一。不可“望文生義”的短語

1.Do you have matches？

你需要幫忙嗎？

“名詞match本意是“火柴”，這里用的就是詞的本意。但問這句話的人也可能在詢問你是否需要幫助。火柴是很小的一樣東西，如果你手負重物，可能連小小的火柴也拿不出來呢。可以設想一下場景：當你一手拿著一杯酒，兩只手都占著，忽然一個人問你“You havematches?”，你就要想一想，人家是真的要抽煙所以向你借火柴，還是只是開玩笑地問你是不是需要幫忙。這是口語中經常聽到的一句話，如果別人是想幫忙，你可千萬別誤以為人家真的是向你要火柴。”

2.Small beer

Small beer是“小啤酒”的意思嗎？難道啤酒還分大小？其實，在英國smallbeer指的是口味比較淡的啤酒，但是在美語中則是“少量啤酒”的意思。比如說夏天有客人來訪，問他要喝些什么：Anything todrink？客人就可能回答說：“I'll have a small beer(給我一點兒啤酒。)”比喻用法中說的smallbeer，指規模或者格局不大的事物。自以為了不起，不是小人物的人：He thinks no small beer ofhimself.Be small beer常用作與人比較的表現。

口語中常用small beer作形容詞，因此開快餐店的朋友可以說：Ours is a small-beer fast-foodjoint beside McDonald。

3.Skin off one's nose

從字面上解釋是：不會從我鼻子上掉皮。但是，你要是在跟別人講話的時候用這個俗語的話，你真正的意思是：這件事不是你的問題，也不是你的麻煩，而你也不在乎。

例子：“Hey, it's no skin off my nose if Susie's going out nowwith that guy!I don't care what she does--I broke up with her amonth ago, when I met Karen.Karen's a lot more my style.”

4.To save one's skin

To save one'sskin的意思從表面看來是：救了某人的皮。但是，實際的意思是：安全地逃出了危險的境地，沒有受到傷害。

例子：“My son was in a bad auto accident last week.The other carwent through a red light and smashed into him.It wrecked his car,but he was wearing his seat belt and that saved his skin--hewalked away without a scratch.”
