第一篇：從奧巴馬演說中看英語詞匯應用

怎樣使一篇英語文章的語言豐富、不枯燥也許令很多英語初學者頭疼。原因大體分為：一是由于自己的單詞量不大，寫來寫去總是幾個句型和熟得不能再熟的單詞，怎么看怎么像小學生作文一樣提不起高度。二是盡管背了很多單詞，但只處于認知的高度，怎樣使用就不會了。這就是我們常說的“吃”了很多但“倒不出來”。所以，有一些同學因此產(chǎn)生逆反心理，認為學好英語尤其是英語寫作簡直比登天還難，自信心受挫。那么，怎樣在英語寫作中巧妙運用單詞，達到妙筆生花呢？今天我們從剛當選美國總統(tǒng)的奧巴馬演講中的幾個片斷來分析一下英語詞匯的運用。

If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.（如果現(xiàn)在仍然有人在那里懷疑著美國是不是任何事情都可能發(fā)生的地方，疑惑于我們國家的締造者們的夢想是否還鮮活地存在于這個時代，對我們民主的力量打上問號的話，今夜就是你的答案。）奧巴馬勝利演講詞的第一部分用了一個氣勢恢宏的排比句，句子中的三個謂語動詞值得我們學習：doubt、wonder、question。這三個詞意相近，指懷疑。為了避免詞語的重復使用，運用了三個近義詞，這種現(xiàn)象在英語寫作中稱為variety，多樣性。在寫作中我們可以通過意譯，paraphrase來練習。比如，我們剛剛學到了一個詞語，important，重要，那么除了這一個詞，還有其他的表達方式嗎？significant,是和important 互換率最高的詞語?！璫ome from everything else、put…first、play a role in…等都是與“重要”意思相近的短語，大家在寫作中應該學著交換使用。

那么這些表達我們怎么在平時積累到呢？

首先，需要一本好字典。單詞的釋義一定要有英英解釋，并且最好能把它背下來。推薦大家使用牛津高階詞典和柯林斯詞典。比如剛才提到的important在柯林斯詞典里的英文解釋是 significant, high-valued and necessary。

It’s the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor… It’s the answer that led those who’ve been told for so long by so many to be cynical and fearful and doubtful about what we can achieve to put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day.（這是美國人共同說出的答案，無論老還是少，富還是窮，長久以來，很多人一再被告知，要對我們所能取得的成績極盡譏諷、擔憂和懷疑之能事，但這個答案讓這些人伸出手來把握歷史之弧，并再次使它朝向美好明天的希望延伸。）

這句話里young and old、rich and poor指代老少、窮富之人，cynical、fearful, doubtful 是形容一些人的態(tài)度，譏諷，擔憂和懷疑?？雌饋砗唵危缱屚瑢W們自己表達的話，可能就不這么精確了。這在英語寫作中叫平行結(jié)構(gòu)，和中文的對偶對仗有點類似。如果前面一句你用youngsters and old people、rich people and who are poor，雖然意思沒變，但語言不工整也不精煉。

平行結(jié)構(gòu)在英語寫作中應用廣泛，大家要學會找到哪些地方需要平行結(jié)構(gòu)并且怎樣保持其語法結(jié)構(gòu)的一致。做個練習：Bitterly、angrily、and with tears in her eyes、Jane finally retired.Bitterly, angrily 和with tears in her eyes都是形容Jane退休時的心情，那么我們是否可以試著把它們?nèi)齻€變成同樣的語法結(jié)構(gòu)？Bitterly、angrily and tearfully、Jane finally retired.這樣一來，語言工整順暢得多了。

And I would not be standing here without the unyielding support of my best friend for the last 16 years, the rock of my family, the love of my life, the nation’s next first lady, Michelle Obama.這是奧巴馬對于他妻子的致謝之辭。I would not be standing here without是一個常用的致謝詞，表示沒有…的支持就不會有今天的成就，我們可以借鑒來，把它看作寫作中的一種強調(diào)句式。比如，米是中國人不可缺少的食物這句話，可以說Rice is indispensible to Chinese people.或是再強調(diào)一些的話就可以說 People in China cannot live one day without rice.Unyielding 這個詞的意思是strong、fixed，常用于書面語，翻譯成強有力的或不懈的。比如：His unyielding attitude on this subject was that since he had done it, so could everyone.最后讓我們來看看他是怎樣形容摯愛，the rock of my family，the love of my life.家庭的基石，一生的摯愛。對于另一半的稱呼就像中文一樣，英文中也有很多，比如 light of my life、better half、perfect match, etc.

第二篇：奧巴馬演說

奧巴馬連任勝選演講稿全文

奧巴馬昨晚還準備了敗選演講稿，今晚就可以睡羅姆尼的太太了！命啊

看報道，奧巴馬贏了！但是他承認自己準備了敗選的講演稿。他說：“你總是要做兩篇講演稿的準備，因為你不能把所有事情都想當然?！眾W巴馬也對羅姆尼的表現(xiàn)表示祝賀。奧巴馬說：“我想我們都會有一個美好的夜晚。”

呵呵！而羅姆尼在總統(tǒng)揭曉前一天晚上，還躊躇滿志，非常自信地對老婆說：“太太，明天晚上你就能跟美國總統(tǒng)睡覺了！”奧巴馬勝選。老婆問羅姆尼：“你看今晚我到白宮去睡呢，還是叫奧巴馬到咱家里來？”

And I saw it just the other day, in Mentor, Ohio wehre a father told the story of his eight-year-old daughter who’s long battle with leukemia nearly cost their family everything had it not been for healthc are reform passing just a few months before.The insurance company was about to stop paying for her care.I had an opportunity to not just talk to the father but meet this incredible daughter of his, and when he spoke to the crowd listening to that father’ story, every parent in that room had tears in their eyes because we knew that little girl could be our own.And I know that every American wants her future to be just as bright.That’s who we are.That’s the country I’m so proud to lead as your president.我們還看到，幾天前，俄亥俄州一個父親說他有一個八歲的女兒，女孩的白血病使他的家庭一貧如洗，他們之前并沒有得到醫(yī)療保障，后來他們受利于幾個月前剛剛通過的醫(yī)改方案，使他們能夠支付起醫(yī)療費。我和這位父親，還有他的女兒都見面了，當他說的時候，在場所有的父母都落淚了，因為我們知道，他的女兒也可能是我們的女兒，我們都希望自己的孩子未來充滿光芒，這是每個父母的希望，這是我身為總統(tǒng)引以為豪的。

Keynote Address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention

| July 27, 2004

On behalf of the great state of Illinois, crossroads of a nation, land of Lincoln, let me express my deep gratitude for the privilege of addressing this convention.Tonight is a particular honor for me because, let's face it, my presence on this stage is pretty unlikely.My father was a foreign student, born and raised in a small village in Kenya.He grew up herding goats, went to school in a tin-roof shack.His father, my grandfather, was a cook, a domestic servant.But my grandfather had larger dreams for his son.Through hard work and perseverance my father got a scholarship to study in a magical place: America, which stood as a beacon of freedom and opportunity to so many who had come before.While studying here, my father met my mother.She was born in a town on the other side of the world, in Kansas.Her father worked on oil rigs and farms through most of the Depression.The day after Pearl Harbor he signed up for duty, joined Patton's army and marched across Europe.Back home, my grandmother raised their baby and went to work on a bomber assembly line.After the war, they studied on the GI Bill, bought a house through FHA, and moved west in search of opportunity.And they, too, had big dreams for their daughter, a common dream, born of two continents.My parents shared not only an improbable love;they shared an abiding faith in the possibilities of this nation.They would give me an African name, Barack, or “blessed,” believing that in a tolerant America your name is no barrier to success.They imagined me going to the best schools in the land, even though they weren't rich, because in a generous America you don't have to be rich to achieve your potential.They are both passed away now.Yet, I know that, on this night, they look down on me with pride.I stand here today, grateful for the diversity of my heritage, aware that my parents' dreams live on in my precious daughters.I stand here knowing that my story is part of the larger American story, that I owe a debt to all of those who came before me, and that, in no other country on earth, is my story even possible.Tonight, we gather to affirm the greatness of our nation, not because of the height of our skyscrapers, or the power of our military, or the size of our economy.Our pride is based on a very simple premise, summed up in a declaration made over two hundred years ago, “We hold these truths to he self-evident, that all men are created equal.That they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights.That among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

That is the true genius of America, a faith in the simple dreams of its people, the insistence on small miracles.That we can tuck in our children at night and know they are fed and clothed and safe from harm.That we can say what we think, write what we think, without hearing a sudden knock on the door.That we can have an idea and start our own business without paying a bribe or hiring somebody's son.That we can participate in the political process without fear of retribution, and that our votes will he countedDemocrats, Republicans, IndependentsI am my brother's keeper, I am my sister's keeperthere's the United States of America.There's not a black America and white America and Latino America and Asian America;there's the United States of America.The pundits like to slice-and-dice our country into Red States and Blue States;Red States for Republicans, Blue States for Democrats.But I've got news for them, too.We worship an awesome God in the Blue States, and we don't like federal agents poking around our libraries in the Red States.We coach Little League in the Blue States and have gay friends in the Red States.There are patriots who opposed the war in Iraq and patriots who supported it.We are one people, all of us pledging allegiance to the stars and stripes, all of us defending the United States of America.In the end, that's what this election is about.Do we participate in a politics of cynicism or a politics of hope? John Kerry calls on us to hope.John Edwards calls on us to hope.I'm not talking about blind optimism hereif we do what we must do, then I have no doubt that all across the country, from Florida to Oregon, from Washington to Maine, the people will rise up in November, and John Kerry will be sworn in as president, and John Edwards will be sworn in as vice president, and this country will reclaim its promise, and out of this long political darkness a brighter day will come.Thank you and God bless you.
