It is a great privilege that while we are guests in your country to be able to welcome you and the Chinese who are present here as our guests this evening.能有機會在貴國做客期間歡迎閣下和今晚在座的諸位中國客人，我們感到十分榮幸。

Yesterday, along with hundreds of millions of viewers on television, we saw what is truly one of the wonders of the world, the Great Wall.As I walked along the Wall, I thought of the sacrifices that went into building it;I thought of what it showed about the determination of the Chinese people to retain their independence throughout their long history;I thought about the fact that the Wall tells us that China has a great history and that the people who built this wonder of the world also have a great future.昨天，我們同幾億電視觀眾一起參觀了名副其實的世界奇跡之———中國長城。當我在城墻上漫步時，我感受到了在建筑這座城墻時所付出的巨大犧牲；我認為它顯示了在悠久的人類歷史上始終保持獨立的中國人民的決心；我想到這樣一個事實，那就是，長城告訴我們，中國有偉大的歷史，建造這個世界奇跡的人民也會有偉大的未來。

The Great Wall is no longer a wall dividing China from the rest of the world, but it is a reminder of the fact that there are many walls still existing in the world which divide nations and peoples.長城已不再是一道把中國和世界其他地區隔開的城墻。但是，它使人們想起，世界上仍然存在許多把各個國家和人民隔開的城墻。

The Great Wall is also a reminder that for almost a generation there has been a wall between the People?s Republic of China and the United States of America.長城還使人們想起，在幾乎一代人的歲月里，中華人民共和國和美國之間存在著一道城墻。

In these past 4 days we have begun the long process of removing that wall between us.We began our talks recognizing that we have great differences, but we are determined that those differences not prevent us from living together in peace.四天以來，我們已經開始著手拆除橫亙在我們之間的這座城墻。在開始會談時我們就承認彼此之間存在著巨大的分歧，但是我們決心不讓這些分歧阻礙我們和平相處。

He bade farewell at the close of his term with these words to his countrymen: “Observe good faith and justice toward all nations.Cultivate peace and harmony with all.”

Mr.Prime Minister and all of your distinguished guests this evening:

On behalf of all of your American-guests, I wish to thank you for the incomparably hospitality for which the Chinese people are justly famous throughout the world.I particularly want to pay tribute, not only to those who prepared the magnificent dinner, but also to those who have provided the splendid music.Never have I heard American music played better in a foreign land.Mr.Prime Minister, I wish to thank you for your very gracious and eloquent remarks.At this very moment, through the wonder of telecommunications, more people are seeing and hearing what we say than on any other such occasion in the whole history of the world.Yet, what we say here will not be long remembered.What we do here can change the world.As you said in your toast, the Chinese people are a great people, the American people are a great people.If our two peoples are enemies the future of this world we share, together is dark indeed.But if we can find common ground to work together, the chance for world peace is immeasurably increased.In the spirit of frankness which I hope will characterize our talks this week, let us recognize at the outset these points: We have at times in the past been enemies.We have great differences today.What brings us together is that we have common interests which transcend those differences.As we discuss our differences, neither of us will compromise our principles.But while we cannot close the gulf between us, we can try to bridge it so that we may be able to talk across it.So, let us, in these next five days, start a long march together, not in lockstep, but on different roads leading to the same goal, the goal of building a world structure of peace and justice in which all may stand together with equal dignity and in which each nation, large or small, has a right to determine its own form of government, free of outside interference or domination.The world watches.The world listens.The world waits to see what we will do.What is the world? In a personal sense, I think of my eldest daughter whose birthday is today.As I think of her, I think of all the children in the world, in Asia, in Africa, in Europe, in the Americas, most of whom were born since the date of the foundation of the People's Republic of China.What legacy shall we leave our children? Are they destined to die for the hatreds which have plagued the old world, or are they destined to live because we had the vision to build a new world?

There is no reason for us to be enemies.Neither of us seeks the territory of the other;neither of us seeks domination over the other;neither of us seeks to stretch out our hands and rule the world.Chairman Mao has written, "So many deeds cry out to be done, and always urgently;The world rolls on, Time presses.Ten thousand years are too long, Seize the day, seize the hour!”

This is the hour.This is the day for our two peoples to rise to the heights of greatness which can build a better world.In that spirit, I ask all of you present to join me in raising your glasses to Chairman Mao, to Prime Minister Chou, and to the friendship of the Chinese and American people which can lead to friendship and peace for all people in the world.(A toast given by president Nixon on his first visit to China in 1972)總理先生，在座的各位貴賓：

總統先生，尼克松夫人，女士們，先生們，同志們，朋友們，Mr President, Ms Nixon, comrades, friends, ladies and gentlemen,首先，我高興地代表毛澤東主席和中國政府向尼克松總統和夫人，以及其他的美國客人們，表示歡迎。Firstly, I’m glad, on behalf of Chairman Mao and the government of People’s Republic of China

同時，我也想利用這個機會代表中國人民向遠在大洋彼岸的美國人民致以親切的問候。

尼克松總統應中國政府的邀請，前來我國訪問，使兩國領導人有機會直接會晤，謀求兩國關系正常化，并就共同關心的問題交換意見，這是符合中美兩國人民愿望的積極行動，這在中美兩國關系史上是一個創舉。

美國人民是偉大的人民。中國人民是偉大的人民。我們兩國人民一向是友好的。

Mr President, Ms Nixon, comrades, friends, ladies and gentlemen,In the first place, on behalf of Chairman Mao and the government of People’s Republic of China, it’s my pleasure to extend our welcome to Mr President, Ms Nixon, and all the other American guests.At the same time, on behalf of Chinese people, I would like to take this opportunity to express our cordial greetings to the people of United States across the Pacific.That President Nixon accepted the Chinese Government’s invitation to pay a visit to China provides the leaders from both sides with chances to hold direct talks, to collaborate for the normalization of Sino-U.S.relations, and to exchange opinions over the disputes in both concerns.This is a positive act in corresponding to the wishes of both Chinese and American peoples, which marks the history of U.S-China relations as a pioneering work.The American people are a great people.The Chinese people are a great people.The peoples of both sides have long been friends.Due to the reason we all know, peoples in both country have been

suspended from contact for over 20 years.Now, with the joint efforts of both U.S.and China, the door to peoples’ friendship was eventually opened.So far, the peoples of both sides have already longed for the normalization of U.S-China relations and the striving formitigation out of tense.Peoples, and only peoples, can be the engine to create world’s history.We believe that the will of both peoples are destined to be reality one day.The systems of society between China and America are completely different, with huge divergences between the governments of both sides.However, these divergences shall not hinder our relation funding on the basis of the 5 Principles of mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-aggregation, non-interference of each other’s eternal affairs, mutual benefit and peaceful

coexistence.Furthermore, these divergences shall provide with even less possibility of wars.As

whatChinese government openly stated, early in 1955, that it was our doctrine,which had been long conducted, to sit down to talk rather than stand up to fight.We also noticed that the speech delivered by President Nixon ahead of this visit, mentioned that “what we ought to do is to try to make us different though rather than foes in war”.We hope that exchanging of opinions mutually in spirit offrankness, seeking for sharing points out of our divergences cleared by both, would managed to achieve a new outset of U.S-China tie.Lastly, I would like to ask for raising your glasses to the health of President Nixon and Lady Nixon, to the health of all the other guests from America, to the health of all friends and comrades present, and to the friendship between peoples of China and United States of America.
