那么為什么要記住關(guān)于第一棵圣誕樹的回憶呢？艾略特難得樂觀地說(shuō)，當(dāng)你被無(wú)聊的生活慣性左右，當(dāng)你感到疲乏，厭倦，當(dāng)你感受到死亡，失意時(shí)，那種童年極度欣喜的體驗(yàn)隨著時(shí)間慢慢淡化，但也不至于在日后的老成世故中被徹底遺忘。

可是現(xiàn)實(shí)哪有那么簡(jiǎn)單，對(duì)于西方人來(lái)說(shuō)，過圣誕節(jié)也像咱過年一樣一年又一年，過來(lái)過去還是差不多的老調(diào)調(diào)。每年不一樣的圣誕樹，為了環(huán)保可能都不用真的松樹了，用完了再栽到地里去；往年的裝飾品再拿出來(lái)擺一擺；程式化的圣誕大餐；買禮品的各種焦慮，收到各種其實(shí)并不是真心想要的禮物；去教堂作禮拜唱頌歌。在一年又一年的消磨中，童年的興奮勁兒早都消失殆盡。

可艾略特還是很樂觀地說(shuō)，從第一個(gè)到你此生最后一個(gè)圣誕節(jié)的全部零碎回憶加起來(lái)，也能匯聚成一個(gè)扎實(shí)完整的雪球，就像回到詩(shī)中第一節(jié)中描繪孩子們高高興興的情景一樣。

在結(jié)尾，已經(jīng)信教的艾略特自然用了基督降臨和基督重生的宗教隱喻，但更廣義上也指明了俗世中生與死的聯(lián)系。常青樹當(dāng)然不僅僅指的宗教，栽培的也不僅僅是樹。The Night Before Christmas
