reached me, I had with me a learned young doctor from Rome.I told him about the quarrel between Shylock and Antonio.We studied many lawbooks and he knows what I would say.I ask you to let him stand in my place and give judgement.He is young, but I never knew so young a body with so wise a head.”

After the letter has been read out to the court, Portia, in lawyer's clothes, enters the

安：真不知道我為什么會這樣悶悶不樂。你們說你們見我的樣子心里覺得很厭煩，其實我自己也覺得很厭煩，可是我怎樣會讓憂愁沾上身，這種簡直讓我成了一個傻子！（抱怨地舉著雙手，邊說邊搖頭嘆息）薩：您的心是跟著您那些扯著帆的大船在海上顛蕩的，它們就像水上的達官富紳，炫示著它們的豪華。（頓一下）可是，相信我，老兄，要是我也有這么一筆買賣在外洋，我也會用一大部分心思牽掛它，我一定會常常觀測風的方向，查看港口的名字，凡是足以使我擔心的一切，也都會使我憂愁。

安：你說的對，我的朋友，但是我又相信，我的買賣的成敗并不完全寄托在一艘船上，更不是依賴著一處地方，我的全部財產，也不會因為這一年的盈虧而受影響，所以單單是這些貨船還不足以使我如此憂愁。薩：（有些驚訝，望著安）啊！那么您是在戀愛了？（開玩笑道）安：嘔！不，不，不。你說的是那兒的話啊。（搖頭擺手道）

羅：（笑著回答）噢，有，當然有，我正想請您一塊去喝點雞尾酒呢，現在我們就去！（轉向巴薩尼奧）巴薩尼奧先生，您現在已經找到你要找的人了，我們要少陪拉，可是你千萬別忘了吃飯時咱們在什么地方會面。

巴：是的，羅蘭佐，我不會忘的，你放心吧！

羅：（轉向安東尼奧）安東尼奧先生，您的臉色不大好，您把世間的事看的太認真了，一個人思慮太多，就會失去做人的樂趣。相信我，您近來真是變的太厲害啦！安：放心吧！我親愛的羅蘭佐，我不會有事的。

薩：（催促道）好了，羅蘭佐，仁慈的上帝會保佑我們尊敬的安東尼奧先生的，他是不會有事，讓我們抓緊時間吧！

尼：要是你能照著它去做，那就更好了。

鮑：（低頭嘆息道）倘使做一件事，就跟知道應該做什么事一樣容易，那么小教堂都要變成大禮堂，窮人的草屋都要變成王侯的宮殿了，一個好的教師才會遵從他自己的教誨，理智可以制定法律來約束感情，可是熱情激動起來，就會把冷酷的法令蔑棄不顧，年輕人是一頭不受拘束的野兔子，會跳過老年人所設的理智的藩籬，可是，我這樣大發議論，既不會幫我選中我的意中人，又不能使我屏棄我所厭惡得人（用手依次撫過三個盒子，面向觀眾，抬起雙手）一個活著的女兒的意志，卻要被一個死了的父親的遺囑所鉗制。尼利莎，像這樣不能選擇，也不能拒絕，不是太叫人難堪了嗎？

夏：我倒忘了，正是三個月，您對我說過，好，您的借據呢？讓我瞧一瞧，可是聽著，好象您說您從來不講利息的。

夏：噢！我的上帝啊，您聽見了嗎？安東尼奧是多么仁慈，多么慷慨啊！巴：你想怎么樣，夏洛克。

尼：（上）我親愛的小姐，請您坐下來歇一歇好不好，您已經這樣來回走了一早上了，難道您想讓您憂愁的心再承受身體上的疲憊嗎？

鮑：嘔，我親愛的尼利莎，倘若這樣能減輕我的憂愁，那么我寧愿走上一百年。

尼：好啦，小姐，您還是歇一會吧！那來選匣子的摩洛哥親王和阿爾恭親王恐怕馬上就到了。鮑：這真是個恐怖的時刻！

鮑；尊貴的親王殿下，對今天您來選擇，我倒并不單單憑信一雙善于挑剔的少女的眼睛，而且我的命運，由抽簽決定，自己也沒有任意取舍的權利，可是我的父親倘不曾用他的遠見把我束縛了，使我只能委身于按照他所規定的方法，贏得我的男子，那么您，聲明卓著的王子，您的容貌在忘我心目之中，并不比其他人遜色！

摩：單是您這一番美意，已使我激動萬分了，所以請您帶我去瞧瞧那幾個匣子，試一試我的命運吧！我相信，上帝會垂青于我的。

鮑；您必須信任命運，或者死了心放棄選擇的嘗試，或者在您選擇之前，立下一個誓言，要是選不中，終身不在向任何女子求婚，所以您是考慮考慮吧！8 接上

鮑：這三只匣子中間，有一只里面藏著我的小像，您要是選中了那一只，我就屬于您了。

摩：求神明指示我，讓我選中吧！（雙手合拳向天祈求，而后轉向桌前）我可得小心呀！（自言自語道）我且把那匣子上的字都仔細地推敲一遍，哪個鉛匣子上說什么：“誰選擇了我，必須準備把他所有的一切作為犧牲？”為什么？為了鉛嗎？為了這沉重的鉛而犧牲一切，這話可有些嚇人！那銀匣子上寫的：“誰選擇了我，將要得到他所應該得到的東西。”得到他應得到的東西！（伸手向匣子，又頓住）且慢！憑我的財富難道配不上這位小姐嗎？倘這樣說那我未免太小看自己了，講到家世，財產，人品，教養，我哪點，配不上她那么我所應得的東西一定就是這個了。（伸手去取，卻又頓住）不忙，讓我在來看看這只金匣子“誰選擇了我，將得到眾人所希求的東西”。啊！那正是這位小姐了，整個世界都在希求她，他們從地球的四角迢迢而來，頂禮這位塵世的真仙，那廣瀚的海洋的沙漠已成了各國王子們前來瞻仰這美貌的天仙的通衢大道。這樣一顆珍貴的珠寶，恐怕只有裝在這昂貴的金匣子中才恰當，那么我就選它了！（說著雙手捧起金匣子，向鮑西亞。

鮑：親王，請您拿了鑰匙，打開這匣子看看吧，如果里邊有我的小像，那么我就屬于您了。

摩：（欣然結果鑰匙，開匣視之）啊！該死，這是什么？這分明是一具骷髏，那空空的眼眶里藏著一張有字的紙卷。且讓我看看上面寫的什么，發光的不是黃金，圣賢沒有騙人，多少世人出賣了一生，不過看到了我的外形，螻蟻占據著鍍金的墳。你要是又大膽又聰明，就不會得到這樣的回音！啊！悲傷充塞我的心胸，莫怪我這敗軍之將去的匆匆（做悲痛狀下）

鮑：他去的到還知趣，但愿像他一樣膚色的，都選不中。尼：（上）小姐，哪個親王去的好狼狽呦！

鮑：唉！也難怪他只看重貴重的黃金，卻不知美麗的外表下往往隱藏著罪惡的本質。尼：小姐，這下你可高興了吧！鮑：姑且算過去了一劫吧！

仆人：（上）小姐，阿爾恭親王駕到。

Rich and moving story of family ties, witty dialogue, the plot turn, exaggerated the circumstances of Comedy, romance and legend is full of color.Is intertwined with friendship, love, love the world and lead us to understanding what is important in life.The play tells a story that happens in Italy.A moneyless young Venetian, Bassanio, is making preparations to propose to Portia, a rich beauty of Belmont.He needs money and appeals to his friend Antonio, a merchant of Venice, for help.But Antonio?s money is invested in ships at sea.To help Bassanio in his courtship, he borrows money from Shylock the Jewish usurer.Shylock, who has been insulted by Antonio and other Christians, however, agrees to lend the money on the condition that if the loan is not paid in time, he may cut a pound of flesh from Antonio?s body.With this money, Bassanio goes to Belmont and succeed in the marriage with Portia.But news comes that Antonio?s ship sank and can?t return on time so he cannot pay the loan.Shylock demands his pound of flesh.The case is brought before the court.Antonio is in danger.At the critical moment, a young doctor of law arrives at the court.He appeals to Shylock for mercy with a moving speech, but in vain.Then the doctor admits the validity of Shylock?s claim, but warns him, under pain of death, that he must fulfill the every letter of his bond, taking no more and no less than one pound of flesh, and spilling no drop of blood.Seeing himself thus cornered, the Jew has no choice but to obey the verdict of the court.To everyone?s surprise, the young doctor of law who saves the life of Antonio is Portia in disguise.Finally they live together happily.The story has a happy ending in theory.But I don?t think the end is really happy and is a kind of “grave comedy”.In this single-minded pursuit of a pound of flesh, his frequent mentions of the cruelty he has endured at Christian hands make it hard for us to label him a natural born monster.In one of Shakespeare?s most famous monologues, for example, Shylock argues that Jews are humans and calls his quest for vengeance the product of lessons taught to him by the cruelty of Venetian citizens.On the other hand, Shylock?s coldly calculated attempt to revenge the wrongs done to him by murdering his persecutor, Antonio, prevents us from viewing him in a primarily positive light.Shakespeare gives us unmistakably human moments, but he often steers us against Shylock as well, painting him as a miserly, cruel, and prosaic figure.But I think Shylock suffers much discrimination for he is a Jew.It?s unfair.All men were born equally.We can learn much from the play.Money is important, but there are many far more important things in this world.Do not be fooled by the surface.In our real live we should threat everyone equally and do not have color vision to look at other people.And when we meet with unexpected difficulties, we should keep calm and solve it skillfully just as Portia does......
