,對于一個不成功的學生來說,他怎么能忍受這樣“不懷好意”的譏諷”,再加上讓“我無法忍受”的“混賬中學埃克頓·希爾斯”的“最虛偽”的校長老哈斯,以至于“我真待不下去了”——先生家還是學校?兩者都是!
第二位老師——“安托尼利先生是我一生中遇到過的最優(yōu)秀的老師”,也是作者在向他的妹妹表達了“當一個麥田的守望者”的愿望以后,非常想要傾訴的人。但真正面對安托尼利先生的“諄諄誘導”,“我”又“確實不愿認真地思考”,以至于對先生寫的紙條“立即讀了一遍”,便“裝入衣兜中”。但從紙條上的這兩句話:“一個尚未成熟的男子的標志是他愿意為某種事業(yè)英勇地獻身,一個成熟的男子的標志是他愿意為某種事業(yè)卑賤地生活”,我們可以看出當時成人的思想也有其混沌的一面,即便不是,那也不是一種積極的思想,用這樣一種思想來引導一個十五、六歲的少年,結果只能適得其反。更何況這個少年正處于對現(xiàn)實世界的迷惘、矛盾、彷徨、焦慮,對成人的不信任甚至是厭惡的,無奈的成長階段。最終,睡夢中的“我”,因為對安托尼利先生性變態(tài)(也可能只是老師對學生的關心而已,但作者實在是對“性變態(tài)”太敏感了,因為他已經(jīng)至少有二十多次遇到過類似的情況了。)的極度恐懼而逃了出來。由此“我”下定決心離開這個地方——掙脫“現(xiàn)實”去流浪。
最終讓“我”留下來的是“我”的妹妹,妹妹的善良、聰明、可愛,甚至要跟“我”一起去流浪的執(zhí)著打動了“我”。還有妹妹騎在木馬上快樂的笑聲,讓“我”感到了從未有過的真正的快樂,正是這份快樂讓“我”豁然回歸到現(xiàn)實的生活。
從一定意義上說,在物質生活日益發(fā)展的今天,我們身邊那些處于青春期的、“艱難”成長的少年,很多人都有著霍爾頓所面臨的這種困境。正如這本書的推薦理由所說“主人公的經(jīng)歷和思想在青少年中引起強烈共鳴,??因為這部小說道出了他們的心聲,反映了他們的理想、苦悶和愿望。”如何讓他們在“一眼望不到邊的‘麥田’里快樂的奔跑”,而又不會迷失自我,跌入“懸崖”,我們?nèi)沃囟肋h。
