讀書計劃是在申請過程中按照學校的要求來寫一篇有關申請人過去背景，目前成就和未來目標的文章，一篇成功的讀書計劃不但應語言流暢，且文章邏輯嚴謹，層次分明，能充分顯示申請人的才華并抓住審閱人的注意力。要寫出這樣的文章，既使對于母語為英語的澳大利亞人來說都是十分不易的，更不要說對于母語為非英語的中國學生。但是澳大利亞的學校在讀書計劃這項材料上并不對中國學生降低要求，他們認為既然申請人被錄取后會與澳大利亞學生一起學習，那么就應用同樣的標準衡量國際學生，一篇成功優秀的讀書計劃不僅僅要求文法上沒有錯誤，還要求語言流暢并具有感染力與吸引力，同時要說明自己的整體素質與學術成就，這的確不是一件容易的事。許多學生為了寫一篇優秀的讀書計劃要花上一個月的時間，這并不奇怪。
