“今大道既隱，天下為家。各親其親，各子其子，貨力為己，大人世及以為禮。城郭溝池以為固，禮義以為紀。以正君臣，以篤父子，以睦兄弟，以和夫婦，以設制度，以立田里，以賢勇知，以功為己。故謀用是作，而兵由此起。禹、湯、文、武、成王、周公，由此其選也。此六君子者，未有不謹于禮者也。以著其義，以考其信，著有過，刑仁講讓，示民有常。如有不由此者，在埶者去，眾以為殃，是謂小康?！?/p>

以前孔子曾參加蠟祭陪祭者的行列，儀式結束后，出游到闕上，長嘆的樣子?？鬃又畤@，大概是嘆魯國吧！子游在旁邊問：“您為何感嘆呢？”孔子說：“（說到）原始社會至善至美的那些準則的實行，跟夏商周三代杰出人物（禹湯文武相比），我趕不上他們，卻也有志于此啊！”

“大道實行的時代，天下是屬于公眾的。選拔道德高尚的人，推舉有才能的人。講求信用，調整人與人之間的關系，使它達到和睦。因此人們不只是敬愛自己的父母，不只是疼愛自己的子女。使老年人得到善終，青壯年人充分施展其才能，少年兒童有使他們成長的條件和措施。老而無妻者、老而無夫者、少而無父者、老而無子者，都有供養他們的措施。男人有職份，女人有夫家。財物，人們厭惡它被扔在地上（即厭惡隨便拋棄財物），但不一定都藏在自己家里。力氣，人們恨它不從自己身上使出來（即都想出力氣），但不一定是為了自己。因此奸詐之心都閉塞而不產生，盜竊、造反和害人的事情不會出現，因此不必從外面把門關上。是高度太平、團結的局面?！?/p>

“如今大道已經消失不見，天下成為私家的。人們只敬愛自己的父母，只疼愛自己的子女，對待財務和出力都是為了自己：天子諸侯把父子相傳、兄弟相傳作為禮制。城外護城河作為防守設施。禮義作為準則：用禮義擺正君臣的關系，使父子關系純厚，使兄弟關系和睦，使夫妻關系和諧，用禮義來建立制度，來建立戶籍，按照禮義把有勇有謀的人當作賢者（因為當時盜賊并起），按照禮義把自己看作有功。因此奸詐之心由此產生，戰亂也由此興起。夏禹、商湯、周文王、周武王、周成王、周公因此成為三代諸王中的杰出人物，（是按照禮義）從中選拔出來的。這六位杰出人物，在禮義上沒有不認真對待的。以禮義表彰他們（民眾）做對了事，以禮義成全他們講信用的事，揭露他們有過錯的事，把仁愛定為法式，提倡禮讓。以禮義指示人們要遵循固定的規范。如果有不遵循禮義的人，在位的就會被罷免，老百姓把這（不按“禮”行事）當作禍害。這可以稱為小小的安定?！?/p>
